Name: Joe Foster
Age: 61
Occupation: Retired, formally a forest worker for the United States Forest Service
Appearance: Joe is six foot two inches in height and is of somewhat thin build. He is considered athletic for his age, and still maintains his fitness. Joe has short, grey hair around the sides of his head with no hair on top. He has grey stubble around his cheeks and face. Joe's skin reflects his age, with sagging skin and slight jowls. He has green eyes and a couple of missing teeth. His nose is slightly out of shape.

Belongings: Joe usually carries the following about his person:
  • A set of keys to his house, to a 1992 Dodge Power Ram W-250, to a rundown 1971 Dodge Travco that hasn't moved in several years, and to a locker containing several rifles.
  • One brown leather wallet containing a driver's licence, between $50-150 in cash (Joe doesn't believe in credit cards), a folded up piece of paper with a couple of phone numbers on it, and a folded copy of his open carry permit
  • One Colt Diamondback .38 Special revolver with a black leather hip holster

Within his pickup, there usually can be found:
  • A box of .38 Special ammunition
  • Two maps, one issued by the United States Forest Service and one of Pendleton, Oregon
  • A notebook and accompanying pen
  • A film camera and two spare rolls of film
  • A first aid kit cobbled together over the years

Skills: Joe posesses skills from his time as a forestry worker as well as those gained as a recreational hunter. He is good at identifying animal and human prints and knows the calls of most of the animals in the forest, including those currently unknown to science. Joe's relationship with firearms is intimate and can not only handle one very well, he is also a crack shot.

Weaknesses: Joe has one primary physical weakness; a gunshot wound on his left calf, a result from a scuffle between himself an a poacher when he worked for the United States Forest Service. In terms of other weaknesses, Joe is often mistrustful of others and it takes him a long time to become friendly with the people of the town.

Personality: Joe is a solitary and mistrustful man whose views on the world border on the conspiratorial. He's not a tinfoil-hat wearing caricature, but firmly believes the government is hiding a lot from the public that they shoul rightfully know about. He has a healthy respect for nature, owing to the amount of time spent there.

Among other things, Joe is not a fan of modern technology, believing that everything was perfect as it was before the turn of the new millennium. He does without a mobile phone, computer, television, and credit cards. He pays in cash from a stash inside a safe found in his Travco.

Likes: Joe is a fan of country music from the 1960's and 1970's, particularly Marty Robbins. He is also a fan of "pop" music from the 1950's, as they were the songs he enjoyed as a child. To this extent, Joe is the proud owner of perhaps one of the largest vinyl collections in Cedarview.

As mentioned previously, Joe loves his solitude. Although he shared most of it with someone else, Joe has revelled in the freedom that he currently enjoys, being able to engage in his hobbies that fell by the wayside. In addition, it gives him time to focus on the latest disappearance.

Joe loves the outdoors and spends as much time as he can in it. He doesn't hunt as much as he used to, as his leg wound generally limits how far he can walk. Despite this, he spends a lot of time walking the nature trails from Derringer Park, to the extent that he likely knows them better than anyone else. His outdoors experience also came into play when he volunteered to search for Alice Lowland.

Dislikes: Joe is not an especially big fan of government, local, state or otherwise. Having dealt with all three tiers during his lifetime has given him a healthy dose of disrespect for civil servants and bureaucracy. His distrust also stems from the belief that the government (he often doesn't delinate what level) is hiding things from the public, and that they would do anything to keep those things hidden.

Joe also dislikes snakes. He simply doesn't like them. Thinks that they're sinister legless lizards.

Goals: Solve the mystery of the missing people and expose the truth behind the disappearances, as well as the other mysterious goings on.
Fears: Losing his freedom, being silenced.

Biography: Joe Foster was born on January 7, 1947 in Vanport, Oregon to white parents who had moved there from Pendleton in search of employment during the war. His father worked in one of the factories located nearby, and his mother was a stay at home wife, raising Joe and his older sister. Joe doesn't remember the flood of 1948 as he was only a year old when it happened. His family were one of the lucky ones, who escaped with some of their belongings.

