G R E Y: A Story Of Heroes And Villains

IC Thread - Roster - Discord - Theme

“They came for the villains first and we didn't do anything. We weren't villains. Then, they came for the vigilantes. We didn't say anything because we still had sanctioned heroes. They then came for the sanctioned heroes, and when they came for us, there was no one left to protect us.”

B A C K G R O U N D

The age of heroes and villains is over. The year is 2024, and in this world, being born with powers is more of a curse than a blessing. The all-seeing eyes of the United Nations Superior Commission watches known power users, called Superiors, like a hawk. National governments experiment on Superiors at times, and at other times, they recruit them into secretive black budget military programs. The public, which has suffered at the hands of Superiors who used their abilities for evil, is apathetic at best and hostile at worst when it comes to the plight of the Superior community. There's no safe haven for those who find themselves born with powers. The Commission's reach is worldwide, and costumed heroes and villains are a thing of the past.

All of these factors led to a truce. A pact between good and evil, between heroes and villains. The terms? They're quite simple. Train the next generation of heroes and villains, and don't kill each other in the process. With the rest of the world standing against Superiors, infighting could spell the doom of both sides of the conflict. A new organization, Specter, was created out of resources pooled from the wealthier heroes and villains. Specter's only goal is to equip the next generation and to destroy the Commission by any means necessary. There's no ideological drive, no hero versus villain clashing. Because right now, the latter could be deadly.

That training takes place at Hadley Academy, named after one of the legendary Superior figures of the past. The island, located northeast of Malaysia, was completely destroyed by the Japanese during World War Two, leaving it abandoned... Making it the perfect place to dump a number of young adults, where they can figure out their powers without the interference of the Commission. The Academy isn't state of the art, but it is home to a number of the most experienced heroes and villains out there, and more important, it provides secrecy. The secrecy that's required to build up a revolution.

What will you do? Will you become a hero to protect the innocent? Will you aim for power and riches as a villain? Will you take the fight to the Commission, and end the oppression against Superiors? Or will you fold under pressure and leave the Academy in hopes of returning to your normal life? Well, that's up to you.

T H E A C A D E M Y

In this RP, you'll play as a student at Hadley Academy. However, this isn't your normal academy, because all students are Superiors, or humans with superhuman powers. Your goal is to train to fight the Commission and reverse the oppression of your kind. To do this, all of you will be split into two groups, heroes and villains. Heroes generally use their powers to help others, villains are generally out for their own interests. There's room for different types of personalities in both groups, but everyone will be put into one of the two and dorms will be divided by group.

Part of your time will be spent on Hadley Island, an abandoned place with a dark past and zero permanent citizens. Here, you'll go through some training and have time to yourselves. At certain points, there will be chances to use your training in the field, and fight back against the Commission, as well as other trips and chances to use your powers. Half of the staff are known as heroes, the other half are known as villains. You will be trained by both at different times, which should help you remember the golden rule.

That infighting is the quickest way to the demise of this academy.

L O R E

Scientists don't know where Superiors are from, or even what they are exactly. Some call them a different species. Others call them humans with various changes. Regardless of what they actually are, Superiors appeared on Earth relatively recently. The first appearances date back to the 1960s. Further appearances grew in the coming decades, and different places reacted differently. Some attempted to immediately experiment on them, other countries did nothing and didn't believe that reports of people with powers were legitimate, and others silently watched these people while examining how they fit into society.

In many third world countries, Superiors were understood less and faced dangers from the local populations. Many communities accused Superiors of using dark magical arts, and over the ten years between the 1970s and 1980s, there were many attacks in such countries, and even in some first world countries such as the United States. Mob violence became a common thing for anyone who showed their powers publicly in much of the world, and so while Superiors became more accepted in the west, they often lived in secrecy in the east and Africa. Because of their small numbers, however, there were not specific laws created for these people at this point in time.

