I'm wroking on my post now.

Given that my battalion are Dagomor natives, is there any complaint for me to have them already quartered, or would you prefer that I be mustering them?

I'd also expect that he keeps his primary residence in Halgomar as a matter of course, so he's going to either covertly or overtly push to billet himself, or at least his lieutenants, in his own residence. As much for comfort as to give him some distance from the personal scrutiny of the Colonel.

Oh yeah, no problem if they were already quartered. And staying in his own residence won't be a problem. We are mostly gentlemen, after all.

Mostly.

Captain App
Image

Character Name: Philippe Gounelle
Age: 28
Appearance:
Standing at just 5’4”, Philippe is not at all an imposing man. Stocky, his swarthy skin contrasts a good bit with dark hair and waxed moustache, kept long and thin in the traditional Garronese fashion. His hair is forever kept short and combed, the hallmark of a good nobleman. He lacks a good deal of the nominal scars that would be present on field officers, especially for a higher-ranking one on the frontlines.
Strengths:
    Sensing
The Captain possesses a greater ability than most his age in the summing-up of the battlefield picture, in deciding his actions. His experiences in the past have given the man a degree of capability in these factors, especially in regards to fighting irregular enemies, and Philippe is a great proponent of the idea in “Kill the heart” rather than fighting pointless battles in the fields and steppes. He is furthermore far more able to withstand the rigors of war than many, his time in Farmasire being a learning experience the man will never forget. To sit in the middle of square with cavalry pouring in is not something that sits easily in the mind.

    Learned
As would be expected from a son of nobility, Philippe can place his opinion on varied and expansive subjects. He knows much on the world, much on the colonies, and is well-able to articulate his views on said matters of life. Statecraft and aristocracy is another factor which he knows a good deal about.
Weaknesses:
    None To The Rear:
Philippe is miserably disconnected with the rest of the Officer Cadre, even with the general Army command, and due to the factors of how he came to command will most likely be sent to the direct front where death is an expected factor. He is distinctly aware of this fact, it even coming to the point wherein resupply has been impossible and the Captain has been forced to pay for rations out of his own pocket, something that is no such massive thing due to his family wealth yet still more than a little annoying. Reinforcement is, in his mind, doubtful at all times and other Officers are at best allies, at worst hidden enemies.

    The Colours Stand
Retreat is never an option to the 709th, his view being that they will never break and the enemy will lose their spirit far sooner than the unit will lose their men. As such, courageous last stands will likely never be viewed as such, instead seen as courageous stands of the men and that being the end of it. The back is not against the wall when the mind makes a wall there instead.

    Foreigner Emplaced
As a personal loner, Philippe is a man for whom the crowds at oceans, anyone is a shark, and the only friends are within the 709th. As such, making friends on anything save for a personal level is exceedingly difficult for him, straining command structure relations. He finds most Dallic Army Officers to be potential assassins and, as such, is a man who watches the rear just as much as the front. The idea that they might be lurking anywhere, they might be anyone, is something often in his mind.

    All Together
Due to nationalistic ideals, the Captain is extremely willing to put himself on the line to defend his men. Trumped-up charges are challenged at every turn, the man more likely to believe a Private in the 709th than a Dallic General’s word. He places unconscientious faith in his men with little regard.
Personality:
Possessing far more of the highborne characteristics as his station would otherwise suggest, Philippe is a man of refined tastes. While he has known the battlefield, known war and the sound of cannon, the marching drum and fife, he’s also been well-acquainted with libraries and parties of the white whig sort. Educated in a rather different fashion, he’s able to place his opinion on many a varied subject from fine woods to fine wine, to how to properly cook a steak to the intricacies of Ancient Garronese Architecture, though that’s really only if you ever could get him to talk. The man is quiet, calm, and rarely raises his voice save for barking orders to the troops, a product of his birth and otherwise isolation by the Officer Cadre of the Dallic Army. In regards to his command style, Philippe commands from the front and from the trenches, well-used to having to use his pistol to dispatch any who would get too close.
Biography:
Born to one of the great many colonial regions, Garrron, that had recently come under conquest, Philippe’s family was one of minor nobility within that region. His father had fought in the war and indeed there have been rumors of the young man going-off with a musket to fight with family against the invaders, though despite any sort of efforts made the region soundly came under heel. His father tried for treason, the young man stayed at home for some time, taking care of his family’s assets as his eldest brother settled into the position. The precise reasons as to why the young man joined the Army are unknown, though what is known is that he practically bought his commission by bringing with him a fully equipped Battalion, all of his own origin, and all damned fine soldiers.

