Postby Tosia » Tue Sep 25, 2018 4:33 am

The Year is 1881, As the industrial age carries on, the nations of Europe gather together for a meeting that would change history forever.

In this RP, you will be playing as a nation during the scramble for Africa, you can either be either an African Tribe/Nation or a Foreign Colonizer.

Rules

Every time you RP you are committing an action, you are allowed to do 3 actions per day

Actions are done through rp and actions involving other players require their consent.

War must be somewhat realistic. [ Don't expect a Spear to take down a tank...]

Territorial Claims are first come, first serve and disputes can occur.

When choosing what irl country you are located in, choose wisely.

Read the OOC to get some knowledge required to properly rp and understand what everyone is planning on doing.

Dixie Capital Nashville Tennessee

President Daniel Smith of the newly formed Republic of Dixie paced in his office. These past Few months had not been easy there were growing Clashes between the European and African descended portions of the population.He had been elected due to his promise to reduce the tensions a promise he intended to keep but the problem was the built in beliefs of the more vocal portions of both sides who viewed the other as inferior. But gradually a small portion of both sides are meeting to compromise and come up with ideas on how to ease the hatred meanwhile the Republic was preparing to start a colony in Africa for it's African population who wished to return to their home continent.

Port of Lee, Knessniet

Grand Duke Herman X was leading the celebration. Off goes the first ships bound for Africa, in particular, the Horn of Africa, as it is called. He was the tenth Herman, and next to him was the eleventh, his newborn infant son, who was born just two days ago. He currently was cradled in his mother's arms, as she watched the ships chugging away with her husband.

The whole country was jubilant, as there were rumors of great treasure in Africa. They all hoped so, the peasants for new lands, the merchants for profit, and the nobility for glory. The priests were eager too, as they had been told that there were many heathens that needed converting. Already the Archbishop of Knessniet was drawing up plans for new dioceses based on a crude map he had obtained.

It was only a matter of time, and the ships would return loaded with riches, and tales of new lands.

In less than a century, the republic had transformed from a set of war-torn institutions bent way out of shape to a growing industrial power in Europe. Iberia's banner stood mightily over its new domain of steam and sterling. But at a cost. The foundries and factories constantly demanded resources, and costly imports of said from nations negated many of the profits made from mass industrialization. If Iberia were to be truly great, it would have to find these resources within its own borders.

And so the Congress rambled on and on. Where would they expand their borders. Should they expand their borders? Why even bother? But, after much debate, an agreement was settled. They would look to the African continent, a land of potential opportunity, but also endless seas of sand and jungle. There in that sea would be all the resources they could ever dream of, the resources they would need to power their vast furnaces.

To tackle this problem head on, they first needed to come up with a plan. Where would they land? And what would they do?

Now there was the temptation of trying to strangle control of the Mediterranean from Britain by controlling the other side of Gibraltar, but there were also tales of fertile soil, fit for rubber plantations beyond the Sahara. And there was that one gold kingdom. Perhaps its ruins still lay, waiting to be discovered by Europeans. Eventually the Congress decided on the first two. The third was just ludicrous.

And so they set sail. A first expedition to what is now Morocco, and a second, much longer expedition, to what is now Cameroon.

In 1849, the people of Britain had had enough of the monarchy. Rising up, an alliance of Catholics, Socialists, Democrats and Autocrat Imperialists unseated the monarchy to establish a new government. By 1851, infighting had already begun, and years of maneuvering, assassination and uncertainty faced Britain. Although it was able to keep a hold of all of its colonies, with the exception of Canada, who were granted independence, the situation in the isles themselves was rough. By 1881, however, the situation stabilized. All ideologies got their way, in part, in this new government. The Catholics, the first to take the throne, renamed Britain and changed the flag. The democrats, making it next, were able to create equality in law and in opinion for women, ethnic minorities and homosexuals. The Autocrats and Socialists, realizing that no faction could hold power alone, banded together and seized leadership from the others, creating a new coalition government. Within a year, all remnants of religion and democracy were gone from the British government, although name and flag remained. Taking the term "Empire" to heart, they cracked down on economic and social freedom, and every citizen of Britain, colonial or born in the isles, was turned into an ideologue, devoted and hardworking, unquestioning and unbreaking. Although everybody is equal in this new British Empire, nobody is free. The military was expanded, colonies put under greater authority and producing more resources. But the people are happy.