1982 saw the first major controversy involving Superiors. As a way to prevent the violence against their kind, a group of Superiors from rural Ireland formed the organization known as Superiors United Against Human Terror. SUAHT represented the militant part of the Superior community, donning black masks and green military fatigues as part of their official uniform. They began as a local group operating out of the British Isles and striking at anyone who was accused of discriminating or acting against Superiors, but they gained infamy from the press and soon spread to other western countries.

Once SUAHT had a large membership, they spread east, clashing with the villages and towns that were home to anti-Superior violence. SUAHT was declared a terrorist organization by most governments of the world, but after a decade of Superiors being put down, many of them were ready to strike back. The group continued to grow in numbers until it was present in most countries, via a system of independently operating cells. They peaked during the 1989 Battle of Shanghai, when members of the East Asia SUAHT branch created a tsunami from the East China Sea and struck Shanghai, destroying much of the city with the unnaturally tall waves and killing tens of thousands of people.

The attack halted the city's growth as a major commercial center, and brought worldwide infamy to SUAHT. It also resulted in many countries drafting restrictive laws against Superiors. Laws that banned the use of powers, or limited them to a smaller group of government sanctioned heroes. Superpowered criminals, even the ones who weren't tied with terrorist groups, were cracked down on as well as SUAHT. This happened especially in developed countries with extensive intelligence agencies, as they used these agencies to gather databases of Superiors to monitor them.

In 1991, the top nations in the world met with United Nations officials to decide what should be done about the Superior population. When the Beijing Conference was over, they had reached a solution. The UN would form the United Nations Superior Commission, an organization responsible for laying out some rules. As a result of these new rules, using powers publicly quickly became illegal in the vast majority of the world's countries, with exceptions for those who physically cannot disable their powers.

In past years, vigilantes had done combat with criminals, creating popular heroes and villains that were larger than life figures. These people were now forced to abandon their activities, or go underground. For those that fought back, there were harsh punishments from the Commission's Task Force, which was made up of forces volunteered from UN member nations. Faced with a dangerous enemy, the Commission became brutal in their tactics, and by 2000, Superiors all around the world were forced to live in secrecy and avoid mentioning their powers. Popular teams of vigilantes, such as the Order of Saints, were forced to disband, their members either retiring or continuing as newly declared criminals.

A new wave of hysteria hit the world in 2009, when on the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Shanghai, the broken and beaten remnants of East Asian SUAHT went out with a bang by releasing a cryptic message reading "So long and goodnight," before staging a suicide attack on the Three Gorges Dam and destroying it with magic based attacks. The attackers were killed in the resulting flood, but also caused roughly 15 million deaths and displaced 450 million people living in the path of the floods. It was the largest terror attack of human history, and it caused public opinion of all Superiors, even perfectly law abiding ones, to drop significantly.

The economic effects of the Three Gorges Dam incident resulted in the 2008 recession getting far worse, and as a result, the United States elected Republican candidate Matthew Bell as the President in 2012. His campaign slogan, "We will not be moved," was both a reference to the United States as a superpower, and humans against Superiors. His first term saw the United States get much tougher on all Superiors, and other nations followed suit after seeing the USA take the lead. Fast forward to 2024, however, and resistance is growing worldwide against the restrictive policies of the Commission.

Specter, a secretive organization of Superiors both good and evil, was founded in 2023 to create a peace between all Superiors, one that would last long enough to overthrow the Commission. But with many Superiors growing up under the Commission's restrictions, they found it necessary to train the younger generation first. After all, by now, the young adults of the world are far removed from the days of the Order of Saints and SUAHT. Specter traveled to East Asia and set up a base on an abandoned Malaysian island that had been wiped out by the Japanese long ago. It was renamed Hadley Island, after fallen Saints leader Ross Hadley. Soon after, an academy was established with the purpose of finding the most promising young Superiors, and training both the good and bad to fight back.

R U L E S

Standard rules on NS apply. There are some RP specific rules to be aware of however. Firstly, mythological beings such as ghosts, vampires, angels, demons, and others are not allowed. Non humans who are not rooted in mythology, such as aliens, may be allowed. It depends on the exact specifics so you should ask before applying with one. Magic as a power source, however, is permitted.

