The Lions of Rojava (OOC/Open/War)

Postby Dayganistan » Sat Jul 07, 2018 6:06 pm

The year is 2014. The Syrian Civil War has been going on for years. The Assad regime appears to be on the back foot. The conflict has spilled over into Iraq. The Kurds have carved out a de facto state for themselves in northern Syria. The opposition fragments, spawning the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. ISIS launches a lighting offensive into Iraq, catching the Iraqi army off guard and seizing billions of dollars in military equipment as the Iraqi army simply abandons their positions, refusing to fight. The atrocities of ISIS spread around the world as the group releases propaganda videos with extremely high production quality, showing them performing brutal attacks on and executions of Iraqi civilians and military personnel in full high definition. Pressure grows in western countries for something to be done about ISIS. Some people refuse to wait for something to be done, and travel to Syria and Iraq to fight against ISIS themselves. With Iraq in disarray, ISIS turns their attention to Syria.

Our story starts in northern Syria (or Rojava if you ask the locals) in the summer of 2014. This is Kurdish territory, with the Kurds in the process of carving out a de facto state amidst the chaos of war. The Kurds and the Assad regime are in a state of cease fire, both sides finding common enemies in Al-Nusra and ISIS. After overrunning Iraq and seizing all sorts of high end American weapons from the Iraqi army, ISIS shifts their focus to Syria. With the Assad regime rapidly losing territory and controlling only a small amount of the country, the focus is on eliminating the Syrian Democratic Forces, a collection of Kurdish, Arab and Assyrian militias in northern Syria, lead by the Kurdish YPG and YPJ. The Kurds, their allies, and the foreign fighters who have come to join them are now about to be backed up against the wall as ISIS sets their sights on the city of Kobani, a Kurdish city right on the border with Turkey. With nowhere to retreat, you will either repel the invaders or die trying. Maybe one day you can push them back and take the fight to Raqqa. But for today, all you and your mixed group of local and foreign fighters can do is survive.

ABOUT
This is a semi-realistic RP, set during the Syrian Civil War. You will take the role of either a Kurdish fighter or a foreign volunteer who came to help the Kurds in their struggle against the Islamic State. The RP will follow real events to an extent, starting from the Battle of Kobani in 2014. However, all characters and player actions will be fictional and some fictional battles may be created for narrative purposes. This RP was created as somewhat of a departure from the war and military RPs typically found on P2TM, which tend to focus on elite special forces and other highly skilled warfighters. Instead, the focus is on guerilla fighters, a few of which may have had formal military training in the past but are mostly inexperienced and learning how to fight on the battlefield with minimal training beforehand.

RULES
Don't start dumb OOC arguments and just generally be respectful of your fellow RPers. Bigotry, racism, etc will not be tolerated in the OOC thread.
I understand the Syrian Civil War is a sensitive topic for some and some people have very strong views about the conflict. So if you find something about this RP offensive, I'm going to ask you to leave it to yourself. Do not come into this thread simply to argue.
In character actions should be somewhat realistic. While artistic liberty is fine, godmodding is not. This isn't intended to be a simulation of military life, but it's also not Call of Duty either. Feel free to dictate kills your characters gets as long as you're not single handedly killing battaltions and feel free to RP capturing enemy weapons as you wish.
OP/co-OP rulings are final.

Character Application
Name: Ariya Mahmoud
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Nationality: Kurdish
Appearance:
Image

Strengths: Speaks Kurdish and Arabic fluently, English and French at an advanced level, slightly above average accuracy when shooting
Weaknesses: Inexperience in a commanding role, no formal military training, poor vision without glasses
Weapons: M16A2, Browning Hi-Power, 2x RGD-5 frag grenades
Personal Items: Samsung Galaxy S3, radio, flashlight, two packs of chewing gum, various books
Bio: Ariya was born in Kobani in 1990 to a Kurdish family. She was the youngest of 4 children. Her early life was relatively uneventful, although as the youngest and as a girl she had to try a little harder for the attention and approval of her parents. To this end, she decided her best chance was to do well in school. She started to try especially hard in the English and French classes that were mandatory in Syrian schools at the time, understanding the importance of having knowledge of major international languages relatively early. She thought it would help her get into a good university, but at some time in the distant future her knowledge of these languages would be useful in a far different way than she had ever imagined.

After completing school she went to university in Aleppo, where she studied history with the hopes of later being able to do a master's degree in Europe, the United States, or Canada. Regardless of how well she would do, however, her university career would be cut short by the start of the Syrian Civil War. With fighting breaking out in several districts of Aleppo, Ariya decided it was time to return home, where at the moment it was still relatively peaceful. She thought this would all blow over in a year at the most and she'd be able to go back to university, but soon the seemingly endless Syrian conflict would spread to the Kurdish regions of the country.