In an effort to show the nations of Europe, the other empires, the unenlightened masses that the British Empire is still the strongest nation in history, the Architect and Her Gardeners have decreed that the Cape Colony will be expanded. Already, agreements have been hammered out with Egypt and the Free Cape States, and already, troops are expanding North. Ships have been dispatched, set to land on the northwest shores of Africa, and we are preparing for a new expansion.

We are fueled by the drive for enlightenment, and we will bring our Great Knowledge to the people of Africa, and then the People of Europe and Asia and soon, the world will have true Knowledge. We will rain down on our enemies with the force of a million suns, and we will be victorious. We will never give up. We will never allow ourselves to taste true defeat. We will never be extinguished, and we will never be silenced. The Truth cannot be hidden forever, and soon, the people of Africa will Know.

How far we have fallen, thought the young sultan as he looked out the window of his place at Constantinople. He had been reading manuscripts about the history of his grand empire, and the great reign of Suleiman the law giver. History had not been kind to the empire. Years of war have taken its toll, he thought, as he paced the room. We most modernize, that is key. Factories, railroads, telegraphs, modern arms, those are what we need. But modernization world not come easy. The western powers were reluctant to share there knowledge. Furthermore the religious leaders world not be easily persuaded to except the new technology. But even if we could we still lack resources, if only there was place we could exploit without much resistance...Africa!
And so the first colonizers set out, one west ward from Libya, another south from Arabia.

Despite the weakness of its authority, the Alaouite dynasty distinguished itself in the 18th and 19th centuries by maintaining Algeria’s independence while other states in the region succumbed to French or British domination. However, in the latter part of the 19th century Algeria’s weakness and instability invited European intervention to protect threatened investments and to demand economic concessions. The first years of the 20th century witnessed a rush of diplomatic maneuvering through which the European powers and Austria in particular furthered their interests in North Africa.[4]

Austrian activity in Algeria began during the end of the 19th century. In 1881 the Empire succeed establish a protectorate over Algeria, and thinking about making a deal with the Ottoman empire to split up Tunis in exchange for a military alliance.

Cagliari, Sardinia-Corsica
The current Doge gathers his council to discuss a new initiative. The initiative turns out to be the colonization of Africa. The council members debate the pros and cons of this initiative. The initiative passes 8-2. This initiative can bring the Republic to greatness or it can cause it to collapse. The Republic must succeed for the gold to flow into their pockets. LONG LIVE THE DOGE, LONG LIVE THE MERCHANTS, LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC.

A River Runs Besides It
Episode 1: In which the Free Cape Territories are introduced
Word count for this episode: 751 ~~~ Total word count for the entirety of A River Runs Beside It: 751

