The Great Zhou Imperium
Turn 23

In the heart of Stormwind keep in the throne room the royal family and the nobles under them were all in attendance. They were summoned in anticipation for a official visit from their long time friends and close allies of the Zhou Imperium. Prince Anthony, who had been more and more involved with matters of state stood to the right of his father's throne, brimming with confidence.

The grand doors that led into the hall creaked open, hushing the idle chatter of those present. A robed man, clearly of Zhou descent, strode through the only partially open entrance, bowing in the general direction of the assembled nobility.

“Ladies and Gentlemen of Stormwind, I am honored to announce the presence of Her Imperial Highness, Princess Zhou Mei of the Zhou Imperium, Fourth in line to the throne and Duchess in name of Huisu, the Iron Throne. The Imperial Escort will now pay their respects.”

Stepping to the side of the entryway, the scholar assisted in the opening of the doors, revealing a group of fifteen to twenty men. Adorned in iron-plated armor, the heavily muscled warriors strode forward in formation and bowed in unison, before separating into two neat lines, revealing the main subject of these formalities. A well-dressed girl, no older than 18 or 19, stepped forward slowly between the columns of warriors, each one bowing his head as she passed. When she reached the front of the procession, she bowed her head slightly, not in deference but in respect to the nobility arranged before her.

King Varian rose “Welcome honored friends to stormwind. As is custom as long as you remain here you will be welcome at my table and under my protection. It is always a pleasure to have our old friends walk these halls.”

Zhou Mei lowered her head slightly once again. “We thank you for your generosity Your Highness. I have come not as a guest today, however, but as a messenger, delivering the word of my mother and Her Imperial Highness Zhou Yifan, Empress of the Zhou Imperium. With your permission, I will convey Her word.” Zhou Mei withdrew a scroll from a satchel at her side, unfurling it gently.

“On behalf of Her Highness Zhou Yifan, Rightful Empress of the Zhou Imperium, including the Violet Throne of Zhou and the Iron Throne of Huisu, in addition to surrounding territories, the reader of this message conveys Her will and desire. Her Highness wishes to pay respects to Her allies and friends in Stormwind, for they have been loyal and true for centuries. To this effect, She would like to deepen the friendship between Her subjects and your own through the everlasting bond of marriage. Having received word of the eligibility of Prince Anthony and his search for marriage, Her Highness has deigned to offer the hands of her two youngest daughters, Zhou Mei and Zhou Nanfeng, to the Prince. They approve of their mother’s choice, and eagerly await news. Please be assured that Her messengers are authorized to undertake any necessary negotiations between our peoples, related or unrelated to this arrangement. Long may She reign, and Long Live King Varian. End of Message.”

Looking up from the scroll, Zhou Mei, the younger of the two twins by a matter of minutes, caught Prince Anthony’s eye and winked.

Prince Anthony while trying desperately to hide his blush leaned to his father ear and the two spoke quietly for a few moments. After a Moment Varian spoke up “ While the offer of two gorgeous princesses is a offer of epic proportions the confines of our faith limit us to one spouse. Therefore I welcome you both to stay here and get to know my son, and in time perhaps love will find a way.”

A corner of Zhou Mei’s mouth creased as she hid a frown, instead bowing her head once again.
“Very well, your highness. Would it be possible for me to request accommodations for myself and my escort? I’m sure my sister would be happy to join us in time, but before I send a return messenger I am in great need of rest, as are my men I am sure.”

“Of course princess our home is your home.” Ending the rather formal affair with a respectful bow, in a few moments dinner would be served for the hungry guests and would be a great start to a rather pleasant evening.

The Imperial Republic of Salli
Imperial City of Salli

"I ask you men of Saladonia, to invite the Lord of the Earth into your heart, and join him into the battles that are to come! Only then can you be on the side of the rightous and the worthy," the priest said shouting at the denizens in the street, as they walk past him.

Across the street three men of the Saeling were drinking at a table enjoy themselves. Catching up on the day to day life in Saladonia, until they took notice of the priest.

"Oi, its the priest again," said one man as he took another sip.

"Ofcourse, Attrium, he does this everyday. The zealous bastard can't even stop even at his sermons and takes it to the streets," said Pollyx.

"Aye, keeps wanting us to join Silars noble quest or something, I don't even know why Mallix puts up with that priests shit," said Virrun.

"Mallix was the one that brought him here, Virrun, its doubtful that the priest is not favored by our leader," Pollyx distastefully.

"But he hasn't made it the countries religion yet," said Virrun defiantly, "clearly its simply there to get along better with the horde."

"You idiot! That Vakka Re, is using the religion to calm the angered crowds who hate to see their families separated," said Pollyx, "to quiet the crowds! Its bad enough we have to put up with Silar's ten year tithes!"

"Atleast he isn't Daros Bryre, Pollyx, the coward who bent the knee. Mallix is only putting up with this to fulfill the countries oath to the horde. Atleast our new Lord-Imperator has a spine," said Attrium.

"To hell with this Republic!" shouts Pollyx drawing attention to several nearby people, "even if Mallix appeases the horde our kin are merely cannon fodder to other citystates! We need to break ties to the horde!"

"Pollyx it has been a long day, and your tongue has grown loose thanks to boredom and anger. You should go home and relax," said Attrium stopping Virrun from interjecting.

"Fine," Pollyx scoffs, "lets continue 'bending the knee' to our tyrannical masters and let Saladonia suffer more!"

As Pollyx walks away several guards tail him, for they saw potential rebel in their midsts.

