Beat Laurence yet?
Yep. First time too, though I was a bit over leveled. Was forced to git gud during the Orphan fight and learn how to riposte with the pistol. Once I got that done, I literally beat Gherman first time too.
(I was a filthy casul before that who overly relied on two handers and ignored the pistol. Took me like ten times trying to beat Lady Maria like that. )

Wait you didn't learn to parry UNTIL the Orphan?

He also despised the church to a degree, only being a hunter to kill beasts.

Well, I really starting experimenting during Lady Maria, but I wasn't really effective until the Orphan. Prior to that, I went through the main game until the Amygdala w/o knowing how to parry.
(It might be b/c I was more used to Dark Souls beforehand, where parrying isn't really as important imo, especially since you could only parry human-type enemies/other players and not the giant monster bosses. I found riposting with the pistol in Bloodborne much easier in comparison when I got the hang of it, which is the stage where I finally got gud like I said. )

That's fair, were you a strength or skill build?

More towards strength since I mainly used the Whirligig Saw and Moonlight Greatsword (two handed at first, but almost exclusively one handed now).
My skill wasn't too low either since I generally tried to bring up all my stats so that I could use all the weapons and hunter tools, which made my stats pretty even tbh. Not really specialized towards strength or skill like other people since both were under 40 last time I played with health and stamina being the highest at 50 and 40 respectively. Keep in mind I haven't entered NG+ yet.
How about you?

When I first started playing I was using exclusively saw spear because why not, it's great. Keep in mind I prefer Dex or strength so skill was my forte.
By the end of the game I was using the Chikage because i multiclassed with blood tinge. Evelyn and Choose were my preferred weapons because the transformation plus damage was just too good.
By Ng+ I am using the Rakuyo because it has one of the most varied move sets in the game. It's really fun. So now it's Chikage/Rakuyo for me.

Your character sounds like Lady Maria's successor lol. I personally wish I put more towards a skill build now that I know how to parry effectively in any case, though I do use the Evelyn as my primary pistol now too.
No joke though, I found getting the Rakuyo harder than than some of the bosses in the game because of those two shark monsters in the well. I had to cheese them in the end, since I didn't want to spend too much time on them when the Orphan was just around the corner. :/
