Name: Mircella Mellowmoon
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Appearance: Here
Statistics:
Strength: 2 - Average
You can do anything a regular person can, which includes breaking noses and using weapons. Unremarkable.
Agility: 3 - Athletic
You can probably outrun the other village kids, and climbing up huts and trees isn't hard. Still nothing noteworthy, though.
Endurance: 1 - Frail
You've won the genetic lottery: you can't take a punch and a cold just might kill you.
Magical Prowess: 6 - Heroic
You've got magic for days. Forget fireballs: fire walls, fire pillars, fire storms even. Or if fire's not your speed, you could try enchanting that staff to shoot lightning, it should be easy for you. Teleportation's easy, you could even bring friends along and it'd be fine.
Bio: For generations, the Mellowmoons of An'Zarok have long been among the most devout followers of the Laughing Wolf in all of Requiem. Said to be as close to the Voice in the Dark as the sun is to the night during an eclipse, the family has often held positions of power both within the Children of the Laughing Wolf and within the city; Marceni Mellowmoon, former head of the family, functioned as King of An'Zarok for fifty days before being unable to answer a riddle from the head of a competing family, for example, and many women of their clan have received the title of High Priestess, including Ornella Mellowmoon, Mircella's mother.

Said to be the offspring of Ornella and one of the sacred Alderbeasts that occasionally manifest in the Rosen Vale and its surroundings, Mircella was born with hair white as snow, a color symbolizing death in Zarokin culture, and a stark contrast with her mother's fiery red. Whether she was really the offspring of one of the elusive psychopomps in the service of the Laughing Wolf, the product of Ornella's husband or simply the result of an affair, a practice relatively common in An'Zarok, the truth was never found out, and Mircella was raised the same as her sisters. Along with receiving education befitting of the aristocracy of a prosperous state, the girl was initiated in the worship of the Lord Under the Vale, as well as the rites and customs of An'Zarok and some considerations about the wider world.

As it is customary that a man or woman of any race should learn first-hand about the pleasures of life before entering service to the Laughing Wolf, Mircella was unable to begin the process to become a priestess until she was 16, after she had taken her first man. Through the guidance of her mother the High Priestess, as well as her own natural aptitude, she swiftly passed her trials and officially became a Priestess of the Laughing Wolf, specializing not in religious services and ceremonies, but in the practice and cultivation of abyssal magic; she took to that power like a moth to the flame as soon as it was unlocked for her, and quickly learned how to control it and bend it to her will, far outpacing other young priests and priestesses who were beginning their service to the King of the Roses.

This power was soon put to good use, as Mircella would wander through the Flowering City and its surroundings to heal the sick, the wounded and the ailing, displaying an uncanny ability to sense and track down those who were nearing death and subsequently saving them with the power of the Laughing Wolf. Before long she became famous, even among all the talented healers that could be found within the walls of An'Zarok, and started traveling all over the Rosen Vale to save others, using her own abyssal magic to protect herself from the occasional aggressor.