The Kingdom of Lordaeron

Year Fourty six of the Reign of King Varian Menethil

Turn 23

Image

Anthony walked along the battlements of Stormwind Keep often, mostly to clear his head, formulate plans or simply to relive memories of when his father would take him up here. This was the first time however he wasn't along, but was accompanied by the Princesses, a situation that he himself still couldn't believe was real.

“These are impressive walls,” One of the twins commented, walking along behind him. He still wasn’t entirely sure at any given moment which twin was which, as they were about as identical as twins could get, but he was sure he would figure it out in time.
“I must convince mother to build a wall like this back home. Or we could just capture that city to the south, they have nice walls.”

“Walls are some of the most important parts of a city, but in the end it’s the men that stand atop them that make the difference. Hopefully we will never need them, but with the numerose Hordes and threats against the Alliance I fear we may one day need them.”

The twins glanced at him in unison, one of them continuing to speak.
“Should there be a real threat against the Alliance, Zhou or Xcotl will most likely be the first to fall. Out here it’s relatively safe by comparison, so long as the Wastelanders don’t grow too bold.”
The other twin grinned.
“We’re not worried, though - mother is more than prepared for the future.”

“I am sure she is” Leaning against the battlement “But the Wastelanders have been getting bold, my father has been discretely preparing for the day when we have to fight them, the past several years they have tried to get us to swear fealty to their so called high cheif.” An opportunity had arose, seeing how much of their mothers intuition the twins possessed. “What would you advise my father to do if you were in my position?”

“It’s clear that one day the Alliance will have to march North and suppress the Wastelanders, just as one day we will have to repel the Horde. Our speaker swore fealty to the Horde to protect the Iron Throne, but in time the Horde will no longer be welcome in our lands. For now, all we can do is strengthen our armies and our weapons. But in time, we must fight.”

“Short term servitude for long term liberation….” Anthony weighed the decision in his head “We ourselves would be more than ready to fight if we could get our iron production up and running, we just keep running short of available industry to produce them in significant amounts”

The twins both looked thoughtful, putting their right hands to their chins.
“Our own iron production is within a few years of steady success, and you could likely achieve similar success by using a similar model. But without possessing deep understanding of your infrastructure, we couldn’t say one way or another.”

“Perhaps you to beautiful ladies could help me in that? I know it would go a long way towards egraciating yourselves to my father because at the end of the day my marriage to one of you is his decision.” Anthony felt bad, being this honest with them, but he himself also felt a sense of relief he didn't want to choose between them. The twins seemed to complement each other so well excelling in particular tasks wear the other lacks and only slight differences in their behavior he himself who had spent the most time with either of them was perhaps the only one in the city that had a slight chance in telling which one was which.

Their subsequent devious grins remained in unison, just as their previous actions.
“Perhaps we could - the passion of our people, especially when it comes to iron, is unmatched in the known lands. But in return for this favor, sweet prince, perhaps you could speak to your father on our behalf? After all,” The twins flanked Prince Anthony on either side, nuzzling up against his shoulders. “It would be a shame to split up the two of us.”

Anthony swallowed hard as his face turned a deep red to the point were most would think the Light itself would shine from his head. “Is that something you lady’s would like? I have never heard of such an arrangement.”

They both rested their heads on his shoulders, gazing down over the battlements to the busy city below.
“Of course we’d like it, or our mother wouldn’t have offered! It’s pretty common back home, though mother decided to stick to one husband. Our grandfather, Zhou Wang V, had six wives. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a ruler marrying two identical twins, but it makes sense to us.”

“If it is what you two absolutely want I will bring the issue to my father tonight during our sparring practice.” He was unsure about these strange Zhou customs but they have been allies of his family for centuries and with good reasons. After walking amongst the battlements for a while more the three had gotten fairly close, as close as strangers can get in a few days time but it was better than nothing.

That night at sparring practice Anthony did raise the issue with his father, almost giving the old man a heart attack. “The two of them, both as wives….” Varian was awestruck and as he explained to Anthony this had never been done before and called in the Archbishop to deliberate. “Well my king, in matters of the light there is nothing saying Anthony cannot marry both of them but I can see this not wanting to become a standard practice in our homeland, it would be much to confusing with our established customs. However my lord I believe I can issue a particular permission for this situation that should be enough to calm the nobles and common folk alike.”

Anthony was surprised, he had figured the Archbishop would have declined the idea outright, but there is a reason Anthony himself was a Paladin of the light and not a cleric like the good archbishop, and he knew both Mei and Nanfeng would be happy to hear the news. The archbishop did have a few caveats that he recommended the prince talk to the twins about. He suggested the twins convert to the faith of the Light before the wedding as it would do much to quell the uneasy.

Later that night Anthony traveled to the twins’ chambers passing their Imperial guards and politely knocked on their door. After being allowed in he shared the news.

One of the twins smirked.
“Can we take that as a proposal, your Highness?”

Anthony got down on one knee in front of them both as was custom and presented two expertly crafted white gold wedding bands. “Mei and Nanfeng, would you do me the honor of becoming my wives.”

The two of them kissed him on the cheeks, giggling in unison.
“Yes, we would.”

Year 371 of the Common Era - Turn 24

Rumours of War

Dark wings and dark words flit their way across the land. First of all into the Mother Mountains, where the mighty men of the city-state of Maelon have received, upon their doorstep, the smoke-skinned soldiery of the Midnight Horde. Words of fealty are exchanged and reaffirmed – and fresh banners hoisted by new recruits. When winter abates and spring comes round anew, two hundred of these freshly minted battle-thralls go off with the Horde.

With Gergan affirmed in fealty, the Men of the Bloodright depart the lands of the Gem-Sorcerers – interesting new magics in tow. Their tromp and clamor takes them southwest – towards the setting sun. And the lands of Salli.