The next major rule has to do with how strong your characters are. There isn't a hard ceiling but you should generally be on the lower end of the overall power scale and not the higher part. Comic books and superhero movies are not a good example for how strong your characters should be, because the heroes in these are typically near the high end of the scale. For example, you would be rejected for applying at the power level of Magneto, Scarlet Witch, or Wolverine. It should go without saying, but there should be practical weaknesses for your character too. The stronger they are, the more weaknesses and drawbacks they're expected to have.

Time travel is the only banned power, because it messes with the mechanics of the RP. Mind control based powers aren't 100% banned but most likely will not be allowed, as they rely on godmodding to work properly. Lastly, you need prior approval to play staff characters.

Vitals

Name: Jurik Tesar / Fantom
Gender: Male
Age: Estimated between 40-60

Alignment: Neutral
Role: Specter leader

Appearance:
Image

Abilities

Equipment: Other than the black skull mask that stays the same in most of Tesar's iterations, not much. Known to carry a pair of wrist braces that channel his manipulation over darkness. Typically dresses in all black or grey. Equipment is known to change at times but usually involves melee weapons.

Abilities: Fantom's body is made of a constantly shifting and reforming cloud of dark energy, which when compressed, forms a person. This energy can be manipulated and controlled by Fantom, and can change appearance, therefore giving him the de facto ability to shape shift. The energy also seems to regenerate when damaged, although it can be temporarily dispersed, leaving a hole in Fantom. The energy can also travel quickly without being in human form, giving Fantom strong evasive and movement based abilities for combat.

Personal

Personality: Direct and not the type of person to give a lot of details, Fantom is secretive and gets to the point as leader without beating around the bush and getting into the details of his own life.

Short Bio: The details of Fantom's rise, or his career before the Commission was founded, are spotty and unknown. Believed to be from the Czech Republic, Fantom was seen close to the original wave of Superiors. But he wasn't a hero, wasn't a villain either, and stayed off of the radar completely until governments began to crack down on Superiors, at which point Fantom began attempting to balance the power in the world, taking anti government actions and working from the shadows with the use of multiple faces and quick escapes, not keeping a single identity. Eventually, Fantom formed Specter, bringing together other likeminded people and brokering the truce between heroes and villains.

Vitals

Name: Izumi Satoshi / Shogun
Gender: Female
Age: 33

Alignment: Villain
Role: Head Villain Instructor

Appearance:
Image

Image

Abilities

Equipment: Carries a katana that's powered by her body's own spiritual energy. The only solid part of the weapon is the hilt, with the actual blade being a projection of her energy. She also has light body armor under her combat uniform.

Abilities: Izumi can project her own spirit as a physical force that can protect her, deal damage to others, or act as a healing force. However, this forces her to measure her use of her ability to avoid using too much of her own energy and passing out. Her energy stores grow back with time passing, but it's easier to burn through them than it is to regain them in the heat of combat. When she is projecting it, however, it's almost unbreakable.

Personal

Personality: Somewhat of an authoritarian, Izumi believes in following rigid codes and that these are the best way to achieving success. These codes have given stability to her life when other things failed to do the same.

Short Bio: Quickly noticed by the Commission in Kyoto, Japan, because of her noticeable and, at the time, hard to control abilities, Izumi spent much of her teenage years on the run and was taken in by the infamous East Asian wing of SUAHT. She moved to a compound in Cambodia, training every day and gaining a good amount of control over her powers by the age of 18, all while living without electricity at times and without much food either. Her skill gained her a role in the Three Gorges Dam attack, particularly with causing an early distraction elsewhere to allow the main attack to go down. But after SUAHT went down with the dam, Izumi became a free agent so to speak, and joined the secretive organization known as Specter after being identified and recruited as a SUAHT survivor, and an expert in their operations by now.