Already under intense scrutiny, Captain Gounelle was placed in Farmasire, one of the rebellious provinces in Dallia to her south that had come under a bad case of religious fervor, and was placed there with a Dallic Army ‘advisor’. Officially the man was there to ensure that there was adequate diplomacy with the locals, to ensure that the young Captain didn’t do anything overtly stupid. Unofficially he was there to ensure the young Captain died a most heroic and untimely death. To state that he wasn’t to be trusted was to state the obvious, at least at that time. First acting as a garrison force, the 709th would be deployed in the town of Prio, a mountainous region that lent itself to deadly ambushes amongst the crags. Despite whatever casualties taken, however, line was often formed and line was often kept. The ranks never did break, the soldiers never did run, and their accurate fire dissuaded many a fight before it even happened.

Finding this to be inadequate, the treacherous advisor began to make faith with the rebel locals, bringing them information on the movements of the Battalion and essentially betraying their position. He ordered that a cavalry charge would break the 709th’s spirit, that once that would happen some mistake or another would occur and the Captain would be oh so heartbreakingly murdered. The plan set, on one morning march the unit came under attack from snipers along the crags. As was normal, they formed line and that, at that moment, was when the cavalry began their charge down the road. The advisor did not ‘notice’ or mention such a thing, though a yell from the rear brought Captain Gounelle’s attention there. Stationing skirmishers to the front in order to keep the snipers off, the troops rapidly formed square, rapidly to the point wherein many a normal Dallic Army Battalion would not have made it in time. Thus was the small bit of land turned into a grinder, the 709th never breaking, never running, yet the enemy doing so instead. When the smoke and fire cleared, all that were left were dead bodies about the group and ten men dead for their trouble.

Later that month, the “Fous à la Guerre” would march on the enemy camp, driving them out while using accurate cannon fire from a nearby unit in order to box them in. Rebels being rebels, they did not charge into the cannon fire and instead made their move against the line of heavy infantry to their front, charging-in with the intent to sheath bayonets in foreign throats. Holding their fire, the 709th delivered a great massive volley into the bastards, only three left standing following whom were swiftly executed where they sat on their knees, begging for mercy. For this battle, they were named by many as brutal executors of the Dallic Empire’s will, as men who were very truly willing to place what was theirs on the line for what was not. The advisor would attempt to keep his attempts hidden following the incident, though a month later while in transit to their next posting one Lieutenant would find the documents stating such actions. Passed along to the Captain, the advisor met an untimely death by drowning in a fast river while bathing, it was said, an unfortunate accident for them all.

    Image
The 907th would thereafter be posted in a far more peaceful town, general Army command finding that placing such troops of a foreign nature on the battlefield, ones who were so very capable, would lead to them gaining only some bit of fame and fortune among the dead. As there were no massive enemies at the time to go to war against to throw the Battalion against to break them and simply disbanding them on the whole was unacceptable towards many number-pushing Generals, it was instead chosen to let them rot. During that period the 907th drilled and marched often, becoming to a degree a staple of novelty for the town and yet never recruiting from the local populace. Garronese were always the preferred and only acceptable personnel for the Battalion, native or immigrant, and the 907th only ever did their own recruiting and their own training.

With the beginning of this new war, however, the 907th have been restarted on the path to war.