And so it is that once more, to the lands of the Lord-Imperator come rumours of war. The wordiest of them are brought by skads of fearful, fire-marked refugees – a hundred of which have sought refuge at Salli – begging safety and succor from the servants of the Grey Warden. This might not be the ruler of Salli's only concern, however. It is said that soft men sleep silently in their beds because rough men stand ready to do harm on their behalf. In the city of the Saelings, the roughest men of all are those counted amongst the serried ranks of the town’s citizen-soldiers. And these men are none too pleased. Anon, a demand purporting to be from the Soldier’s Council finds its way to the Lord-Imperator: That he orders huts raised, ‘ere the winter snows come. Should he fail to do so, these stalwarths promise, there will be consequences.

The Magocracy continued its upward trajectory. The Wizard-King was had given a new order to the people of Xcotl. To construct a pit mine that would more efficiently harvest the bounties of the Earth. If Xcotl was to become an industrial behemoth then infrastructure was required lest she falls to oblivion due to the lack of tools, and wares that befitted an empire of power. Thus the laborers constructed a Smithy that would boost her industry.

Gold was the life force of Xcotl. The merchants hauled their wares by the banks of the river giving glistening coins in exchange for goods. The metals flowed like the mighty River Aphis across the desert lands, bringing much wealth and prosperity to the Sons of the Ancestors. Itzcoatl had many plans, many ambitions for Xcotl but she still sorely lacking in the infrastructure department. Kingdom of Serys

The Throne Room at the Serys Palace was vast, built to fit several hundred persons when the King held court. It was lavishly decorated with banners and tapestries that covered the hard stone flooring and structure. Ornate windows covered the left side of the room, showing the vast fertile plains beyond. At the end of the hall was a curious throne, its shape was wrought of an irregular cast, but covered in golden decorations and its cushion was as red as rust. Next to the throne were two small seats, positioned at such an angle to allow conversation with the King.

The room was filled with courtiers, landholders and nobles from all backgrounds. They excitedly chatted away and crafted alliances, friendships and rivalries amongst themselves. This was an intriguing occasion, the King was set to receive a delegation from the upstarts in Ellander. The throne sat empty, waiting for the King to take his rightful place at the figure piece of the Kingdom.

Cirion, the King’s personal steward, was standing with his own Chamberlain. Cirion wore his beautifully made purple Castellan robes while his Chamberlain wore a dark and simple outfit with a stifling white collar around his neck. Each of them held a number of letters and warrants for the Castellan to look at and possibly bring to the King’s attention.

The sound of a rod hitting the stone floor could be heard three times, as the herald announced the arrival of the King. “Make way for his Royal Majesty, the King” the herald shouted as the crowds parted and knelt before the King. The King was dressed in an exquisite black outfit with a fine silver trim, a golden chain around his neck encrusted with precious stones, and his ancestral small and simple golden crown. He made his way through the parted crowds to the throne, where he took a seat and made himself comfortable.

“His Royal Majesty, Casimir the first of his name, the Sovereign of the Kingdom of Serys, does hereby open this Court Session” announced the herald, before stepping back quietly into the area behind the throne where the other countless grooms and servants waited. Most of them were dressed in the traditional simple outfits of the Palace, though the ones serving the King wore more ornate outfits with a golden trim and a badge emblazoned with the royal family’s personal crest.

The King stood and observed those gathered before him, many of whom he’d met but knew little of. “I welcome you here to my court, and I pray to the Gods that you shall serve me and the Kingdom most graciously. I shall allow you to approach within reason and ask any question, or give any reports that may concern the nature of the realm” he said solemnly, before retaking his seat upon the throne. Casimir waited for his herald to bring the delegation from Ellander before him, he was eager to hear what they had to say.

It was time now. Letho was ushered from room to room, waiting area to waiting area, and now, finally, into the throne room. He could feel himself getting nervous. The anticipation of the event getting to him. He was sure this is why they did it this way. To make their visitors feel the grandeur and importance of this occasion. After again waiting at the end of the hall, the herald stepped forward and announced him to the King. With that, and some prodding from his escort, Letho stepped forward. He moved slowly, His head low until he reached a point halfway to the throne, before dropping down to one knee.

“Your Majesty. It is an honour to come before you. My name is Letho Delisle. My father was Cecil Delisle. I’ve come before you to right his wrongs” Letho said, doing his best to sound sincere.

The Honori People
Proud Daughters, All.

"Why do we build the wall, Muna Te'kal?" Asked the young child Neferata one early morning, as she and the high priestess overlooked the city sunrise. The older woman looked down at the child, and smiled sadly. She extended her hand out, and gestured towards the horizon in a long, sweeping motion. "For what lies beyond the Horizon, dear Fila, things too dangerous and scary to be discussed right now." The girl fell silent, sighing as she stared off into the sea of sand and mountains which extended for miles. "But, what is out there that is to be so feared?" Asked the princess, looking back up to her teacher. "And what would they want from us?" The older woman sighed, and gently scratched the young girl's back, looking off into the distance. "You were born after the last time they visited, but there are some bad people out there, Fila. Bad people who don't have homes like you or I. Who have what we want. Who want to live off of other's bread. They'll do horrible things to take it for themselves, horrible things I shall not speak of, but we build the wall to keep them out, and keep us free. Look at the men laboring down there. They have dug up the earth itself to protect our fair city. See their great blocks of stone, expertly shaped and cut to keep us safe. They will not budge before wind nor storm, the gates safely locked and barred. I will protect you with everything I have, do you understand? This is why we build the wall. I do it for you. I do it for all." She sighs, and looks down at her feat. "Sacrifice has to be made for safety. And I do not always enjoy it...But now, let us not think of that for now. Shall we go for a walk?" She put on a little smile for the young girl, who nodded. Taking her hand, she helped her up, and they made their way back to their quarters.

