NationStates Name: Lendenburgh
Nation Name: Duchy of Provence
Capital: Marseille
Government Type: Feudal
Head of Government: Duke Ramirus I
Dynasty/Family Name: de Genève
Population: 225,000
Eligible Military Population: (as in adult males? then probably 55,000) Reasonably, 12,000
Territorial Claims: The area around Lake Geneva, to the north of Provence, which is the ancestral home of the Duke.
State Religion: Catholicism
Dominant Religion: Catholicism
Minority religions: Heretical branches of Catholicism, with some Judaism due to the diaspora
Religious Information: Resting along the Mediterranean, the port of Marseille brings people of all faiths, but the duchy remains a strong bastion of Christianity deep within Catholic Europe with loyalties to the Pope and to the church as a whole, which is unlikely to change any time soon.
Economy Information: The port of Marseille is very prosperous, bringing merchants from far-away. The duchy has the unique position of being at the crossroads between the dukes and counts of Italy, and the Kingdom of France, and therefore rests on an important trading corridor. Additionally, Provence is host to lavender fields for the making of luxury goods and has a large amount of arable land.
Military Information: The people of Provence are not inclined to war by nature, but are open to expansion and will follow their leader into battle if necessary. The personal domain of the duke is quite large, due to the recency of his conquests, and therefore, the duke has many men to call upon if faced with war.
History: After Charlemagne's rule, the Duchy of Provence was largely considered a part of the Holy Roman Empire, however, the dukes of the region have always had a great deal of autonomy in their ruling. The Bosonid Dynasty was the first to lay claim to the county of Provence after the crumbling successor Kingdoms of the Carolingian Empire collapsed. However, after the rule of Count Boson in 965, the province was thrown into chaos for the next 50 years due to the lack of a successor, leaving the realm to disintegrate into shattered regionalities, ruled mostly by barons in castles. The youngest son of the count of Genève, Ramirus, took the opportunity to ride South in 1008 and take the throne from the Provencal rulers. Conquering castle by castle from the North towards the coast, his reign has been met by some resistance, but the young ruler made concessions to the Provencal people to keep them appeased and seems to be more Provencal than Helvetican in his nature. Through a five year conquest, the young ruler finally galvanized power in the region, and is considered the Duke of Provence. He now seeks to vassalize his family's homelands and expand the borders of his duchy even further.

Ruler's Name: Ramirus de Genève
Ruler's: Age: 28
Ruler's Personality: Ambitious, but perhaps overconfident. The young ruler lacks heavily in experience, but makes up for it as best he can with his gregarious nature and knack for command.
Physical Appearance:
Image

Ruler's Family Information: Count Montreux of Genève is his eldest brother, whom he holds a grudge against, believing he should have inherited the title instead. He has another brother, older than him, and two younger sisters as well. The duke has yet to find a wife that he considers suitable, and does not have any children.
Ruler's History: Ramirus was born to a noble family that did not have the highest ambitions, something which he did not quite enjoy. His father only had eyes or time for his eldest brother, who was trained to lead the county from a young age. Even his other brother, Abel, did not pay Ramirus much attention, instead focusing on the scholarly. Ramirus quickly grew tired of constantly being looked over, and so turned to military pursuits and the court to pass the time. He became good friends with many soldiers, to the point where he was eventually able to assemble a party large enough to begin his campaign southward. He has a natural talent for diplomatic pursuits and the commanding of an army, but is exceedingly trusting and blindly confident in himself. His hubris might well be his downfall.

Anything I should know about you player wise?: Just that I'm eager to start the RP!

(Note: If it is a problem having his family control Geneva, that can be edited, it was mostly for flavor and is not all that important. Just let me know!)

NationStates Name: Ralioskener
Nation Name: The Margraviate of Tuscany
Capital: Florence
Government Type: Feudal
Head of Government:
Dynasty/Family Name: Von Lichtenstein
Population: ~350,000
Eligible Military Population: 20,000
Territory: Labeled as the Marquisate of Tuscany, in orange
Image