Battalion app
Battalion name: 709th Heavy Infantry Battalion “Fous à la Guerre”
Unit type: Heavy Line Infantry
Uniform: Here
Marching song: Le Boudin
Standard gear:
The standard 709th soldier is armed with a Garronese musket, normally of heavier shot and therefore heavier mechanism, along with the spike bayonet that such a musket would come with. These troops are often supplemented on their own terms by some form of long blade or another ranging in size from a standard knife to a dirk, though such weapons are rarely, if ever, used in line combat. For Sergeants and other NCOs a carbine of similar shot is issued-out, though otherwise they are armed much the same. In terms of the officers a short sword, thick in lieu of the slender dueling swords often used, is issued-out. Like an artilleryman’s weapon, these swords could often be mocked for being just a little bit out of place yet there is no denying their ability to chop-off a limb. Pistols are otherwise issued.

Breastplates are worn by thes infantry units over their padded jackets and the like in order to protect from stray shot and shrapnel, along with the distinctive red puffed-up trousers of the Garronese. Boots and wrappings are utilized by the 709th along with thick woolen socks. The red cap is also worn, lending the units a distinct and foreign appearance compared to standard line infantry.

Description:
As far as the Dallic Army is concerned, the 709th are an extremely new unit compared to her sisters. As far as the Garronese are concerned, the 709th can trace lineage back to the earliest years of their independence as a culture, holding a reputation of strict discipline in the face of otherwise impossible odds. To some they are simply a remarkably strong unit, to others the 709th hold a nearly mythical status. Their traditions are old and well-kept, their soldiers among the best as far as holding-out, and their accuracy well-capable.
1st Company Lieutenant: Bastien Auguste

I've been out for a few days but I shall begin first with my captain's observations on his fellow officers, I should be able to get my starting post out in another day.

Journal Captain Altan Jalair, Jalair Jezzails

I set forth now into a new and unknown land, with three hundred of my compatriots at my back. All things considered, I think we will do well for ourselves. We a people of the horse with no horses, but with courage, we will find our destiny in this army. I write these memoirs down such that when we return to Altai, we may be judged by our ancestors, the high lords, and by our brothers. Gods willing, they will recognize our commitment, steel, and resolve. Gods willing, we can be the new generation of great men to come from Altai.

Standing alongside us in Dangomor are a number of captains of great deeds and accomplishments. I consider myself but a humble amateur in comparison, but not that I would ever let them know! Some men got to where they are by virtue of their experience with a sword, but who is to say that my luck with a coin is no less of an indicator that I am worthy to be a captain of men? I pray that they look upon me and see instead a shining example of Altai in its prime. Just we call our homeland Altai, the Golden City, I am Altan, a golden son of Clan Jalair. The boy who cowered under the whip of the shop master, the boy who made a living by dusting the grime off the feet of brigands, that boy should be forgotten.

To take stock of the men who will be my new comrades in arms:

Colonel Horatius Fellus: The colonel reminds me of the Dallic priests of the Canon who provided my schooling. A warm and happy fellow, so long as you aren't caught with a drink in your hands! I cannot fault him for the way he behaves. I can't say the colonel would very much approve of my love of luxury, but this is a man I can work with. That's one thing I appreciate about religious individuals. So long as I say my prayers and keep my men's antics to a respectable minimum, then our affairs will be in order. The colonel doesn't seem to be a fighting man, but with so many battalions being brought into the regiment, I would be more worried about competition to get our own fair share of fighting!

All the colonel has to do is make sure the pay and provisions flow to our men smoothly, and any action we're likely to see will take care of itself. After all, some of my steppe boys were rebels themselves not so long ago! As the colonel himself has said, Dangomor will be a good time to work on some hobbies.

Captain Virgil Jean Louis Philippe Montbeliard de Hohenfriedberg, 1st Death's Head Hussars: Honestly, this young man lives a life that I envy. Parties, women, and noble status. Should a life of debauchery ever tire him, what awaits is an equally cozy life as the master of a noble house. I don't know how I shall ever look him in the eye. I'm supposed to be the dashing horse lord! It's true that we both enjoy the finer things in life, but the difference between us is that he can actually afford it all! I'm not sure if I should admire him, or hate him for representing the aristocratic class that I'm striving to overtake back home. As long as he treats me with due respect, then we will be fine.