Dressed in fine camelhair, they left the palace to stroll along the city streets, already busy and alive with activity. The sights and smells of a morning in Mara were ever so exciting. The gardens being watered, artisans selling their wares, roasting meat, the city itself seemed to breathe with peace and prosperity. Making their way to the walls, they saw the laborers at their duties. Mainly men of rather tall stature and firm build, with a few scribes looking on for direction, they saw the strong labor being put into the gates of the old city. Great tons of the earth shaped in great blocks were stacked and mortared- with every drop of sweat it grew forth from the earth. With their long hair tied back and donning little more than loincloths, the working men struggled at their task with the most furious devotion. Great teams of men with sleds, ropes, and wedges moved what would be impossible without enormous social cohesion, working as one to raise their defenseworks. Teams of camel were seen from over the hilltop, dragging even greater blocks from the eastern mountains where they were born. Moving as one, to accomplish their task, both man and beast seemed strengthened by the same force of will, clearly but the will of the gods.

Leaving the first gates, they walked down into the surrounding districts, where many a priestess could be seen busying themselves for the day ahead. In the central square stood the latest monument- the obelisk of strength. Just approaching it invigorated the two of them, waking them from their sleepy burdens and liberating their joints from their pains. Approaching to touch such a marvel, Neferata could feel the arcane hum of the great stone pillar, the intricate carvings and symbols feeling like runes of infinite magic beneath her fingertips. "The spirits of the land gather here, can you feel their presence?" Asked Yuni, as the young girl looked up at the pillar in awe. "It is marvelous, is it not?" Neferata could only nod, and continue to stare at the gilded and glowing top. "The divine's presence upon the earth. I was your age when I was first introduced to it by my mistress. It was truly something..." The two continue to stare at the pillar, a newfound sense of wonder filling the old woman's soul, lasting several minutes, until the younger looked back to her with a small smile. "Ah well, I suppose it is time for us to move along in our walk, yes? I think you'd like to see what else the city has to offer."

Marching onwards, they finally made their way out of the city, towards a large pastureland that was presently quite alive. Before them, teams of soldiers wrestled with several camels, mounting them, and racing eachother around the great field. Sitting down to watch, Yuni could only notice the young girl's wonder as she witnessed the art of camelry. Leaning down to her, she asked with a smile "Would you like to try it?" With wonder, the young girl looked up at her, and grinned wide. Leaving to go talk to one of the drill captains, Yuni soon found herself looking on with pride and joy as Neferata laughed and played with childhood bliss, riding the young black camel up and down the trodden dirt paths for hours upon hours more.

Kingdom of Nekhen
Image
Seventeeth Year of the Rule of High King Tafari

Time passed ever onward in the land of the High Sun. Nekhen, once struck low by rebellion and disrule, now united and under a stable government. High King Tafari had forged stronger alliances with the Maran's to the north and even sent his daughter to live among them. Their soldiers patrolled the lands around Mara for the bandits and to keep an eye out for passing hordes. Back in Khasut, the young prince Ramesses was being tutored by the greatest minds of the Kingdom and mentored by his father. Now at age 11, the boy was expected to be near his father to learn what he could for the future. The great monument had been raised and the government became much more frugal in its industrial affairs. This was in line with the needs of the people and soon it would be Ramesses who would carve his name upon the stone.

For now however, he sat and watched as his father ordered a Barracks to be built. Permanent housing for the city's guards and soldiers for when they return. It would need to be completed soon, but there was no particular rush. For now the lands of the Aslani were peaceful and with a stable river supplying them with bountiful harvests, the people here had grown to be quite peaceful themselves.

It is during this year that the Scholars of Mara arrive to teach the Aslani people how to better preserve their food. A part of the alliance between the two people was an exchange of technology and this was just the first in many such exchanges. He hoped that his people would soon find themselves in a position to assist the Honori in such a way as well. For now, however, the military support would have to be sufficient. Much could be discussed with these scholars during their time in Khasut, but for the most part they were left to their work of teaching the population on how to preserve food for the future.

The Imperial Republic of Salli
Imperial City of Salli
Image

Malix Varly travels to the military square in Salli with his loyal retinue of guards and summons the soldier council. The most prominent figure of the council, Calix Lazos- the commander of the military, who had at one point been beat up by Malix as per punishment for failing to find the Brexon folk. It is safe to say, that they may not like eachother, but there was a fine level of respect. Both perform their duties without question.

Malix begins, "soldier council, I have come to discuss the recent contruction delays on the huts and hope to remedy them, as per your demand. I will however not be able to create requested huts in the alloted time of your demand, nor enough huts for the populace as a whole," he pauses until the uproar of the council settles down, "I understand your frustration. The hordes came at a bad time taking our workforce who were making huts away, and also the agreement with the explorers in the south hindered the development, but not completely.

I request that the council doesn't take unnecessary actions, and we will allow you temporary command on the labor force. I however have some demands along with temporary control, it will be till 4 years from now, and the deal with the explorers must stand, and food must be provided to the population. I will not have my oaths or responsibilities squandered due to other oaths not being fulfilled fast enough. I hope you understand that to me my oaths are everything, as it should be for any saladonian.”

Lazos and his fellow councilors met the Lord-Imperator's words with solemn miens. From afar, onlookers may have taken their silence for assent - but that would have been to err. The heft of their gaze and the set of their brows said what their tongues did not. These were paltry terms, and the men of the Soldier's Council were none too pleased. Oh, no. Not at all.

