Frontlines: The German Assault

Current Date: June 26, 1941

1st Campaign: Operation Barbarossa | Chapter One: Battle of Białystok–Minsk

Welcome to Frontlines: The German Assault! A real life tactics based RP centered on the German assault into the Soviet Union in an Alternate History that can vary either in small ways or large based largely on the actions of your characters! Experience the brutal realities of war from the boots of a German Officer commanding a platoon of the Wehrmacht's finest on the Eastern Front (and possibly beyond) where survival is far from guaranteed and the enemy will fight to the bitter end. Expect to be challenged by the Soviet Menace, and expect to make hard decisions that could result in anything from Character death to mass casualties for everyone involved. See and experience a new form of PvE RPing which will test your skills as a commander in the deadliest Front known to man and see if you have what it takes to reign victorious. Do not expect an easy victory though, this RP will require dedication, cool heads, and persistence in order to obtain new and unique scenarios that will change the history of WW2 as we know it.

How It Works And Gameplay

Game Storyline
This game is organized into Individual "Battles" & "Campaigns". Battles are the individual conflicts between the player forces and the enemy. Battles are grouped into campaigns. The results of one battle will determine the style of the next battle. Battles grouped together form a campaign, which the primary element this game will use to determine the course of the war. Over the course of a campaign, players have options for growth and advancement, but it is limited. At the conclusion of campaigns, however, the actions of players and their units will be fully evaluated for rank promotions and awards. Utilizing the Battle & Campaign structure, players can generate an entirely new story and outcome for the Second World War.

Determining Outcomes
Every battle will have a battlemap posted and maintained by a Battlemod (typically myself). Usually battles will have strategic points to capture or defend and the players' ability to accomplish their objectives determines the outcome of a battle. To determine player success, Battlemods (OP/Co-OP's) will use Random Number Generators (RNGs) that take into account several factors - tactical considerations (Numbers, positions, weapons, Ground Support), Roleplay quality (Better posts will yield better results), and skills of the officer. Players will post the actions of their unit, and to a small extent the reactions of the enemies (Not to the point of God Modding, ie murdering entire platoons of Russian infantry without a single casualty) up to the point where they can determine what occurred (i.e. two or three posts about their unit fighting, positioning, inflicting damage, etc. then a battlemod will look over player posts, post results and potentially update the map if necessary. Battles may be subdivided between mods to cover larger areas or ease administrative burden though for the beginning battles should be small enough to be managed by a single mod.

Player Units

Infantry & Armor
Player units will have two statistics to keep in mind, Strength and Morale. Strength determines how strong your unit can fight due to numbers, skill, experience, etc. given as a rating and morale determines your unit's willingness to surrender or retreat. Battlemods will factor these in when determining the percentages of the RNGs as well as determining your unit's actions.

Base Strength: 1 = 100% of Bonuses and Base percentages of success rolls are counted (so if base score is 30% then all 30% will be counted, where as if strength is halved only 15% of base will be counted)
Base Morale: 1 = 100% chance of standing and fighting, if at .5 it's only 50% and so forth, lower scores equal higher chances of your unit retreating or outright surrendering despite orders from players. Losing large amounts of men/panzers will decrease a unit's morale significantly.

Player Skills

Players may take two skills When they first join. Every promotion afterwards unlocks a new skill. Skills may be selected more than once to increase their benefit.

Infantry & Armor
- Offensive Doctrine: Player Unit fights better on the offensive (Adds 10% to offensive actions)
- Defensive Doctrine: Player Unit fights better on the defensive (Adds 10% to defensive actions)
- Superior Officer: Base strength of player unit increases by .3 (Strength now becomes 1.3 which equals 130%)
- Inspiring Presence: Base morale increases by .3 (Morale now becomes 1.3 which equals 130%)
- Artillery Spotter: Artillery Support is more effective when used by this player (Adds 5% to base artillery scores)
- Air Support Spotter: Aerial Support is more effective when used by this player (Adds 5% to base air support scores)
- Rapid Attacker: You are able to coordinate rapid assaults and counter-offensives much better. (Removes the 5% penalty to rapid assaults without prep-time for your unit)
- Mechanic School: You and your unit are able to repair damaged vehicles or maintain them. (Able to Regain Strength at the end of a round based on RNG, available only for Panzer Units)
- Close Quarters Doctrine: You excel at leading close quarters fighting against your enemies. (Adds 10% bonus to CQB actions)
- Snipers: Your unit has snipers attached to it (Infantry Only - Getting this skill again gives better snipers, adds a 5% Bonus to all Offensive and Defensive actions)
- Superior Equipment: Your unit has received better than standard equipment in one area (Generally granting a +.2 base strength but when selecting this skill, specify the group you're choosing to upgrade and allow to continue to upgrade as new equipment becomes available. Selecting this again can allow for another better-than-standard equipment group. For Infantry the groups are rifles, machine guns, and infantry anti-tank weapons. For tanks it allows access to the different superior armor groups like medium, heavy, and light tanks as well as tank destroyers.)
- Influential: You are considered an important officer, meaning more support is granted to you +10 Support Points
- Skilled Soldiers: Your men are of better quality than most +.2 Strength and Morale. Taking this again makes them even better.

