If I might inquire as to what members of the Royal Family you were looking for, perhaps I could fill a space or two. Let me know what you need and I'll draw up an application.

[Strengths]: Calculated,
Pragmatic,
Ambitious,
[Weaknesses]: Might be seen as machiavellian (rightfully so),

Biography:

Early years and education
A native Liverpudlian, Mary E. Picquart was born on May 26, 1945 to a middle class family, being one of five children of John and Anne Picquart. Her youth was fairly uneventful, occupied with hard work on her education which resulted in her admission and later graduation from University of Liverpool. She graduated with first-class honours in law. She briefly practiced law before making her official entry into politics.

Early political career

Picquart has been involved with politics from an early age due to her father's participation in a trade union. This led her to joining the Labour Party herself in her early twenties. There she had the opportunity to meet a great deal of working class people, a fact she has mentioned a number of times in her career, saying that it was them who inspired her to pursue a political career. What she always failed to mention is that she felt disgust towards many of them, not appreciation. This feeling stemmed from her snobishness and arrgoance towards uneducated working people, which she mannaged to successfully hide. In 1983 she was chosen to replace the retiring incumbent MP who she has previously worked for and was elected to the House of Commons shortly thereafter. There were rumours circulating among some Labour MPs about a potential romance between her and her political mentor, but they have died with the former MP who passed away in 1991. In her early years Picqhart was a vocal proponent of numerous left-wing policies, opposed Thatcher's policies on coal mines and tried to protect the unions so fervently that she briefly felt sincere empathy towards them. The lack of progress and failure to gather support made Picqhart bitter and more moderate with her deciding to favor her personal interests and ambitions over the "greater good".

House of Commons

During the early days of her career Picquart was in opposition to the policies of Margaret Thatcher. Unlike the more radical members of her party she supported Tony Blair and New Labour, including the policies of the War in Iraq. When Gordon Brown became Prime Minister she was offered a position in his cabinet, which she turned down, sensing it's inevitable end at the next general election. After the defeat of the Labour Party in 2010 she became the Chief Whip of the Labour Party and helped in [not-Ed Milliband]'s ascention to the Leadership. When the Party once again lost in 2015 she was appointed to the newlt created post of the Shadow First Secretary of State to appease the centrist [not-Blairites] worried about the newly elected leader.

While having been percieved as left-wing and progressive, especially on social issues having supported LGBT rights in the early stages of her career, Picquart has grown more centrist over time. As is tradition for Whips Mary usually stayed silent on political affairs and continued this stance as Shadow First Secretary of State, which had it's downsides - despite her being a supporter of Britain's membership in the European Union her constituency has voted to leave the community. Describing her views Picquart labeles herself as a "social democrat" and a part of the "New Labour" coalition.

Other Info:
In 1970 she married James Wildingham, a man of noble birth and currently owner of a small estate in Cornwalls. Due to their mutual dislike and perception of children as a speedbump in their careers the pair never decided to have a child. Years after that decision was made Mary seems to regret it and feels frustrated by her inability to reverse it.

Currently we're not looking for members of the Royal Family, although they might be open for applications in the future.

If you would like to become involved I suggest looking into the Conservative Party as it is scheduled to have a leadership election and not many player characters have declared themselves yet.

Ouch. I'm used to writing royals, lol.

The problem with me joining the Conservatives is that, irl, I'm about as socialist as you get without being a full-blown communist. I'd probably bunk it up. I'll look over what you have and see what role I might be able to fill.

Labour could also use some people considering the low amount of player characters among it's ranks.

Also, I can relate to the problem with ideological difference having similar political views as you. However it's always interesting to step out of your comfort zone and get to know the other side better, even if for the purpose of scrutinizing their views irl. I myself am currently thinking about creating a moderate conservative for the leadership race.

NS Nation Name: Alozia
Character Name: Sir Franklin Bennet-Ranton
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 82
Character Height: 178 cm / 5 ft. 10
Character Weight: 85 kg/187 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job: MP for Derbyshire Dales (2010-Present) MP for West Derbyshire (1970-2010), Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1990-1992), Secretary of State for Defence (1987-1990), Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1983-1987)
Appearance:
Image

Character Constituency of Origin: West Derbyshire
Character Constituency of Residence: Derbyshire Dales
Character Party Affiliation: Conservative
Main Strengths: compromiser, somewhat of a mentor figure for more moderate and less experienced MPs, (dwindling) agrarian support
Main Weaknesses: Ancient in terms of age, very similar to the incumbent PM, establishmentarian, weak social media presence
Biography: Born on March 12, 1935 to Baronet Zachary Bennet-Ranton of Matlock, in the family's small estate few kilometers west of Matlock. His social status as a member of nobility allowed to live a fairly carefree life. As a young man he was sent to a good quality school where he made friendships with children of simillar social standing.