Captain Ebenezer Paschalis, West Pfeiffer Imperial Carbineers: This man seems like the real deal. His record says everything alone. I've seen men return from the harder stretches of the Spice Road stumble into my tavern back in Altai with a similar look. The difference is that those men usually find themselves revived after a cool drink and a few nights of rest. This man looks permanently damaged. If I'm clever about how I manage my battalion's terms of enlistment, then we will make it through without being put through the meat grinder as this man has. If he is any indication of what kind of man I will turn into if I stay in the service of the Empire for too long, then I'd best keep the wine close by.

Captain Hugh Lawson Clay, Wolves of Iron: He has the personality of a brick wall but much like the brick wall, I don't see anyone getting past him. He is the model example of the junior officer corps that has allowed the Dallic Empire to conquer so many. Normally I'd have no complaints about being stationed with a man of duty, but seeing as I shall have to rely on the company of my fellow officers for gods know how long, I cannot help but feel my heart sink a little. Time will tell, but I have a sneaking suspicion winning his respect will have to take more than a few well-placed compliments and some bonding over a good bottle of beer. If I chance across a fine horse, I will take note to use it as a gift for Captain Clay. Men who have few words for other men often find it easier to communicate with animals.

Captain Cibor Marczynski, Cybulskan Volunteers "The Blackfeet" : About as pleasant as a pouch of ten-year-old fermented horse milk, but with just about as much bite. I can sympathize with where this man has come from. Like him, I didn't have much growing up, and like him, we fight not out of love for the Dallics, but because it presents the only way forward out of the lives that we led. His men fight in a similar fashion as well. The Cybulskan Long Rifle holds some similarities to the long-barred Jezzail, and our battalions share a common lack of respect for ordered Dallic drill. Still, whereas we hold proud civilizational aspirations, the Cybulskans really just want to be left alone in peace. Not that this was altogether a bad thing. A man with no higher ambitions beyond his rank will make for a dependable companion.

Captain Alastair Strachan, Crask Highlanders: I am no stranger to men wearing tunics, but I must admit I am rather unaccustomed to seeing men who wear tunics that end so short! If the Crask Highlanders were a company of women, then they would make for a much more pleasant sight for the eyes! Slinging insults aside, I do pity them. If ever I had any intention of rebelling against the Dallic Empire, then seeing the Highlanders stomp across the world fighting someone else's war has quickly put an end to that thought. I respect their dedication to their homeland and their bravery, but as they say in Altai, sometimes the deadliest arrow is the one fired while in retreat. I should only hope that in their quest to return home, Captain Strachan does not inadvertently sabotage our own quest to return home one day.

Captain Valentin Rosicrucio de Dangomor, Valentin's Volunteers "Native Scouts Battalion": When I first heard of this man's story, I confess that I wanted to smack him over the head. Foolish boy! If only you knew what others would do to be born into a position like yours. Still, as I begin to calm down I must respect the fact that he would rather work to build a life for himself with his own two hands than to simply accept the inheritance of his forefathers. I only pray that he does not regret that decision if he must explain to his sons why they were denied the inheritance that would also have been rightfully theirs. I can't complain about his troops, however. Gods willing, what better way to put down a rebellion than to make the rebels fight their own people? Saves us the trouble of risking our own skins.

Captain James Augustus Rupert Carlington, Carlington County's Imperial Cuirassiers: In a different circumstance, Captain Carlington would make for a good drinking partner. In their current circumstance, however, I can't see anything but trouble coming from this cavalry captain. What I would do if I had horses like theirs! Give me a horse as fine as those cuirassiers, and I could take the Imperial capital by myself! I confess I'm no stranger to drink and certainly enjoy a good party. Yet to manage a battalion of cavalry is one of the most difficult responsibilities out there. Not only must you respect your men, but you must also take care of the horses - whose lives are probably more valuable than the men!

Captain Kasch "Leśnik" Fletcher, 44th Fletcher's Farmers: A tough and battle-tested battalion. Given the state of many other units, and their leadership, it makes me feel more reassured that we have men like Fletcher and Clay who will be used to carrying out the gruntwork. It is all well and good to have well trained and well bred nobles lead the forefront, but even the most precious arrowhead needs a dependable shaft to shoot true.

