The Sunken Church Expedition
With a combination of Frey's literally lightning quick initial attack, Arden and Corven's usual role as the physical workload the giant mosquito swarm was soon thinned enough where their self preservation kicked in driving them to fly up into the air, or at least the few that remained, and go back into the depths of the swamp. Twig's head lunged forward revealing an astonishingly long neck to snap another mosquito that was too late to join its swarm. He licked his beak and burped a loud one before laughing heartily. Seigfried meanwhile threw his zweihander at another late escape and impaled it on a sign post near the port. With the danger to the town over with it soon flourished back to life as people came out all at once from their houses and random buildings. A cow being lead by a teenage boy out of a weaver's shop signaled that livestock also having been apparently hid inside some huts and other buildings. A crowd of them gathered near the docks to look at the newly arrived caravan.

"By George this place already smells like rotten eggs and swamp gas. I don't think we needed some overgrown critters," muttered Seigfried pulling his zweinhader out of the sign post. The large gouged out section had the main stalk comically wilt at a sharp angle which made Seigfried look from side to side before hustling back to the caravan, "Astounding work chaps! If this town has a tavern I'll buy you all a round!"

A little while later an official from the town's government, presumably elders or some lowly noble his thick accent made it hard on the ears, had arrived to direct the caravan to a large grassy spot they could make camp for the day. The caravan formed a circle around the large field and the guards had pitched in together to make a bonfire for the group. Siegfried had gone to the leadership's tent where Captain Wallace's constant yelling was a sign Siegfried was having a bit too much fun poking at the people inside. By nightfall, Seigfried when back to his Legionnaires to give them the news.

"Alright mateys, here's what''s what. Good news is the guide said it should be safe sailing on pontoons down an inland delta. Bad news is we're being sent off as the vanguard to secure the church before the rest of the caravan arrives. Greatest news is we're riding on hippopotamuses on the way there! Rented but its on the University's coin. Now let me tell you all about those hippos...."

Seigfried would go on a several minute long tangent describing hippos and their biology such as having tusks as large as a man arm and their sweat looking like blood but the call of the night would soon bring sleep upon the camp. By morning the Legionnaires and the guide would arrive to another port on the far side of the town where the enormous beasts were waiting for them. Large boat themed saddled to keep their riders aloft even when they submerged completely straddled their fat backs.

"I get the really fat one with a overgrown tooth," shouted Seigfried as has he hopped onto his own hippo taking the reigns from a handler.

There were enough hippos for everyone else but Twig had chosen to just swim alongside their hippos clearly feeling at home. Their ride there would be mostly interrupted bar a close call with what appeared to be a felled tree a half submerged giant crocodile was just blinked at sunk beneath the swamp water. Finally the supposed location of the church was upon them as a large grey statue of a veiled woman was jutting out at the tip of one island on the delta. It was almost covered entirely in moss and algae but the general shape as unmistakable.

"Now this is a wonderful find!," said Seigfried pumping his armored fist into the air.

Just then however a mighty wind came from further inland at seemingly no warning violently churning the land and water. Clumps of mud and grass were flung at the group while the swamp water sloshed behind them. The hippos began to startle but what would catch everyone's attention was Seigfried falling over into the water only to be caught by Twig. To anyone not paying attention to that the moss and plants covering the statue would slink off and fall to the ground before coalescing into a giant vague shape of a headless hunched over man. It raised its arm and flung forward a vine to whip whoever happened to be closest.

Roxana Ma'gonid
"General store it is then," said Roxana not bothering to hear what Dido chose.

The trio, or quartet counting Methusula, would head on over to the General Store where Roxana would tie her donkey to a post in front next to some horses. Roxana would grab a cloth bag from a satchel on her donkey and then hop up the small set of stairs to skip them. For such a distant location from civilization it was surprisingly well stocked with the wooden shelves holding a great bounty upon them. The sides of the store had several rock and stone displays which were apparently for sale.

"Hey, Syl why don't you handle questioning the shopkeeper. Me and Dido can go collect stuff to purchase," suggested Roxana before turning to Dido, "Now you don't touch anything you're not supposed to and don't break or drop anything. Got it? Good."

The tense duo would go over to collect their food mostly consisting of dried fruits, salted meats, and pots of water. Roxana however did keep an eye out for a certain delicacy she heard could be found in the area. It was something consisting of several dried nuts rolled together into clumps and slathered with honey to make it stick. She was sure it would be just what Syl would need to get her energy back up.

Despite the fact that he had lived countless adventures out in the high seas during his teenage years, that day Frey had definitely found himself in the middle of a new and strange experience. It wasn't every day that one got to ride some sort of massive river pig that could probably eat a horse, and yet, that was exactly what he and the other legionnaires were doing, traveling downriver on the backs of those beasts that Siegfried called hippos while looking for the mythical sunken church in order to begin their spelunking. About damn time too. I've only here three days but I'm not a fan of the swamp.

The girls of the swamp were another matter entirely, but there weren't any around.

Suddenly, as they arrived at the island in the delta, the sight of a large, mossy statue greeted them, indicating the location of the sunken church. Frey cheered loudly, but as the gust of wind abruptly buffeted them, frightening their mounts and letting loose the decay around them, he realized that perhaps he had been much too quick in believing their journey had gone by without any complications. Seeing Siegfried fall overboard - overhippo? - and onto the river, the blond man quickly looked over the side of his boat-like saddle, only to spot Twig the turtle man catch the heavily armored knight with little issue. Man, turtle people sure are something huh?

The sound of rustling plant matter caught his attention, and the rogue turned around only to see a vine being flung straight towards him. Acting on instinct, he brought up his cutlass and blocked the whip with it, but the vine wrapped around the blade of the weapon and pulled it right out of his grasp, leaving it to fall on the island on the delta, next to the strange mossy monstrosity that he only now noticed.

"I swear, things get more ridiculous with every passing contract." The rogue remarked. Without missing a beat, he pulled out his estoc and pointed it at the moss creature before it could lash out again, firing a bolt of thunder straight towards it in hopes of putting it out of commission.

Sylanna blinked as she heard Roxana make a decision immediately after she had given her opinion, not waiting to hear from the third member of their party at all, which surprised her. She knew that there was some bad blood between them, but dismissing a fellow legionnaire out of hand like that? Ouch. The Snow Elf thought as she watched her friend walk up to Methuselah and begin leading him towards the general store. That has to sting.

Despite her mild shock, the blonde knight didn't hesitate to follow Roxana - despite having the same rank, she was content to cede the de facto leadership to her elvish peer - towards their destination, casting a sidelong glance at the High Elf that lingered for a moment. Well, I suppose it is no surprise that she can be rather childish at times. She mused, a small smile appearing on her lips until she noticed and suppressed it.

As they arrived at the general store, Sylanna watched her friend retrieve a bag and then skip up the set of stairs that led up to the door. Chuckling at the gesture, the significantly taller elf simply placed her foot at the very top and crossed the threshold into the store with a single step before looking around. While perhaps not impeccably clean, the store was quite well-stocked with foodstuffs and common supplies such as rope, flint and torches. Her eyes lingered for a moment on the stone displays that adorned the sides of the store, some of them clearly coming from the nearby mines, although others did not seem to belong in the area and were clearly part of someone's collection, brought from far away. One of them in particular caught her attention, a display of glistening black stone, polished to the point that she could see her reflection in it.

Her thoughts were interrupted as she herd Roxana ask her to handle the investigation while she took Dido to find supplies for the rest of their quest. Not having expected the outgoing elf to delegate that part of their mission, she nonetheless nodded, chuckling as Roxana immediately turned around to give stern instructions to the Solfataran.

Not wanting to let the others down, Sylanna made her way to the counter, where a man a few inches shorter than her, with graying hair and steely eyes, looked up at her, his expression displaying mild curiosity.

"It's not every day that you see mountain glass this far south." She remarked, the shopkeeper nodding.

"And it's not every day that you see an elf walk into a store around these parts, much less three of them at the same time." He stated, gesturing in the direction of Dido and Roxana with his head before turning back to Sylanna. "Anything I can do for you, miss?"

"Yes, actually. We're here on orders from the Duke. Can you tell me what's the situation like around here?" She said politely. The man's eyes widened for a moment.

"So they finally sent someone, huh? About damn time." He spoke. "Sorry, it's just... I've seen a lot of people go missing without the Duke doing anything." He apologized, and paused for a moment to regain his composure. "It all started about a week ago. There had been rumors that the miners had found something big prior to that, but all of a sudden an earthquake ripped through the mines and killed many of them. That was when everything started."

