Update One: Surviving the Fall, and Invasion

Postby Benuty » Fri Nov 09, 2018 10:27 pm

Before the factions take over the ruins of what used to Oklahoma City it first has to fall by invasion, and the survivors must contend with this in many ways.

I-Invasion

The nine riders with their loyal death cultists and the aid of summoned eldritch entities are slowly carving a path across the earth bringing an end to civilization. Currently half of humanity is dead, and the world is ending, but the nine riders are taking their time enjoying their various conquests across the earth. One of the nine riders will lead an invasion into Oklahoma City, and the citizens and refugees trapped here will be subjected to various horrors both by man, and eldritch abomination as the military fruitlessly tries to defend the place. The nine riders rule over a considerable amount of territory by now so one more city won't mean much to them. War is like a fine art especially with the aid of the various cult chapters helping to end the place of humans as the dominant species on the planet.

II-Fall

The cities fall will be full of brutality, and pointless violence as the military tries to defend the place they are assigned to. They will likely damage several areas of the city in some degree with artillery barrages hoping to stall the enemies progress. This is an enemy only slightly hindered by modern weaponry so it won't do much. After they retreat the government will attempt a counter-offensive which will fail just as the defense had. The survivors during this time will either go increasingly paranoid, mad or end their lives rather than face the horrors outside their boarded doors.

III-Survival

Those who don't become paranoid wrecks shooting everything that moves, mad, or dead from either the monsters or suicide will likely be focused on one thing only (their survival). For about a week after the military offensive, and before the first factions arrive the city will be a hellscape, and survivors (such as your group) will have to use tunnels, and other stealthy methods to move around. Of course, there are plenty of ways to focus on the survival of the group in the rundown apartment until some semblance of order comes around. What actions you choose to take will have an impact on the general fate of the city so please be aware. A group that transforms into ruthless bandits with an addiction to power will likely degrade the state of humanity compared to a group that takes only what it needs.

A) State of Humanity

It's a simple morality system in which an outside force observes the actions of the group and posts the appropriate reaction. A group ruthlessly looting the city at expense of others will degrade the conditions of the city increasing difficulty.

B) Safehouses

Either due to luck or some serious occult protection, these places are run by still sane humans willing to let you use them as shelters while you roam across the city. Direct traffic across the city after the fall will be almost impossible especially depending on the factions relations to you.

C) Traps

In the initial days after the fall, you will have to rely on a series of traps to distract your enemies as ammunition won't always be the answer. "Buzzers" are traps that one remotely activated will distract enemies by generating an enormously loud sound. This will give you a brief window for you, and others with you to retreat to a safer location. "Blasters" are sensitive explosives used to ambush enemy parties, and give you an edge over them in combat. "Tricks" will primarily be ambush traps covering holes or cages in order to get an enemy neutralized, and out of the fight.

They can be especially useful for bounty hunting or assassination jobs. That said they have their uses for early on after the fall as well. There will likely be more traps than this, but a lot of the time your guns alone won't be enough to do anything against monsters, and such early on.

D) Looting/Other Survivors.

While you will need to loot supplies from stores, and other places sometimes other groups will have what you need. You can either choose to bargain with them or run in guns blazing and take their stuff. Either killing them or leaving them to starve or be killed by the various horrors will result in the cities further degradation.

Wrote the wife's application first; husband's is on its way.

Name: Nadelia "Nell" Putnam Choate
Age: 28
Occupation: Wife of the Consul General of New England for the Columbian Mid-West
Appearance:
Image

