His depravity was eventually stopped by law enforcement and he was brought to court in 1927. The court though ruled that he was not sane enough for prison and ordered his incarceration in a mental asylum outside Berlin. Here he spent his time under constant watch and always restrained, biding his time, knowing that he would get out.

And his chance came. In 1940 the growing Sonderkommando Dirlewanger needed more men from unlikely places. The initial focus on nothing but poachers hunting with guns was lost and regular poachers as well as severe criminals and the criminally insane such like him were allowed to join the unit. Just as all recruits, he received a rushed training and was handed a weapon from captured stocks. He got lucky, receiving a high quality czechoslovak rifle. Anyway, after the rushed training they spent their first time in Poland where Dietrich attracted the ire of local Wehrmacht and SS command by falling back into his old habits and murdering civilians. Granted, a lot of others from the unit did the same and thus the unit was eventually placed in Belarus after the beginning of Operation Barbarossa. In Belarus he and the others could live out their most depraved dreams, slaughtering, raping and looting whatever came into their sights. For his skill and loyalty to Dirlewanger, he was eventually promoted to Rottenführer.

But the war turned to shit for the germans and they were pushed out of Belarus and into Poland. And guess what started in summer 1944? Yes, the Warsaw Uprising where the Dirlewanger Brigade distinguished itself once again as one of the most brutal units in the Nazi war machine. Dietrich participated in nearly everything they did there and he was also among the lucky survivors. His focus on close quarters combat paid off in the ruins of the city and was further honed there fighting the Polish Home Army. He built quite the reputation there, with Polish people whispering tales of the Carver and losing their courage when they heard he was in the area, heard the screams of his victims.

It was this reputation he built as a CQC specialist that also allowed him to leave the rather unhealthy atmosphere of the Dirlewanger Brigade.