The man let out a forlorn sigh. "In the following week, people started disappearing at night. Mostly young women, actually, though the old priest disappeared as well. Some of the men decided to try and form a search party, but they were attacked by wolves as soon as they took one step too far from Zareen. It became a regular thing afterwards, meaning we couldn't go looking for our wives and daughters anymore."

After another brief pause, the shopkeeper looked at Sylanna dead in the eye. "If you ask me, I think there was something in the mines. Something evil. I don't know what it is but... I pray you can stop it."

Arden Rooke
The Great Bog

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arden had traveled a broad range across the temperate mainland. Odd jobs and caravan routes had shown him quite a few odd things. Riding some sort of submerged beast into a bug infested swamp and evading water reptiles the size of horses was nothing remotely like any of those previous experiences. The large swimming steads did not ride easy. They seemingly yawned at random moments, exposing their ferocious gaping maw and huffed large sprays of mist into their rider’s face. These “hippos” were just another addition to the long list of reasons why Rooke intended to never return to this region of the world ever again.

The Legionaries had rode (swam?) the waterways of the Great Bog ahead of the rest of the expedition - either to clear the way of any danger or because the Legionnaires were considered more expendable. They ended up reaching the supposed location of the Sunken Church without major incident. The whole site seemed eerie. Almost like an ancient place, frozen in time. The most prominent landmark was a moss-and-vine covered structure that was likely a statue of a woman, only given away by the human-like curves of the greenery surrounding it.

For a swamp, things seemed to get quiet. “Odd... “ Arden said to himself, glancing around the area. A great wind met his statement and water sloshed up and over his legs astride the hippo. The vines and moss lifted from the statue and became a headless monster. It quickly lashed out at Frey, who met it with his blade. When the vine tore it away, the former pirate drew forth his other weapon and shot lighting.

Rooke’s mount, either out of habit or shock, began to submerge beneath the water. “I hate these things!” He exclaimed to no one in particular, before grabbing his pack and leaping into the water before the hippo took him involuntarily beneath the water. Land. He had to get to land. Broad arm-strokes carried the Legionary to the edge of the nearest land-mass. Which... also was where the vine monster stood. His clothes soaked, Arden drew his forester's axe and charged the creature, intent to hack off its limbs.

Corven Roche
Sunken Church expedition

After wiping the last insect entrails from his sword, Corven sluggishly sheathed his weapon and let himself half collapse against the wagon’s frame as he slowly began to regain his breath. With the last of the once threatening swarm dead or fleeing, the hidden villagers began to emerge from their houses and gather around the newcomers.
“Your town sucks and you have a bug problem.” Corven managed to state as he wiped a foul-smelling glob of green blood from his face and went off in search of a tavern and bath. After drinking enough to wipe most of his memories of the previous fight, he did eventually manage to stumble his way back towards the camp before collapsing in an unconscious heap beside the bonfire’s warmth.

Waking up the next morning with a dozen new pains and a violently ringing headache, the mercenary stretched out his aching body and proceeded to get to work. Missing Siegfried’s hippo lecture in its entirety, Corven barely even batted a tired eye at the foreign beasts waiting for them before moving to straddle one without question and following the others further into the swamp. As the day went on and the recently dubbed vanguard pushed forward, Corven’s internal organs did eventually recovered enough for his mostly consistent quips to return. Calling out sights, poking fun at the ‘fat horses’ and occasionally making unsuccessful rhymes about the many smells surrounding them, he did what he could to keep himself occupied as he sat atop the large creatures back.

After a long ride through the thick waters, the group finally began to close in on the church as a veiled statue came into view. Relaxedly taking in the sights at the time, the sudden violent wind shift and hurled clumps of moss hit Corven hard and came dangerously close to knocking him clear from his saddle. Hearing a sudden splash as he clambered to save his grip, he managed to catch a glimpse of their newest shelled friend holding an armoured Siegfried aloft, and while leaving them far from being in the best formation for a fight, he did feel some relief at not being the only one caught off guard.

As he pulled himself back into his saddle and drew his blade free, it didn’t take long for him to find the threat before them.
“Well… Shit.” He muttered as his gaze shifted between the giant figure of moss towering before them and his somewhat mundane short sword. ‘The hell am I supposed to do here?!’ he thought as he considered his options. ‘…Screw it.’ He decided as he nudged his hippo forward and a yellow globule of light released from his hand started to dart around his figure.

“Come on you overgrown weed! Show me why druids think grass and twigs are so damn special!” He shouted as he separated from the group and tried draw attention to himself as he went. If he couldn’t do much offensively, then he’d do his best to draw some attacks away from the group.

Roxana Ma'gonid

When their supplies and information was restocked the Legionnaires headed back to load their haul onto Methuselah the donkey. Roxana fed her donkey a new head of cabbage she had bought just for him and she petted his mane while feeding him. Her eyes darted to the basket of food on either side of the donkey and he worried that special regional delicacy she bought for Syl wouldn't get crushed. It didn't exactly fell like right now would be the best moment to give it to her. It seemed this soon would be too desperate so maybe halfway to the quarry would suffice?

"Wait a minute," she said suddenly stopping her petting of Methusulah, "Where did Dido go? That slut. I swear if she went off to drink again uugh!"

Roxana then went to untie Methuslah's rope that kept him tied to the posts in front of the store but she simply sighed halfway through, "Sometimes I just wish people like her would just listen to what others say for once in their lives. But nooo she's made it her life's mission to ruin me."

The Sunken Church Expedition

The moss monster was too lumbering to dodge the instantaneous lightning attack that scorched through its upper body leaving a charred black mess in its wake. The stun from the devastation was enough for it to not notice the axeman hacking one of its limbs off but it soon retaliated by cracking a vine from its body to whip Arden across the chest. Whether it hit or not its attention was soon drawn by the shining orb of light darting all around Corven. The shambling mound stomped its way across the delta before its trunk like feet splashed against the swamp water as it tried to reach the man on the fleeing hippo. A great bulge of water exploded from behind the moss monster as Twig catapulted Seigfried into the air as he spun wildly with his zweihander outstretched.

The huge blade cut straight through the moss monster's abdomen splitting it in two as all three parties crashed into the water. Twig swiftly swam to rescue Siegfried from drowning, again, while the remains of the moss monster dissolved into a mass of plant matter. Order once again returned to their party and it was time to get the hippos out of the water to follow them. Siegfried carefully guided his out by waving a carrot in front of the giant beast's maw and he figured everyone else would be fine.

"Absolutely smashing job my chaps! Outstanding effort on all front!" boomed Siegfried patting his hippo on the nose, "Now I have discussed with Twig in his native tongue that he shall be tending to the hippos while we make the last leg of the journey. I won't lie to you men. There is a chance, just an ever present chance, that we...shall...be disappointed. Woe be us if we are. I remember one time I spent an entire week in a labyrinth only to find the chest at the end filled with some long dead noble's hair clippings. Oh my gracious that was terrible. You laddies ever have that happen?"

While helping load the supplies Roxana had bought onto the donkey, Sylanna laughed at her friend's energetic criticism of their Solfataran questmate. "You speak pretty harshly of her now, but you know, even though she had been harassing you since the morning of the day we took this contract, you still agreed to bring her along." She pointed out before turning to look at her. "You know what I think? That you secretly like being around her. Maybe she's more of a friend to you than you're willing to admit?" She teased the High Elf with a smile.

After a few moments, everything was loaded up. "Alright, we should get going now. If the quarry master can confirm the shopkeeper's story, then we're in for a more difficult quest than I had anticipated." The Snow Elf spoke. Then, she proceeded to relate what she had heard from the shopkeeper: the alleged discovery of the miners and the earthquake that followed, the disappearances of several young women and the priest, and the wolf attacks on anyone who ventured too far from the town to search for their missing daughters, sisters and wives. Notably, she yawned no less than three times while telling the story, and suspiciously looked as if she was suppressing another after she finished the story.

"I didn't catch much sleep yesterday, but I swear I'm fine to keep going." She assured the other woman. "Anyway, this sounds like a tough task for two people, so we'll have to be extra careful when we do venture beyond Zareen."