Territorial Claims: Duchy of Spoleto
State Religion: Roman Catholicism
Dominant Religion: Roman Catholicism
Minority Religions: Islam, along with small Christian heresies
Economy Information: Tuscany is extremely well known for holding a large amount of vineyards, and thus wine. The region is also known for it's olive oil, and usually trades these with the Italian republics for a substantial profit.
Military Information: Tuscany, being a state near the border of the Holy Roman Empire, was a march or margrave, and therefore was given a greater amount of military power in the form of fortifications and men, much like other marches. This had the effect of granting the region more political power as well, due to the exposed borders requiring the marches to be granted more politico-military autonomy of action than other states in the Empire. Due to this, Tuscany holds significant influence on it's Italian neighbors, most especially the Duchy of Spoleto, and is also the frontline of defense in the case of an invasion of the Empire through Italy.
History: In 846, the title of the margrave of Tuscany was granted to Adalbert I. Tuscany was ruled by the Bonifacii until 931, when Hugh of Arles, the King of Italy removed them from power in order to appoint the illegitimate Boso instead. The Bosonids ended with the death of Hugh the Great. Hugh had briefly ruled over both Tuscany and the Duchy of Spoleto, the latter of which he ruled from 989 to 996. Hugh's reign experienced a "spiritual revival" as public lands were given to monasteries and churches. However, upon his death in 1001 the margrave collapsed, and a new ruler was needed for Tuscany.

This came in the form of the Swiss-descended Von Lichtenstein family in 1004. They had ruled as petty nobles in Swiss counties, before selling their land in the Alps and moving down to Italy for a more substantial profit in the trade of the Mediterranean. Fortunately their gamble paid off, and they managed to rise in power inside the counties that arose after the collapse of the Tuscan state in 1001. Taking control of Lucca, they quickly consolidated their power over the weak former territories, following Hugh the Great's decision to make Florence the capital instead of Lucca. Now controlling two of the most important counties in the region, the Magrave title was granted to Joachim Von Lichtenstein in 1004, and Pisa surrendered to the new ruling family under threat from the Emperor.

Joachim's designated his son Anton as his heir, due to his cousin Artur refusing the throne, and was succeeded in 1015. The Swiss family now seeks to blend in with their Italian subjects and adopt their culture, while maintaining a healthy income of wealth for the realm by using the maritime trade in the Mediterranean to their advantage.

Ruler's Name: Anton Von Lichtenstein
Ruler's Age: 34
Ruler's Personality: Temperate and well-spoken, Anton is well-suited to his life of rulership, though can find it overwhelming sometimes. His rulership is not very grandiose or fantastical, and most of his brighter ideas come from his 51 year old uncle, who is well-versed in the art of war and diplomacy.
Physical Appearance: Anton is a stout, but not necessarily fat, man, with a neutral but lively face at most times. His black hair is cut quite short and neatly sits atop his chubby head. At average height, Anton is an imposing figure on horseback, though this is not necessarily true when the Margrave is on his feet.
Ruler's Family Information: Artur Von Lichtenstein - Anton's uncle. Their relationship is warm, as Artur is the mentor for Anton's son Elias. Artur is a fan of humour, and believes that laughing is the best reaction a person could have. However, he is also well-versed in history and warfare strategy, serving as the realm's marshal, though his proneness to physical illness limits his capabilities somewhat. He serves as the de facto ruler of Tuscany, usually the mastermind behind family matters and affairs of state, greatly assisting his nephew in his rule.

Elias Von Lichtenstein - Anton's 14 year old son. Similar in appearance to his father, but shorter and with fairer skin. His mother was a French noblewoman, who disappeared one day in 1016. Ever since then, Elias has plotted to search through all of Europe to be united with his mother. Mature and skilled at a young age, Elias has also gained skills and his love of humour from his mentor and kinsman Artur, whom he calls grandfather.
Ruler's History: Anton was born in 984 to Joachim Von Lichtenstein and his wife Anna, a courtier. His parents treated him kindly, and he grew up in his family's home in the cold mountainous region of Switzerland. In 1001 his family sold all their Swiss lands, and ventured to Italy to found a new life there. Over the years he ran errands for his father, and learned about politics, especially those of the Holy Roman Empire. He also learned how to trade and went on numerous trips at sea, in hopes that he would continue his father's dream of a rich Tuscan trade network across the Mediterranean. Joachim finally kicked the bucket in 1015, and thus Anton Von Lichtenstein ascended to the throne of Tuscany.

Hey if the princess is willing to visit Sicily I'm sure she'll be very welcome. Would help facilitate trade, especially since we have a lot of grain we can sell.

Ironically,

Historically Basil II had planned to invade and reconquer Sicily but died before he could. Granted at the time it was also under Muslim control

Doubt they'd be able to help, even. Striking at the southern mainland isn't going to help the island, after all. And they wouldn't even be able to get to the island, given how the Byzantines have basically one of the largest standing navies in our world.