Now homeless, the Foster family moved north to Washington where his father gained a job working in the Boeing factory in Everett. There the family settled and began to live a modest but steady life. His father was not as strict as the fathers of Joe's friends, many of whom were Second World War, and later, Korean War, veterans. Joe would bring the first money in for himself at age 10, when he got himself a local paper route. In 1963, aged 16, Joe left high school to work as a labourer with a local construction firm.

Much of his childhood thus far had been spent bonding with his father by fishing and hunting on the Olympic Peninsular, and Joe received his first rifle when he earned enough money to pay for the ammunition from his paper route. The family would also spend Thanksgiving and Christmas at the family farm near Pendleton in northeastern Oregon. There he'd hone his skills shooting tins cans off a fence with his cousins and his younger brother. There were also many summer holidays spent here. Joe looks upon this time very fondly. It was also where he'd hear his storied from his uncle who served in Italy during the Second World War, and his grandfather, a Great War veteran and a logger. His grandfather's stories especially during his time logging in western Oregon and in the Cascades interested him immensely, especially the stories about Bigfoot.

Joe had only just started working when his world was turned upside down. His family were returning to Washington after New Years when the car driven by their father lost control on the icy roads and skidded into the path of an oncoming pickup truck. James lost his younger brother, sister and father in the accident and his mother became an invalid. Now forced to look after her, James began working full time as a labourer at Boeing. This lasted until he was 18, by then it was clear he could not provide for his mother.

In June 1965, Joe and his mother moved back to the family farm in Pendleton where he and his uncle were better able to care for his mother. Unsure of what to do, he hung around the farm for a few months before deciding to take up a job as a trail worker with the National Forest Service. This job was the best thing that happened to Joe; it enabled him to get out into the outdoors and it sometimes provided him with the solitude and the freedom he desired. Joe initially wasn't in a fixed spot, having pretty much wandered about the forests where the forest service wanted him to go. In 1975, Joe began volunteering for the forest service's search and rescue team, working in central Oregon. He soon was deployed on his first search for a hiker who was reported missing in the Umatilla National Forest. It wouldn't be the first time that Joe would find a dead body, but it'd be the first time Joe would find someone that had been torn apart the way they did. As Joe began searching for more and more people who had disappeared without a trace, he quickly began to see why the forest service was keeping suspiciously quiet about people going missing on federal lands.

Not all of his early years in the forest service were filled with suspicion and disbelief. In June 1973, aged 26, Joe met Mary-Ann Summers, a 22 year old biology student from Portland University who was taking a summer internship with the United States Forest Service. Normally an independent man, Joe felt something with Mary-Ann that he couldn't quite put his finger on. He felt himself drawn to this woman, who herself had a bit of an independent streak. Their lives would change that December, when Mary-Ann announced that she was pregnant. Suddenly a new dynamic to their burgeoning relationship developed. Suddenly the both of them had to put aside their want for freedom and become responsible adults. Joe wouldn't admit it, but the arrival of their first child, Emily, created a feeling of mutual animosity that was tactfully masked underneath what many would assume was a stable marriage, as the couple got married soon after the announcement of the pregnancy. Mary-Ann abandoned her ambitions to become a biologist to take care of Emily, and then their second daughter, Jessica, who arrived in 1974, and Joe ended up taking over the family farm in Pendleton. Although the both of them had been working in Umatilla, Mary-Ann's family was over in Eugene and she wanted to be close to them. Joe wanted to be closer to his mother, but her death in 1978 and his lack of knowledge in running a farm allowed him to cut ties with Pendleton. The family finally upped sticks and moved west, settling in Cedarview.

Joe found a similar job in the Siuslaw National Forest to the one he had working at Umatilla, and once the kids began school, she went back to study biology before being placed into the same forest where her husband worked. In 1981, Joe saw a Sasquatch for the first time while searching for a missing child near the Salmonberry Camp Ground. They found the child dead in a nook inside a large tree. What shook him was how peaceful the child looked, like it had been sleeping there. The clothes were not torn, and there wasn't even any mud on the shoes. Joe would continue to encounter strange things during the remainder of his time in the forest service. Beginning in the 1990's, Joe would start writing down his memories, and bought a notebook to document new encounters. This slowly progressed into formal interviews with current and former coworkers, detailing their experiences.