"So," drawled Calix Lazos - his tone curt, "you give us leave to do the labor that you will not?" He held broad arms wide in a gesture of surprise, his tone not even slightly mocking. "How generous!" Behind him, not even one of his fellow councilors dared a smirk. Not. One.
"And will you pay for this labor, at least? Or will that burden also fall to our discretion?"

The Lord-Imperator glances at the other councils, discomforted by their scornful gaze. He had known the attitude of the soldier council was not to be pleased by the terms, but he abided none the less. “The treasury funds neccessary for the projects you request, will be provided,” said Malix, “no more, no less. I hope you understand the necessity of ensuring that the funds provided, end up in the right place do you not agree?”

With solemn miens the councilors listened, and with murmured tones they affirmed assent. Barely.

"The Council agrees," intoned Lazos - his shaven skull bright in the lamplight. "On the condition that you announce these tidings to all the people of Salli. Let all men know that for the next four years, it is the will of the Soldier's Council that shall direct the craft and labor of all Salli - the cost of which shall be underwrit by you."

He smiled then; and touched his clenched fist to his chest in a soldier's salute. "Do this, and you shall have our oath of agreement. Come."

That last word was to his fellows. For as one, the body of their council rose and departed - dispersing, it seemed, back to their quarters.

Few words had they shared before this abrupt departure, and none in direct agreement. But what else could Malix truly expect? The men of the Council were men of duty; if nothing else - and men of such stock had few words to bandy with an Imperator who weighed his duty to his subjects so cheaply against his oaths to foreign men.

As it should be for any Saladonian.

On that eve, the senatorial convened to discuss politics in Salli, no doubt the senators did not like Malix’s report. They sat, in the tribal robes, bickering on how to deal with the daring upstarts, from within the military.

“Damn, soldiers, they ought to shut up and listen! We’ve let them gain leverage over us, thanks to that fool, Daros. We ought to just killed them all,” shouted one angered politician.

“Aye, better dead, then risk a rebellion,” another agreed.

“We can’t, that’d be foolish, they are the military. If your spear, won’t fight for you, then you are vulnerable to attack, we need to indoctrinate them, to make them work with us rather then against us...” said Malix Varly, “perhaps if we make them part of the government.

“You want us, to cooperate with rebels and other scum? Madness!” A senator shouted.

“We will see, this ofcourse is a trial run, giving them the power to manage the labor force. If they fail, we will blame them for their stupidity, and have a reason to disband them. If they succeed, we praise them and propose to give them a more official, a more beneficial role. Forcing them to cooperate with us, and forcing them to be part of the republic,” stated Malix Varly, “we in turn can keep them from rebelling, mending this poorly united republic together.

“Heh, we’ll play your game, Malix, for now... but if this doesn’t pan out, it’ll be on your hide,” stated Charles Bryre.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way, senator,” said Malix before walking off smiling.

The consent of the Senate is assured, prepared to back Malix for the time being. He had shared sentiment about the duty to the people as do the Soldier Council, however he knew the importance of this expedition. Latent potential to learn from other citystates, was important for the future of Salli. It would be to the benefit of the Soldier Council, but they would likely never understand.

Before coming to a close, the old Malix Bryre began coughing, and naturally covered it with his fist. As he pulled his hand away, he could see blood on his hand. He wasn’t going to live for long, and needed to ensure this last intrigue of his goes smoothly. Time was not to be wasted.

  • The Senates discontent with the military is present. They whisper to many friends and patriots of the councils disloyalty, often resorting to rebellion and disloyalty rather then cooperating with the senate. Soon rumors of the Lord-Imperators letter speaking of consequences that the council would enforce, was no other then open rebellion. Whether this harms the councils standing or enhances it is yet to be seen.
  • The Lord-Imperator himself announces the newfound temporary power that the council holds/ Many whisper about his recent frailty, his pale white skin and thin body.

Heart of Kharbarinth, Stalheim Hierarchy
5th of Swordbight, Year 371 of the Common Era

"It will be unparalleled in the known world."

All the architect could do was nod at the words of the Hegemon. It was a bad habit, to merely acquiesce to the soliloquys of another. But Istvan was, in a word, speechless. Sure, he had worked on the design team - all of the men and women of the Shaper's Guild had, such was the scale of the project - but it was another thing altogether to see it in the flesh and stone, as it were. Over a thousand workers were toiling over the face of the vast amount of land that had been cleared, a morass of humanity which even the city-dwelling professional had rarely seen all in one place. The amount of stone, tools, and splendor which had been amassed for the task at hand was staggering.

Already from the landscape rose walls of chiseled stone, glorious to behold. They were nearly as tall as three men already, luminescent marble from Cadmus, sooty black plinths from sunny Nightstone, and sledge after sledge of sturdy granite hewn from the earth of the White Hills themselves. And down into the earth, inky gloom even in the noonday light from where the architect stood overlooking the site, were already being delved great vaults and archives that would plunge deep into the fundament of the first of the Father's cities. And that was only a taste of what would one day be raised; to the horizon the complex stretched, building after building, district following district, within the immense walls of the citadel that had been erected to guard her environs.

No, the Hegemon did not think small. Knowledge was power, and power was necessary to survive in this world. A horde with strange gods and strange ideas had been broken upon the might of the Hvasskyn, and rumors from the north said that others roamed the fertile lands of the many city states that teemed in the savage lands north of even distant Cadmus. Strength would be needed to weather the night to come, and the many nights that might come unlooked for. The White Academy, fairest of the libraries and universities of men, would be a beacon of enlightenement of knowledge. Prepared for even times of turmoil, frowning walls to allow it to stand even if desperate barbarians breached the defenses of the city at large.. the Academy would be the bulwark of humanity, and the Keen-Folk would raise it.