Mircella has continued to live in Rosen Vale as a priestess of the Laughing Wolf, but recently, she has begun to feel a yearning to see the wider world, and awaits an opportunity to leave An'Zarok and the Vale.
Heroic Boon: Soul of Night - Mircella's boon harnesses her connection with darkness to allow her to greatly empower a person or creature of her choosing by temporarily imbuing them with powerful abyssal energies. This increases the target's speed, strength and endurance, and also allows them minor control over the energies enhancing them. However, it is only temporary and Mir must rest between uses.
Abilities:
  • [Abyssal Magic]: Mircella's main means of attack, defense and support alike is her domain of abyssal magic, the manipulation of the power bestowed upon the faithful by the Laughing Wolf himself. Abyssal magic involves the manipulation of a unique form of darkness, the summoning of entities from beyond the material plane, and the alteration of the psyche and soul of other beings.
    • Attack Spells - The attack spells available to Mircella consist primarily of using darkness to form various weapons, projectiles and energy attacks, summoning abyssal tendrils and other lesser creatures, and weaving various curses and afflictions.
    • Defense Spells - Mircella has a fairly limited repertoire of defensive spells, limited to creating shields and barriers around herself and others, and binding herself to other living creatures in order to transfer harm done upon her to them.
    • Support Spells - Support spells, along with attack spells, are the area where abyssal magic truly shines, and Mircella can use a great variety of them, ranging from spells that use darkness and abyssal summons to heal, to spells that can strengthen a person's soul or send whispers to others' minds. Of note is that healing always comes with a price, be it pain, weakness or certain afflictions, albeit always temporary; in return, abyssal healing magic is incredibly potent.
    • Transformation Spells - Of special note are spells that allow priests and priestesses to take the very essence of the Laughing Wolf into themselves, temporarily altering and enhancing their very being in various ways. Mircella only knows of two: the first enhances both her agility and her ability to cast spells, while the other actually hampers her spellcasting ability, but makes up for it by enhancing her strength and allowing her to directly call upon beings of the abyss without mediation. Both are very draining.
  • [Death's Guidance]: An uncanny ability that may or may not point to a supernatural heritage is Mircella's capacity to detect those who are dying or otherwise nearing death's doorstep somewhere nearby and track them down. Whether she can change this situation or not varies.
  • [Zarokin Charm]: Mircella boasts a natural charm, further accentuated by a life spent in An'Zarok, which allows her to earn the trust and appreciation of others and persuade them with significantly more ease than most people. In addition, she has a certain guile that allows her to manipulate social situations to her advantage; to her, lies can come as easily as smiles.
  • [Aristocratic Education]: Hailing from a rich family, Mircella received a well rounded out education involving religious and artistic studies, some general notions on science, and some administrative matters, as well as a great deal of learning about culture both within the Rosen Vale and abroad. While much of this is likely not of use in combat, Mircella is still a fairly cultured individual for her time.

Limitations:
  • As can be noted in her statistics, her main asset is magic, and she is very frail physically. In addition, she has nearly no combat training; her stiletto is a last resort weapon, and she only knows enough to use it without hurting herself.
  • As mentioned before, Mircella's healing abilities generally have a cost, and though it isn't permanent, it makes all but a few of them rather dangerous to use in the midst of combat.
  • Abyssal magic requires both concentration and a casting process. If she is gagged, or going through intense pain, pleasure or some other sensation, then she will be unable to use her spells. In addition, needing a casting process means that her spells can't be used instantly.
  • The Laughing Wolf is a fairly lenient patron; however, even then, if she were to renege the Voice in the Dark or directly challenge one of the basic tenets of his followers, she would be stripped of her power.

Equipment:
  • [Zarokin Priestess Robes]
  • [Ceremonial Alder Staff]
  • [Stiletto]
  • [Assorted Jewelry]
  • [Coin Pouch]

Name: Tira formerly the Black Raven of the 8th order of Kal(Currently going by the name Annabelle)
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Race:
Appearance: Tira
Statistics:
Strength: 3
Agility: 5
Endurance: 3
Magical Prowess: 3
Bio: Travel to anywhere there are people in Tevar and they will likely be able to tell you some version of the tale of the Black Raven. Though recent, the accolades of Tira the Black Raven have shaken the very core of the nation. Before she was a living legend, Tira was merely a young girl living in the capital city of the former nation of Dulo, named Annabelle. She was the only child of the royal blacksmith and grew up idolizing the royal knights of Dulo. Living in the palace Annabelle would often sit in her fathers tower and watched the knights train, fantasizing about one day being a knight herself. Her father often discouraged these dreams, knowing them to be unrealistic and wanting Annabelle to group up to be a blacksmith like him. As she got older she eventually came to accept this and trained with her father to become a smith, though her dream never really left the back of her mind. Annabelle's life continued on in a peaceful and kind way, until one day the Captain of the Royal Guard came to her father with an unusual request.