Support Points

Support Points are used by officers to help them accomplish their missions. The amount of support points available are limited, however, to simulate the limit on resources and availability of support. Player officers may combine their Support Points if working on the same objective to simulate the increased use of resources devoted to that important objective. Player rank determines how many support points they have. Support Points replenish after every battle. These points are very limited and so should be conserved for important objectives.

Infantry & Armor
- Infantry Mortar Bombardment: 10 Support Points (Best for small concentrations of Infantry or small point targets such as machine gun nests)
- Heavy Mortar Bombardment: 30 Support Points (Best for medium concentrations of Infantry or medium point targets such as non-concrete buildings)
- Artillery Barrage: 50 Support Points (Best for large concentrations of Infantry, small concentrations of enemy armor, and fortified point targets such as bunkers)
- Tank Busters: 15 Support Points (Best for small concentrations of enemy armor)
- Aerial Recon: 20 Support Points (Gain a +10% to an offensive action)
- Aerial Strafing: 15 Support Points (Best against small concentrations of infantry or small point targets such as machine gun nests)
- Aerial Bombardment: 50 Support Points (Best against large concentrations of infantry, medium concentrations of enemy armor, and large non-fortified positions such as a city block or small town)
- Carpet Bombing: 70 Support Points (Best against extremely large concentrations of infantry, large concentrations of enemy armor, and large fortified positions such as bunker systems or literal forts)

History: Born to a middle-class family in the capital of Thuringia (Weimar) during the ending months of WWI. His father was a soldier in the trenches and he was devastated when Germany surrendered on November 11, 1918. He, like many others thought that they had been betrayed by leftists within the German government, and he became increasingly bitter as time went on. He made this clear to Heinrich and his younger sister (Hermine Gunther) as they grew up as well as instilled nationalistic pride in them. Then, when Heinrich was 16 and his sister 13, they moved to Warsaw to live with their uncle after Heinrich's parents died in a car crash.

Heinrich's uncle was an accountant for a bank in Warsaw during its time as "New East Prussia" in the German Empire. The bank was owned by the Warszawski family, a family of Jews who'd changed their last name to avoid anti-Semitic attacks on themselves and their business. Of the Warszawski family was Eliza, a 15 year old girl at the time who quickly took a liking to Heinrich, who promptly returned the favor. The relationship grew over time and Eliza's Parents were open to the two marrying, of which the young couple did desire. However before they could marry, Eliza's family could see the writing on the wall that many too had seen, Hitler's Germany would be coming for Poland much like it had Austria and Czechoslovakia.

In January 1938, the Warszawski family packed their things and moved to the British Colony of Palestine, Eliza and Heinrich vowed to stay in touch. Without a job in Warsaw anymore, Heinrich's uncle moved back to Weimar, Germany with Heinrich and Hermine. At age 19, with no job and a loan from his Uncle, and an old nationalist streak being brought back up by National Socialist propaganda, Heinrich joined an officer's school and began training. He was fast tracked through in January of 1940 in order to prepare him for the invasion of France. Serving with the 29th Infantry Division, Heinrich has been in the Wehrmacht since and he has seen combat serval times against British and French forces. After France Heinrich participated in the conflict in Yugoslavia as well.

Now, with Germany invading the Soviet Union, Heinrich and his men are prepared once more to face the enemy and win another Victory for the Fatherland.

Am I correct in saying that this is a reboot?
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

Yes, with major changes in the background mechanics of the game to make it a bit more challenging. As well as AH elements at the start of the RP which will be revealed in the reserved area.