Vitals

Name: Cesar Wilder
Gender: Male
Age: 20

Alignment: Ambiguous (Leans hero)

Build: 6' 3"
Appearance:
Image

Image

Abilities

Equipment: Some throwing Knives

Primary Ability: Vibration manipulation- Can manipulate the vibration of molecules, allowing him to 'lock' the vibration so that the molecules stop vibrating and instantly move in the direction. This allows him to "flow" his body by manipulating the compression distance between atoms and molecules. As he runs, he can exponentially get faster, before just flowing over/under/around objects.

Other Abilities:
  • Can cause objects to vibrate with such intensity that the after images become solid as well, so a single thrown knife can create 2-4 actual incisions before they vibration wears off and they settle into one at random.
  • Given enough time, he can match is frequency with walls and objects and walk through them

Details

Nationality: American
Hometown: Portland
Sexuality: Bi

Skills: Unarmed hand-to-hand combat, mobility, infiltration
Flaws: No healing factor, and is weak to explosions or durable opponents not really being able to generate much offensive damage

Personal

Personality: Very laid back, and relaxed, Cesar tends to be introspective, thinking before he acts. He loves to goof off and have fun, and tries to stay level-headed during battle. He can sometimes get worked up, and likes to speak his mind, even if it abrades others.

Biography: It's odd to think about the small, pointless actions that lead to major destruction down the road. It was that, a small lapse of judgment, that cost Cesar his normal life.

Cesar grew up in the Woodlawn neighborhood in Portland, and lived an ordinary life, despite his traitorous powers. His parents had always lived in fear that they would be discovered, but they were devoted to preventing that day from coming. Cesar was forbidden to use his powers, and for the most part, he obeyed. He lived with a younger sister, and his mother and step-father who had really filled the roll of being his Dad. He was still living at home, taking classes at a local community college, waiting to transfer to a university later on.

He was careful, not showing his powers, and trying to fit in. The fateful day came when his neighbor happened to glance over to their house and saw Cesar using his power to shake up a can of paint to cover a hole he had put int he wall with a soccer ball. It was that misstep, a careless thought, that cost him everything. The neighbor called the Commission, and they came. They swarmed into the house and secured his parents, but Cesar was luckily on his way back from school, and he spotted a strange car outside his house.

The trap sprung, and Commission agents swarmed Cesar. In an instant, he turned into a blur and was across the street and over a fence before they could get a shot off. He ran, faster and faster, till he was outpacing cars on the highway as he raced out of town and into the woods surrounding Mt. Hood. He was cut off from his family; knowing that if he went back it would mean being captured or maybe even getting killed. With nowhere else to go, he kept on the move, using his powers to build up extreme speed and just flow over the country, stopping and moving randomly.

Eventually, Specter tracked him down, and told him about an Academy...

Ah, right. I mean it to really only be used on himself, but if he grabbed someone and held his grip, could he vibrate them apart slowly, or at least the part he was holding on to? Because flesh is spongy to begin with, and would be resistant to vibrations.

Vitals

Name: Trinity Mathieu / Aliaksandra Zakharenko
Gender: Female / Ambiguous
Age: 20

Alignment: Villain

Build: 5'9, 138 lbs
Appearance:
Image

Image

Image

Abilities

Equipment: In combat she uses long polearms such as staffs and spears. She is proficient in most short bladed weapons, however.

Primary Ability: Trinity has adaptive strength based on the amount of force absorbed. Or in other words, she gets stronger when she gets hit. Taking damage causes her to gain physical strength, durability, and agility, proportionate to the severity of the impact absorbed. Being shot would increase her strength more than being punched, for example. However, she can still be knocked out or killed like a normal person, and her ability wouldn't apply in these cases, meaning going straight for the KO is the smartest path when fighting her.

Other Abilities: Trinity also has a decent healing factor, closing her wounds quicker and setting broken bones without the need for her to do anything.

Details

Nationality: French-Belorussian
Hometown: Grodno, Belarus
Sexuality: Ambiguous

Skills: A born fighter who was tested further in the streets, Trinity is strong and muscular and has a good knowledge in unarmed and melee combat. Her fighting style takes from boxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Sambo, and her ability helps with that. Her other main skill is her determination. When others would give up and lose all hope, she doesn't.
Flaws: Trinity is headstrong to a fault and isn't afraid to rush into trouble without knowing when she's in too deep. Her relentless aggression in dealing with others gives her a nose for trouble, often biting off more than she can chew. Also, her ability leaves her vulnerable to attacks that quickly knock her out without allowing her to raise her power levels through taking damage, and even if she wins a fight, she has to deal with the injuries afterwards which can put her out of action despite her healing factor.