"Kind of." Frey said in response to SIegfried's question as he caught up with the group. It had been hard to convince his hippo to continue moving after the moss monster had been dealt with, but somehow he'd managed - possibly because it was more scared of the sword that summons thunder than it was of some now inert mass of leaves - and left the chubby creature in the care of their amphibian friend. "Except in my case it was with girls, not while adventuring. Let's just say, it has nothing to do with labyrinths and everything to do with chests. Clothes can be terribly deceiving."

As he spoke, he ran a hand over the dull blade of his estoc, feeling it still hot to the touch, which indicated that it still could not be used to shoot a bolt of lightning again. It was a neat little side effect, and Frey had been making use of it to plan his offensives ever since discovering it. Maybe I should call it something... let's see, it only works again once the metal cools so... cooldown?

Well, I guess it doesn't matter too much if it's only useful to me.

Looking around at the others and then back at Siegfried, the blond man spoke again. "So this is the sunken church, yes? Shall we get going then?"

Roxanna Ma'gonid

Roxana glowered at the ridiculous suggestion that she liked being around that despicable woman. She only took her onboard because she hoped she'd finally gain some respect but alas it appeared she was being naive. Her mood was soothed when the topic shifted back to official business as Roxana nodded along to the relayed information. It was a quite jarring series of events in this little hovel and there was definitely something going on. Her concern arose when Sylanna repeatedly yawned throughout her explanation no doubt due to not getting enough rest the way here.

"Indeed it'll be tough, but don't worry. Archers always have their companion's backs," smirked Roxana fastening the last bag onto Methuselah.

The two Legionnaires would set off towards the main quarry of the town with the plateau it was harbored on looking like an impossibly large stone book. The trail was a scraggly and barely maintained dirt road no doubt due to recent events but the odd line of trees and wooden fences kept the road on track. Around halfway through the short trip Roxana looked pensively at one of the wooden baskets on Methusulah before she quickly took of the cap to grab a glass vial of the honeyed nut treats. She walked around the donkey towards Syl to reach out with her arm to give the snacks to her friend.

"So I heard these are a local delicacy are really good for restoring energy," stammered Roxana with a light pink tinge to her cheeks, "And they're really good too so I'd thought you'd deserve them after how much you've pulled the mission so far."

Hearing the High Elf's reassuring words, Sylanna couldn't hide the slight grin that formed on her face. She wasn't one to suffer the ravages of doubt, of course, and while she wasn't sure what challenges awaited them as they uncovered the mystery of Zareen, she was quite confident in her abilities as a warrior and knew she could handle bandits and packs of wolves with ease - it was still comforting and encouraging to hear that a fellow legionnaire's got your back, and especially to hear it from a friend such as Roxana.

As the two walked the path towards the quarry in silence, the Snow Elf quietly contemplated the mountains ahead and the barren lands surrounding Zareen, admiring the particular kind of beauty present in a landscape like this. Inwardly, however, she was pondering the matter of what could await them on the road ahead of them, metaphorically speaking. What could those miners have possibly uncovered there in the bowels of the mountains that could have brought such misery upon them? Her mind wandered from possibility to possibility. Was it an ancient slumbering wyrm? Had they perhaps uncovered a lair of damned ones, or perhaps disturbed the resting site of an extremely powerful ghost?

She briefly considered the possibility of the miners inadvertently opening up a path to one of the devils' infamous underground valleys, but quickly discarded the idea. Surely if that was the case there would have been far more sightings, and she had only seen one devil throughout the whole mission so far, one that was moving away from Zareen, something that still greatly concerned her. On top of that, assuming it was something related - and it certainly seemed to be - the other three possibilities didn't seem to account for the increasing wolf attacks that had been plaguing the city, and in fact, after scouring her memories some more, she couldn't recall anything about a creature that lived underground and could subjugate packs of wild animals to its will.

The Snow Elf narrowed her eyes as something came to mind. She had heard that there existed more exotic types of undead across the world which had strange powers beyond what had been observed in known varieties. She hadn't observed any during her time in the Legion or as a member of the Wardens, except perhaps the necromancer himself, but perhaps that was what they were dealing with here? The thought was concerning.

What if... huh?

Amidst her musings, she was distracted by the sight of a small jar being pushed towards her, one that contained a honeyed delicacy within. Surprised, she looked up and found herself even more surprised by the sight of her friend Roxana, acting bashful as she explained that she had bought these local snacks while thinking of her. She found herself only half-hearing her words, however, as she continued to observe her face. Her cheeks, is she...?

Realizing that drawing the silence out would just make the other elf more uncomfortable, she hastily took the jar of treats from her. "I-I see. I'm only doing my job, but I'm flattered to hear that you think I deserve these." She said, smiling at the High Elf before opening the jar and taking a piece of the delicacy within, popping it into her mouth. Immediately, her eyes widened - the combination of sweet and nutty flavor was something new for the elven knight, but it grew on her immediately. "These are wonderful!" Sylanna exclaimed, suddenly feeling higher in spirits and energy both. "Thank you for these!"

Walking the dusty old path, she continued to eat the treats she got from Roxana, finding herself humming an upbeat tune along the way. Gone were the thoughts of undead abominations and ancient curses that coursed through her mind. For the time being at least, the Snow Elf was happy.

Corven Roche
Sunken Church expedition

‘Well this job just keeps getting stranger doesn’t it?’ Corven thought as he stood atop his charging hippo while the waters around them crashed and shook under the lumbering weight of the encroaching moss monster behind them and its furious swipes.

“Come on big guy, just keep us moving!” he shouted as he trained his eyes on the creature’s arm like extensions and readied himself to try and deflect the inevitable attacks bound to be sent his way. But as he stood and watched, a single thought continued to run across his mind ‘How in the name of all the gods am I supposed to deflect a tree?!’
Before making an improvised answer became a necessity though, a hurtling ball of blade and plate shot through the air at impossible speed and tore through the gargantuan creature's centre. Suddenly the deafening thrashing of plants fell silent and the swamp turned still as the monster stumbled then fell lifeless. ‘…Who the hell are these people?’ Corven finally asked himself with a new wave of confusion and intimidation passing over him as he watched the group’s turtle move to save their boisterous leader. After picking his jaw up from the floor, Corven sheathed his sword, petted his noble mount and moved to wordlessly re-join the others, being for the first time in his recent memory, stunned into silence. “That um... That just happened right?” He eventually asked as they moved towards the temple.

When the group had made it onto land and were about to start their next leg of the journey, Siegfried addressed them about what Corven considered to be the most likely outcome. Apart from still not being entirely sure about what is was they were looking for, he didn’t see coming back empty handed as much of an issue.
“Worst expedition find I’ve ever been a part of was some trek into a necromancer's tomb. Some local legend said it would be full of gold and treasures so sure enough, an expedition was made to find it. Turned out, all there was inside was a cursed coffin though. Ended up turning half the group undead on the spot and started a cave in on the rest of us. ‘Course, it turned out the party was planning to kill me along with the rest of the hired help after the trip, so I guess it all turned out pretty well in the end. And besides, if we find our goal today, great. Maybe we get a bonus for a job well done. If not, then no biggie. Some rich collectaholic might not get what they want but we’ll still get paid regardless… We do still get paid right?”

Roxana Ma'gonid

Roxana beamed at Sylanna at how much her gesture had been appreciated exhilarated that it had gotten her friends' spirits up. Although the tall elf woman didn't know it that smile of hers could be quite captivating and eliciting it now of all places was sure a morale booster. Roxana hummed her way back to her donkey Methusulah's side as the trio found continued to the mine's opening. It was quite a large mine and a array of turned over carts, picks, and ores were strewn about every which way. The elf took out a lantern and lit up their way through the bowls of the mesa mine. The pitch darkness was illuminated by their faint sphere of light acting like a bubble through the inky back. Somewhere along the mine they found a large crack on the wall wide enough for all of them to fit in. Beyond the crack of the wall was an incredibly spacious cavern filled with ruined stone buildings, statues, and other assorted debris. A dim light came from some glowing white rocks in the dead center of the ceiling.

"I guess this is the something big the shopkeeper mentioned mused," Roxana taking a few steps inside her face contorted to a glower as her eyes spotted a gang of armored humanoids down the ruined stone road they were on, "Looks like we have company. And not the pleasant kind."

A group of armed devils similar looking to the one they had fought before were strutting down the road towards them. Their fanged mouths snipping at the air and they had four swordsmen, two halberdiers, and two armed with mancatchers. The devils then began charging right towards them howling like mad beasts. Roxana swiftly drew her bow and shot the arrow right in the neck of one halberdier making trip and perish.