This documentation would come to a brief halt in 1993, when Joe encountered a poacher within Siuslaw on a routine drive out to fix a small slip that had undermined a walking track. After confronting him, the poacher turned his rifle on Joe, shooting him in the calf. Joe radioed for help, and the poacher took off into the forest. Joe would spend several days in hospital and a further four months recovering. He would never walk the same again, and this restricted mobility meant he had to give up working as a track worker. He steadfastly refused to give up his status as a search and rescue volunteer, and to this extent continued to participate in searches for missing persons. He also signed up for summer duty as a watchman on the fire towers in the forest, much to the consternation of Mary-Ann. A cancer diagnosis in 1998 finally brought him back in from the forest, and when she did six months after in January 1999, Joe struggled to find the tears to mourn her passing. The funeral saw a massive argument between him and his daughters, and he left before her casket was laid to rest. Within a couple of months, the family home had been put up for sale, and Joe had bought a dilapidated log cabin on the main road out of town. John finally retired from the service in 2003, having made his home in the forest.

The five years since then have more or less been as he saw fit. Joe went back to his research and documenting of strange occurrences, in addition to participating in the searches for Jennifer Tallow and Alice Lowland, despite his limited mobility. However, he grew distrustful of the police in their handling of both cases, as well as their repeated visits to try and stop him from prying further. The latest case disturbed him even more, because the details simply didn't add up. Joe knew something was amiss, but he couldn't quite figure it out.

I didn't think so many people would make mention of her but Jennifer Tallow disappeared a bit to the south, at least according to official reports as her car was located south on Highway 101 in Rockaway Beach. Regardless, a search was undoubtedly conducted and it's not that far a drive if he volunteered to assist, it would just be the jurisdiction of another city. Just so everybody is aware. ACCEPTED.

Likes: The outdoors, guns, hunting, fishing, cars, reading
Dislikes: Teenagers, the government, and outsiders
Fears: That the government is behind the disappearances and that he's next.

Misc. Army vet.

Biography:
Jim Robbins was born in 1938, shortly before the opening hostilities of WWII. His father enlisted in the Navy days after Pearl Harbor, and was badly wounded in the Battle of Okinawa when a kamikaze rammed his picket ship. His father's injuries were bad enough that he was given a medical discharge. After the war, when his father was in better health, young Jim learned to hunt and fish, instilling a lifelong love of the outdoors and guns. His father's military service inspired him to join the Army upon graduating from high school in 1956. While on leave in 1959, he married his longtime girlfriend Sarah Wilson. In 1964, a the age of 28, Jim was sent into combat as a Sergeant, leading a squad. Oddly enough, somebody from his hometown was the platoon's chaplain.

In 1965, he took a grenade fragment in the chest during a river crossing, when someone tripped a VC booby trap. He lost a lot of blood and had to be evacuated by helicopter. The injury wasn't serious enough for a medical discharge, so he was back with his platoon within six months. He completed one final tour of duty and returned home, on his wife's insistence, so they could raise their young son Evan, who was 4. In 1967, they had a daughter, whom they named Jackie. In 1972, Jim and Sarah decided to rent a small shop and open a gun store called Patriot Arms.

Than in 1977, everything changed. Jackie was playing in the woods near town, but she didn't come home at dinner. Jim called his parents, to ask if they had seen his daughter. They had not. He called his neighbors with the same result. He got worried, and called together some neighbors to search the woods with him and Sarah. They couldn't find her. They went to the police, and Jim told them he suspected foul play. They never found anything. This whole incident made Jim extremely paranoid about the disappearances. After that when someone disappeared, he would immediately help search for them. He came to blame the federal government for the disappearances.

In 1986, his mother died of cancer. His father never really recovered from her death. Fifteen years later, his father died of a heart attack. Jim and Sarah began buying food and supplies to survive a disaster. In early 2008, when the little girl disappeared, Jim and Sarah were there to help investigate the disappearance, which brought back bad memories from when their little girl went missing.

