October 1939.

Europe has been plunged into conflict once more even though for many the scars of the Great War remain fresh in their minds. The German Blitzkrieg has overrun Poland whilst Britain and France scramble to prepare for the onslaught in the west that could come at any moment. The military planners of the fledging Allies are still stuck in terms of Flanders mud, though a forward-thinking few have taken on the innovations and pioneering tactics of the last war.

One such person is Winston Churchill.

Newly (re-)instated as First Lord of the Admiralty, Churchill recalled the Zeebrugge Raid in 1918 and the Boer Commandos he'd fought against before that. Worried that the British military is struggling to re-equip and adapt to modern warfare, Churchill petitioned for small raiding forces to be formed to pioneer what he termed 'a new kind of warfare'. These raiding forces were to conduct guerrilla-style operations to weaken enemy forces and help even the balance for British forces.

There was opposition from the command staff of the British Armed Forces, though through Churchill's persistence the War Office relented and reluctantly agreed that a force (No.1 Special Assault Group) be formed. On 25th October 1939 1 SAG was formerly established, under the command of Royal Marines Captain Michael 'Mike' Maguire, and a call was made for volunteers.

Personal History:

Michael Maguire was born February 6th 1914 in Queenstown (now Cobh), County Cork, Ireland. His father was an officer in the Royal Navy (serving as part of Coast of Ireland Station) and part of an Irish family which maintained a strong naval tradition with the eldest son joining the Senior Service, which Michael's elder brother Richard did via a cadetship. With the Irish War of Independece, the command was disbanded and Michael's family moved to Plymouth where Michael finished his education at the Devonport High School for Boys. Being the younger son Michael had a greater degree of choice and so he decided to join the Royal Marines as an officer in 1933, possibly influenced by an uncle on his mother's side who was a Marine in the Great War.

Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Michael attended the Royal Marines course at the Royal Naval College Greenwich and received a promotion to full Lieutenant a year later. He spent some time part of the Royal Marine Division at Chatham before embarking for general service on HMS Orion, mostly off the coast of Spain during the Civil War. Later he embarked on HMS Kent following her 1937-38 refit and served on China Station, mentioned in dispatches for actions against pirates and receiving a promotion to Captain in early 1939. Recalled to Chatham in August 1939 and given command of the Special Assault Group in late October.

When the Great Depression came, his father was able to stay in work, and James went to work in a meatpacking plant. When he was 18, a recruiter came around and asked people about James' age to sign up for the Royal Engineers. James had always enjoyed tinkering with things, so he ended up signing up as an officer. He was made a second Lieutenant and went into service in India. When Hitler gained power and started annexing the countries around Germany, James instantly wanted the UK to stop him. When the opportunity arose for this Special Assault Group, he instantly volunteered.

While in Calcutta, James only saw combat with drunk soldiers, one such event was when a couple Australians got drunk and shot up the base, James and another Engineer Tackled and pinned them until MP's showed up

Personal History: Mathias Sharron was born to Carlin Sharron and never knew his mother. His father taught him how to use a rifle at a young age, and by the age of 12, he was able to take down deer with a single shot if he was lucky. When he was 13, his father went off to join the army, but never came back. He was reported missing during a training exercise, and this event made Mathias cruel to others for having parents. When he was 14, he joined up with a underground crime syndicate, where he met Yakob Nickraz, a Polish refugee and thief. The two became fast friends, and swore to join the army when they became 19. When he was 19, he enlisted in the British Army, but a terrible accident occurred. During a demonstration on how to avoid a mine, the mine, thought to be a dummy, went off, killing several of Mathias' friends, including Yakob Nickraz, and shook him badly. The event scarred poor Mathias, and he was rendered mute, either unable or unwilling to speak. He also received a wound to the face due to shrapnel, leaving an ugly scar near his eye. He was never the same after the incident, being incredibly focused to training and whatever mission he was on, however, he had a bit of a habit to drink Scotch whenever he had free time, earning him the nickname "Scotch".

My issue is how he has served in both China and India when he only signed up after Poland fell...basically a month.

Two years earlier would make more sense as it would've given him time to do his basic training, trade training and ship out for an overseas tour.

He was the second of three children, with an elder brother and a younger sister, who would be born just weeks before his father was killed in the Hundred Days that ended the Great War. His upbringing was modest though far from destitute as his father’s family contributed and his mother earned a good wage for the period as a governess, all three siblings roaming the streets and becoming involved in politics, as many did in France during the 20s. Through their father's connections, all three children were able to spend summers in the countryside, learning to ride horses and shoot, amongst other skills. Though there were offers for him at universities throughout France, Gabriel instead chose to join the Army as his father had done and as his older brother Raphael had done. Completing basic training, Gabriel was then sent to ESM for further training, graduating as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1936.

His first deployment was to Algeria in 1936, where he served along the frontier, battling Berber raiders and bandits. He studied the Berber tactics and reorganised his own force (mostly Tirailleurs led by French officers) into highly mobile mounted columns to counter the frequent raids. The result of this reorganisation (which saw a considerable drop in raids in his sector) impressed his superiors and he was promoted to Lieutenant before being transferred back to France in mid-1937.

Here however, away from the action of an active front, Moreau grew restless. He was a constant critic of the French Army’s preparedness and tactics, citing his own experiences and modern doctrines which the French were wholly ignoring. He was also highly critical of the French government’s passiveness regarding German aggressiveness and their refusal to intervene in the Spanish Civil War. This soon reached a head and Moreau resigned his commission to sneak across the Pyrenees to join the Republican Spanish Army in late 1937.

Initially fighting as part of an International Brigade, he was soon transferred to a group known as the Diablos Nocturnos (DN), an international commando unit led by a man with the nickname El Barbero. For nearly seven months, the group tormented Nationalist forces across Catalonia and Aragon, inflicting heavy casualties in men and material. The cutting off of Madrid and Barcelona sealed the Republican’s fate however and the DN was dissolved in 1939. Moreau managed to return across the Pyrenees back into France, only to be arrested on the border. He served time in prison although his sentence was lenient thanks to the intervention of Rafael Moreau, his elder brother and now a colonel. He was released just before the war began, regaining his commission in the Army though his criticism was as vocal as ever. He was soon dispatched to join No.1 SAU, as much to get him out of the way as anything.