A wonder for the times of plenty, when the Hierarchy stood tall, to guard against evil days to come.

Year 373 of the Common Era - Turn 25

Dark Tidings
The men of the Midnight Horde departs the Mother Mountains, heading southwards - the earth shaking to the tread of their warriors. In their wake lies Maelon; whole but humbled. Free, but fearful. So it goes.

Elsewhere, Salli's eastern horizon grows black with banners as the Men of the Bloodright sweep forth to announce their coming. Loud is their clangor and horrid their sound - for at its throat lies the death of nations. The Lord of The Earth is come! Now, before Salli's walls a herald strides - a beast of a man in who's shadow a leashed word-serf makes gabbled sense of his master's belted demands. "Men of Saladon! The time of fulfillment is upon you. Bring forth your young! The Lord of The Earth will have his due."

Let mothers weep and fathers curse. The Child-Tithe had come.

But those were not the darkest tidings to emerge that year. From the lands of Xotl come disturbing news. Shoval is vanished! Looted! Gone! If the wildest tales are to be believed, the entire populace of this once proud settlement has simply disappeared. Stolen, like chickens in the night, against their will by unseen hands. In the wake of this mystery lie only the mute markings of their captors – scraps of cloth as dark as oxblood and an odd, broken dagger of moonlit bronze.

Xotl
Enough food. +I Wealth
The Ant-Hound Pastures continue on the slow road to recovery.
-III Wealth, +IV Industry
-1 Gold, +III Wealth
The Smithy is completed. [Labor III, Wealth III, Industry IV]
-I Wealth paid to the Chrysí Aspída.
The men of Xotl head southwards, into a sea of grass traversed by many babbling streams. Shales of copper gleam in the shoals and riverbanks here, and flocks of horned horses neigh impertinently at your approach. They seem particularly fond of great, yellow gourds - clusters of which dot the land like clouds in the sky. | Fields (Temperate): Copper, Horned Horses, Gourds.
100 Scholars study the secrets of Governance from the Chrysí Aspída. [1/5]
No innovation regarding elven transcendence grace the wise men of Xotl this year.

A great many of Xotl’s commoners have voiced their anger and despair at their continued lack of even the most basic housing – forced instead to live as best they can in earthen dugouts and open fields. Public opinion is at an understandable low, and resentment simmers in the souks and alleys. Wise men should take heed of such tidings, for a people’s voice is dangerous when charged with wrath.

Shoval
-100 Peasants stolen into exile.
The Scriptorum is severely ransacked, and will require IV Wealth to restore.

Serrith
Sufficient food. +I Wealth
2 Huts rise. [Labor I] [Labor I]

Well prepared and supplied, the men of Serys embark on a long and wearisome journey. Dangers and challenges will likely abound, yet the hoped for results will surely be worth it. Eventually. [2/6] -VI Wealth

To the men of Ellandor come news of foreign lands this year; the lands of the Ita. After a long and arduous trek worthy of many a fine song, Ellandor's brave explorers have laid eyes upon a mountain vale wherein dwells a city with walls of stone. Trees in this land are tall enough to brush the sky, and the sweetness of their plum orchards can make even the dourest weep for joy. Their markets, where fine silver is offered for trade, are also worthy of note. [6/6]

The wise men of Nekhen have yet to determine any particular use for Star-Silver; save for its inherent beauty. Several wagging tongues about court have already praised its cold, metallic lustre as beyond compare to “baser” metals. In the hands of skilled craftsmen, it could surely be used to craft objects most pleasing to the eye, for which men would trade much wealth.
-1 Star-Silver, +III Wealth

Citizen-Soldiers demand their wages -?! …Oh. Oh, dear.

The Changing of The Guard

Salli is troubled. As the heat of summer scorches the land, the last city of the Saelings is wracked by civil strife. For it is the Soldier’s Council which has, by law, been granted the power to direct the labor of Saladonia these next few years. Salli’s Lord-Imperator, meanwhile, is left with only one job – literally one job: To ensure that all expenses are met. Yet in this matter, it appears the Lord-Imperator has failed. The coffers are empty.

This, claims the leader of the Soldier’s Council, Calix Lazos, can only be taken as an act equivalent to abdication by Salli’s Lord-Imperator – an abdication the Soldier’s Council graciously accepts.

For years, Calix and his fellow councillors have watched from the side lines while the proud people of Salli have endured misery, mismanagement and misrule by their so-called leaders. “This ends now!” decrees the Council. “By the gladium.” Truly, few things are as important to the men of Saladonia as their oaths – and the men of the Soldier’s Council are nothing if not honorable. But has not the Lord-Imperator taken oaths also? Oaths to his people and his city? To steer it justly? To house his people? To honour all debts? The list of his duties, and his failings, are many. And lost now, like tears in rain.

In short order, armed Citizen-Soldiers storm the quarters of Salli’s senators in a string of night-time raids. The befuddled senators are duly invited to attend a meeting - no, a torchlit tribunal – one staffed by dour, shaven-headed Councillors. They decree, with military ardour, that the rule of Salli hereby belongs to the Soldier’s Council. From the side lines watch silent citizens. Some angry. Some fearful. Others still with faces of blank resignation, as indifferent as cobblestones. The senate is disbanded. The Lord-Imperator is under arrest. Saladonia is dead.

All hail Saladonia.

