Ravenloft (D&D Gothic Horror/Fantasy OOC)

Postby Morrdh » Fri Oct 19, 2018 9:08 pm

Beyond mortal senses, beyond your reality, there lurks a boundless plane. It permeates your world and fills the void between worlds. It is the border between the lands of the living and of the dead. There, mind and matter become one; thought and passion, fear and yearning can become more tangible than iron. It is the Ethereal Plane.

Somewhere, lurking deep within those ethereal mists, a dark and nameless dimension is ruled by dark and nameless powers. Some say it is a prison for the damned; some say it is a crucible to test the virtuous. Others simply call it home. It is a land of mist and shadow, love and death, sacrifice and seduction, beauty and horror. It is a land of whispered fears made manifest. It is the Realm of Dread.

Perhaps you have sensed its touch. At the bidding of the Dark Powers, tendrils of the ethereal Mists that bind this land reach out to caress the Material Plane. They stroke the skin at the back of your neck when a creaking floorboard warns that you are not alone in the dark. Their invisible fingers crawl down your spine when inhuman shadows rustle at the edges of your vision.

The Mists do more than merely caress. The Dark Powers are drawn to innocence and villainy, to loathing and desire, to obsession, and to despair. They seek out squandered dreams and inner demons. They savor the decay of the spirit. Their Mists snatch up fiends at the moment of their ruin and steal upon heroes in times of doubt.

To what end do the Dark Powers add these souls to their tarnished collection? To torment them? To purify them? None can say, for few souls drawn into the Realm of Dread ever leave to tell the tale. Yet perhaps you will soon learn for yourself, for tonight, the Mists have come for you.

Welcome to the Land of Mists. Welcome to the crucible of virtue and the spoils of damnation.

Welcome to the Realm of Dread.

Welcome to Ravenloft.

Ravenloft is a world unlike other worlds. It is a construct, an artificial pocket realm endlessly prowling the trackless Ethereal Plane. The implacable Dark Powers crafted their realm from the hidden fears of the innumerable worlds of the Material Plane, and shape reality to reflect their sinister sensibilities.

The so-called 'Mists of Ravenloft' are notable for having a life of their, either forming borders to isolated domains or leading travelers astray to realms far from their intended destination. From time-to-time the Mists extend their tendrils into any world with ties to the Ethereal Plane and snatch individuals from those worlds, stragglers whom the insular folk of Ravenloft call 'outlanders'.

You are one such outlander.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Welcome to my crack at the classic D&D setting Ravenloft, a setting focused on the Gothic Horror tropes of vampires, werewolves and other things that go bump in the night. The idea is that those who take part will play typical fantasy characters who find themselves being taken from their own worlds by the Mists and dumped in the world of Ravenloft. Their goal will be to survive and then, eventually, find a way to return home.

But the Mists and the Realm of Dread aren't things to be trifled with.

Usual RP rules apply, accepting characters based on the atypical D&D races (human, elf, half-elf, dwarf, gnome, halfling, half-orc) and classes (barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, wizard). Depending on how popular the idea is, I'm considering using dice to help resolve actions.

Tag, get ready for a werewolf nerd girl who always does the most.

Edit: My bad, I didn't know that it wasn't a playable species.

Also, Frog God Games materials?

No, only what would be considered 'core' for D&D.

To confirm: this is technically not D&D, right?
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.
But seriously, aside from the population and GDP, just assume that my NS stats are roughly accurate.

Opponents to be defeated, but not necessary by combat.

Zjaum wrote:To confirm: this is technically not D&D, right?

Ravenloft is a D&D setting and the setting source material I'm using will be the 3rd Edition/3.5 Ed books, but it won't be the actual D&D game if that makes sense.

Prefer to stick with what I know and have access to rather than needing to acquire more material.

Cainesland wrote:Would you like us to add stats to the applications? Are feats ok?

At the moment, I have to say no.

I'd like to use dice if everyone is up for the idea, but (having played in and run D&D games) I'd like to use a different system which I think would be better suited.

All right, then! Promised a friend that I wouldn't play D&D for a while, but she never mentioned forums! Naturally, I'm down for dice or whatever you have in mind.

I'm putting down multiple. If there's a character limit, then the preference runs from most preferred at the top to least preferred at the bottom. If you like one of the characters in particular, either you can use him/her or I can just play that one, regardless of preference. I used the same RP sample for each, if you don't mind.

Name: Laglelaine Inyanorsa
Age: 100
Race: Elf
Class: Barbarian
Appearance:
Image
Bio/Background: Laglelaine wanted to be an industrialist. She really did. She was fascinated by the cogs and machinery made by the humans and dwarves, and she wanted nothing more than to bring the great factories of the outside world to her people. But no, her family had to be one of the most powerful magic-using dynasties in all the land! She was expected to be a legend for her ability to manipulate the arcane. She showed promise, without a doubt, but she rejected most of her studies and ran away as a child (at 75). The next few years were spent in the wild. She had neither the capital nor the willpower to enact her dreams, and so she spent her days in a self-built hut in the wilderness. She decided one day that this was clearly not beneficial to her mental health and decided that adventuring would reintegrate her quite nicely to the rest of the world.
RP Example: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?p=33632379#p33632379

Name: Haapsalu Argyrix (a reoccurring character of mine)
Age: 100
Race: Dwarf
Class: Wizard
Appearance:
Image
Bio/Background: Haapsalu grew up in a land where magic was frowned upon. His people believed that magic had a limit to its usefulness, while industry could provide much more to the people in the long run. It is a belief that Haapsalu still believes to this day. However, while traveling abroad, he began learning basic powers. He returned to his family with the proposition that magic, when infused with industry, could result in a much more efficient economy. His family approved, but his king would have none of it. The monarch banished the young noble, and Haapsalu vowed to put his business plan to action someday. That is, if he can acquire enough gold.
RP Example: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?p=33632379#p33632379

Name: Werekoya Eyeketrau
Age: 20
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Rogue
Appearance:
Image
Bio/Background: Werakoya was cast out from her family at a very early age. She grew up with the life of an orphan in a human settlement and was hired by the local band of thieves. You see, she was desperate for a means to keep her large stomach full, and they were desperate for someone with enough strength to break the tough locks. Everyone involved quickly learned, however, that Werakoya was not cut out for the life of a rogue. No matter how many tricks of the trade they taught her, she was always too clumsy and too... well, big to remain unseen. The only reason why she stayed on so long was because the more experienced rogues sacrificed their freedom to get the guards off her tail and keep their strong-woman active. Thus she led to the capture and dissolution of the entire guild, finally banished from the city in which she grew up. With nothing left, she enters the world of adventuring.

It'll be one character per person, so it'll only one out of the selection you posted.

The Dwarf interests me the most out of all three.

What's the criteria for starting IC again? Number of characters, or time allotment?

Waiting until there is at least 4 characters, one's been approved and another is WIP.

So another...two, maybe three characters and I'll start the IC.

Though I'll prod a few other people I know are interested.

Definitely interested in this if it's still active.
I believe that madness can find more madness, and that every ounce of madness has a spark of truth. And truth, as you know, has a way of depressing people who don't want to find it.

No one is 100% honest... We all keep 20% of the truth from the world, to protect ourselves & sometimes others.
