So what is this?


This, my friends, is a reboot of the old "Point of Divergence" RP.It utilizes the concept of ISOT (a common alternative history term taken from Stirling's Island In the Sea of Time trilogy) to make a nation RP that should produce interesting results. Anyhow, what might the term ISOT mean?

Incidentally, this kind of “coping with the aftermath of an ISOT” is a very common theme (or trope) in works that use it.


Often, there are many ramifications associated with the concept of the ISOT (as stated above), something this RP will seek to explore. The world we'll be RPing will be a diverse one, one not confined by the mere boundaries of complete realism and factual truth. There will be variety, and it will (in many cases), be rather "out of earth".



It's quite simple: nations and organizations from all over the multiverse (fictional franchises, personal fiction, alternate history, etc) are teleported to a version of Earth completely bare of sentient life (note, all weather patterns and plant life still exist, as do geographic features), a "Virgin Earth". The RP that follows focusses on the post-teleport (from now on, we shall call this "The Event") situation of the planet, and what happens in a world where everything seems different from how the various nations once saw it.

It's my first real experience with a nation RP of this type, and I do believe it can succeed if implemented properly. For those interested, hop on board and prepare for a ride of your life! Forwards to a brave new world we go!

It might've been a hot, sunny day for some, and it might've been a cold, snowy day for others. However, none of that mattered in the end, as the event spared no one. Across many worlds within the greater multiverse, The Event happened. Whether it took seconds or minutes; whether it was a flash of light, or a sudden darkness, when the Event was over, societies and organizations from all over existence found themselves on a new world, one spared from the excesses of civilization, conflict, and strife. It was an empty world, one where no soul had ever stepped a foot upon. What the future has in store is yet to be known, but it will certainly be anything but static...



Rules, Regulations, and some Basic Information

  • Follow the given rules. I am willing to take criticism and make certain exceptions in some cases, but don't count on it.
  • OP's word is final. If OP is not available, defer to CO-OPs.
  • No god-modding / meta-gaming. While the concept of balance within this RP may be questionable, please consult with players if you plan on doing anything that will affect them to a large extent.
  • As state above, be realistic in your actions. 1940s propeller planes won't do well against modern jets.
  • 3 strikes and you're out. I won't tolerate flaming or trolling of any kind here. Each time you're accused of doing so, you'll get one strike and a warning to stop.
  • A minimum requirement of 3 paragraph posts for anyone. We want to maintain some level of in depth content.
  • Keep WMD use (against other players) to a minimum, unless common consensus can be made. WE'RE going to avoid any world ending apocalypse.
  • Realism, what's that? Depending on your play style, your nation could be totally realistic or rather fantastical. All up to you, just nothing that's blatantly OP. Dieselpunk, steampunk, (other punk categories), alternative history, fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, etc) are all possibilities when creating / selecting (if you're taking RL ones) a nation / organization.

**NOTES:
-We are trying to limit the number of overly advanced factions (incredibly modern, cyberpunk / PMT and FT). IF someone does choose to do a nation / organization of the type, please keep it low key and small.
-Magic will be allowed (for those nations and groups that it applies to), so long as it isn't absurdly powerful.
-Your nation doesn't necessarily need to be from Earth, it simply needs to be able to fit on Earth, although nations originating from Earth-like worlds / Earth itself are preferable.

-Yes, you can be alien space bugs if you want (just tone it down).
-Yes, you can be some anime-esque nation of the sorts.
-Yes, you can be an insane atom-punk totalist dictatorship.
-You get the point.

-IMPORTANT - Organizations with no set location (companies, pirates, mercenaries, etc) can choose where to spawn / teleport to initially (if within another player's borders, permission is required). Most assets (buildings, infrastructure, etc) will come along.

-Nations DO NOT need to have their entire landmass ISOT-ed. You could honestly do some sort of rump state if you really wanted (ex: out of the USA, only the western states come along)

The Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force is the land warfare branch of the Japanese Self-Defence Forces (JSDF), and Japan’s de-facto national army. Its sole tasking is the defence of Japan’s borders and territories, a task that it is well-prepared to perform. However, it has to be noted that the JGSDF is by no means an expeditionary force, and is ill-suited to operating outside Japan. As a result of The Incident, only two field armies (the Western and Central Armies) are present, along with the ARDB – Japan’s own elite marine unit.