The Sunken Church Expedition

"Most certainly, laddie, we've meandered long enough in this blasted place," answered Seigfried but not before hearing Corven's response, "Oh that sounds mighty dreadful, good ol Corven. Those absolute bastards. Well we usually get paid the front cost which is usually half....I might not have figured out the details for this one tho."

It was a quiet walk to the so called sunken church, and the road there was filled with the croaking of frogs, chirps of swamp birds, howling of monkeys, and sounds of other more strange creatures. The building itself somewhat between the size of your average village temple or church and a full cathedral but as its name implied it was around halfway stuck through the ground that looked just like a table cloth being pulled into a specific spot. The entrance so to speak was a large hole in the front where there used to be a large decorative window. There was however something peculiar about the site. The ground around the building was of a rough and course stone and dirt rather then the mud and grass of the rest of the swamp almost as if it wasn't there originally.

"I'll be first to go my chaps!" eagerly said Seigfried bounding off towards the entrance.

He hopped inside and fell down to the first floor and the vast grey darkness of the interior met him. The seats below had long rotten away to nothingness but the alter at the very end of the church revealed a stark grey statue of a hooded woman. A set of double silver doors overgrown with ferns and dirt on top hinted at greater treasures below. However, they burst open to reveal a black wind to violently buffet them outside.

Arden Rooke
The Sunken Church

------------------------------------------------
The jubilation of Siegfried dispatching the swamp monster was soon curtailed by the possibility that this entire trek was for naught. Well, that wasn’t all bad. They were still getting half paid. Regardless, Rooke had come all this way for more than just money. Although Arden wouldn’t find purpose here, it might be the first piece of a puzzle. The blue-haired man sat up and winced at the stinging pain across his chest. The swamp guardian had lashed him good, but the armor across his chest his natural endurance kept his rib-cage from collapsing.

The walk to the sunken church was quiet, which was sort of surprising given Siegfried and Corvan were both present. The area around the church itself was more... civilized than first expected. Like some terrible giant had picked the church and the surrounding area itself and plopped it into the swamp. The mysterious surroundings did not deter the leading Gold-cloak however. Siegfried hopped into the opening with vigor. "Better get this over with," Arden said aloud to no one in particular. The novice Legionary sucked in his breath as if about to dive into a lake and followed right after. The first floor - and that was all it was, a floor - held nothing but a stonework alter at the far end. The state of the Hooded Lady was peculiar. "What faith does that hail from?" Arden asked.

The ancient doors at the end of the way slammed open with tremendous force and a dark force pressed against them. Rooke instinctively clawed on all-fours to make purchase on the rough-hewn stone of the floor. If he managed to get a grip on something, or resist this wind, he might just make it inside.

Upon arriving at the mines, Sylanna regretfully parted with her jar of treats, leaving it with Methuselah and heading into the tunnels with Roxana, moving to take point out of habit. The walk was fairly uneventful until the two elves came across a large crack in the wall that led to an enormous underground enclave, seemingly ruined a long time ago but impressive to behold nonetheless. Vestiges of some lost civilization, strange crystals, this place had all the makings of a place that should have been left to its slumber, but of course, the miners knew none of this.

Still, it seemed empty for the most part, so she could only wonder what had been uncovered here... and where it had gone.

The area didn't remain empty for long, however. The elven knight said nothing as she followed her friend further into the ruin, and soon enough several devils came into view. Sylanna's eyes narrowed as she recalled some of her earlier musings. Had she misjudged the situation, was a devil tunnel truly the mysterious cause of Zareen's ruin? But it didn't fully explain everything that had happened.

Every step we take this quest becomes more and more mysterious...

Now was not the time to worry about that, however. The devils presented a much more immediate concern, and under the dim light of the white crystals and the oil lamp, Sylanna removed her winged spear from its strap and took aim. Squinting to get a better view of the devils, she let loose the spear and it flew true, lodging itself in the chest of an unlucky mancatcher-wielding fiend. The others were clearly undeterred, however, which meant that she would have to prepare for a closer approach. Unsheathing her sword, she called upon Solskin and ran her hand across the polished steel blade. Bright flames erupted, wreathing the blade and temporarily blinding the demons as their light bathed the walls.

It's noon... but I don't need to fight too seriously against these things.

The first swordsman approached her while preparing an overhead slash. The Snow Elf quickly crouched low before darting forward, cutting open the devil's flesh with an ascending slash - her blade ended up in the perfect position to block another devil's sword, and a third's bounced off her buckler, leaving a mark on it. Before the fourth could attack her, she jumped back to put some distance between herself and the devils, though she only narrowly managed to avoid finding herself on the receiving end of a crude halberd.

"Three down, five to go." She smirked before charging at the devils once more.

Frey was hardly impressed by the oddness of the ground that surrounded the cathedral they had been looking for. He had seen weirder things, and he wasn't paid to figure out anything, he and the rest of the party were only sent to clear the way for the university folk - though it wouldn't hurt to look for any peculiar-looking bones or pieces of pottery in case they might help him impress one of the younger professors on the research team. He did note that the so-called sunken church wasn't really sunken, per se, but rather half-buried under the earth, but that was one for the brainiacs to figure out.

His tone changed slightly as he jumped into the church and immediately saw the glint of silver coming from the metallic doors at the far end of the room. Beginning to walk towards them, he also looked around at the church, recognizing its design, albeit that was hardly indicative of anything - churches were fairly universal as far as buildings went, even if the imagery and the style differed from place to place the overall structure tended to remain the same. The place did stir some memories though, and the rogue whistled as he continued to look around.

"This looks pretty similar to the church where I hid after hours with the bartender's daughter." He commented.

Glancing at his comrades, he noticed Rooke also absorbed in observing the area, wondering out loud what faith the statue of the hooded lady might belong to. "It's not one of the Nine Divines, so don't pay too much deference to it. Someone might find out." He said with a chuckle.

The fun and games ended quite quickly however, as the silvery doors burst open and a black gale threatened to blow them away. Frey reacted quickly and managed to stab a dagger into the ground, then another, thus managing to hold on, though there was little else he could do.

"Anyone got a plan to deal with that thing?!" He shouted to be heard over the howling wind. "I don't know about you, but it gives me a very bad feeling!"

Roxana Ma'gonid

"Make that four!" shouted Roxana as she let loose another arrow into the eye socket of one of the swordsman devils. The bestial man's body fell unceremoniously on the floor its crude armor and weapons clanging on the ground. She grabbed another arrow and shot it at the halberdier's ankle forcing it to trip over. Out of all of the remaining foes that one's weapon would be the most dangerous to Syl as her armor could easily protect her from the amateur sword attacks from these pesky devil but its weapon could get a puncture in a lucky strike. She loaded another arrow and finished it off as it let out a quick cry.

"Never mind make that's three to go!" she smugly cried out as the last two swordsmen redoubled their efforts on Sylanna.

The last with a mancatcher however took advantage of his allies last ditch efforts and went right towards her aiming his strange armament towards her neck. She bobbed under it before running towards the devil to slash its throat with her dagger but it slapped her to the ground as itself fell onto the floor clutching its bleeding throat.

Sunken Church Expedition

With Frey's word the black wind slowly seeped out of the open doors across from them before whirling into the shape of a crude wraith with the holes it had for eyes and a mouth glowing in an eerie iridescent green. It spun around in the air before shrieking at the group the moment the winds died down.

"I've bested a wraith before and I'll best again!" shouted Siegfried waving his zweihander at the specter but the wraith lashed out at him with its giant hand sending him tumbling away from the group and a keen eye would notice several flasks dropping away from him as he flew. He slowly got up before patting his waistline to feel around his belt. He grabbed a small clay flask and threw it onto the wraith with its result being the flask exploding into a shimmering spray of slime that erupted into bright orange flames. The wraith spun around the air to avoid more damage as Seigfried hollered out to the group, "Swamp Fire Slug Slime vials! Bought em half price when we where in the city! Excellent for ghosties!"

Sylanna smiled as she heard her friend declare her success in dispatching yet another of the odious fiends that had attacked them as they explore the abyssal ruin. Indeed, before her very eyes, one of the three remaining swordsmen suddenly collapsed with an arrow lodged in its eye socket, briefly stalling the others as they adjusted their positions to make up for their lost ally. Soon enough another devil followed suit, this time the sole remaining halberdier, who was crippled by an arrow and fell to the ground before promptly being executed by another. That left only two swordsmen, who were currently focused solely on her, and the devil with the mancatcher.