Nationality: New Englander
Belongings: (Important items that they own.)
- New England diplomatic passport.
- Handbag.
- Precious jewelry.
- A few fine dresses.
- Unknown occultist pendant, supposedly protective.
- Copy of keys to the New England Consulate in Oklahoma City, and her residence there.
- Christmas letter from her family in New England.
- A popular novel.
- Small wad of cash, both Columbian and New English.
- Jar of strawberry preserve, and crackers.
- Kit of first aid supplies.
- Makeup, and toiletries.
- Portable victrola.
- Derringer which she keeps hidden at her boots.
Strengths, and Skills: Nell Choate possesses an acute mind, which may be her greatest asset. A "gray eminence" in interpersonal matters, gleaned from intuition and observation, Nell has high diplomacy skill and serves as her husband's greatest advisor. It is primarily due to her efforts that Edwin has rose quickly in the hierarchy of the New England state department. Another skill she possesses is that of a capable shot with a handgun; she is better at handling the idea of conflict than her husband. Still, she prefers diplomatic resolution.
Weaknesses: While healthy, she is not physically strong and is not suited for close combat. She has lived comfortably her whole life, and it will take her a bit of work to become used the austerity of the apocalypse.
Personality: Shrewd, fair, quick, headstrong, and proud, Nell is a strong and resolute woman who wishes to receive the most out of life. After imposed seclusion in her youth, she no longer has wishes to be told what to do; a desire which her meek husband respects. Normally cordial in public, Nell is best at using soft power to build influence; in private, she knows her way with threats and bluffs. Cautiously optimistic, Nell believes that she can survive whatever comes her way. Though officially Congregationalist in religion, she is effectively agnostic.
Likes: Nell enjoys reading, fine music, attending local society events, and participating actively in her husband's work at the consulate. She is interested in technological development and political matter (she is the daughter of a politician), but not overly so. She also has a slight interest in occult matters, due to a mysterious old friend of hers in Massachusetts.
Dislikes: Nell dislikes resting on her laurels and hates barbarity (she disdains the slavery of Columbia, hoping that abolition will come). Disorder disgusts her.
Goals: She wishes to escape the current predicament intact, preserve her way of life... and perhaps see the seaside of New England once again. She would also like to find the mysterious Asenath Goldthwait, if she still exists (see biography).
Fears: As much as she may have felt hampered in her old New England home, she is afraid of the thought of never seeing her family again. She also would prefer not to die.

Biography: Nell Putnam was born June 4, 1933, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in New England, to affluent business leader and future senator Anthony Putnam and his wife Imogene, and was the youngest of 5 siblings. Her father, a cultured progressive interested in the politics of the New English state and a supporter of Chancellor Kennedy, ran successfully for office as a senator representing Massachusetts in 1947. Growing up in Ipswich, she enjoyed a privileged life thanks to her family's high standing and affluence in the Dominion, and Nell grew up comfortably. Yet she was far from an indolent, and possessed from a young age an active mind and spirit. Nell excelled in her primary and secondary studies; by the age of 18 she had deigns on going away to Mount Holyoke College or even perhaps Radcliffe. in At the instance of her mother, she took a year off for travel (and to perhaps find a suitor, which did not happen), to start her education in 1952. Yet 1952 was to be an ill-fated year: first, her mother unfortunately perished of a sudden illness, and then came the week of Horror in the sky after which occultists seemed to rise up in the darkest corners of New England and create disorder throughout the Dominion.

In such a dire time, the overworked Senator Putnam saw it ill-fit to have his youngest daughter go away during this crisis while he was occupied at government in Hartford, and as such her university dreams were dashed; she agreed to a life of private tutelage offered to her under the guide of hired staff at the family estate in Ipswich. In addition to traditional studies, Nell was to be taught at home the art of self-defense - in case the need arose - and in this effort taught to shoot. Yet, Nell despised this life shut away in the family estate; she wished for some manner of adventure. She felt unconnected to most of her tutors as well, who were mostly boring old academics, barring one: a genius woman and teacher of literature named Asenath Goldthwait. Unlike most her tutors, dear Asenath was not afraid to break professional boundaries for the act of friendship, and was close enough to Nell's age that a feeling of sisterhood arose between them. Sometimes they would even steal away from the estate to visit the seaside marshes, despite knowing from all-too-real horror stories of strangers lurking in such remote places. Yet Nell always felt safe with Asenath, as if she felt nothing would harm her when in her presence. Between lessons she confided in her dear tutor, and Asenath told her to always be brave, strong, and resistant. On Nell's 22nd birthday, Asenath gave her a small wrapped box, and implored her not to open it until the day after.

The day after Nell's 22nd birthday, Asenath did not show up for lessons. When Nell approached her father, home after a long absence in Hartford, about the matter, he was bewildered. According to him, he never hired an Asenath. She asked the servants, and they also could provide no recollection of the person. Shocked, Nell ran up to her chambers. She found the gift box Asenath had given her and quickly opened it. Inside was an ornate pendant, carved with strange marking and festooned with small elements. The young woman recognized it as a sort of occultist charm, a type of thing she had been warned about as dangerous. A small vague note, written in Asenath's hand in an ink that disappeared not long after its text's reveal, stated that no harm would come to the bearer - and that she should not fear what was to come. Nell was troubled. Asenath was one of them, those occultists she had heard so much about? Had she been a mere infiltrator, looking for weaknesses in her house's integrity? Nell pondered for a moment, considering destroying the charm, but then remembered the fond, genuine, friendship the two had enjoyed. Ergo, Nell decided to retain the pendant, hiding it away but keeping it close... in case her old friend's words came true.