Maizuru Provincial Army

Combining amphibious warfare and airborne assault tactics with heavy use of naval support, the SNG is trained to be able to rapidly reinforce their presence along the island chain and to repulse any attempts to take it – as well as taking the fight back to their perceived regional opponent, China.

Hashirajima Army

In keeping with the nation’s post-WW2 pacifist identity, it takes great care in playing down its power projection capabilities despite being one of the few navies in the world to possess aircraft carriers (hence the preferred English terminology of “aviation destroyers” – part inside joke, part diplomatic consideration). Of course, due to Japan’s newly regained position as Asia’s leading power, this is largely seen today as merely due to time-honoured tradition.

The Maizuru Navy, the descendant of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Maizuru Naval District, is tasked with safeguarding Japan’s national interests in the Sea of Japan. This therefore placed it in a position of having to counter the Russian Pacific Fleet, based in Vladivostok. Given Russia’s emphasis on strategic nuclear assets, Maizuru’s main operational objectives was dictated by it – maintain sufficient deterrence in order to dissuade Russia’s use of strategic assets, neutralise and counter any use of Russian strategic assets in the event of it occurring, and to eliminate the local threat posed by the Russian Pacific Fleet in the event of war.

The Sasebo Navy has often found itself being described as “a ferry service for the Sasebo National Guard”. While that’s not strictly true considering the successes it had against the PLAN – that is, China’s navy, military sealift is a major tasking undertaken by it. Still, it isn’t a force without other capabilities. Widely considered Japan’s foremost experts in anti-submarine warfare, they played a vital role in curtailing the operations of China’s submarine fleet during WW3.

This is possible solely due to Hashirajima’s strategic position in the Inland Sea, making maritime defence much less of an urgent priority. The Hashirajima Navy has at its disposal the bulk of Japan’s aircraft carriers and as such, in the aftermath of America’s decline after the Intervention, effectively became the public face of Japan’s resurgent naval power. Of course, it is inevitable that this also drew much less positive comparisons with its historical predecessors – the infamous Kido Butai of WW2. A comparison that, in light of the almost-brutal successes Hashirajima had against the Russian and Chinese navies in WW3, isn’t particularly unwarranted.

History :
The millennium was the third. As it had been for centuries since the end of WW2, the former naval districts of the now-defunct Imperial Japanese Navy had lived alongside their motherland in a state of quasi-independence dating back to the Showa era, the result of intensified IJA/IJN disagreements over the decision to go to war that ended up as a legal exploit used by Hirohito to ensure Japan wasn’t left unarmed after their surrender. The result was that the cities of Yokosuka, Kure, Maizuru, and Sasebo were declared independent and thus (by long-contested interpretation) “defending” themselves against a perceived US invasion. In short, the end result was that each city state became responsible for raising its own military forces, initially building off their allocated naval and marine assets. 500 years later, each of the so-called Naval Provinces commanded a military of significant strength that served to supplement the JSDF, mostly by filling the deficiencies left by Article 9 of the post-war constitution – which has also seen several reinterpretations to better suit the prevailing global situation. Over the years, Japan had relied on these forces for several conflicts in the 21st century, most notably World War 3 where it took its place in an alliance against a China-Russian alliance, and an intervention in the USA to contain a civil war that was threatening to escalate beyond the borders.

The year was 2556. Having enjoyed 500-odd years of peace after the American Intervention as the leading power of the Asia Pacific Treaty Region, Japan was once more called to arms. Across the world, reports were received about a new, extraterrestrial threat which had already struck many nations. Guided by means unknown, this new force had struck capitals and major installations, and their advanced technology left the militaries of Earth helpless against their onslaught. In Asia, the post-WW3 Republic of China – which came to power after the fall of the People’s Republic – was the first to fall, and even now the remnants were under renewed assault by a resurgent Communist faction. Korea was next, and after that, the Russian Far East. With that, there was only one nation left in East Asia, and Hokkaido found itself under attack.