Simple enough. The Snow Elf thought as she ducked under the crude blade of one of the devil swordsmen. The other attempted an overhead blow instead, only to find his attack easily blocked by the elven knight's buckler. Pressing her advantage, she pushed back against the blade and shoved the fiend several paces back before turning her attention to the other one. The first swordsman seemed furious at the elf and lashed out at her with another horizontal slash, as if attempting to cut her in half, but the blow was easily repelled by Sylanna's own sword, and once the devil was off-balance, it was a simple enough matter to lunge at his neck before he could regain his footing. After only a moment, the devil's head toppled to the ground.

"Six down, two to go." She spoke proudly, but a sudden yelp immediately drew her attention towards Roxana, who was currently on the ground after being sent there by the devil that wielded the mancatcher. It was clearly in no position to take advantage of this, weaponless and clutching at its neck as it was, but the sole remaining swordsman seemed to spot a prime opportunity and rushed towards the High Elf to deliver the killing blow.

There's no way I'd let you do that! Sylanna thought as she, too, ran towards Roxana with the intention of saving her from the devil's sword. Suddenly, a radiant light flooded the cavern, more akin to that of the sun in its nature than that of the dim white crystals it quickly overwhelmed. The next moment, as the devil raised its sword overhead to bring it down upon Roxana, it suddenly found itself unable to muster the strength to do as intended, and the upper half of its body quickly slid off the lower half and fell to the ground, soon followed by the creature's legs. Enraged by the threat to her friend, the Snow Elf unleashed the full might of her boon, and her burning blade had cut through the devil's armor and flesh like a knife through butter.

Taking a deep breath to calm down, she reined in her power, turning off her boon, and then walked up to the last remaining devil, who was quickly bleeding out on the ground. Raising her sword, she quickly plunged it into the fiend's chest, piercing its heart and ending its misery.

Then, her hand let go of her sword and she quickly dropped to one knee, crouching by Roxana's side. "Are you alright?!" She asked with heartfelt concern.

Roxana Ma'gonid

Roxana was rubbing her cheek when she saw Sylanna mercilessly slay the last two devils and just as quickly turn her attention towards her kneeling down to check on her. Roxana grabbed a hold of Sylanna's shoulder and pulled herself upwards to get on her feet with her face rushing past closely to Sylanna's. If there was one benefit of having an extra tall friend it was using them in situations like this. Roxana dusted herself off before poking her friend's forehead.

"I'm quite alright," said Roxana with a snicker, "Not the first blow from some fiend I've taken."

Roxana would then go around to pluck her arrows from the devil's corpses wiping their tips with a cloth from her belt but once she was counting her arrows something didn't add up. That being the number of corpses as there was exactly one missing. She looks all around but the dim lighting of the ruins made it hard to looks for blood trails on the ground. She summoned out her wisp and had it flow low to the ground and there was the sought after blood trail just behind her.

"Looks like one of these cretins got away with my arrow in them," she said in annoyance, "Not like they could get very far."

The sporadic blots of blood on the floor would lead all across the underground ruins before it lead to a deep depression on the ground. It appeared to be some sinkhole in an abandoned market square and sliding down the edge revealed the sinkhole created a large overhang to another chamber to the ruins. The blood trail lead deeper inside the chamber and it seemed to narrow down into a hallway which appeared to lead to one last chamber of some intricate tomb room but sudden harsh voices prompted Roxana to slam herself against the wall and hide herself from the voices origins.

"You utter fool!" shouted am exceptionally tall armored man grabbing the last injured devil by the throat, "You had your entire band slain by some flimsy elf women?"

The deep and malevolent baritone voice of the armored man echoed through the chamber like some ghastly disease, "How am I supposed to gain my blood back now? Those wolves above ground are too stupid to not bring back fresh female blood without tearing it to pieces." The vampire looked down at the ground as if lost in thought, "First I'm woken up only to find my homeland some ruined wasteland but then you filth get yourselves killed....I'm still far too feeble to make my undead legions. Far too weak..."

The vampire's eyes glowed a sickly green before lifting up his helmet slightly to sink his fangs into the devil's neck quickly draining the horned man of all his blood in seconds. The corpse was then thrown to the ground like discarded fruit peel, "Filthy creature with filthy blood bah."

Sylanna was surprised when her friend forwent any attempt at a reply and simply took her offered hand to hoist herself up. Recoiling as their faces nearly touched, and then again as her forehead was poked, the Snow Elf was nonetheless relieved that Roxana was unharmed. Now without a reason to worry, she stood up and unceremoniously plucked her sword from the fiend on which it lay embedded, flicking her wrist to send its foul blood flying off the blade and then leaning down to wipe off what was left with some loose cloth the devil had worn before its death.

By the time she stood up and turned to look at Roxana, she seemed to have gathered up all of her arrows and was currently looking through the ground with the light of her wisp. Hearing her point out the escape of one of the devils they had dealt with, the elven knight clicked her tongue. Assuming that this group of fiends was part of a larger congregation, then if he managed to get back to them they would likely return in force to try and avenge their fallen comrades, spiteful little creatures that they were. Even if not, the fact that one of them escaped didn't sit well with her - if he recovered he could become a threat to the few people who still remained on Zareen.

Shaking her head, the tall elf followed her partner as she tracked the blood throughout the underground ruins, which led them from the plaza of sorts they were in previously to what appeared to be a ruined marketplace, and down a sinkhole that led into a larger chamber. By this point a deeply unsettling, ominous feeling was beginning to well up within Sylanna, only increasing as the trail of blood guided them towards a hallway that seemed to lead into an underground tomb. A sudden shout frightened her, but whereas Roxana quickly pressed herself against the wall, she was at a loss on what to do.

I'm not nearly as small or lightly armored... She thought. Resigning herself to risk being seen, the Snow Elf instead crouched low and peeked around the corner of the hallway, spotting a tall man in ancient, ornate armor hollering at the runaway devil, who seemed fearful and impotent before him.

More importantly however were the words that the strange man carelessly spouted. He had all but confessed to the kidnappings that had taken place in Zareen, as well as the wolf attacks. Not only that - he also stated that this ruined place was not a devil abode, but in fact his homeland.

What came next, however, made the Snow Elf's blood freeze in her veins. The final words of the creature before taking the devil's life. The sight of the life being drained from the devil until he was nothing but a dry husk. The utter lack of concern or respect for another's life. It all reminded her of the past, of when she had led an army into the bowels of the earth to face a great evil. Images flashed through her mind of scenes that were remarkably similar - the necromancer draining the life of her friends and allies, not through his teeth, but through his fell magic. The necromancer being nourished and rejuvenated by this stolen life force. The necromancer raising undead abominations from the corpses of those who were close to her in life.

Sylanna had never believed herself to be a cowardly person. But as she relived those moments, she felt none of her previous courage, none of the desperate determination that had led her to plunge her blade into the necromancer's chest. Only fear.

Using what little control she had left to back away from the corner as quietly as possible, the knight turned to look at Roxana. Even before she spoke, it was plain to see what was going on in her head - if her expression wasn't clear enough, then her paler than usual complexion would be.

"Roxana, we have to leave. I don't know what this thing is, but he's too powerful for us to take on by ourselves. We have to go back, call for backup!" She whispered into the High Elf's ear with a clear tone of urgency. It was far from honorable, but it was better than losing their lives to that... thing.

As the black wind coalesced into the vague, ethereal shape of a spectral entity, Frey cursed inside his own head. Great, spooky ghost things again, as if the zombie ship wasn't enough. I really don't get paid enough for this shit. He thought. As the winds died down, he swiftly withdrew his daggers from the wooden floor, but the sight of Siegfried, a gold cloak, essentially getting backhanded by a cartoonishly large phantom appendage was hardly the most comforting thing.

"You got this, big guy!" The blond man shouted. If nothing else, he might as well encourage the fearless leader, though realizing that there was little he could do against the wraith - stabbing a ghost was a silly prospect after all - was disappointing to say the least.

But then he saw Siegfried hurl a clay flask at the phantom, which promptly erupted into flames and seemed to, if not damage it, then at least give it pause. The rogue spotted several such flasks on the ground nearby, having fallen off when Siegfried got smacked.

Oh. Well shiver me timbers, there's actually something I can do to help.