Looks good. I assume as a doomsday prepper he doesn't have a bunker or anything? Additionally, keep in mind that not every disappearance would be knowingly tied to Cedarview. Alice Lowland is a local who disappeared, and there was other disappearances over the years, but a decent number would also be outsiders whose disappearances would be investigated elsewhere due to evidence. Jennifer Tallow, for example, was believed to have disappeared in Rockaway Beach.

The town grew from 400 to 3,500 people in the span of less than 40 years (1946 - 1980) so the town's population would probably have been over 2,000 in 1969. A town isn't going to gain 2,000+ people in less than ten years. I assume the Walther P99 is a personal weapon as those weapons aren't used by American law enforcement. Why does he need three guns anyway? Everyone is arming themselves excessively for a horror story. Second, I'd take a moment to read through everything to fix grammar mistakes since there appears to be a lot. Concerning the bio, why would he wait for Rosy to finish university before joining the Army to help with tuition? Unless you mean debt. Kingfisher Lake and Kingfisher Trail branch off from Derringer Park, so are probably traveled a good deal, so would be a poor location for people cooking drugs. The last paragraph is a bit of a mess as well.

Minor, and this is for reference for everyone, but I looked to the area of Oregon where Cedarview would be and the only town with a larger population would be Seaside, Oregon, way to the north past Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach and Rockaway Beach are similarly sized to Cedarview but enjoy higher rates of tourism.

Biography:
Aaron Burke was born in rural Quebec as the son of poor farmers. His life between the ages of 1 and 9 were insignificant to him in later life. Looking back he doesn't remember his early schooling at all, apart from the drudgery of learning cursive and math. He was generally thought of as a good kid, albeit a bit superstitious in comparison to his peers. In truth e was not so uncommon in his beliefs, because the town was well known for its local legends. He was simply more vocal about it than his friends. His parents however weren't amused by their sons unhealthy fascination with the local Orlean Bridge Ghost Girl, or the bloody footprints one could supposedly see at night if they traveled down the Shadow Path in a local park.

When he was 11 years old his family decided that it would be best for their sons future if they to the USA. Aaron resisted but it was to no avail. His father was sold on the idea that the United States would ultimately be a better place for the family to live. They began to look at homes in a variety of different cities and places. It was unfortunate that most of them were too expensive, had high crime or were simply unfit for a group of poor Canadian immigrants. There was one place that wasn't so bad, though it was small and barely heard of. They had learned about it from someone who had moved away from it incidentally, and was staying in Quebec at the time.

Cederview in 1980 you could say was prospering. It was due in part to the Colton Silver Mine, the same mine that Aarons father intended to work at once they moved. So moving day came and the group, after going through the necessary requirements to gain entry, arrived in Cederview for the first time. Times were initially good, the elder Burke managed to get his hoped for job at the mine and Aaron began to attend a new school. He hated it. Cederview's school was even smaller than the one he had attended in Quebec and the requirements were harsher. Still, he was an intuitive kid and made it work, coming out with above-average grades in comparison to his natural born peers. It made his family proud, but that pride diminished when they learned he was once again becoming fascinated with the disappearances.

Like any curious kid, he explored and those explorations helped pave his new interests. When he was fourteen he began to break into abandoned buildings and explored the forest with a new group of friends, searching for boogymen that may or may not have ever existed at any point in time. Unlike his friends these getaway began to take up more and more of his free time, he was becoming obsessed with them, even and especially those that were occurring outside of town. He scoured news articles, read book after book on the subject of disappearance and yet never could find a good conclusion as to what was actually causing the people to go missing.

Fast forwards to Aaron at the age of nineteen, newly graduated from the High School. His grades remained consistent through his entire schooling experience. He had his green card, as did the rest of his family, and life was good. He still spent most of his time exploring the town. He had to resort to exploring the same places twice just to keep himself busy, as he'd already gotten to many different places in the town. His friends had long since stopped joining these expeditions, finding jobs and courting girls or moving away to college or to find work that didn't involve silver mining.

Aaron moved from his parents house into a local apartment and began to take odd jobs to make ends meet. Most of these odd jobs happened to be physical labor, something he wasn't particularly good at. It was enough to get him by, but his existence wasn't something to be proud of. Day in he worked, day out he explored. This was his ritual, a time honored and unique to him ritual that continued and continued. Occasionally there was a disappearance, almost everyone seemed to forget them after some time, but he didn't. He began to keep a log, and every newspaper clipping regarding the disappearances. Every one was significant to him, he burned with a desire to solve the mystery others had given up on.