Personal

Personality: Trinity has always been self reliant and aggressive, even with her lack of social skills making that hard sometimes. She doesn't have much understanding of social norms, or no desire to adhere to them, but she's a go getter and she tends to make things happen when she wants something. She cares about security, for herself and her closest friends, and she'll do anything she can to attain that. It causes her to be utterly ruthless, because in the end, she's the only one that matters in this world in her own mind. It's not like anyone else has consistently been around for her. Despite her ruthlessness however, she's very insecure about her looks and her identity, since she looks very much like a boy at times and also has little national identity.

Biography: "So I was born in Grodno, on the western border of Belarus, near Poland. My name, originally, was Aliaksandra. Aliaksandra Zakharenko. I never knew the feeling of a loving family or a good home. I wasn't born into one of those, I was born into captivity. Like a caged animal. My memory is unusually sharp, and I can still remember it. Being raised by a surrogate mother until I was old enough for them to shove into a metal cell with two others. Of course, when that happened, I was only maybe five or six. They started training us young, giving us blunt melee weapons and having us beat the shit out of each other like a bloodsport. The ones that did good received rewards. They got candy, and they got to move into a better part of the building. The rest of us? Tough luck. I never made it to the top floor, but I survived by being the top of the bottom feeders as we got older. I wasn't afraid to kick someone's ass for looking at me wrong, and the attitude paid off.

When I was eleven, the Belorussian authorities raid this place that I've called my home. There was no fight. They came by surprise in the middle of the night and they arrested all the people in charge, some of them getting shot while resisting. Turns out the place was run by a bunch of former USSR researchers who kept their experimentation program going after the fall of the Union. Found a way to give us enhanced physical abilities in different forms by injecting us with serums when we were babies. Where they got me from as a baby, I don't want to know. I suspect my mother was someone else within the program, because we'd never seen outsiders come in and live with us. We all grew up with each other, in this brutal prison of a lab. And then we were split up.

Turns out I was cute as a kid, and I was quickly adopted by the Mathieu family, from Paris. My name was discarded and they picked a new one for me. Trinity. Because according to them, it took God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost to get me there after what I grew up with. They were upper middle class and living in Paris is what many people would have wanted, but I didn't find it so nice. I struggled with the language and to this day, I can't speak fluent French. In school, I became an outcast because of my inability to talk and my lack of understanding for the social system there. They called me "the Russian," but I put an end to that by putting someone's head through a wall when they ignored my correction about which country I'm from.

One month later, I heard girls talking about me and calling me ugly because I look like a boy. I chased the leader of the group down and shattered her knee by kicking down on it. I then hyper-extended and broke her arm, as we were instructed to do in Grodno. The girl's brother came after me when I stepped outside of the bathroom where the crime happened, but after he fed my power by knocking me down and into the wall, I got back up and broke his jaw with a left cross. I was expelled from school for these incidents, and forced to attend another one in a worse neighborhood. In the bad part of town, people didn't care as much if I fought. They didn't know about my power yet, either, but after word got to the Commission about what I had done at my last school, they sent someone to watch me at my new one.

My mistake was fighting back when I was sixteen, and I was confronted by a neighborhood mob outside of my family's house one morning. The word had spread about my power, after another fight, and it reached our neighborhood and my parents. Of course, I defended them, and myself. I smashed someone's skull in with my elbow, and I can still hear the sound of bone breaking quite vividly. The mob dispersed after that, but even though they had intended to hurt us, I was seen as the bad guy for protecting my family. The Commission agent that was always tailing me, he tried to make an arrest but I had already taken a few hits and I was able to overpower him, smashing his head through the window of his car and running into an alley. I was able to escape before their full response team showed up.