The JGSDF Northern Army – the most heavily armed field army of Japan’s de-facto army – found itself as nothing but a minor roadblock in this war, and the enemy marched relentlessly southwards towards Tokyo. But a minor roadblock was all that was necessary for Japan to muster its forces in full. It was at the Tsugaru Straits, between Hokkaido and the Japanese mainland (Honshu), that the Aggressor found their absolute advantage challenged for the first time.

As they prepared to cross what appeared to be an undefended stretch of water from Hakodate, they came under naval shelling and air attack. Curiously, there were no ships in the nearby waters. And the scale of the damage inflicted was certainly disparate from what one would expect from modern naval guns.

Still, the Aggressor persisted, making the crossing with diminished numbers and coming into contact with what they expected to be the JGSDF Northeastern Army. Except this time, Yokosuka has managed to muster, and fought alongside their Self-Defence Force fellows. At the same time, news started to emerge of entire Aggressor units taken out in remote locales before making contact, and judging by the damage that resulted, via high-calibre artillery. Specifically, calibres that far outstrip what Japanese artillery units were thought to field.

Nonetheless, the Japanese forces were pushed back, and a battered Northeastern Army was relieved by the Eastern Army as the Aggressors closed in on the capital. It was at this point that the Japanese government formally made the request. Or rather, they intended to. What instead happened was the Battle of Tokyo.

The day was the 18th of June. The Aggressors entered Tokyo from the border of Adachi and Kita Wards, taking advantage of their unopposed charge down the Tokoku Expressway. Their goal was Chiyoda Ward, the seat of the Japanese central government. For the first minutes, all was still but the falling rain. Too still. The streets were clean; there were no signs of the chaos that came with sudden evacuations; even the cars were parked neatly. Yet, there were no signs of life either. Not a single soul inhabited the city; not a single footstep to be heard other than that of the advancing army… A trap was suspected, but the commanding officers led their troops on – a capital laid open for the taking was simply too tempting to ignore.

Then, a haunting tune drifted through the ghost city. It was a music box, sitting in the middle of the otherwise-unoccupied road junction. One of the invaders approached it cautiously and picked it up. Something snapped.

The fragile, elaborately crafted toy fell silent.

Footsteps approached.

A shell was rammed into a gun with a resounding “clank”.

Lightning flashed.

A naval rifle discharged.

Thunder roared.

The world erupted in fire.

On a nearby mountain, a figure stood up, raising her bow.

“It’s time.”

Two score and thirteen followed her lead, raising bows, crossbows, talismans, staves.

“First wave, commence sortie!”

The sun disappeared, the melody of pouring rain torn apart by the roar of jets.

Tracks tore into asphalt, boots striking a hasty staccato, a shattered force taking refuge from the onslaught. In their dust, an orchestra of gunfire sang the symphony that ends the world. A right turn, a left swing, a street crossed. A house crushed to hasten, a bridge felled to delay, a park razed to obstruct.

Pause.

Caution.

The ignition of righteous anger.

The steeling of frayed nerves.

“Poi.”

Nightmare.

A battle commenced. A battle ended.

A city defended. A city sundered.

But the Japanese forces completed their mission. Faced with a seemingly-invincible force, they broke the opponent. The Japanese capital was turned into a death trap for the Aggressor forces, shattering their cohesion and whittling away at the pieces. The cost, however, was heavy. Yokosuka practically threw all their forces into this engagement, and a fragment returned. The JGSDF wrote off two field armies, the Northeastern and Central left with but a shadow of their former selves. As for the daughters of the fleet, glorious veterans of two world wars?

The torpedo squadrons struck true, limping out of the burning city with bitter tears but savage smiles.

The carrier force was preserved, tasked with covering the retreat from afar.

The line of battle held, withstanding the relentless blows head-on. All but one walked out, the Chrysanthemum-Bastion-in-Gold-Clad last seen standing tall in defiance, clothed in the flaming ruin of the Imperial Palace.

There will be time for rest. For resupply. For the mustering of the forces. For the next engagement.