Character Application
Name: Peter Schwann
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: German
Rank: Lieutenant
Unit: First Platoon, First Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Regiment, Seventeenth Panzer Division
Skills: Superior Equipment, Skilled Soldiers
Appearance: Black short cropped hair, fair skin, blue eyes, 5'11, 175 lbs
Personality: Peter is defined by his cunning and wits, although he has a sense of honor and even a little pride. He cares for his soldiers, and his very nationalistic, however he will follow his orders and put his men in danger if his superiors or even other commanders need him to do so. However, he will not waste the lives of his men, and even has reservations about ordering young soldiers to their deaths.
History: Born to the son of a WWI veteran who had become a politician, Peter did not have many options. Either become a member and aspiring politician in the Nazi party, or commission as a junior officer in the Wehrmacht. He lived a normal childhood, and never really cared for the politics of Berlin, so he gained a commission as a Lieutenant after finishing his studies in psychology at the University of Freiburg. He would train in every position of the tank, and learn ways to lead soldiers and tanks into battle.

So, we only have the two takers so far, this post will act as both a bump to revive interest and a request that if you have any friends who might be interested then feel free to invite them. Otherwise I really won't be able to go forward with this RP since we need at least another few people, two at least.

I would like to be a tank commander, since infantry seems too complicated. I just need to decide if I want to get the mechanic school skill or double down on influential.

Character Application
Name: Fritz Stracke
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: German
Rank: Leutnant
Unit: 2nd Platoon/1st Company/1st Battalion/1st Motorized Infantry Regiment/29th Infantry Division/XLVII Panzer Corps/2nd Panzer Group
Skills:
*Inspiring Presence: Base morale increases by .3 (Morale now becomes 1.3 which equals 130%)
*Close Quarters Doctrine: You excel at leading close quarters fighting against your enemies. (Adds 10% bonus to CQB actions)
Appearance:
Image

Personality: Fritz couldn't care less about politics or the Nazi Party. Though he is a member, the only think that he really cares about is his family and his men. He is motivated to fight only because he wants his children to grow up in a world where they have the best opportunities, and though he doesn't care who the enemy is, he understands that if Germany is invaded, it could have repercussions much like the Treaty of Versailles. He will do what it takes to secure victory and to live to see another day.
History: Fritz was born on March 5th, 1909 as the fifth child of a carpenter in Leipzig, The German Empire. His early years were rather simple, seeing the unfortunate death of two younger siblings as well as an uncle and a grandfather. When the Great War broke out in 1914, his father was pressured to enlist and did so with some hesitation. He was transferred to the Front line almost immediately. More through dumb luck and the good graces of his officers did he survive the first three brutal years of the war, eventually dying in August 18th of 1917, the victim of an English sharpshooter. In the end The War claimed nearly all adult males of the Stracke family, leaving only the kids to carry the family name.

His mother never remarried, but did work hard enough to be able to afford to send Fritz to school. He did not excel, nor did he flunk out. His grades were all around average. Growing up in the Interwar years he was forced to work several jobs just to get his family by. When the Nazi's began their rise to power, he was not involved. He had become apart of the German Military early in the Wiemar Republic. He made the easy transfer when the Wehrmacht was formed and soon came to be the head of a Platoon. He also joined the Nazi Party (because of social pressure) and married a young woman called Helga Kolz. Helga would give him three children, two sons and a daughter. When the time came he participated in the Invasion of Poland, again he was pressured by colleagues and committed several killings of Polish POW's.

The fall of Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and France, he participated in it all before being transferred to rather boring duties on the border with the USSR. In 1941, after two years of not being able to knock Britain out of the war the Fuhrer invaded its neighbor and he was among the invasion. As long as he can remain in contact with his family, he has no issues with carrying out his orders. His men love him, just as he loves them.
Equipment:
1x Comand Squad
1x Leutnant (Armed with MP-40, Walther P38 or Luger P08)
1x Unterfeldwebel (Platoon XO, armed with MP-40, Walther P38)

I think I might finally stop lurking just to take part in this fabulous sounding RP. :)

Character Application
Name: Dietrich Steinhäuser
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: German
Rank: Leutnant
Unit: 2nd Platoon/1st Company/Second Battalion/Seventh Regiment/Seventeenth Panzer Division
Skills:
- Offensive Doctrine (Adds 10% to offensive actions)
- Skilled Soldiers (+.2 Strength and Morale)
Appearance:
Image

Personality: For lack of a better term, Dietrich lives for battle. A tenacious and ruthless officer, he was quietly eager when the Wermacht crossed into Poland and has fully embraced the chaotic state of global warfare. Not necessarily patriotic, he cares little for the aims and objectives of the Nazi regime and his only concern is his next battle. Despite coldly exhibiting typical sociopathic traits, Dietrich is not fanatical. He simply sees the Soviets as those to be engaged and destroyed, and at a push, worthy opponents. As such, he is an aggressive commander who prefers being on the offensive and advancing into enemy territory. To his men, he is slightly firm and overbearing, demanding high standards of training and preparation. For all their groaning, this has made them more skilled than the average tank crewman.