I did whatever I had to do on the streets to stay alive and keep a roof over my head. I left Paris because it wasn't safe, and hitchhiked my way to Belgrade in exchange for completing tasks and favors. Sometimes, I used force, but I tried to keep a low profile. In Belgrade, people could understand my Russian, even if I got nasty looks for reminding them of an older time when the Russians were a larger influence. The people of Serbia provided me with enough under the table work, sometimes involving using my power to act as hired muscle, to stay off the street. I didn't share my earnings with anyone except for a slightly younger Polish boy named Gerek, who also had powers and was on the run. He told me that he had come from a similar background that also involved post Soviet science experiments.

Nothing good lasts, though. The fuckers from the Commission caught up with us and we put on a valiant fight. I threw one of them off of a fifth story roof, and Gerek shocked a couple to death. But they really don't fuck around, and their team overwhelmed us. They shot Gerek right there, deeming him too much of a threat because of what he'd done to their friends. But really, they just wanted revenge. They drugged me up to keep me from being able to use my power, and I was hauled off to a secret camp in Novi Sad, that had Supers from former Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland, and my home country. I swear it was a death camp of some kind. I wasn't allowed to talk to the others, though, and I was detained there outdoors for about two weeks before this female officer drags me out of bed in the middle of the night and takes me out to the woods.

So I'm trying to figure out a way around getting shot, but she just puts her gun away and unlocks my cuffs, and tells me to run. I guess her maternal instincts kicked in or something. I end up running and hitchhiking until I end up in Zrenjanin, and from there, I threaten some smugglers and get them to drive me into Romania. I'm thinking that I'm on my last legs there, that I'm fucked because I don't know the language and the Commission is still after me, and the one person that understood what I was going through is gone and will never see me again, and so I'm almost ready to curl up and die.

And I'm just sitting in this alleyway in Timisoara and wondering how much time I have before one thing or another picks me off, and then this woman named Izumi shows up and says she has a way out of it all. And I'm desperate, so of course I accept the offer. I end up getting cleaned up when we travel to Bucharest, and I get to stay in the nicest hotel I've ever been in. This Izumi woman, she's rich or whatever and she lets me stuff my face with as much food as I want, buy clothes with her credit card, whatever. I'm asking what's the catch, but it turns out we're only in Bucharest for a week and then we're flying out to some island in Malaysia or wherever. Little did I know at the time that the flight to Malaysia would end up changing my life."

VITALS
Name: Dagon Argrave
Pseudonym/Nickname(s): Formerly Remenant, now just goes by Dagon. However, some foes call him Roach
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Build: 6'0" with an athletic build
Appearance:
Image

ABILITIES
Equipment:
  • Organic Suit (Unfinished): Dagon's "suit" is actually a modified alien organism. The original creature was designed to bond to an organic host, render it unconscious, create a super-durable cocoon around the host and then change it's biology into something that will propagate the species. Thanks to Tartarus's experiments, the organism has retained it's ability to create it's resilient armor while keeping it's other abilities dormant. It can also regenerate itself at roughly the same rate Dagon does, allowing for the armor to survive as long as he can.

Tartarus then modified the suit with cybernetics, including a HUD, short-range scanner, zoom focus, and a few other gadgets that would help a soldier in the field. All electronics are powered from the organism, which in turn is powered by Dagon's life-force, acting as a check to his rampant healing factor. The electronics are created by nanobots, which allow the suit's mechanical components to regenerate with its organics.

Due to his escape from the Tartarus facility, Dagon's armor is not in it's finished state. The armor was original supposed to retain it's durability at all times, but at this point is normally only as resistant as a military-grade body armor. It can increase durability be syphoning material from his weapons or an increased amount from his healing factor. However, this obviously has some draw backs. Syphoning material from his weapons locks them in whatever form they're currently in, and if this durable armor needs to be repaired will make the weapons unable to fire, forcing them back to their base state as a sword. Increasing the syphoning of his healing factor will cause hits to get through not to heal until Dagon has powered down or is unconscious. The maximum durability it can reach before locking weapons to their current form roughly equates to titanium.