Captain Samadou Diop, Chandakot Janissaries, the "Spinning Jennies": I've never quite seen a woman like Captain Diop, but I know better than to say anything out loud. I was raised only by my mother, and on her day she could unhorse any man with a shot from her bow and arrow. It is, and always has been a man's world, and for Chandakot to have continued to persevere with their social system, then they must know how to fight, and fight well. Altai was once in a similar position to Chandakot, but whereas Altai was ultimately defeated on the battlefield, Chandakot achieved a negotiated peace. If only we had been as clever! I look forward to finding out what sort of trade goods they produce in Chandakot. It is no secret I plan to return home one day to seize upon higher ambitions. Building up a larger business network now could yield massive dividends later.

Captain Klaus Adler, Erika's Jagers: Another stand up fellow with a hardened and experienced fighting battalion. Like many other light infantry units in the regiment, they are not blessed with excellent discipline. Against the hill peoples, however, I might dare wager that we have enough guns, and enough steel to make it irrelevant. Most of the other captains are probably expecting the Jalair Jezzails to match the Dangomori in fierocity, but in truth, my own eyes are pointed towards seeing how effective Dallic light infantry will be on the field of battle.

It's all right. I do look forward to Fletcher, though, the man seems really rather interesting.

Also, Absolon-7, I expect a rivalry to develop between the 709th and the Wolves of Iron.

Summer heat is disgusting, get better soon!

Also I think I saw a post somewhere about OP going on vacation for a week, so we might be inactive until next week unless somebody else starts posting in the IC.

That makes us two regiments of savages with swords and axes!

On another note, I had a bout of near heat exhaustion just this past weekend as well! This stuff is serious!

For those who are interested: the empire has a very unique way of counting years. It is comparable to what the Romans used, in that they name their years after the people in charge. However, since there is not one leader, and each prince instead runs a ministry, each ministry has a year count based on their own prince. Prince Halvast III has been Lord of War for the last 19 years, so this is the 20th year of the Lordship of Prince Halvast III. For the navy, this is the Year 2 of the Ladyship of Maliana, and every ministry has its own count. Locally, people just use whatever count they used before their conquest.
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

I'm glad we can teach rapid basic mathematical skills to the upper populace through having to convert literally all the times.

In other news, does anyone have IC opinions on Garron / 709th?

Seems like it's basically the same culture of Virgil and his Hohenfriedberg Riders (that being somewhat French-esque). So Virgil could be from an old royal family of that country that now serves the Dallic Empire as Dukes, having come over centuries before when they were overthrown in a rebellion and their major supporters followed. So perhaps Virgil and your Philippe (and their respective battalions) could actually become quite good friends - or the worst of enemies.

Ooooh jeez Virgil might know the little secret people like to not mention about the 709th. Overall our Battalions are rather differents on the extreme, the Fous à la Guerre being overall solid soldiers who don't rape, pillage, or otherwise make massive trouble for themselves and the Death's Head Hussars essentially being swashbucklers. They just might become good friends.

Captain App
Character Name: Eliza de la Vista
Age: 28
Appearance:
Image

Strengths:
-Martial Trained : Eliza is well-trained in the arts of melee combat, both hand-to-hand and with weapons of refined arts like rapier and sword of the official arms of the Empire. A skill she renowned and respected for.
-Financially Trained : Being the sole remaining child of the Vista family and heiress to the Vista bloodline with a strong tradition in mercantile, she has the mercantile training needed. She becomes quite good at handling the financial management.
-Charismatic : The art of being a noblewoman. Charismatic, charming many of her battalion's all-female unit to loyalty and to zeal to the empire, as well as many others.
-Progressive Figure : How many times you've seen a noblewoman who has the charisma, who is also in military, and a captain in itself? This is a strength that she has...
Weaknesses:
-Sole Heiress, Maximum Safety : As she is the sole remaining child and ALSO the sole heiress of the Vista bloodline and family, her safety is number one per the order of her father. And while she manages to be a captain, she has never felt the experience of a battlefield due to kept safe by her father. And even then, this latest assignment was due to her own's insistence to be given one assignment, to which her father gave to this part of the empire.
-She's a Woman : A noblewoman, a captain, a leader of her own battalion? Unacceptable...if she's not a noble and a heiress. Many conservative views disliked her because of her three status in the military and she experienced her fair share of sexism. Just don't expect her to be very friendly with the men of the military. Also, her opinions are not to be acceptable to her superior or to her fellow captains, sometimes.
-Status of Relationship : It doesn't help that by this point she's unmarried. While her father allows her to be still in the military albeit in desk duty/academic duty in-marriage, she has never been approached by one or approach someone. Rumors circulated in closed circles that she keeps someone with her, a lover, whom is not a man and whom is a very controversial topic.
-Progressive Figure : ...but also as a weakness, since it means while she's being seen as a progressive figure in the military, it didn't do well with the conservatives.