At first, she avoided joining the YPG. Initially they were in conflict with the Syrian regime and she didn't want to contribute to prolonging the war. Eventually the government would be driven out of the region but a new problem would take their place as many Arab rebel groups in the regions started to become radicalized, pledging their allegiance to Al Qaeda and ISIS, and deciding to turn on the Kurds. With Kobani likely to be a target for the jihadists, Ariya finally decided it was time to join the YPG.

Currently, she's been with the YPG for a few months. She's seen some combat trying to hold back the jihadists but has mostly been fighting in losing battles. More recently, she's been given a new task. As the atrocities of ISIS became known to the world, volunteers from around the world have flocked to Syria in order to join the YPG and fight against ISIS. With Ariya's knowledge of foreign languages, she was chosen to be the commander of a unit made up of both foreign volunteers and Kurds. She was unsure why they would choose her as the commander rather than have her be a translator for someone with more experience, but she didn't feel too much of a need to question it. After a very brief course on tactics, she's now somewhat ready to lead her band of Kurdish militia and foreign volunteers into battle.

Character Application
Name: Augustyn "Rohat" Rodziewiczównski
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Nationality: Polish
Appearance:
Image

Strengths: Augustyn has nothing that particularly stands out from anyone else. While he can make little drawing to help nudge up moral he has no discernable skill set for combat. He can at the very least hold a small conversation as he shows a grasp of the language on par with a 3-5 year old with vocabulary geared for military use almost exclusively.
Weaknesses: His understanding of how to fight is mostly theoretical. While he has fired rifles before he only has a vague idea of how to act as a soldier, nothing close to par tidal experiance. He was lucky enough
Weapons: Personal Items:
  • knock off Aviator Sunglasses
  • watch
  • pack of cigarettes
  • Zippo lighter
Bio: Augustyn was born in Żnin to Jan-Paweł and Małgorzata in 1989. His early life was fairly regular, his dad worked as a labourer and his mother was an nurse. His life was all around boring and average from the perspective of anyone looking in on it. However behind closed doors the family had its issues. His father would on occasion become physical with his mother and as a boy he was never in a position to stop these episodes of rage. He grew up in the church, loved it really. He would go with his father and mother to Kościół Rzymskokatolicki Cathedral where he would sing and enjoy getting away from home for awhile.

Upon entering secondary school his instead abilities started to surface. He was a gifted artist, very good with paint, he worked better with landscapes than he did anything else. He particularly loved painting snow. As he grew older, and his skill increased he began to seriously consiter doing this as a career. He eventually attended the Acadamy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. It was here he started to evolve how he painted, he kept his preference for the snow and started to mix in abstract humanoid figures reminiscent of Francis Bacon and Zdzisław Beksiński. He would graduate in 2011. He immediately started to paint and attempt to sell his work, his style still evolving and intrest shifting, after watching the news as the wars in the middle east intensified he started to shift his white snow for tan sand as his works grew.

After school it became apparent that he was in no place to profit off of his art. He lived in a small basement apartment for a few hundred zlotys a month in Warsaw while he taught the extreme basics to small children in primary school. His art floundered and his depression grew, his cynical an defeatist attitude was only exacerbated as he continued to watch the news, his focus on the Syrian civil war, which he had already painted about in detail. As the situation in the area seemed to be getting more dire for those he saw as the good guys, he was even more terrified at the prospect of a new caliphate. In mid 2013 he picked up Infantry Attacks by Erwin Rommel and an old Polish military field manual on infantry tactics. He also started to frequent the PM Shooter gun range. He would frequently rent AKM's and AR-15's to shoot multiple times a week. Eventually he made contact with a Turkish recruiter for the YPG through sites dedicated to learning other languages. He studied Kurmanji Kurdish for a few weeks and adopted the nom de guerre of "Rohat" before getting on a flight from Warsaw to Istanbul, and from Istanbul to Diyarbakır. He met with his contact Abdullah. He met with PKK forces in Turkey where he demonstrated he had a fair grasp of basic communication in Kurdish and the ability to fire his weapon. He was then smuggled into syria and spent the last of his money of a gun, the YPG helped to provide a uniform.

Augustyn is now in the thick of the war he watched from afar for years. While he himself does know why he felt compelled to come to the deserts of syria he can say he feels a sense of purpose. He fills the things missing from his life back in Poland being fulfilled here in syria. It's a place to escape and to feel whole, to find meaning.

Good to be on, so would we be starting right as ISIL starts to press onto the city or right around the October Counter Offensive?

We'll probably be starting within a week or so of the initial offensive in September.