Not long after, Nell was permitted to accompany her father to Hartford. All her siblings had left and married, and Nell was expected to do the same: how could this happen if she were to be shut up with her books? Nell argued this matter, and her dear father acquiesced. The time came at the end of 1955, when at a new year's party she met the mild-mannered civil servant Edwin Choate. Eddie was a sweet fellow, and no match for Nell's ambitions. Yet they fell in love, and by the next year they were engaged, and soon to be married.

At the start of 1957, Nell's father was appointed Secretary of State by Chancellor Kennedy after the mysterious disappearance of the former office holder. By the next year, Nell had grown tired of regimented life in Hartford, with mobility being much limited due to the ongoing situation within the Dominion. She convinced her dear husband to apply for foreign service. Upon his hesitant application, Nell used her father's new position for her advantage, and persuaded old papa that by the time the year was gone that her dear Robert well-deserving of a change in pace. He is a much capable diplomat, Nel dropped. He would do better in our service abroad, Nell hinted. Secretary Putnam was beaten down by the year's end, and soon not only did Robert complete his foreign certification but was also quickly given a posting abroad as Consul General for New England in the Columbian city of Oklahoma.

Thus, by the start of 1959, Ed and Nell Choate had settled down in the city. Though Edwin was unready at the time for the posting, Nell's capabilities made up for it, and the consulate ran smoothly. As far as consulates went, the New England one of Oklahoma City was relatively sedate due to the trade node being less important for New England than the Upper and Lower Souths or even California. Yet it was a change of pace, and Nell was able to spread her wings with new independence; Edwin knew better than to try to contain her. She became respected among not only the small community of New Englanders in city, but also among the Columbian urbanites. For the few years afterward, everything seemed well.

Now, not so much.

With the new Horror of 1962, Nell is confronted with a new challenge: the world falling apart. A new "rising" of terrible things occurred thirty days ago, and since that time Nell has been troubled. Society events ended, and people lived in fear. Yet she felt it her (officially her husband's) job to ensure the safety of the region's New Englanders and not abandon the mission. In this quest they remained in Oklahoma City while most fled (and likely perished), with Ed promising that they'd leave as soon as "the call" came. That call never came from New England, and ergo the couple still remains in the Columbian city. Fortunately (for the moment), Oklahoma City appears to be a safe zone. But safe for how long? Should they try to leave, or wait for what may come?

Goals: Help all New Englanders in the Columbian Mid-West get to safety, and go back home to New England without dying.
Fears: Fear of clowns, especially spooky ones. Dying is another big one too. Spooky occultism, in general.

Biography: (Nell's was so long I'm going to make this short)
Edwin Choate was born in 1929 to a well-to-do Boston family, the youngest of 4 brothers. In his childhood, he was somewhat ignored. He was a member of the Boy Scouts. He did well at school, though was often picked on for his diligence and trusting nature. After receiving a B.A. degree at Brown University in Providence, Edwin decided to apply for a job in the New England state department. He attained a job in the civil service at Hartford, and moved there promptly. That was 1952, the same year as the Horror. Following the second "rising," Edwin's life in the capital did not change very much. He worked, and he lived.

At the 1956 new year's party at the Capitol, Edwin met his future wife Nadelia Putnam, the daughter of a Dominion Senator. To him she was beautiful and quite independent in nature, and he became attracted to her qualities. The feeling was mutual, and the two soon became a couple that was to be married. Little did he know at the time that her father would soon become his boss.

Nell encouraged him to be more ambitious, and so he applied for a foreign service position in the state department. Due to some maneuvers of Nell with her father which Edwin was mostly kept out-of-the-loop from, in not much time at all he soon had a new job as Consul General of New England in the Columbian city of Oklahoma.

Edwin took his new career seriously, and devoted himself to doing what he feels is right for New England. As the Columbian Mid-West was not an important trade node for New England, Edwin mostly dealt with day-to-day bureaucratic work which he was familiar with. His wife Nell played an active role in the consulate, being almost exclusive in change of public relations. Edwin did not try to stop her, seeing her assertion as a great asset, and would consult her about major work items. With a couple years, he came to be a generally liked man in Oklahoma City, if not the most exciting.

When the Horror of 1962 began, Edwin tried to carry out business-as-usual at the consulate. As the circumstance came to be more and more dire, Edwin devoted himself to getting New Englanders in the region to safety. Devoted to the purpose of his mission, he did not want to leave until the New English government recalled him. Yet this awaited event never happened, perhaps because of internal disorder in the Dominion itself, and as such the Choates remain in Oklahoma City. What will he (and Nell) do next?

RP EXAMPLE: Ditto with Nell's.

Also, could the Choates be added to the RP roster in the OP after acceptance? I've been in a few RPs where they always forget to do that.