Personality: Charming, brave, and respectful of others, she carries a sense of duty and personal respect to others. Very career-oriented officer, despite her gender. Has given thought of marrying to a man and gives child, but remained focus to her duty and assignments. Deep down, however, she has a severe case of duty as a heiress.

Biography:

Born in Morzetown, which despite its name, is not a town. A trading city known for both its trading goods from all across the empire and the ruling of the Vista family, a nobility family of mercantile sector. The head noble, Duke Fernando de la Vista, have two children by then. His wife expected the third child, a daughter. When she was born, it was a joy for the family. Eliza was thus not given the weight as a heir to the family though she was the most doted child, being the youngest. She enjoyed the education given to her and despite the conservative period, insisted on doing things such as learning the financial trait of Vista bloodline and using sword. At first, it wasn't given much thought, though her father and mother quite accepting of her hobbies. By the time she was 20, however, a tragedy stroke the family. Her eldest brother and her second eldest brother turned their bloodline relationship into a rivalry, one of which resulted in the death of her eldest brother through poisoning and the jailing of her second eldest brother because of what he did.

To make matters worse, Eliza already joined the military, into the Walkuchi Military Academy, located in Walkuchi, a province known for its strong tradition in the combat, though they lacked resources to be large city they are renowned enough to established a military academy, one that opens to men and women. The city itself is less conservative than most cities in the empire. Eliza gained the favor of her father back then, so her conservative mother was quite angry when she found out. When the news reached to Eliza, she was shaken, but tried to remain focused. Her father solidified the internal condition of his family and the condition of the city in general, but given that he himself was shaken as well by the tragedy, he really put the safety of her daughter to the maximum, while also put a condition that she will retired on the age of 30 or 31, lest she can finds someone in the military to court her.

She spent the next years in training as well as garrison assignments. She resigned to the fate that she would not be given a heavier task nor assignment, but at least she got a garrison assignment once in a while. Her latest assignment, which may or may not be the last, despite her second eldest brother being released from the jail and assumed the financial position (he was still despised by some, but no alternative from the heir/heiress of Vista for now to lead the family), is an assignment in Dangomor. And her own battalion, which she hand-picked through selecting the women enlistees and lower-ranked officers, nobles and commoners alike.

Battalion app
Battalion name: Eliza's Imperial Infantry
Unit type: Line Infantry
Uniform: Blue military uniform of 18th century, a pair of women-fitted military pants, and boots.
Banner: Image
Marching song: March Song
Standard gear: Charleville musket with bayonet, standard military swords, with flintlock pistols as sidearms. Knives, standard military sleeping kit.
Unit Statistics:
Discipline: Image
Morale: Image
Fire rate: Image
Accuracy: Image
Melee: Image
Marching speed: Image
Self-sufficiency (Survival): Image
Description: Eliza's Battalion is composed of a mix of noble-born women and commoner-born women. Most of them are rather below-average in terms of musket use in fire rate and accuracy. Discipline and morally-wise, they are average. Decently disciplined and morale-wise. If there is something to be renowned for is their excellent use in melee. Not being a light infantry but rather a line infantry, this skill would be useful if they were forced to fight close hands. Melee excellence came from the personal trainings given by Eliza and her officers, composed of selected noblewomen who have better melee trainings.

I hope the governor has enough seats at the table for all the hungry captains! I also hope that I will also be able to spread the appreciation for fermented horse milk across to all of my other fellow officers present.
