History:
Minor divergence with independent Norse chief in Wadden Isles.
Major Divergence begins with Cnut the Great’s son Harthacnut(Cnut II/reigned 1035 to 1049) living long enough to inherit his father’s empire, but before he could get a hold of the ropes, he was dealing with an English revolt. Landing at Sandwich and scoring a decisive victory over the rebels, he would strengthen his hold upon the Kingdom of England. However, he had to appeal to the populace by converting to Catholicism, and he furthered his hold by invading a pagan Norse chief in the Wadden Isles, gaining him the approval of the Pope and the people of England. He was able to sire a son, Cnut, but a few years later died in a hunting accident, now the Empire was in a regency, and in the Medieval Ages, that was, most of the time, a death sentence for any state.
Cnut, now Cnut III(born 1041/reigned 1049 to 1096) aged 8, had to deal with reopened wounds in the form of the Englishmen getting uppity again, and after a series of defeats against the rebels, the North Sea Empire was booted off the British Isles, with the exemption of Northumbria, his teen years and coming of age were uneventful, as it was a time of rebuilding. From there, the now 22 year old Cnut III’s ships would sail to and fro, bringing with them trade and money from the Channel and the Baltic and the Mediterranean Seas, with this money 22 year old Cnut III would improve much of his domain, and building motte and bailey castles in Northumbria, and the border with the Holy Roman Empire(all in a period from 1063-1070. He also used this money to fund invasions of the Shetland and Faroe Islands(1063 and 1064), and an invasion of Iceland late in 1065.
At the year 1066, he contested William the Bastard in the claiming of England, Harold of Godwin was quickly beaten by William, who would quickly rush northward to meet Cnut III in battle, in what is known as the Battle of Stamford Bridge, William beat the Norse bloody, and they retreated away to Northumbria, but the Normans quickly followed, in what is known to historians as the Retreat of Cnut, the Norse quickly retreated to sea while the ports were on fire, dooming some of their compatriots to death by Norman. Cnut III would then repair his armies to prepare yet again for another invasion, but for some reason, after finishing up his army, quickly called it off to instead invade Pomeranian tribes nearby in 1074.
This state of affairs held for some time until 1095, where a massive Pomeranian revolt occurred. He took his armies to fight, and beat the rebels hard, but Cnut was severely wounded by a rather large swordsman. He would die a year later. Cnut III the Wise, son of Cnut II Harthacnut, was dead. But he had an heir that was of age, Erik, and succession was smooth, Erik would lose Pomerania early in his reign however.
Not much of importance occurred, with events allowing what is now today to happen occuring, other than Erik III making a castle on the Greenland coast in 1201. The name of the Empire would then shift from North Sea to Danish in this time, but the “Emperors” would only be kings.
There was no colonization in the Age of Colonialism starting at around Columbus’ “discovery” of America(Norse were first!), but the population of Norse in Greenland would exceed that of the native Inuit(cough wars cough diseases). Conversion to Protestanism would go on as usual. A Chancellorship was established around this time, though the Chancellor was named Lawspeaker instead.
Fast forward to the Napoleonic Wars, they still supported Napoleon, but nothing much changed other than the Battle of Trafalgar being a pyrrhic victory for the British due to the presence of the Danes, but in exchange, more than 70% of the combined fleet was either captured or destroyed.
Everything goes quickly until 1880, where Cnut XII would purchase the isles of Corvo and Flores from Portugal. And here we are.