Cloaking himself in the shadows of his boon and becoming hidden to material senses, the rogue quickly got to work, picking up the flasks and hastily rushing over to where the phantom hovered, arranging them neatly on the ground underneath before dashing away again. Coming out from his shroud of shadow, he looked the wraith dead in the 'eye', if it could be called that, and unsheathed his estoc.

"If this doesn't work, or if it work too well, it was a pleasure to work with you all!" He told the other legionnaires before firing a bolt at the stack of flasks.

Roxana Ma'gonid

Roxana looked up at her friend dumbfounded at the genuine and raw fear in her normally stoic comrade's face and voice. With her boon and the apparent weakness the vampire had she thought they'd be enough of a match but it was clear they knew too little to actually deal with it. Plus a fight where one half lost their morale before they even began the fight was destined for loss. More than that however she didn't want to be the one who forced their friend to fight when they were clearly panicked.

"Yes, you're right," said Roxana grabbing onto Sylanna's arm to tug at it slightly, "Let's go back to town. We'll wait there while a messenger calls for other high ranking cloaks."

Roxana smiled nervously at Sylanna before starting to head back where they came from. She took care to step quietly to not draw attention and soon enough they where back in the sinkhole that lead to the vampire lair tunnel. She managed to scale up the crumbled slop and fell to her knees with an exaggerated sigh.

"My word that was dreadful," she said with closed eyes, "Maybe Sieg is back from his contract. He would definitely love this sort of challenge."

Sunken Church Expedition

The arranged flasks were struck immediately by the lightning bolt and exploded in orange plumes of flame engulfing the wraith. The entire dark room was awash with light before the wraith was disintegrated to ethereal goo or at least a charred variant of it. Seigfried walked towards Frey and gave him hearty pats on the back while laughing uncontrollably.

"Jolly good show!" cheered Seigfried before pointing his zweihander forward to the double doors at the far end of the church, "Now onward to the coveted silver!"

He jogged towards the door and with his immense might he pulled them open to reveal its treasures. And its treasures were seemingly vast rows of pots in the chamber below. Seigfried stepped downwards and grabbed on by a handle. He popped off the lid and pulled out a preserved scroll of some kind but after some grumbling he placed it back where he found it.

"Nothing too exciting but I bet the University is gonna gobble this all up," said Seigfried walking deeper into the basement chamber only to find a giant, gorgeously ornate mirror with a seductive carving of a hooded woman on top at the very end of the hall. While it was finely crafted the head of the woman was by far the most detailed almost like it was a casting of a face in its sheer excellence at capturing minute facial features while the rest of the frame seemed to be quite dull worn down .His eyes turned downwards to the mirror and the armored man dropped his weapon.

"My my look at that wonderful reflection. I've never seen something capture me so exquisitely," said Seigfried in awe, "It's almost like I can't look away."

He tried turning but his posture remained locked on the mirror, "Well this is a predicament."

Relieved that her friend and ally agreed to retreat from the area for the time being, yet with fear of that ancient evil still gripping her heart, the knight nodded and began trailing behind Roxana, envying the smaller elf's size, her graceful figure and her light footsteps. Sylanna's tall form and lean muscles gave her an advantage when it came to combat, and her heavy armor protected her from spell and steel alike, but all of these things were of little aid when it came to sneaking around or silently retreating from a battle before it began. It was all she could do to step carefully and hope that the sound of her footsteps didn't give away her presence, while also attempting to move as fast as she could afford to. The trek back to the sinkhole was agonizingly slow despite her best efforts, and the climb back up was tense, as the slightest slip could give away their position, but at last they made it back up.

Now that they had managed to put some distance between themselves and that fell being, Sylanna allowed herself a moment to relax, letting out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. Now that a confrontation was less of an immediate concern, however, the weight of her actions began to set in. The cowardice with which she had acted, unbecoming of a warrior of her stature. No one was there to bear witness, of course, no one except Roxana, whose demeanor was too gentle to chastise her about it, but even so... she would know. A stain on her honor was born, even if only she saw it.

"I apologize for my behavior. I should not have been so fearful to face our enemy, but... I didn't know if we could defeat him, and I didn't..." The blonde elf began as she approached Roxana, though she soon trailed off. Didn't want him to hurt you. She thought, but that sentiment was nonsensical when they were both members of the Paean Legion, soldiers who faced constant dangers as much as they were adventurers. Opting not to voice those thoughts, she instead offered her hand to the shorter woman. "Here, let's keep going. If you're tired, I can carry you the rest of the way back."

Seeing the wraith go up in flames and promptly disappear - leaving behind only its charred ethereal remains - Frey breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that their incorporeal threat was done for. A good thing, because he didn't have anything else on hand that he could possibly use to combat a foe of that nature. About to proclaim his victory over the forces of evil, the young rogue instead broke into a coughing fit as Siegfried started patting him on the back a little too violently, his excitement over their triumph clearly clouding his judgment.

"Y-yeah... let's get going." The blond man begrudgingly spoke as he trailed behind the heavily armored gold-cloak, heading for the double doors. Waiting for Siegfried to open them, he was soundly disappointed as the treasure he had been hoping to find turned out to be little more than archaeological nonsense, nothing worth pocketing while no one was looking.

While trying to find a stray ornament, a piece of silver or anything that could make the time he spent getting here worthwhile, Frey heard their fearless leader announce that he was in trouble. Looking in his direction, the former pirate couldn't immediately see anything amiss other than a motionless Siegfried standing in front of a mirror. Puzzled, he approached, waiting for the gold-cloak to move, though it was clear that he couldn't.

"How odd." Frey thought out loud, while idly scooping up a jar from the ground. If what caused him to freeze up was the mirror, then...

"Here goes nothing." He said, and threw the jar at the mirror to see what happened.

"Aww you don't need to apologize," said Roxana when Syl began chastising herself. She took a hold of the hand offered to her and curiously did not let go when she stood up, "It's fine you don't need to carry me. After something like that I'd prefer being occupied with something."

This was a lot more concerning situation than anything she'd thought back in Velathri where everyone else was. Everyone else had to cancel while Dido ditched them to drink herself to death somewhere in this wasteland. She had confidence in Sylanna's skill and might but this ancient evil was certainly out of their current league. Unless of course they came up with some plan to draw out the vampire to the outside!

"Actually, what if we defeat him without actually having to fight him?" she said excitedly tapping her chin, "We won't have to put ourselves in as much danger as open conflict but it still gets the job done."

This plan however would receive a major intrusion as out of the sinkhole came an armored gauntlet digging into the stone and and dirt. In a split second the armored vampire flipped himself over land perfectly on his feet some distance away from them. He slowly turned towards them and nearly keeled over with a boisterous laugh.

"I knew I wasn't delirious when I smelled the scent of elven women!" he yelled nearly keeling over, "Compared to the sludge of devil blood yours should be quite excellent in taste. It might even give me the boost I need to-ARRRRRHHHGGG!"

The vampire slammed his gauntlets to cover his face as an arrow burning with ethereal green energy pierced the eye hole on his helmet skewering the eye and forcing him to scream in agony.

"Fuck you!" barked Roxana readying another arrow into her quiver.

Sunken Church Expedition

The jar hit the mirror right in the center and shattered it to countless shards seemingly breaking Siegfried free of its spell as he stumbled back like a drunkard.

"Blimey what an embarrassment," blurted out Seigfried, "I don't quite believe I've fallen for such a trite trap. Oh the shame!"

While Siegfried could be heard going on a rant about how he used to be much sharper in the old days beyond the giant mirror's broken frame lay a secret room filled to the brim with gold and silver coins clustered in ivory imbued ceramic pots. Tapestries of ancient exquisite silk hung on the walls and there many jewel encrusted scabbards and other items laying all around the room. Finally, there was a replica of the hooded woman statue they had seen earlier in the center of the room but instead of mossy stone was carved entirely out of a shining black obsidian.

After his theatrics had its run Siegfried stepped inside to inspect the treasure room plunging a hand into a pot of gold coins to inspect them, "My word this find is exquisite. The expedition will have to give us a bonus with this finding!"

Despite the tense situation they had gotten themselves in, Sylanna couldn't hold back a small, soft smile at the shorter elf's reply. Despite her often somewhat childish demeanor, Roxana never failed to be kind when it mattered, a quality worthy of appreciation. Trying not to focus on the fact that she remained within the ranger's grasp, the knight instead focused on her words. She seemed to have an idea, one that seemed promising as she claimed that it might save them the trouble of having to confront the fiend directly, and Sylanna listened attentively. If they could deal with it safely, all the better.