For they will fight on.

One week. Tensions are high along the Second Line. All hands were on deck, all guns loaded, all eyes keenly watching all that lay before them. Then, a yell sounded out.

Enemy spotted by scouts.

Teeth clenched, as the defenders waited restlessly for the right moment in time.

Enemy contacted.

A Queen, her right to rule forged from the hope held by a shattered nation, watched as out of nowhere the enemy vanguard was lost in conflagration. Out of the fire limped out an Empress, her heavenly mandate quenched in the blood of her empire’s foes.

As Her Imperial Majesty lost consciousness from the exertion of the past days… her last conscious thoughts were of her nation and people.

And the world… answered.

Extra Information / Quirks: Hyperion still continues production of the CL4P-TP line of stewards robots, although most kinks have been ironed out. Currently Hyperion still has the Helios in orbit over the new earth, although it's cannon has been severely damaged.

Military Description
Army:
A massive army that relies on mass overwhelming force via robotics along with skilled human forces, the Hyperion ground forces are mainly robotic loaders of the GUN variant although more advanced and stronger variants do exist in smaller numbers. Most of the army however consists of GUN loaders which are just loaders reinforced slightly and with their right arm replaced with an assault rifle firing 7.92 mm bullets at their own pace. Some variants however come armed heavier cannons or the ability to shift into vehicles. The army however, is severely lacking in proper land vehicles and primarily relies on air transport and trains for external and internal transport respectively.


Standard GUN Loaders: The standard loaders that Hyperion mass produces into service and for use as manpower, Loaders are known to be somewhat lacking in terms of programming as they are only programmed to fire and throw grenades, other actions requiring additional commands instead. They make up the bulk of Hyperion's defenses, from lone outposts to important facilities they're nearly everywhere that requires some form of protection. Their main purpose is as garrison troops in order to free up more human troops for the front lines although they still serve as front line troops as well. Loaders require their own specialized air transport for long range movement.


Hyperion Soldier: The standard infantry that actually breathes among Hyperion's ranks, Hyperion foot troops are usually armed with assault rifles firing off the similar 7.92 mm rounds carried by loaders and come equipped with personal shields that provide moderate protection against bullets. They mainly operate as a main force alongside loaders. Their roles mainly involve defending important instillation and acting as garrisons to slowly allow for towns to move from human to robotic occupation. Despite their defensive role they are still effective assault units on the move. The soldiers are divided into 2 types of divisions, assault divisions and garrison units both serving equal duties based on their name with the former being 2 times larger.

Navy:
The navy is one that is slightly more unconventional than most others, instead of relying on surface ships Hyperion relies on her massive submarine fleet that makes up most of the navy along with a sole carrier task force. The naval doctrine mainly relies on long scale submarine warfare mainly playing to Hyperion's mass industrialized territories, waging submarine warfare long term in order to destabilize the enemy's fleet and disrupt naval trade. This is to play to the strength of industrialization, whereby Hyperion falls back upon it's industries to produce enough submarines to overwhelm the enemy. Another part of the doctrine relies on the belief of a decisive strike, which is why Hyperion almost employs carriers and submarines exclusively save for a small pocket of submarine tenders.


Standard Hyperion Submarine: The standard submarine employed by Hyperion for operations that involve the ocean and water, the standard 'Atlantis' class submarine makes up the bulk of Hyperion's fleets. Standing at a standard size of 120 meters with a beam of 7 meters and a height of 11 meters, most measurements are standardized for mass production. These ships can move at a fast speed at roughly 80 km/h surfaced but goes slower at 74 underwater. They mainly rely on underwater action to take their targets out, preferring to operate by drawing their targets out into open sea in order to torpedo them.

They're armored to withstand most natural environment damages including but not limited to random jets of water and kraken attacks that crush the hull. However, despite their importance as attack submarines that make up the bulk of Hyperion's fleets, they're armed with a single 65 cm torpedo tube and can release 10 rounds before needing to return to either base or a submarine tender for rearmament. They're also armed with 6 missile launchers in the case they're forced to surface and engage in surface combat. As a last ditch escape, they carry with them 3 decoy buoys that can imitate their signal but are detectable by a lack of any appearance on sonars. Their method of operation is mainly in packs of 4 that converge on convoys or operate alone on lone ships. They're equipped slightly better in terms of sonar array.