History:
The Sima clan is defeated at the Incident at the Gaoping Tombs, meaning they never seize control of Northern Wei and lead it to conquer Shu Han and Eastern Wu and end the Three Kingdoms period under the Jin dynasty. Continued intense warfare between the Three Kingdoms continues for another century and a half before the stalemate stabilizes somewhat, with China cloven in three. While the other two states embark on their own journeys through history, Eastern Wu stabilizes under the Sun dynasty- until the introduction of Islam to the region, at first by an embassy from the Caliph Uthman in 651. By this point, the Sun dynasty was somewhat aged and decrepit, and the arrival of Arab and Persian merchants bringing Islam with them proved incendiary to the highly stratified social classes of Eastern Wu. This was a particular problem in the south, around Nanhai (modern Guangzhou) and the Yangtze river delta near the capital, where the traders and missionaries were most active and thus found the most converts. In 705, Muslim rebels around Nanhai rebelled against the Sun dynasty, aided by some Arab merchants, missionaries, and diplomats. When word of the violence reached the capital, Muslims in the Yangtze delta region also rebelled. The Sun court was eventually forced to retreat to Fujian in 709 after a string of defeats, where the new faith had less of a following, and fought a twenty-year campaign from its new seat in Quanzhou to try and suppress the rebels. The rebels initially made more gains, supported by a small Arab force sent by the caliphate by ship to Nanhai, but the caliphate's internal struggles and the unwillingness of the Chinese Muslims to submit to a foreign ruler led to fractures in rebel forces that were exploited by the Sun dynasty, which retook Jianye in 724. Ultimately, however, the campaign failed when the young prince Sun Yi converted to Islam and defected in 726, with several rebel sects deciding to support him as Caliph of China (selecting him through shura rather than by his non-existent ancestral connections to the Prophet). Sun Yi, bolstered by further defections from the Sun army, court, and imperial family, successfully united the country and finally defeated his great-uncle, the Emperor, in 729, beginning the Sun era of the Wu Caliphate.
However, fighting continued throughout the central part of the country in the mountainous regions of Fujian even into the 800s, as people there who had not converted and had fought for the Sun dynasty resisted the advance of Islam into their communities, and also in the border regions as the interventions of other Chinese states into the civil war were wrapped up. By 820, however, the country was largely pacified, and a golden age of peace and prosperity came to the realm. During this time, Wu merchants voyaged widely across the South China Sea and into the ports of the southern islands and Indochina, establishing commercial outposts across Southeast Asia. Muslim proselytizing across Eastern and Southern Asia took off during this time as the Wu Caliphate grew stronger. The Caliphate also began the process of settling the islands of Taiwan and Hainan during this period, starting to clear out the thick jungles and hostile native inhabitants, while trade, industry, science, and the arts all flourished.
However, tensions with surrounding countries less receptive to Islam, and the bloody ascension of the Caliph Sun Chao to the throne over his elder brother Sun Lu in 946, brought this era of relative tranquility to a close. Increasingly militant strains of Buddhism taking root in the flourishing Khmer Empire found themselves in conflict with the export of Islam from Wu and finding followers in other kingdoms in Southeast Asia, and throughout the 1000s the Sun caliphate was engaged in a number of wars against hostile Buddhist powers in Indochina. Chinese control along the coast of Champa and the Indochinese interior waxed and waned- at some points, much of the Mekong Delta was under Wu occupation, while at others the territories around the Red River that had belonged to the Wu for centuries were occupied by Buddhist armies. In the end, little change occurred, but the caliphate had been destabilized and trade and economic growth across Southeast Asia had been profoundly disrupted by decades of warfare. The 1100s saw the increasing decline of the Sun caliphate, which in addition to suffering reversals at the hands of other Chinese and Indochinese states, was unprepared to react to the Jurchen invasions and saw the increasing investiture of power with regional governors and generals rather than the court in Jianye. This tumultuous time saw many more people begin to migrate to Taiwan and Hainan, and even some to Luzon, where Wu traders had long had outposts.
In 1172, a regional general, Qin Ali (histories say he was 1/8th Arab or Persian), commanding many of the armies stationed in the Yangtze River Delta, decided to rebel against the Caliph. At the time, the boy-caliph Sun Chanming sat on the throne, while power in the court was largely held by the eunuchs who controlled the harem. General Qin overran Jianye, slaughtering many of the eunuchs, but the boy-caliph was spirited out of the city and south to the mountains of Fujian, where his ancestors had once fought against the Muslim rebellions.