The guard captain was a man of great power but there were disturbing rumors floating around about his affinity for occult power. These rumors were confirmed when he came to the blacksmith wielding an ancient text that described the steps to create a most foul and evil weapon. This weapon was a sword that could absorb the blood of its victims and store it as powerful magical energy. Utterly repulsed by this request, Annabelle's father refused until the guard captain threatened his daughter's life. Forced to work on this blade for months on end, the blacksmith finally finished the task, with the help of his daughter. Hoping to be free of this nightmare situation, he delivered the blade but rather than leave them alone as promised the guard captain sadistically decided to test out the blade on its creator. Stabbed in front of Annabelle herself, the father died and his blood was absorbed into the devilish blade. Annabelle's cries were horrific and unending and the fallen knight was about to silence her as well when suddenly the gates of the palace fell and the entire city began to fall to anarchy. The kingdom of Tevar had invaded and thoroughly captured the capital of Dulo. Annabelle used this commotion and her rage, to attack the guard captain while his guard was down. Suddenly black flames sparkled from her finger tips and began to engulf wooden objects around her. The guard fell from his feet, utter panic taking over his sentence. He began to beg for mercy but as the young girl considered his plea he picked up his weapon to kill her. In self defense Annabelle grabbed it and stabbed him through the stomach, taking her first life and saving her own in the process.

Soon she was found, covered in blood, by the Tevarian army and held for murder. However after talking to her and other witnesses they soon realized it was self defense and released her. The traumatized young girl was put in the care of Dauton, a young member of Kal. He wore a shiny suit of red armor that didn't appear stained by battle. He had a charming smile that comforted the traumatized child. She started to ask many question about Tevar, eventually getting Dauton to tell her about the Kal. She became enchanted with his stories and at the end of their few days together during the occupation, she begged the warrior to take her with him. He tried to explain that no outsider or woman had ever been a Kal, but she persisted none the less. The Kal were about to leave when suddenly Annabelle was brought before Dauton's commander. He was Guawn, the commander of the 4th circle of the Kal. He had heard the rumors of what Annabelle had done the night of her father's murder, and demanded to know if it were true. She told him the truth, despite how scared she was, and the powerful bearded looking warrior bent down to eye level with her and told her that the magic she preformed was an ancient skill known only to his people after much training. He declared that her ability to wield the black fire could only be a sign of Kalrah himself.

Guawn then offered Annabelle the opportunity to leave her home and train to become a Kal. He warned her that the training would require more from her than most humans were willing to give, but the young girl seemed undaunted. She wanted to create a world where no evil knights prayed on the weak and helpless and she could only do that if she herself were strong. Traveling back to Tevar with Dauton, the young 12 year old Annabelle began her life as a warrior.

Stripped of her name and granted the Tevarian name Tira, the prospective warrior entered the 1st circle of the Kal. There ten circles in all and each one represented rank and order of the Kal. At the 10th circle alone stood the Kalkahra, and beneath him stood the honorable council of the 9th circle that served as their leaders advisers and tasked with choosing his successor. The 1st circle was obviously for novices, who were not even considered full members of the Kal. Tira's entrance into the 1st circle was incredibly controversial. The current Kalkahra, Navor, had faced fierce resistance at the notion of an outsider, let alone a female joining their ranks. However Tira, under the guidance of her assigned mentor Dauton, rose up the ranks so quickly that there was barely time to argue at all. After two short years of brutal training, Tira had already reached the 4th circle where Guawn presided. Guawn declared that Tira would not pass his circle until she defeated him in single combat. Still unable to control her magic, Tira was savagely defeated by Guawn time and time again. Refusing to surrender Tira challenged him over and over until Dauton had to stop her for fear she would get herself killed. Dauton convinced her to have patience and taught her what he knew about Guawn to defeat him. After six months she finally defeated Guawn and advanced to the fifth circle, where there were a growing number of eyes on her development. Some saw her as the natural successor for Kal, while others feared her outsider status and the sometimes uncontrollable rage that seemed to be within her.

As Tira got older however her rage dulled slightly as she became more confident and comfortable in her new home. By the time she was sixteen she was a member of the 6th circle and had an ever growing group of friends and followers among the Kal. As she traveled across the region on missions for the Kal her fame within the whole of Tevar grew as well. By eighteen years old Tira had reached the 8th circle, but it is there she stayed for three years. It became clear the Kalkahra and the council were unsure what to do with her, as she received neither a promotion to the council nor a leadership position. This frustrated the warrior prodigy, and her anger only grew as time past. On her 21st birthday she stormed into a meeting of the council and demanded to know their intentions for her. This behavior was extremely forbidden within the socially rigged and discipline Kal and they ordered the guards to arrest her. When they hesitated others were brought in but they were met with a wave of Tira's supporters who included her now lover Dauton.