This labored, some would say freaky, lifestyle continued until 1997. His father, now in his fifty's and approaching retirement from the mines was killed in an accident which also killed six other people. His mother was devastated, as was he, but the difference was that his mother was much older than him. She disappeared a year later, many believed that she had gone off and committed suicide in the woods. Aaron didn't believe that story, and added the disappearance to his log and his stories. By this time he was solidified as the village idiot. The odd jobs had stopped coming and he had to move into an old RV he inherited from his deceased father. He was labelled off as a drudge of society, but that didn't bother him.

Time passed as it always did, there were more and more disappearances that couldn't be solved. He couldn't solve them, nor could the police. Victim after Victim and no one seemed to care until it was their own father, their own brother, child. There was no public outcry, because the disappearances weren't so frequent as to be wholly alarming. At least thats what he told himself to get over his anger at the citizens of Cederview for not taking action.

That is until a sixteen year old girl went missing from her home seven months ago. There was the public outcry, finally attention was coming to the issue. He made his way out to share his findings only to find that no one, not even old classmates and friends would listen to him. Brick wall after brick wall, even reporters shrugged him off as some cook. He was hurt but nonetheless still motivated to not let the momentum go to waste. If only he could find evidence of what had happened, if he could learn, then maybe he wouldn't be the crazy old coot people labelled him off as.

Misc. Single relationship status.

Biography: Alexandra was born in Springfield, Oregon on 1970. Her father was a medium-scale carpentry industrial owner, while her mother was a housewife. Alexandra was also the third and youngest daughter from the three daughters. Even from the young age, Alexandra showed promising talent in the entertainment industry, starred in commercials from the young age. Her mother supported her daughters in the entertainment industry, though Alexandra showed the most promising one even when she was the youngest. Her eldest sister never went beyond commercials, while her middle sister didn't cared enough about entertainment industry and rather be a doctor.

When she was 20, she starred in Springefield-produced The Timber Family, a drama sitcom revolves around a family of timber-based industry when the timber industry in Springfield was in a bad times. The TV show went for seven seasons, and Alexandra became famous from the show, locally and regionally, but not for long. She went to the college in-between the TV show and got a degree in Film. With her acting career go nowhere, she tried to do the directing and screenwriting jobs, but from the 3 movies of which she was involved in some capacity, it went nowhere. Mediocre reviews, all in all, and all still located mostly in Springfield. She got roles in small-screen in small roles. When she was 37 at that point, she was a C-list actress.

She needed to find some kind of imagination, an idea, for a breakthrough in her career. She visited Cedarview, a small town in Oregon. She had heard the missing persons in the town. And well, that kind of case in a small town was a big thing. Therefore, it is in her interest to finds the source of this story. Perhaps, once she finds the real thing she would be able to use this as a breakthrough for her own career.

Perhaps my gramps served as a Chaplain in the same outfit as your gunner, so while your character may not like kids overall, one or two exceptions would be fine?

That could be an interesting plot point....

Thanks. He'll likely have a good amount of supplies stowed away, yes.

I've updated it. If you could review it please.

Would probably be more a D-Lister considering she's obscure now. ACCEPTED.

ACCEPTED.

DENIED. To put it bluntly I don't think this character will be accepted without some major revisions. Super-cool computer hackers generally come across as edgy, but hacking into government files, military at that, is a good way to commit suicide by shooting yourself twice in the head, more-so if you're still in the country. While I don't mind an unhinged character, and even want such characters, his background is implausible to a ridiculous degree and seems more at home in a low-budget thriller than a horror movie. Lastly, concerning the disappearances, and this has been addressed in previous posts, Cedarview has had several missing persons over the years (more of which will be added to the list as people investigate) but not everyone who's disappeared and is relevant to the plot "disappeared" in Cedarview. Jessica Tallow is believed to have disappeared in Rockaway Beach, for example. Change up the backstory if you will.