In 1953 he enlisted in the Army and trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst earning the rank of the Second Lieutenant. Two years later he was stationed in Cyprus during the Cyprus Emergency before being deployed in Egypt during the Suez Crisis in 1956. After that he has not seen much combat and has not seen many promotions with the exception of that to the rank of Lieutenant. He retired from the Army in 1965 after about 12 years of service. After his his father's death in 1967, Franklin returned home to work on his family estate, turning it into a moderately profitable orchard. Having hired a couple of local residents Bennet-Ranton became recognisable in his district.

Franklin first entered the House of Commons in 1970 as a member of the Conservative Party. His first years as MP were fairly uneventful with him dedicating a lrage amount of his time for work within his district, especially in his orchard. A pro-European politician he voted for the European Communities Act 1972. After the 1979 General Election he was considered for the post of the Secretary of State for the Environment in the First Thatcher Ministry, his environmentalist views, however, discouraged Margaret Thatcher from appointing him to the post. He was appointed to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1983 where he served until 1987. His tenure proved to be fairly unorthodox for a Conservative politician, with the Agriculture industry enjoying a surprising amount of support. He was also fairly lenient when it came to the fishing industry. This position would ultimately prove to be the one he enjoyed the most throughout his career. In this time he also wrote a book on orchardy, which due to it's rather niche topic did not enjoy larger popularity.

After a brief internim period in the Ministry of Defence Bennet-Ranton was officially appointed to serve as the Secretary of State for Defence where he would serve until his appointement to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990. For two years Franklin served as the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, resigning from the post on 23 September 1992 after the tragic death of his younger brother in a plane crash. His resignation was overshadowed in the media by the then Secretary of State for National Heritage [not-David Mellor]'s resignation just a day later, whose departure from the Cabinet of [not-John Major] was surrounded by reports of a scandalous affair. Despite that his 9 years in various cabinet positions has earned him a number of work connections as well as genuine friendships for many years to follow. It wouldn't be until 2010 when he would return to the cabinet as Minister without portfolio in the Conservative-Liberal Democrat cabinet, where he would serve in a mostly advisory role for three years. In the years following his departure from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he started exploring historical literature. During his tenure as the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs he was invloved in the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty.

His true return to national politics was in 1997 when he ran for the party's leadership with moderate success. Despite being seen as a rather non-controversial figure he failed to come out on top finishing third. Four years later in 2001, he would attempt once again to enter the contest, however this time his attempt would prove less impressive. He did not run in 2005, endorsing Archibald Wyvern instead.

Political views:
Socially conservative: Generally opposed to the idea of same-sex marriage; voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act of 2013; does not see LGBT+ rights as a major issue, however he is not really set on rolling back previously given rights; staunchly anti-abortion
European Union: Pro-European; Voted for the UK's entry into the European Community, worked on the Maastricht Treaty; made a few appearances in the media in 2016 before the Brexit referendum voicing his support for the EU.
Defence: Supports increased defence spending; against Wyvern's budget cuts
Economics: Interventionist to a degree, favours the privatisation of the NHS,
Environment: Agrarian, pro-environmentalist
Other Info:
Married in 1966 to Lady Charlene Nelson, has three children and five grandchildren as well as a great-grandson. Had a younger brother named Francis.

Character Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Granluras
Character Name: Brendan Muirhead
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 38
Character Height: 5’8.25”
Character Weight: 167 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job: Employee at NatWest (2001-2007); Employee of the SNP Treasury (2007-2016); Assistant Manager for the NatWest Paisley Branch (2007-2015); MSP for Renfrewshire South (2016-present); Treasurer of the SNP (2017-present)
Appearance:
Character Constituency of Origin: Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Character Constituency of Residence: Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland; Office Location: Johnstone, Scotland
Character Party Affiliation: Scottish National Party
Main Strengths: Young, seen as a fresh face by the SNP; experienced in finance and economics; moderate Scottish regionalist; descendant of early SNP leader; ambitious (could be a weakness too, as he has endorsed and created a few outlandish bills); sociable; has an appreciation of environmental concerns and farmers due to extended family (uncle owns farm); very proficient when it comes technology
Main Weaknesses: Seen by some as an ally of Big Banks; closeted Soft Eurosceptic; hasn’t created much of a bipartisan record; oratory skills are not extraordinary; somewhat of a royalist; has gotten drunk some times (and I mean Scottish level drunkenness); hasn’t traveled far beyond Scotland