The issue was that she didn't get to share her plan before they were interrupted. An ominous feeling shook the Snow Elf and, just a moment after, something jumped out of the sinkhole they had just crawled out from. With dread gripping her heart once more, Sylanna turned around only to behold the armored visage of that foul undead creature, more intelligent than a lowly risen corpse, but no less vile.

The blonde knight froze in place, even as the vampire spoke - she did not hear any of his words, however. It wasn't until she saw him take an ethereal arrow to the face that she snapped out of it and looked back at Roxana. Putting her surprise at her friend's foul words aside, she felt ashamed once more, to react as she had when the smaller woman was so quick to fight back against the threat. Inspired by this courage, she glared at the vampire as she gathered her own, unsheathing her sword and preparing to do battle once more. After this, the fiend would undoubtedly target Roxana, and she had no intention of letting him lay a hand on her, regardless of the cost.

With this in mind, she rushed forward, a powerful aura of sunlight manifesting around her as she tapped into her boon for the strength she needed to fight this foe. In no time, she closed the distance between the vampire and herself, and slashed at him in a horizontal arc.

"Keep heading towards the entrance! I'll buy you some time!" She shouted at Roxana through gritted teeth.

After saving Siegfried from his predicament, Frey found himself deaf to the older man's rambling, ignoring him completely as he stepped forward. Now, he normally would've at least nodded his head or played along in an interest of maintaining a certain cordiality with such a high ranking member of the Legion - who knew when such a contact might come in handy after all - but this time he had a very good reason for ignoring him.

That reason was treasure. Lots and lots of treasure.

After the huge disappointment that was finding the main abode of the sunken church, Frey was more than satisfied to see that secret room and all of its prizes, from rich silks to jewels and precious metals. Walking towards a group of small, matching jeweled scabbard that looked just about the size of his daggers, the rogue picked one up and began examining it, catching the tail end of Siegfried's rant.

"Oh this is a huge bonus alright." He said, discreetly pocketing the thing.

"Fine but don't stay too long. I'll provide cover when I'm there," said Roxana gnashing her teeth as she ran towards the entrance to the ruins.

Meanwhile, the vampire managed to raise up his gauntlets in time take the scorching blow from Sylanna as it left a deep wedge in the armor but not yet breaking it. It hissed in anger backing away and its eyes flashed a haunting green as its own blood manifested outside his armor forming into a long shape before it hardened into a crimson blade all along his arm. He screeched a blood curdling scream as he lunged forward to swipe at Sylanna's torso with his blood sword before using the arm with the damaged gauntlet to form a ball of black mass in the palm before he flicked it into the ground at her feet. It exploded into a large cloud of black-red mist enveloping them both in its suffocating embrace.

Roxana made the last leap to the entrance by hopping over a long fallen column and she twisted around to see the mortal combat between the dreadful vampire and her friend. She scowled and notched another arrow into her quiver before aiming it at the foe. Her wisp spun out of her body and coated her arrow in its ethereal energy before she drew it out as much she could. A bead of sweat dripped down her face as he aimed it right at the vampire.

"Flock Arrow!" she shouted as she let loose the arrow towards the vampire and right before it hit its mark the green energy all around it splintered off into a dozen arrows striking him every which way on his side, "Come on get over here Syl!"

Sunken Church Expedition

Siegfried hmmed incredibly loudly as he saw Frey pick up a jeweled scabbard and the large armored man walked right behind Frey with his hands on his armor's hips. He stared at the exquisitely crafted item before tapping his foot quite repeatedly as he hmmed even louder. He sighed and began wagging his finger at Frey for his pilfering.

"Shame, shame Frey. Lining your pockets with such valuables is a far cry from what a pristine man should do," he said with a sudden pause before speaking out again, "But there's probably more where that came from so I'll overlook it. Back to the surface we go!"

In some time afterwards a second scouting crew from the expedition would arrive and met up with the whole crew in front of the church. Naturally Siegfried got into an argument with them.

"Bloody hell do you mean you thought we were killed! Do you think we're some yellowbellied runofthemill mercenaries? Nay! We're the cream of the crop for the Legion!," rambled on Seigfried at the expedition guards that had arrived, "Regardless we killed the nasty guarding this place so set up camp for the rest of the expedition you ingrate. Harumpf!"

He stomped back to the group of Legionnaires and crossed his arms in frustration, "Well looks like that's that. Bunch of namby pandy curs these expedition heads. Well at least they brought drinks with em. Come one lads join me for a round!"

Twig the giant turtle man simply nodded along.

Sylanna felt some relief as she heard Roxana accept her request to retreat towards the mine's entrance. Her focus, however, remained solely on the enemy in front of her, that foul undead creature that had stirred a profound dread buried deep inside her heart. Thanks to her friend's courage she had managed to find her own, but that did not mean this would be an easy fight. Already the vampire proved nimble enough to block her first attack, his armor able to withstand it far better than that worn by the lowly devils from before. He backed away with an inhuman hiss and a vile light in his eyes, and Sylanna took a step forward to press her advantage, but her body froze in place as she witnessed the vampire use his own blood to create an elongated crimson blade around his arm. She had seen this sort of unholy magic in the past, before joining the Paean Legion, but she was far from used to it.

Despite her being petrified with fear at the sight, the vampire's deafening scream was enough to snap Sylanna out of it, and with a frightened gasp she took a step back as she moved her sword into position to block a swipe of his crimson blade, which would have surely spilled her own blood otherwise. She trusted her armor, of course, it had served well over the years, but she had little reason to think it would withstand that cursed blade's caress. Busy as she was making sure that the crimson sword didn't get anywhere near her, however, she was unable to do anything about the swirling sphere of darkness that he threw at the ground, creating a thick dark fog that obscured her vision and burned her throat and lungs when she breathed it in.

Damn it! Sylanna thought as she struggled to keep up with the vampire's blood blade through the dark fog. She blocked his wild swings once and then twice, but her heels dug into the cavernous ground with each blow in spite of the solar might backing her. The Snow Elf found herself backpedaling as she tried to keep up with her undead foe's onslaught, but the black and red smoke that enveloped her didn't seem to end, irritating her eyes and making it harder and harder to fight. At last a powerful strike sent the knight's sword flying away from her hands, and the flames that surrounded it were quickly extinguished as her wisp's power dissipated.

Sylanna jumped back in an attempt to put as much distance as she could between herself and the vampire now that she was disarmed, finally leaving the dark fog in the process, but her left foot stepped on something that rolled away underneath, making her lose her balance and fall on her bottom. The vampire loomed over her, raising his crimson sword overhead. Dodging was her only hope now, though there was little room to do so.

Suddenly a viridian streak cut through the darkness in the cave before splitting into dozens of glowing needles, all of them prickling the vampire in tandem. Realizing that Roxana had just saved her, the Snow Elf scrambled to her feet. She was still disarmed, but upon looking down she noticed her winged spear, left here after their fight with the devils. Thanking her lucky stars, she picked it up before turning tail and rushing toward the exit with superhuman speed, dodging stone pillars and jumping over large rocks in order to catch up with Roxana.

"First of all, I owe you one. Now, what was your plan? Now's a good moment to set it off." She told the smaller elf.

Roxana Ma'gonid

Roxana weakly smiled in relief as she saw Syl arriving in the nick of time before the vampire recovered from her magical attack. She had put a fair bit of her wisp's energy into so she was worried if she could even get another decent attack soon. For safe measure she still notched another arrow into her quiver.

"My plan is to lure him outside and have the sun burn him up enough. Or at least weaken him enough so we can do him in without dying ourselves. But getting there is the hard part," said Roxana nervously tapping the edge of her mouth before she briskly ran for it deeper into the tunnel, "Come on I'll explain on the way!"

It was most assuredly an awful and stupid plan but it was the best she could come up with right now that didn't involve getting stuck in prolonged melee. Before long they arrived in one of the large expanses of the mining complex in the tunnels with the tunnel they used to get inside just in the distance, "I'm going to go to the cave's entrance and cover it with Methuselah's tarp to block the light coming through. I just need you to buy me enough time to set it up by outmaneuvering him here. When I give a signal just run back up the tunnel and stop right before the tarp. I'll be behind one of the edges in the tunnel and hit with a Ballista Arrow to the back and knock him outside....yeah its pretty farfetched but it should work perfectly with our skills!"