History:
Dietrich was born in 1910 in the town of Memmingen, Bavaria to a single mother. Too young and mentally fragile to handle the birth on her own, custody of the young boy soon passed into the care of her elder brother, Tomas and his wife, who resided not far from Königsbrunn. The two never really cared much for the boy compared to their own young daughter, Lena, and adopted him out of duty and obligation to the family name rather than genuine love. As such, he lived an odd childhood, never fully connecting with his adoptive parents. When Tomas, like so many other young German men, was called to the Western Front in 1914, he wasn't necessarily missed.

By the time Tomas returned, shell-shocked and guilt-ridden, to a broken Germany, Dietrich had grown into a sheltered yet aggressive young boy. He quietly persevered in his school work and troubles at home, but was at times viciously cruel to Lena. He sensed the distance between the family and himself and was angered by what he saw as his treatment as a second-class child. Over the years, this resent grew and grew. Ultimately, when they turned down his requests to track down his birth mother, a teen-aged Dietrich had no choice but to leave.

Jobless and homeless, Dietrich turned to one of the few avenues left, the Reichswehr, in 1928. Now a member of the 3rd Cavalry Division stationed in Wiemar, he was slowly promoted through the ranks as an NCO. Through his 7 years of exercise and training, his strict disciplinary record and demeanour helped catch the eyes of the officers above. By now though, times were changing. The new Nazi regime began to develop Germany's armoured forces and Dietrich was eagerly transferred to the newly formed 2nd Panzer Division in Würzburg, gaining new experiences with their Panzers.

Taking part in the Anschluss, the invasion of Poland and the invasion of France as a tank commander, Dietrich quickly found his passion in warfare and tank commanding and was finally given the command of his own platoon during the 2nd's occupation duties of Poland after the Battle of France. Truth be told, he disliked what he saw as a "dull and uninteresting posting", secretly desiring to fight in combat again. As it seemed, his wish was about to be answered. Personnel were needed for a new division, the 17th, which was being drawn from the Bavarian and Austrian troops of the 2nd. Now part of this formation, the chance to command his platoon in combat fills Dietrich with an eager yet serene joy.

Equipment:
Platoon Vehicles
5x Panzer III Ausf. J - 25 Crewmen

Platoon Crew Equipment
5x Bracket-mounted MP40s (Tank commanders)
25x Walther P38 (Crew sidearm)

Vehicle: Panzer III Ausf. J

RP Example:
To the tired and weary troops watching on the frontlines that afternoon, it felt like the war was never ending. Hundreds of thousands of lives had been lost, damage to economies and cities was severe and a whole generation was changed forever. But today, the guns went finally silent. There was no more futile offensives and no more desperate defenses. The second war between the states was finally over.

Rumours of the war's end found it's way through the lines. Exhausted troops who had spent the last 24 hours in almost non-stop combat to repel Southern attacks could hardly believe their ears. Cheers sounded out along the trenches and helmets thrown far into the air as a sign of peace. The many wounded rejoiced in the field hospitals, glad that no more fellow soldiers would join them.

Later that day, the first groups of Southern soldiers appeared and unlike the brutal previous days, they were not met with a torrent of gunfire. Instead, Central American troops left their trenches and defensive positions and met their counterparts not as enemies but as friends. Along the frontline, Central and Southern troops gathered to celebrate the end of the war. Photos and stories were swapped and silent moments were held to remember lost friends. These men weren't just fellow humans but fellow Americans and they were united together as one nation again.

As street parties broke out in neighbourhoods across America, The President made his official announcement from Washingto, stepping forward to the podium. His tired eyes were now relaxed and relieved after a sleepless night of negotiations in the next room. "My fellow Americans, today my signature and that of my counterpart, President Clare, was written upon a treaty. A treaty that sought an end to this conflict. An end to the bloodshed that has stained our great nation."

"Therefore, I am here to announce that the Central States will be reunified with the Southern States, bringing this great country together once more. The impending arrival of Canadian forces in the north forced the signing of this treaty and for that I have no regrets. The war needed a conclusion at any costs and I am glad it eventually came."

"I will not deny that there is a hard road ahead. The war has almost completely devastated the economy of both our region and the South and the rebuilding process will take sometime. But most of all, I want to pay tribute to all those who perished, regardless of side as they will be the most sorely missed."