Hyperion Command/Carrier Submarine: A special variant of the standard submarine that can be a class in it's own right, the command/carrier submarine of the 'Tempest' class mainly operate under special conditions due to their high importance and cost per unit. The standard conversion would be 1 Tempest for every 5 Atlantis. These behemoths stand at roughly 200 meters long with a standard beam of 12 meters and a height of 18 meters. These ships move slightly slower than Atlantis class submarines at roughly 30 km/h on the surface and at 21 km/h underwater due to their design. With their special carrier submarine design, they rely less on direct combat with the enemy but act as impromptu carriers for longer distances, and can act as command centers for sectors of submarine packs.

They're armored to withstand shorter bursts of attack from the enemy in the form of aerial or surface dropped depth charges although longer attacks can immobilize and destroy them. They're primarily armed with 6 missile launchers for surface engagements and a double barreled energy cannon for anti-air or light craft action. Their main role as carriers however allows them to mount on 2 hangar bays carrying 1 transport each. Each transport can either carry a full set of GUN loaders or a specialized Saturn Loader designed to cause maximum damage with any means including it's own size.

They're designed for long term operations, get within range of the transports, launch off their loader array and quickly return back before fleeing towards a submarine tender that was most likely waiting for them and repeat after rearming and refueling. They operate with at least 3 packs of Atlantis submarines as escort and boast an even wider sonar array allowing for larger detection.


Standard Hyperion Carrier: The standard 'Neptune' class carrier of Hyperion's armadas, the 'Neptune' carriers are nearly moving islands in their own right and rightfully make up the bulk of Hyperion's naval carrier forces. These carriers stand at roughly 250 meters with a 34 meter beam, and move at a speed of roughly 28 km/h at maximum speed and can travel for a total of roughly 19,000 km straight without refueling. They act as their name states as aircraft carriers but can double on as a command vessel while some ships have been remodeled to submarine tenders to support submarine operations.

They're armored heavily to withstand energy attacks and ballistic attacks to a lesser degree, and in the interest of space rely on retractable anti air units capable of reaching roughly 10,000 meters at 30-45 degrees elevation for heavier, slower firing units but for faster lighter units can reach 2,000-4,000 meters depending on elevation. So far it is equipped with 10 double barreled heavy units, 5 on each side with 30 quad barreled light units. They have a total carrying capacity of 90 aircraft primarily because of the small drone like size of each aircraft, or a total capacity of 70 aircraft and 10 BNK3R class assault units armed either with a downward facing heavy laser unit or missiles.

Due to their cost and size, they mainly operate only in 1 carrier task force escorted mainly by submarines and the Helios Atmospheric Carrier. They're more likely to enter a combat scene after a few months or a year of full out submarine warfare, primarily to deal the final blow and clean up any remaining units before the carrier submarines and Helios Atmospheric Carrier can begin landing troops.
Air Force:
A service that is more of a combined arms action, the air force mainly provides transport and air cover for the Hyperion military in the form of it's heavy transports and assault craft. The air force is reliant on army doctrines, with the army being more focused on air cover but still placing heavy emphasis on air transport while the navy primarily relies on submarine-borne transports to launch quick attacks on coasts in the form of Saturns and Loaders.

History :
Hyperion corporation's history is somewhat blurred to say the least and unknown at most. Starting by making it's breakthrough as one of the last remaining companies in the corporate war in the 6 galaxies after the fall of the central government, Hyperion's founder Maxim Turner took this chance to profit from it and had acquired a large amount of wealth, enough to acquire Lawrence De Quidt, founder of the AI branch and Alma Harren, co-founder and innovator of Hyperion's stabilizing technology. After a while, carrying on following Jack's takeover as CEO and further rise to hold sections of Pandora, the Hyperion corporation's holdings through the 6 galaxies suddenly disappeared one day without a word, appearing in the new virgin world with Helios station sadly suffering a horrible fate.