A gaggle of Fastaqui's finest head off to chart the lands even farther south of the Many Mothers' lands. Beyond the desert wadis, the sun-scorched desert rises steeply - and soon becomes tall, foreboding mountains capped by peaks of gleaming white. Flakes and spurs of strange metals gleam brightly amongst the rocks, and skittish herds of lean, tuft-tailed goats with horns as long and straight as grown men's forearms graze on sparse grasses. -II Wealth | Mountains: Lead, Goats, Cassiterite.

Another band of Fastaqui explorers sets off west. Beyond the scrubby hills their journey takes them; to a wide, bleak land where the sun makes the air shimmer and water is but a word. They come upon many pits of bubbling black tar in the wastes, caverns teeming with what appear to be fruit trees that glow in myriad hues in the darkness, and plentiful edible desert-lichens which shelter in the shade of dune and stone. -II Wealth | Desert: Oil, Desert Lichens, Underground Forest.

To the wise crones of Fastaqui comes the secret of tending wounds, breaking fevers and curing the sick. Medical Care, in other words.

The Shambling Legion
Blood is spilled. Dead men rise. To serve and never tire. +50 Fresh Undead , -2 Beavers

The Chrysí Aspída
Bounties are hunted and payment collected. Hard work, perhaps – but more welcome than mere labor. Token rewards by their Xotl hosts also help. +III Wealth

The Orleans Folk
The Folk fret and frolick amongst themselves; content for once to let time be time.

Dark times indeed as misfortune spread like a storm across the lands of Xcotl. Whispers, messages relayed from the Lordship of Shoval one hundred souls snatched during the night. The Wizard-King was perplexed how could something like this happen? No matter Shoval had been in serious decline before the raid, so the loss wasn't too bad other than tax collectors lamenting over the loss of revenue, but he knew that fortune did not favor him and that he would have to act quick or Shoval would remain empty and devoid. In the meantime, he heard the voices and concerns of the people. He only wished that they would remain patient, but he understood the troubles of the peasants and their hardships.

By his word, as Master luxurious homes of stone and wood would be constructed. Pyramids had arisen to the skies in the beating heart of the city to house the lords and ladies of the Gate Council and Magnum Opus. Meanwhile smaller and simpler homes still made of the bones of the earth had arisen to accommodate the peasants. Slowly but surely Xcotl was turning from a city of mud to a city of stone. Xcotl was becoming a great city in it's right even with all the strife and suffering that abounded. While things looked grim for now the people of Xcotl looked into the future not with foolish passiveness and hope but with the determination to make things right and honor the Ancestors.

Soon, word had reached from the south the Aphis River. A city-state had been discovered, wonderful news for a new city to be added to the ranks of the Xcotl. The WIzard-King would make sure these people would understand their new overlords to rule over them in the future, for now, they would let them be. Any minute now the Horde would attack, and he needed to prepare for when that day would.

Meanwhile, the Summer Solstice neared. The fabled holiday Xolotl Tecuilhuitontli in the Xcotl tongue or Day of the Dead neared. The barrier between Other World and Earth was weakened, and for a moment, the Ancestors would cross over to be with their friends and loved ones. The government was looking to improve morale officially supported the holiday and spent much wealth for a grand celebration. Food and drink would flow like the River Aphis itself, and there would be much merriment and joy as the people would celebrate the return of their Ancestors.

*100 Undead are given to the command of the Dark Lord*

A deal is forged between the Magocracy and Imperium. For Wealth XVI and 100 Explorers, the ownership of Shoval shall be transferred to Zhou. The negotiations are still in the preliminary stage, but the transaction is offical.

With the downpayment of Wealth V Zhou settlers are allowed to colonize the village but full ownership is not initiated until the full payment is made.

The Sons of Saladon
Brexonburn
Image

Banners of the Imperial City of Salli glimmered in the frontier lands of Brexonburn- however the flags belonged to something of a different name. The Sons of Saladon, honorbound Warriors of Salli, owned the flags with great pride and joy. They we’re rather the loyalist faction in Salli, men who did not agree with the Soldier councils, capture of their city. However their fate was secured, once the Lord-Imperator abdicated. They would no longer fight for Salli.

Instead, these noble sons of Saladonia, chose a different path. Rather then be dishonored by being forced into becoming Gladium without reasons worthy of such a punishment was wrong to many, and those who had qualms with the upstarts left the poor city behind. The path they chose was to make a land, perhaps not one, but of many that the Saeling can live in comfortably perhaps not be controlled by such despicable upstarts.

He who led them, the Sons of Saladon, was but a middle-aged man. A man who allied himself with Malix, but tried to keep the Republics spending to be less frivolous. That man was Hanson Rylander, Clan Father of Clan Rylander, Senator, and Protecter-Lord of Clan Tjenu. He had went to visit his distant family in Brexonburn only to find the republic had been overthrown. He had decided to stay in Brexonburn, knowing that if he were to return they would brand him with charges if they could.

As the end of the month drew near, men came, men of Sallian stock, he had thought at first that they may came to take him back to Saladonia to press their charges. They had requested him personally. He dared not run, instead he steeled himself, preparing for his inevitable fate. As he walked, the men saw his approach. He had thought the faces would turn to stone, but instead they soften gladdened to see him.

After a brief discussion, Hanson soon learned why they came. Loyalists, those men who despised the new government, and wanted to not be apart of its foundation. A betrayal of tradition, they called it. Hanson was not fond of the government either, who turned many of the politicians into gladium, bring shame not only on the men in question, but also their families. However Hanson had no love for the old republic, and Malix’s abdication meant that the soldiers had atleast- honorably forced the government to give up control, without resorting to unnecessary force.