Oho a morality system, very interesting. On the note of traps how likely is it that any of our character's will know how to construct them?

Occupation: Consul General of New England for the Columbian Mid-West
Appearance:
Nationality: New Englander
Belongings: (Important items that they own.)
- New England diplomatic passport.
- Diplomatic work documents, including those on New Englanders in the region.
- Keys to the New England Consulate in Oklahoma City, and to his residence.
- A briefcase and a suitcase, with some nice suits.
- Toiletries.
- Latest newspaper.
- Bank account information.
- Radio (in residence, can not easily move).
- Victrola (in residence, can not easily move) and records.
- Bag for food (access to cupboard of food in their residence).
- Wad of cash, some Columbian and some New English.
- Pack of matches.
- Postcard (Dated Feb. 8, 1962) from his sister Caroline's vacation in Miami, Florida, depicting a sunny beach.
- Almost 3 month old Christmas fruitcake from his mother.
- Small pocket bible, in case someone might need to swear on it.
- Derringer (it was Nel's idea).
Strengths, and Skills: Edwin is a capable diplomat, if not the most experienced, and always prefers mediation over conflict. He knows some basic survival skills from a period as an above-average Boy Scout in his boyhood. He is physically robust.
Weaknesses: Consul Hale is averse to conflict, and not very good at combat. He is a trusting person, and relatively meek, which could lead him to trouble. He is not used to austerity either.
Personality: Kind, meek, trusting, content, and yet hard-working, Edwin is a good person who only wants whats best for his dear Nel... and the world. He is not as quick as his wife nor posses her ambition and assertion, but still he is not dull. He believes that if one works hard, good will come, and is devoted to his diplomatic mission. He switches between optimism and pessimism in his outlook, depending on the circumstances. A tad more religious than his wife, but not overly so.
Likes: Normalcy, routine, and seeing good deeds done are things Edwin enjoys to see. In his spare time, He likes to read, listen to the radio, attending functions with his wife, and nice cuisine. He is passively interested in technology and politics. Likes airships.
Dislikes: Disorder and disarray. He has no interest in the occult.
Goals: Help all New Englanders in the Columbian Mid-West get to safety, and go back home to New England without dying.
Fears: Fear of clowns, especially spooky ones. Dying is another big one too. Spooky occultism, in general.

Biography: (Nel's was so long I'm going to make this short)
Edwin Choate was born in 1930 to a well-to-do Boston family, the youngest of 4 brothers.

Nel encouraged him to be more ambitious, and so he applied for a foreign service position in the state department. Due to some maneuvers of Nel with her father which Edwin was mostly kept out-of-the-loop from, in not much time at all he soon had a new job as Consul General of New England in the Columbian city of Oklahoma.

Edwin took his new career seriously, and devoted himself to doing what he feels is right for New England. As the Columbian Mid-West was not an important trade node for New England, Edwin mostly dealt with day-to-day bureaucratic work which he was familiar with. His wife Nel played an active role in the consulate, being almost exclusive in change of public relations.

What will he (and Nel) do next?

RP EXAMPLE: Ditto with Nel's.

Second application is accepted.

Initially? Not very likely, but there will be plenty of them put in by survivors, and the military trying to defend their areas. After their inevitable death or retreat the traps will still be left up, and some places might have manuals on how to build them. The group during the first week will have to use them as ammunition probably won't have much of an effect on the invasion force (unless you have a lot of it). The first week will be about survival, and looting until the factions make camp across the city ruins.

A small question: what weapons is the Columbian military be armed with? I assume we'll be able to pick some up after the eldritch abominations are done eating the poor sods.

I have changed my mind. My character is going to be a ninja or gunslinger. The reason I am not going to be playing a Fencer or a Ronin is that a ninja or a gunslinger is more appropriate for this setting.

A Ninja would invoke a Shogunate Special Ops, whilst a Ronin invokes an independent Samurai sho is doing good deeds to impress people into siding with the Shogunate. The concept of Samurai is alive and well in this timeline, and my guy is I guess "technically" a Ronin (Trained in theology and served in the IJA equivalent of a MASH). A tanky High San Healer build.

So go with a gunslinger, or a fellow surgeon. We may lack in something to heal very real wounds or combat the more otherworldly enemies.

Well, primarily weapons at least on a personal defense basis have gone into something out of clockwork filled with gears, and the like. They aren't going to be regular weapons since this is a very schizo-tech world that people are living in. The military will have a few weapons closer to our world equivalent in 1962, but other than that the predominant style is clockwork.

I decided to standardize "Nel" to Nell in the Choates' applications, appeasing the spell checker and also for plausibility's sake. Could you please change it in the roster too?
