I'd say the artefact route is better so the squadron doesn't think the party is trying some surprise attack and the Devil's Luck gets ganged up on by three properly-trained, properly-crewed warships.

Norv and Wood might come back, Olthar sort of stopped participating before the thread fell dormant.