While in it's less durable form, the excess material can be formed into tendrils, allowing Dagon to create ropes and supports out of his armor. He can even create restraints by seperating a piece of his armor into a putty-like substance, which attached to targets and binds their limbs together. These restraints are about as durable as the armor currently is. For example, if the armor is thin due to increased usage of it's building features, then the restraints are only as strong as rope.

The armor was also supposed to be able to change Dagon's abilities, feeding off his life-force to create new abilities based off other members of the creature's race, a feat currently unavailable. It is theorized that through recovering the armor of other Tartarus agents, Dagon can gain new abilities.

Finally, as a precaution to prevent the suit from being used against the Third Order, the suit currently has an ability to remove the restraints placed on the original creature. If the restraints are removed, the suit will begin to fight Dagon. First, it will attempt to control his mind, making him perceive friends as enemies and vice versa. If this programing is overrided, it will enter recovery mode, locking down and slowly encasing him in the same super-durable cocoon that normally acts as his regeneration pod. At this point, a signal will be sent to Doctor Typhon, allowing Dagon to be recollected by the Third Order. These restraints can be removed with either a powerful targeted spell or a specialized mechanical signal, and requires a counter-spell or cessation of the signal to revert the armor back to normal. Few people know of this, as Doctor Typhon has kept the vulnerabilities of his Tartarus agents fairly secretive.
  • Combat Evolution: A subset of the creature's ability to create armor, Dagon's suit is capable of adapting to environmental hazards that would limit his regeneration. For instance, if he was thrown into a vat of acid and had no parts of him outside of the vat, the suit would create a cocoon in a day that could survive the acidity, expanding as more of Dagon formed. The suit would then gain the ability to resist acid for a time, until it became accustomed to the new non-corrosive environment and adjusted itself accordingly.

This environmental resistance can be developed before entering the hazard if Dagon knows what he's facing, taking about a minute of channeling to form, or about five minutes once immersed into the environment. For instance, if he knows he's about to go on a space walk, the suit would evolve to survive the vacuum. However, it wouldn't allow him to the survive reentry. If he takes any damage during the minute, he must start the channeling over again, and any damage to the armor/himself during the five minutes of natural evolution must be healed normally. This resistance can be applied quicker for a specific portion of his body, allowing him to stick his arm into molten metal or his head underwater.

  • Truth: Truth is morphable weapon made from the same organism of Dagon's suit, capable of morphing between pistol and blade instantaneously. By reloading it in pistol form, it is capable of turning into a variety of accurate weapons, such as assault rifles, DMRs, railguns or snipers. The gun regenerates it's own ammunition, although more damaging ammunition takes longer to make. So while he could burst-fire a DMR without problem, he can't rain down sniper fire at the rate of machine gun. Anything it creates is grey with blue accents. It is capable of firing cryo and holy rounds. Once a day, it can morph into a creature and attach itself to target, forcing it to tell the truth for a short period of time before their will regains control. This is at the cost of not using the weapon for several hours while it recharges/reforms itself.

  • Justice: Justice is morphable weapon made from the same organism of Dagon's suit, capable of morphing between pistol and blade instantaneously. By reloading it in pistol form, it is capable of turning into a variety of damaging weapons, such as shotguns, miniguns, grenade launchers, and rocket launchers. The gun regenerates it's own ammunition, although explosives take longer to make. Any equipment it forms is black with red accents. It is capable of firing pyro and infernal rounds. Once a day it can morph into a creature and attach itself to a target, forcing it to feel all of it's pain receptors activate at once for several minutes. This is at the cost of not using the weapon for several hours while it recharges/reforms itself.

Primary Ability: Regeneration: Dagon's greatest ability is his healing factor. His able to take things such as bullets wounds, stab wounds, and third-degree burns within moments. He can regrow and reattach limbs, survive and move without his head, and even regenerate from a single cell, although this regeneration would take at least a month. His healing factor also makes him immune to foreign bodies, such as poisons and diseases. He must regenerate from the location with the most of his biomass, which at the very least would be from an incredibly resilient section of his suit, which contains a few stems cells needed to regrow him.
Other Abilities:
  • Enhanced Condition: Dagon's physical condition is significantly greater than that of a normal human. He possess superhuman speed, strength, agility, endurance, reflexes, senses and durability.