Biography: Brendan was born on July 9, 1978. His father was James Muirhead, the grandson of Robert Muirhead, the 2nd President of the Scottish National Party. His mother was Jamesine Bontine, was a Chairlady of the Edinburgh Society for Women’s Suffrage and a Secretary of Margaret Ewing. Brendan had a normal childhood, but one which was politicized due to his father’s Scottish nationalist heritage, and his mother’s political activities. Brendan was interested in debates and politics at an early age as a result, and began trying to join debate clubs or any similar groups at his school.

However, as time went on he was dissuaded from politics as he felt like it didn’t fall in line with his personality. As the years passed and he entered high school, Brendan began developing an interest in his future profession, finances. He took up relevant elective classes and performed satisfactory in them all. Upon graduation, Brendan enrolled into the University of West Scotland. He began studying Business & Finance their, seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in the subject. He graduated in 1999, equipped with a Bachelor’s and his eye set on NatWest, one of Scotland’s most prestigious banking/financial services company.

Brendan became an employee for NatWest in 2001, working for the Paisley-based West Scotland branch of the company. He worked there, performing very proficiently - a quality that did not go unappreciated or unrecognized by his superiors - in his duties, for six years. After two promotions, the second of which elevated him to the position of Senior Financial Planning Manager. In 2007, he was promoted for the third time to the position of Assistant Manager. Around the same time, he joined the SNP as a member of the Party Treasury. He was also proficient in his duties in the SNP, dealing with party finances with ingenuintive methods and sometimes outsourcing to NatWest.

While Brendan had originally planned not to become political, despite his position in the SNP, he slowly became politicized. He began to develop political views, in 2012 he officially joined the SNP, and he was increasingly persuaded by his colleauges to run in the 2016 general election. In the summer of 2015, he made his decision, and with the assistance of the former Treasurer of the SNP, Owen Kerr, he became the SNP Candidate for the Refrewnshire Constiutency. While lacking name recognition, his unique style, political positions, and youthfulness were well-recieved by his constituents, and his popularity began to increase.

By the last week of April, 2016, the week before the election, Brendan was polling ahead of his Labour and Conservative opponents. Brendan won 57.5% of the vote, being sworn in on the 12 of May. Brendan was assigned to the Finance and Constitution Committee, using his decade plus of experience to perform as the Committee’s most efficient member. As the Committee had a Chairman already, and he was popular, Brendan could not be given that position. Instead, the SNP leadership deliberated and presented him with the role of Treasurer of the SNP.

Brendan accepted the position and began working as Treasurer on August 22, 2016. Since then, Brendan has carried out his parliamentary duties swiftly; promoted his political views - building a caucus around him; and has sought the position of party leader, believing he can instill a new age of politics in the SNP that will satisfy both the nationalists and unionists.

Other Info: Begins speaking in a thick Scottish accent when angry/excited; dating, not married
I apologize if this seems like a “Hotshot” app, but I just wanted Brendan to have the “fresh face” characteristic, as stated in the main strengths. As a result, I had to squeeze in his positions and that’s why it might look like he is the always successfully, fast rising type of character. But he isn’t supposed to be. So hopefully you don’t hold that against me and can accept this app.

NS Nation Name: Mistolia
Character Name: Hon. Edgar Alexander Itchington-Barley LLB FRCO
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 45
Character Height: 6'
Character Weight: 80kg
Character Position/Role/Job: MP for Tunbridge Wells, Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor
Appearance: (Image) but slightly younger
Character Constituency of Origin: Tunbridge Wells
Character Constituency of Residence: Tunbridge Wells
Character Party Affiliation: Conservative
Main Strengths: Intelligent, good strategic thinker, extensive knowledge of law and parliamentary procedure and precedent
Main Weaknesses: Considered to have virtually no popular appeal, secretive and reserved, comes off as aloof and condescending in interviews and in public, alcoholic, not trusted by public or party
Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)

Born in 1972 as the second son of aristocrat and army officer Viscount Barley and socialite Eleanor FitzDavid, Edgar grew up in a country home not far from that famous bastion of 'Middle England', Tunbridge Wells. Edgar attended Westminster School in London, where he was both a choirboy and an organ scholar. Edgar's father died when he was 15 in a riding accident, leaving the Viscountcy - and most of the estate - to Edgar's older brother, Peregrine, who had always been their father's favourite, while Edgar had been favoured by their mother. The brothers were not close, nor were their parents. Edgar gained almost straight As at O Level, and three As at A Level, in History, English Literature and Latin. Edgar was then organ scholar at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he studied Law, before going on to train as a lawyer with Lincoln's Inn. During his career as a barrister, Edgar was organist at the Church of St Mary le Bow in London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists in 1999. Edgar married in 1995, and has two children - Edward (12) and Lucia (9).

