Character Description

Name: Mariah Wickham
Aliases: Mute (Not her choice, but it was the name people at public school gave her)
Gender: Female
Age (Students are 13 to 21): 18
Appearance: Mariah is 5'4 with black hair and blue eyes and a tattoo of doves on her left arm. The most notable thing about her appearance is the P100 respirator that she wears at all times to protect her sensitive respiratory system.

Fears: Hurting someone by accident because she doesn't know how to control her voice

Strengths and Weaknesses

Powers: Banshee - Mariah's vocal chords produce a sound much louder and higher pitched than a normal person's, and this causes great pain to anyone that hears it. Even a whisper is enough to cause ears to ring, and a full on scream can shatter glass far away from her. Her own hearing doesn't seem to be affected by it, though everyone else around her without some form of protection is at risk of hearing loss up to permanent deafness.

Abilities: Nonverbal communication - To compensate for her dangerous voice, Mariah has learned instead to rely on several forms of sign language to convey her meanings without harming anyone.

Equipment: Respirator, notepad and tablet for writing messages.

Weaknesses: Mariah is terrified of hurting someone with her voice, so she simply doesn't talk, ever. This hampers her communication with people, since she has to rely on either sign language or written messages. Both of these require the recipient to look at her, possibly missing whatever they were looking at. Should her hands be bound or otherwise incapacitated, she won't have any way of communicating other than gesturing with her head.

Her respiratory system is also extremely sensitive to particulates and pollution, forcing her to wear a respirator. She can take it off briefly if she needs to use her voice, but spending a long time in dirty air without it will cause her to cough, choke, and potentially suffocate.

Legal Status: No criminal record since adulthood. Several accidental destruction of property investigations as a minor.

General: Unlike a lot of metas, Mariah's mutations have been a problem since she was very young. Ever since she could talk, her voice has been causing damage and injury. This has led her to become very afraid of it, and forced her to live life almost entirely without it. She also spent a lot of time in the hospital for various breathing issues. She was tested for asthma, bronchitis, COPD, emphysema and others, but she never quite fit the bill for a full diagnosis of any of them. What the doctors found instead, was that even in air that was fine for normal people, Mariah's lungs struggled as if she was in a smog-ridden city. This led to her wearing a respirator, making her even more self-conscious about herself.

Between her voice and her respirator, Mariah had a hard time making friends because she was incredibly shy and nervous about her appearance. Her lack of social skills and her different appearance made her a frequent target of bullying, and eventual Mariah was withdrawn from public school completely in favor of private tutoring. This removed any chance she had of a social life though, so as a last resort she was sent to Lefevre Manor to be alongside other children who are different in the hopes that maybe she will fit in somewhere.

The similarity to the Greybeards from Skyrim was 100% unintentional, but they're a decent enough reference (even whispering, they shook the castle) though her voice is more similar to Black Canary than Borri, Wulfgar or Einarth in terms of pitch and volume