Dateline Grand Territorial Park, Stellenbosch, Free Cape Territories - 24th September 1881
Near a tree by the river, there's a hole in the... ah, crap, wrong flavour of 80s. Let's start again - just besides the Eerste River, a good twenty-five miles east of Cape Town itself, there lies the town of Stellenbosch, which is entirely encapsulated (and no further) within the Free Cape Territories so-called. "But they're only so-called?" I hear you cry; "They're entirely surrounded by a tyrannical dictatorship which gives equal rights to homosexuals and women!" I'm still not entirely sure as to what this implies, although I wouldn't be surprised if this means they have to work and slave just as hard. Besides, they won themselves independence thirty-two years ago for some Godforsaken reason I've long since forgotten about which probably has something to do with not liking the whole Empire shenanigans.
The Territories, as of now, are as close to a capitalist city-state paradise as can possibly be achieved, if its status as an enclave of the Holy British Empire can at all be taken as proof of a small-scale conflict. This, however, was doubtful; the Free Dollar, unlike the plentiful British imports that the nanoscopic nation had experienced, could not be eaten. Some people, that being said, were still not happy at the Empire's recent plans to "expand the Cape Colony," which inevitably meant dozens cramming into microprotests to condemn the supposedly impending invasion of their national sovereignty.
"Who in their right minds," wailed The Honourable David Harrison in front of a crowd of two hundred or so that masqueraded as some sheer pulsating mass of humanity, "would want to fall under the yoke of these dastardly, bastardly Socialist bastards?" This question was, of course, of a rhetorical nature, owing to the fact that the Grand Union Party had upheld good old conservative values like such for the preceding thirty years or thereabouts on the grounds that any change in power would lead to re-assimilation.
Harrison's "Not I, that is certain!" was responded to with a huge wave of "NOR US!" which surged over the top of the Grand Territorial Park and could probably be heard across the southern and western borders in the general direction of the Empire which their guts had collectively detested. It did show, after all, with the GUP retaining a vaguely democratic stranglehold on eleven seats in the city council; the Socialists and New Democrats one apiece.
This was no re-election campaign... it was a fully-blown governmental barrage in action.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dateline Council Hall, Stellenbosch, Free Cape Territories - 24th September 1881
The current architect of this audacious balancing act, of course, was one Alistair MacShane, the Most Honourable Councillor of them all, who became the second leader of the Free Cape Territories after his forebear had a heart attack befall him barely seventeen years into his rule. His policies were surely clear by now: he liked guns, he wanted guns, he needed them to defend the Territories, he spoke on behalf of the Territories... wait, is that a knock on the door? Arrrgh, that just ruined my train of thought!
"So," noted some vaguely-identifiable message runner who had puffed his way all through reception and the equally-undecipherable corridors of Council Hall, "what about Rachel?"
MacShane could barely grumble at the thought.
"One of your accountants," clarified the almost Marathon-like dispatcher. "She claims that the Territories could be facing a shortage of essential foodstuffs by Christmas if your administration carries on unabatedly hating the Holy British Empire - I do say 'could,' nobody seems to be sure of where our food comes from or even what the Brits think. Even her supervisor agrees, for once."
"At least she's not a left-wing whacko nutjob," wistfully declared the Chair Councillor himself.
"We all need you to sort this shit out," rallied the mysterious man, "or else her job - and everybody else's - will find itself under threat from the British invaders. Are they even invaders? I haven't been told yet, please do take everything I saw---say, my mistake, with a barrelful of salt, but something else is barely hanging on a thread..."
To this, MacShane mustered a nod of the head, which the runner almost certainly interpreted as telling him to return whence he came. I'm not sure as to why anybody would approve of being shoulder-deep in the stuff.
Holy British Empire Has No Designs on Free Cape Colonies
The Free Cape Colonies has long been a friend of the Holy British Empire, and we have no plans of annexation, puppeteering or any violation of sovereignty. In fact, the British Empire would prefer an expanded Free Cape Colony, and is willing to offer conquered territory to our friends and allies.
Nashville Tennessee September 25th 1881
President Smith paced in his office the Republic clearly was at a distinct disadvantage. How could he make Dixie a Global power? They weren't highly industrialized their army was under equipped and supplied. They had 3 small warships that couldn't even be called a navy so he sat and thought. Forge alliances with other powers but through diplomacy and no military alliances? no no nation would ever do that they'd just use it to annex his nation. They needed Resources so he turned his attention to a large Island off the Coast of Africa and launched a colonial expedition to colonize the Island.
Landfall. For both of the expeditions.
The first, which was sent a few days after the second actually, arrived at its destination first due to its proximity. With them they brought some tools and a blank map. They'd be surveying Morocco's sands for a good place to put up a future colony. For several days and nights, the 10-man crew wandered the desert, having to leave behind small scraps so as not to get turned around, for the vast sandy sea looked the same no matter where. After much deliberation and several days rationing rations, the now tired and sweaty crew had mapped the entire area. It seemed to be rich in well, not much really. But there was some opportunity. Native Muslim caravans showed that this place was populated, perhaps some labor can be extracted out of them, and the mystical Spanish port on the Gibraltar Strait drew ever closer.
The second ship was battered by a storm on the way, and was turned around into Guinea Ecuitorial, a small Spanish colony they hoped to integrate into the planned Spanish West Africa. They made their expedition into the jungle from there instead. Immediately they were greeted with the fertile soils they were promised. Spanish West Africa would surely make great rubber plantations. A vast jungle lay ahead. Few natives however, if any at all, for they weren't present where they landed. This colony would provide labor for many a Spaniard. The jubilantly planted a flag, and left a few days later.
Upon returning the Moroccan crew told of the vast expanse that was the Sahara, and how it bore few natural resources. They however, did find many places for potential ports. Rockier ground than usual and facing the sea were the characteristics of those areas. Perhaps they could impose their tariffs on incoming goods using these ports, and not the British's.
The second crew gave out much more extravagant stories, about how the soil could support massive mountains of green, and of animals much weirder than the ones found in Europe. Most of all, they found that you could grow rubber further inland. A great way to expand Guinea Ecuitorial into Spanish West Africa.
The Congress expediently went to work planning the next set of expeditions. A convoy of vast massive ships would be sent to Equatorial Guinea, and they would expand the small colony into a massive beast of a plantation. Meanwhile they would send fine construction workers with ample building materials across the Moroccan sands to build some basic ports where the expeditionaries instructed them to. Those port camps would become the staging point for a much larger colonial effort.