After hearing whatever Sylanna had to say she ran up the tunnel outside before looking over where Methusulah had been left. She graciously apologized to the donkey for leaving him there for so long but she quickly activated her boon and with the speed of wind she unloaded all the stuff on his back before grabbing the tarp on his back and going back to the tunnel. While just behind the entrance she unfurled the tarp and threw it up at the top of the tunnel's entrance before rapid firing her bow to pin the four corners to the wooden support beams. She finally sighed as her boon ran out leaving her exhausted and falling to her knees. Weakly she moved to sit beside a large indentation on the tunnel's side which would leave her in a tight fit outside of the vampire's view with her arrow drawn and sweat dripping down her brow and along her cheek.

Meanwhile the ravenous howls of the vampire could be heard as he burst into the expansive corridor galloping about like an animal on all fours before leaping on last time onto a stone pillar, embedding himself onto it with his blood sword as he looked every which way for his prey, "You foul wenches shall perish in screaming agony for shaming me like that back there! For I am Lord Klaus! Lord of all this land! And I shall make you elven bitches rue the day you came into my tomb!"

Sylanna listened attentively as her comrade unveiled her plan to defeat the vampire lord. It was simple enough - lure him outside and let him burn up in the sunlight - but precisely because of that it would be tricky to execute correctly. Roxana saved the details for after they were some distance away from their enemy, and the elven knight agreed, trailing behind her companion as the two ran out of the small ruin and through the winding tunnels of the mining complex until they wound up at a larger opening near the entrance. It was there that her friend explained the plan in clearer detail, and though it was risky, it sounded like the best shot they had at ending the threat that had fallen upon Zareen recently - which was what they had been hired for after all - and escaping with their lives. Gripping her winged spear, she nodded at Roxana.

"We can do this. Stay safe, I'll wait for your signal." She told her friend before turning back to the tunnels, where the enemy howled and shrieked as he moved in hot pursuit of the two elven women, swiftly catching up to the expanse where the blonde knight waited for him. The revenant leaped onto a stone pillar with the aid of his wicked blood blade and snarled at Sylanna, screaming at the top of his lungs and proclaiming that he, the lord of this land, would punish them for their transgressions. She glared at the creature with a defiant look in her eyes, a stark contrast to the fear before.

"I don't respect your authority or fear your retribution, fiend, and once the day is through, neither will the people of this land!" She shouted back at the vampire before bathing her spear in flames with the power of her wisp's magic. The irony of her statement was not lost on her, but this was no time to think of that. The only thing she knew was that if she were to fail, both she and Roxana would fall prey to this creature, which meant death... or worse. The mere thought of her dearest friend being at the mercy of this abomination filled her mind with anger - she had to ensure that it did not come to pass.

"Bold words for a coward, golden haired harlot! Did you think I could not smell the sweet scent of fear emanating from you like smoke from a blaze?" The vampire said with a smug grin on his face, his words causing Sylanna's eyes to widen, though she said nothing and simply gritted her teeth. The fiend jumped down from the pillar and slowly walked towards her. "There is nothing like the delicious scent of elven women fearing for their lives as I feast on their sweet blood. You reminded me of when I used to hunt your kind down in these lands centuries ago." He said with a sickly laugh. "The vulgar wenches that live here today are nothing in comparison, but with you here, I can have a good meal at last."

Sylanna's glare intensified as she continued to wait for the foul creature to approach, trying to ignore his words. But at last, she failed.

"I think I'll start with you. The short bitch looks like she would make for a good dessert."

"Silence you bastard!" The blonde elf shouted as she charged forward, thrusting at the vampire with her spear. With a flick of his wrist, he deflected the attack with his scarlet blade, but that was exactly what Sylanna wanted. Already her wisp had left her body to hover in front of her, releasing a concentrated burst of solar flames upon the vampire, who could not block it in time. A blood curdling scream caused the walls of the cavern to rumble as the undead creature staggered back several paces, the scent of burning rotten flesh filling the air.

As soon a her stratagem paid off, Sylanna backed away until she was just in front of a rocky mound by a tunnel. She doubted she would be able to overcome a powerful foe like this on her own, but as Roxana said, all she had to do was win her some time until she could set up the trap. In order to do that, her best bet was to keep the vampire on his toes and, more importantly, keep him infuriated so that he could not think clearly and use his cunning in addition to his power. So far, it seemed like she was doing just fine on that end.

"I'LL KILL YOU! I'LL STRANGLE YOU WITH YOUR OWN ENTRAILS AND THEN PUT YOU ON A PIKE!" The fiend roared as he rushed towards Sylanna, raising his blood blade for an overhead slash, but Sylanna stepped aside at the very last moment, causing him to smash the pile of rocks instead. The stones were ground into fine dust, and the cloud of dirt that was created as a result choked and blinded him.

Not sparing a single moment to add insult to injury, the Snow Elf positioned herself behind the vampire and kicked him in the bottom as he keeled over, causing him to fall onto the ground face-first. Once more she retreated after that, observing him keenly and paying attention to her surroundings to see what else she could use to her advantage. And once more, there was a horrid scream that shook the very foundations of the mountain the mine was built into, except this time there was no pain in it. It was a scream of pure, unfettered rage, and as it caused the caves to shake violently, the vampire's very form began to ripple. A dark red shadow seemed to envelop him, great wings of darkness growing out of his back.

"I HAVE TOYED WITH YOU ENOUGH, ELVES. FOR YOUR TRANSGRESSIONS, I, LORD KLAUS, SENTENCE YOU TO AN ETERNITY OF SUFFERING."

The voice was decidedly demonic, nary a trace of humanity left in it, and for a moment Sylanna's heart was filled with utter dread. What sort of creature was this, that it fed on the blood of the living and could harness such dark powers? But now was not the time to lose heart. A glance at the tunnel's entrance let her know that Roxana was almost done setting the tarp - she just had to survive a little longer.

"That's only if you can defeat me!" She shouted defiantly, kicking a nearby mining cart at Klaus with all of her strength. But the shadow simply rose from the ground and began crawling across the ceiling towards her location, great claws of blood and darkness swiping at her with astounding speed. It was all she could do to block his strikes with the shaft of her spear, made of metal instead of wood precisely for such a purpose. But with each strike, the metal began to bend until it finally shattered, the winged spear split into two, leaving her defenseless.

Just then, Sylanna heard a whistle, signaling that the trap was set up. Acting quickly, she released her wisp to blast at Klaus with a spirit spitfire once more. It left Solskin utterly spent and bought her only a second, but that was all she needed. The Snow Elf ran as fast as she could towards the entrance, with the vampiric shadow in hot pursuit. Now all she could do was pray that Roxana would not fail her shot.

Roxana Ma'gonid

Once Sylanna was at the entrance and the vampire was leaping at her Roxana threw herself out of the corner she was hidden in and drew her bow with her last remaining might. She amassed all her wisp's energy around her arrow and spiraled it around the wooden shaft before releasing the amassed energy infused string.

"Ballista Arrow!," shouted Roxana as she slammed into the opposite wall of the tunnel sliding down with a grunt.

The arrow, with an aura around the size of a man's thigh, slammed into the vampire's back vaulting him off his feet and into the outside. His armored body's trajectory ripped off the tarp Roxana had set up exposing him to the harsh rays of the wasteland before them. Still the sheer energy of the arrow launched two bodylengths into the air or so before falling downwards and hitting the rocky ground. He slowly raised himself up with bloodsword but he stood agape at the sight before him.

"What? Where is this?," said Klaus as he fell down to his knees oblivious that his blood sword arm was beginning to disintegrate to ash, "No its all gone..." As his eyesockets burst into flames he raised himself to his feet to ran back towards Roxana who was leaning at the side of the mine's entrance but he barely made it a few steps before the hole in the back of his cuirass burst into flames and ash as well. In only a matter of seconds the ancient vampire had perished to a pile of ash filled armor.

"We did it...we actually did it!," cheered Roxana before she nearly caught her self tripping over. She swung herself back into the cool shade of the mine's entrance before sliding down to sit, "We can collect a sample of his ashes, his armor, and go back to town later. For now my word I'm tired."

Her donkey Methusulah absentmindedly as always walked towards her where his mane could be petted. After softly petting his mane she limply tried to reach for the flask of water attached to his harness before taking a huge sip. After she had her fill she huffed out quietly in exhaustion before offering to Syl, "Good job there...Mithra my lungs hurt."