Tira spoke before an energetic crowd, declaring that the Kalkahra and the council were afraid of her because she was a woman and an outsider but she herself was chosen by Kalrah to lead them. From here erupted an all out civil war that would tear at the very fabric of the Kal itself. Tira the Black Raven was pitted against the Kalkahra and the council and the legions of warriors that remained loyal to them, while leading a faction of her own that consisted of younger Kal who saw her as a prophet.

This bloody conflict lasted for a year, and Tira's resolve for victory led her to cut down every man who stood in her way, culminating in her leader who she ruthlessly struck down in single combat. After declaring victory over the previous Kalkahra, Tira was begrudgingly declared his successor by the council and thus was bathed in the holy flames of Kalrah as was tradition. However, her coronation did not go as planned and as her former mentor and great friend Guawn prepared to hand off to her the sacred sword as she had asked of him, he instead stabbed her with a hidden blade. Apologizing for the monster he allowed her to become, Guawn just missed killing her before he was apprehended. His words shocked the Black Raven to her core, and as she watched Dauton strike down his former commander with neither hesitation nor mercy, she realized what she had become.

Refusing to touch her new blade, she stormed out of the ceremony and quickly exited the capital city on horseback. Though the Kal pursued her she escaped their grasp. For the last year they have searched for her, some seeking revenge and others seeking her to take her rightful place, but the Black Raven had vanished. She had taken up a position as a mercenary within the Legion. Her only desire was to repent for her sins and find a way to live a life her father would be proud of.
Heroic Boon: Raven Flight- Tira can instantly move herself to any place within her line of sight, when doing so she leaves a trace of black smoke that takes the appearance of a flock of ravens flying away.
Abilities:
  • Swordsmanship: It is not an understatement to say that Tira was the greatest swordsman ever among the Kal, her training and natural skill makes her a deadly threat with a blade.
  • Blessing of Kalrah: A training technique that allows members of the Kal to hone their reflexes beyond natural levels, as well as the ability to completely balance and focus their natural energies. This comes from a process of meditation as well as the consumption of an herb known as Moonfire that grows naturally within Tevar's boarders.
  • Black Fire: Magical control over the element of fire that manifests itself in the form of black flames. This is a technique known only by the highest ranked among the Kal. Tira's natural ability to use it is what made her of such interest to the Kal.

Limitations:
  • Energy consumption- Both her boon and her magical abilities sap energy from Tira that trade off with her other abilities.
  • Incognito- Tira is currently hiding from the Kal, that are searching furiously for her for many reasons. Therefore she refuses to use powers such as black fire in order to avoid detection.

Equipment:
  • Blade of the Kalkahra The blade belonging to the Kalkahra that has been passed down through generations. It holds destructive fire potential beyond anything else known to the Kal. The blade's power can only be properly controlled by the Kalkahra. It technically belongs to Tira but she does not currently possess it.

Haven't really looked at the others to compare, but it is an interesting question.

Sylanna is a swordfighter first and foremost, and has a lot of training, experience and feats under her belt, so I'd say she's a pretty solid contender :P

Frey's supposed to be highly skilled in his own regard, but he's more of a rogue than a knight, and in any case he's more of a jack of all trades, so I wouldn't put him at the top.

I'm always open.

Strauch is also a pretty good candidate for being the best swordfighter. He's the oldest and being fighting the longest

It could be interesting if Telis and Strauch talked. Given they seem rather different in terms of personality and fighting style.

Hey Tau, are you going to be getting that post up here any time shortly? If you're busy, I'm fine with just driving things along.

Look who's back to NS's roleplaying scene again.

Alright, so one question before I get to making my character: Does tobacco smoking exist in this universe? Or at least during this timeline? I know the setting is pretty much based upon the Middle Ages, and that tobacco won't be introduced to the Europeans until after the New World is settled by European pioneers. However, seeing as the setting pretty much contained a fictional reimagined version of our world, I think maybe tobacco smoking existed somewhere in this RP's universe.

So, does it exist?

Yes. My character is an avid pipe smoker, and one of his weaknesses is shortness of breath in part caused by tobacco smoking (although they don't know that).

Sure. I'll have Telis do that soon.