"So, through cooperation with local volunteers and the families of those who gave their lives, I have put in place plans to gather the remains of the many thousands who were killed in the fierce fighting during the "Battle of the Roanoke Line", where mass casualties and poor conditions meant that many of the dead were not recovered or simply buried on the battlefield. I further propose the construction of two memorials, one on each side of the former "border" with accompanying cemeteries to honour the dead. I hope to be able to discuss with President Clare further in order to also encourage similar action in the South and to return the wounded and captured Southern soldiers currently still in Central America."

It’s on the OP at the bottom, the standard platoon template.

How fascinating, let's see where this goes, if indeed it goes anywhere.

Character Application
Name: Werner Raus
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: German
Rank: Leutnant
Unit: 1st Bttn/1st Inf Rgt (Mot)/29th Inf Div - 3rd Plt/1st Coy
Skills:
  • Rapid Attacker - Via a mix of good radios and intelligent runners, Werner's platoon has forged a methodology of synchronised attack enabling them to come out of the gates much quicker than other formations.
  • Skilled Soldiers - Veteran? No. Trained? Certainly. Extensive pre-war training exercises have provisioned Werner's platoon with the discipline and skills necessary to function as a well-oiled machine of destructive force.
Image

Personality: The typical qualities one might find in a professional soldier have been present in Werner Raus since he was but a little boy - discipline, courage, intelligence, modesty, attention to detail, a self-sacrificial attitude. All these and more gave him a decent head-start amongst the trainees at his home Wehrkreis. Werner is generally a quiet type, awful at small talk and typically speaking only when spoken to or when outright forced to do so by circumstances. Not at all charismatic, he finds social situations to be more difficult than professional moments, perhaps due in great part to the early life trauma he suffered with the death of his parents. Imbibing copious quantities of alcohol has an interesting "loosening" effect, however. A great deal of reading, as a hobby, has bestowed him with a certain intellect as well as an eye for decent literature, and he can often be found flicking through his campaign books such as Vom Kriege and Kunst Des Krieges. While he is not particularly athletic, Werner enjoys a spot of football (soccer) as much as his Britannic enemy across the Channel.

History: Born in 1916 to a librarian and history teacher in a rather ram-shack little maternity wing of a Weimar hospital, Werner became knowledgeable in the military arts almost from his first moments in the world. Fate was to be cruel towards him; he was orphaned six years into his life as his parents were fatally wounded by an anarchist bombing in the chaotic post-war revolutionary troubles. He was thence taken into the care of an uncle who had survived the First World War only due to an amputation to remove a gangrene-afflicted limb (and thereafter been honourably discharged). Though he had some sympathy for the boy, Uncle Max was hard on Werner, impressing upon him lesson after lesson in discipline and responsibility, forcing him to work even in the long summer days and nights while what few friends he had enjoyed their holidays to the north-west coast and metropolitan Berlin.

Werner attended a technical college when he was 16, taking classes in electrical engineering with the intention of being an electrician, only for Uncle Max to intervene after passing his final examinations, shortly after his eighteenth birthday, and proclaim an ultimatum: he would sign up to the Reichsheer immediately or he would be disowned and given no money to start his own electronic repair business. Werner, incensed, intially refused. He was soon talked into it by one of his parents' old friends, who had since become something of a mentor, and figured he'd do one short tour of duty then be back home before he knew it. It was, like most things for most people, not how he imagined it was going to be.

Mere months after passing the infantry school at Wehrkreis IX in Kassel, the entire Germany Army was transformed by a group of new politicians who styled themselves the Nazi Party, led by one Adolf Hitler. Werner had never been interested in politics, and he gave not so much as a passing thought to the many Sturmabteilung recruitment posters prominently dotted around the Wehrkreis, however the transformation instilled some bizarre nationalistic belief in him that threatened to annihilate the emotional confusion he'd felt ever since the loss of his parents. The Germany Army was rebuilt in a matter of weeks and, under new guidance, re-learned the offensive art of war. Unfortunately his lack of enthusiasm for the Nazis (and indeed his outright contempt at Nazi interference in army affairs) meant he would inevitably end up crossing someone on the opposite end of the scale, and that someone ensured Werner would not be promoted or given a command until many years later, after the invasion of France.

Even after finally obtaining a platoon command, the newly-minted Leutnant would remain relegated to garrison duty on the coast of France. This only changed with the beginning of planning for Case Barbarossa, when he was transferred to another platoon in the 29th Infanterie-Division and undertook extensive platoon training, including rapid assault combat and live-fire exercises, before finally seeing action upon the initiation of the war against the Soviet Union, whereupon all notions of his civilian dreams were forgotten amidst the raw thrill of combat.