Edgar joined the Conservative Party in 2001, and became MP for Tunbridge Wells in the 2005 election, with a sizeable majority. He became a trusted voice on legal issues in Parliament, and would often give advice to the leadership of the Conservative Party. By the time of the 2010 election, Edgar was an influential figure in the Conservative Party, leading a small group of liberal-conservative MPs. Edgar had suffered from excessive drinking since he was a student in his last year at Westminster, and this became more of an issue as his legal career progressed. Although he considers himself a member of the Church of England, Edgar hasn't attended church since 2000. His organ skills have been neglected.

After the Conservative Party victory in 2010, Edgar was made Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, and served as a loyal member of Archibald Wyvern's cabinet. Edgar campaigned for Remain in the referendum, although he made few public appearances, preferring to write long opinion pieces for The Times. After the remain defeat, Edgar was one of the last to call for Wyvern's removal, and has fallen out of favour with his fellow Conservatives for refusing to take part in any pro-leave government. His position in the government is very insecure.

Other Info:

Socially Liberal: Pro-Gay rights, Pro-Choice, Pro-trans rights
Economics: Generally pushes a return to Keynesian style policies, privately objected to austerity policies
Brexit: Very pro-remain, supports greater European Integration
NHS: Supports increasing privatisation of the NHS, with a system of state-provided health insurance instead
Defence: Supports increased defence spending, and renewal of Trident
Environment: Has kept quiet, but voted in favour of pro-environment policies

I have read and accept the rules of the roleplay: Mistolia

Yeah, my bad, I didn't make that clear enough. I've removed the bit about him being witty and likeable in person, as the aloof bit is more important. I was more going for someone who can get along with people privately (despite remaining reserved - he doesn't generally make close friendships with other politicians), but who is generally pretty useless with the general public.

I apologise for what I have done, and I hope you shall find it in your hearts to forgive me for my crimes against the internet.

Your crimes against the internet and especially NationStates are hereby forgiven.

Now I have an issue with his knowledge of law and the influence it has brought him. If you could tone it down I would appreciate that.

In the mean time I will contact Kelvinsi regarding his possible approval for this Cabinet post.

In your app you said he wants to become leader of the SNP. As long as he doesn't do it too quickly and/or without putting enough effort into it then I'm fine with it. I don't think you're going to do either of the things I just mentioned, but I'm just warning you against them just out of caution.

Oh, yeah I definitely won’t. It’ll take some time, he is only been an MSP for one year. He’s going to build up power as Treasurer for a bit, and then begin pulling strings and playing cards. I’m not gonna unrealistically rush this.

Now I have an issue with his knowledge of law and the influence it has brought him. If you could tone it down I would appreciate that.

In the mean time I will contact Kelvinsi regarding his possible approval for this Cabinet post.

Lets hope this attempt at a reply doesn't break the internet.

I'll be happy to tone down the influence part, but I'd rather he kept his knowledge of Law, him being a well-trained lawyer. I understand if the request for a cabinet role is denied, although I'd obviously like it to be approved.

He became part of a small group of liberal-conservative MPs, of which he was soon seen as the senior legal expert.

Mistolia wrote:Some of his strengths and weaknesses seem to contradict themselves, at least partially. He's said to be witty and likeable in person while also being reserved and secretive? Also, if he's witty and likeable how does he come off as condescending during interviews? Is it him being stressed or anxious to be in front of a camera? Either way this could use further explanation.

By the time of the 2010 election, Edgar was an influential figure in the Conservative Party, leading a small group of liberal-conservative MPs.

I see no major problems with this person serving in cabinet, 45 is a bit on the young side, but not extraordinarily so.

So why wasn’t there a 2016 election? Was the 2011 Fixed-terms Parliament Act never passed IC?

I have an interview with Anita Benn coming out tommorow.

Conservatives really need a second candidate.