Name: Walter Schaefer von Eisenach
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Appearance:
Image
Statistics:
Strength: 4
Agility: 4
Endurance: 3
Magical Prowess: 1
Bio:
Walter Schaefer von Eisenach was the third son of a lowly northeastern noble. His mother was a delicate and wise woman, while his father was a kind and caring man. Despite their regional limitations, he received a good instruction in politics, religion, warfare and such things as a noble should. All that was demanded of him was obedience and discipline, which he delivered with love. While he was in no means sheltered, it was not until the coming of his fourteenth year that he the ailment that plagued his family like many other lowly nobles became clear to him: a lack of money. While it wasn't exactly crippling, it frustrated him deeply as his father fell again and again in financial traps and blunders. When he came to pass, Walter, being the third son of the family, was left with a miserable sum and very few possessions during the negotiations, perhaps the consequence of his father's neglect to update his obsolete will.
Naturally, a small fight ensued with his elder brothers, but even if they wished to share their wealth, there wasn't much to go around. In a move that Walter regrets to this day, he proclaimed that he did not need to be tied to the financial mischiefs of his family: they might have the claims to the fief, but he still had the same education. Packing up his bags, and selling what he couldn't carry,, Schaefer set out to what would normally be a small sightseeing tour to calm his tantrum, but became a journey of learning and fighting as a wandering knight who sought wealth and honour. Jumping from contract to contract and band to band, he fought goblins, assassin, barbarians and vandals, and earned a decent reputation.
Recently, he has become tired of the instability of smaller Landsknechte groups, and has joined the ranks of the honourable Legion where he hopes the pay and company will be stable and trustable.
Heroic Boon: Defender of the faith: Solid steel wielded by Walther has been granted resistance against weak demonic and heretical curses and attack spells. However, this protection only applies to his fully armoured body, meaning that anything will go through his Gamberson, chainmail and unprotected face or exposed thighs.
Abilities:
  • [Silent Steel]: Perhaps it is the way he moves, how he wears his padding, or even how he waxes it? The fact is that with some care, Walter can avoid the noise associated with metal armour. He can't quite explain it.
  • [Manual of Arms]: While a beating with a good heavy mace is a good way to end a fight, Walter has demonstrated good accuracy with bladed weapons, and is able to hit gaps in his opponents' armour and defences without as much trouble as is generally had.
  • [Fest steht und treu die Wacht] Scahefer is quite nimble at his feet and good at staying up, a crucial skill in combat. He will quickly recover from blows that would have struck down another man.

Limitations:
  • "Did I get him?": Schaefer neglected training with the bow or the crossbow for far too long. While he can still hunt large game, do not trust him in the stress and confusion of a fight, as he will prove unreliable.
  • "A Witch!": Originating from a community with very few sorcerers, Schaefer has trouble dealing with magic. Whether be understanding or fighting it, he often relies on his companions to handle arcane problems, or even withdraws from situations involving the craft.

Equipment:
  • [Long Sword] A 105 centimetre-long sharpened steel blade, decorated at its hilt. It parries quite well and is very versatile.
  • [Flanged mace] Heavy, sturdy and cheap steel. Great for dealing with armoured oponents or breaking bones.
  • [Utility Leather Belt] Strapped on his belt are scabbards for his weapons, his coin purse, a lantern sometimes and several pouches with rope, maps, keys and most things of value to him.
  • [Cloak] A dark blue cloak with wine and gold decorations and a hood. Protects against the elements and nothing else.
  • [Gamberson Jacket] A jacket made from padded material with detachable long sleeves that reaches his thighs. It protects against blunt trauma, blades as well as weak bowmen. Crossbows and spikes go right through, though.
  • [Chainmail] A second hand short-sleeved suit. It is adequate against slashing and stabbing weapons, and arrows to a greater extent.
  • [Gothic Plate] Perhaps the most expensive item among Walter's equipment is part of a suit of Gothic plate. Though he hadn't enough money for a whole set, Walter possesses pauldrons, greaves, a breastplate and even a close helmet. All pieces are crafted from hardened steel as thick as three millimetres. They can stop blows from warhammers and even thousand-pound crossbows with only small dents.

Ah, alright. Although my character is more of a "roll-up-tobacco-in-a-paper" sort of smoker, I think I can work with that.