Regardless, it would only bring harm to the heartlands of Saladonia, no he had to leave the past within the past and move on. These loyalist, men and women who left their homes, to perserve their honor and loyalty, would be willing to follow Hanson. Perhaps he could turn this band of loyalists, into a band of warriors, who would protect Saladonia from nomads and raiders. With his resolve resolute, and his will unwavering he begun issuing orders.

They were to recruit folk, men, to fight as warriors, for the sake of Saladonia. The artisans first and foremost are set to experiment on making bows. Asking the experienced archers of Brexonburn for advice and insight. Hanson knew they couldn’t stay for long- that their growing power would likely draw unwanted attention, no they must move on, they were not to stay.
Hanson’s Clan-Marchers - 200 Proud Clansfolk
100 Artisans: Contructing/Testing bows and arrows, aiming for wood that can flex with ease, and resist th urge of snapping. Using various types of trees in the area. They take advice from their skilled kin in Brexonburn to design a bow worthy of use and mastery.
100 Freefolk: attempts to recruit denizens of Brexonburn, hoping to garner a force to protect Saeling folks.

Saladonian Bow Design - desired to be flexible and strong. Aiming for ranges farther then that of a average bow.

Nineteenth Year of the Rule of High King Tafari

The Honori Scholars sure put work into the city's scholarly elite. The secrets of Food Preservation was being passed on to their people. High King Tafari was not too concerned, leaving most matters of this sort to his scholars and priests. However, his second son Amhose was starting to show interest in this. The boy was nine and was overly indulged by his mother. The young boy had three private tutors, one speaking of history, one for mathematics, and another for religion. Between these three tutors, the boy was growing in intelligence very quickly.

Elsewhere there was both joyous and mournful news. The Queen gave birth to a child, a young boy named Khatep. Filled with joy, Tafari had the city celebrate that evening that another son was born to the royal family. It was that night however, during the festivities in the city that the weakened Queen passed away. A period of mourning fell over Tafari and he left the raising of his family to the various members of his court while he mourned his wife and prepared her burial.

The Cloudforge, Spire of the White Academy, Kharbarinth, Stalheim Hierarchy
1st of Redleaf, Year 373 of the Common Era

A chill wind tore at the cloaks and heavy aprons of the men where they stood on the cool flagstones of white marble, and Barimaus shuddered involuntarily. Not cold so much as fear, in truth, gripped his heart. Hundreds of spans below stood the green gardens of the Academy, and a man would have plenty of time to realize his demise if he slipped upon the icy pavers and went hurtling out into the void. The breath of winter's coming was not nearly so oppressive as the terrors men could conjure in their own minds.

"Begin" intoned the master smith, eyes glowing faintly with reflected starlight, his beard plaited and trammeled after the fashion of the Forgebound nearly as dark as the night sky above, save for the red luster leant to its folds by the inferno which raged in the hearth itself. It was an emotionless word, bespeaking tight control, and that was for the best.

Barimaus leaned forward, the hems of his crimson stole now very visible, lit by the flames of the growling Cloudforge. In his hands he bore a length of stone, cut and shaped by artisans to enhance what was thought to be its arcane potential, and with a chip of a chisel the mage in front of him completed the bounding rune. Strength, given to strength, now shaped to feed not the material but the effervescent. Other men, men of craft and not of the arcane, leaned on immense levers at the forge-master's word.

Up the fire leapt, fed by winds cunningly channeled from a dozen lesser spires into the immense air-column which fanned hot the consuming dragon of the Cloudforge. Up the fire leapt, coal black as the depths of the Endless Ocean wreathed in blue and white flame feeding the appetite of the smithy, lines of mystical current stretching from the acolytes around the forge to the fuel itself. To preserve the apex, that was the need. Hotter than hot the fire had to burn, and already the mage of the Ordo Inscriptus felt that heat embrace his flesh, his hands. An ordinary man would have been seared in an instant, leapt back in pain and blind panic, an animal instinct for his own preservation and safety. But the workers who labored here, so far above the greatest city in the known world, they were no ordinary men.

Runes of protection glowed a bright piercing blue on the robes of the laborers, glistening from metal gorgets around the necks of smiths and embroidery worked into the folds of stoles of mastery and prepared sorcerous garments. The heat could be perceived, but it had no power to harm, at least for now. All enchantments could be overcome with time, but the singing of the craftsmen and the careful needlework of the Collegia did not falter or fail, not in that instant. And at the center of the fire, suspended by bespelled apertures, the large stone of glistening ore cracked and fizzled perceptibly.

Starmetal, the explorers called it. It was like silver, silver known from the east, but a hundred times harder. In moonlight it glistened a pale blue, like ice under a torch, men could no more hope to shape it to their will than they could fly above the clouds. To those with the senses to perceive it, the nearly translucent metal veritably sang with the power of the Father, with the magic of earth and sky and water. With the cold magic of something greater than even the mundane soil, of the stars above.

And through mind and might, the artisans of the Hierarchy would bend it to their will. Slowly, but surely, the rites were refined, the mystery laid bare for comprehension instead of superstition.

Has been engaged in a Diplomatic Union through marriage with the Lordaeron City-state, deepening diplomatic relations and increasing social cohesion.
Policy: Forward-Thinking triggers. New Policy: Syncretist - For each political marriage between your city-state and another, gain a significant increase to public order cap and social cohesion. The other city-state receives a small bonus to public order cap and social cohesion. Political marriages are assumed to last 15 turns unless cancelled by one party, and do not stack when made between the same two city-states. One city-state may only receive benefits from four political marriages.