  • Fourth Wall Awareness: Dagon is convinced that he is a character in a story, and as such often talks to a narrator. All attempts to medicate him has been met with, and I quote, "You're not my real dad." Likely the result of his unstable cellular structure, it also makes him immune to telepathic aid or intrusion, as if entering his mind would drive others insane. However, magical illusions can still fool him. It also grants him limited knowledge about what the powers and names of people in his vicinity, although this may just be a result of reading too much about heroes and villains on online databases. It is believed this may be a form of limited precognition, but it seems to be limited only to noncombat uses.

  • Combat Ready: Dagon is a master combatant, trained in several unarmed and armed fighting styles. Similarly, he's been trained in a variety of melee and ranged weapons. He is a master marksman, capable of hitting small, fast moving targets at long ranges, even while running. While he is capable of holding his own against trained professionals, he has to rely on improvisation or his endurance to beat specialists.

DETAILS
Nationality: N/A, has an America accent
Hometown: Undisclosed Tartarus black site
Greatest Desire: To find a place where he doesn't feel alone; To destroy Tartarus
Greatest Fear: Being totally alone, without even his narrator; To become a Tartarus agent again
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Skills: Parkour, juggling, balloon animal making, tactician
Flaws: Scared of mimes, has an irrational hatred towards statues and lawn ornaments, is crazy, complete disregard for authority, impulsive, talks too much

PERSONAL
Personality: Likes to talk and make jokes. Occasionally they're funny. Believes he's really a fictional character for an RP, though he doesn't like to tell other people. Is relatively trusting, if a little naive. Stubborn, slightly defiant with little regard for authority he doesn't respect. Believes in doing the right thing, though isn't above a little mischief.
Biography: Imagine, soldiers who could strike at even metahuman targets with impuny, someone who made their enemies feel as if a monster from legend had come early for them. This was the idea behind the Tartarus program, a secret Third Order project designed to be the perfect blend of genetics, technology, and magic. By augmenting a person's DNA to give them superhuman capabilities, altering their brains to make them unquestioningly loyal, then giving these individuals techno-arcane weapons and armor, the Monsters of Tartarus were set upon the world to preform impossible missions and black bag operations as the organization saw fit. However, they weren't perfect. Due to the nature of their missions, the Monsters would often take serious injuries performing their duties, which meant weeks or months in a healing chamber. Enter Remenant.

He was to be the first in a new wave of Monsters. Aside from the usual genetic alternations, Remenant would also receive a powerful healing factor, allowing him to stay in active use for longer. Ironically, the healing factor would prove fatal if left unchecked. As a result, Remenant was given an magically-altered alien parasite as his equipment. Full of amazing abilities, Remenant would have every tool at his disposal. He was now a one-man special ops team, capable of fulfilling any and all roles for any mission. Whenever not in use, he'd be thrown into solitary confinement. After all, with his healing factor, they didn't have to worry about age spoiling his body, so why bother with a stasis chamber tailor-made to his physiology?

Remenant was proving quite the asset, so the scientists decided to experiment on him further. They had recently discovered the "fourth wall," a sort of barrier between the fabric of reality that oracles and sages used to create their prophesies. While these magic users had been doing this naturally for centuries, scientist could now pinpoint where this "wall" was. Soon they began theorizing of what would happen if you linked someone's mind to this wall, hoping to create a soldier who would have a sort of precognition, able to avoid harm before it touched them. Because the scientists had no idea what kinds of adverse affects would happen to a human test subject, and knowing that Remenant possessed an amazing healing factor and was soon going to be replaced with a newer model, they decided to mess with Remenant's mind. Through a complex procedure, Remenant's mind was tied to the fourth wall. At that point, a rush of ideas and forces invaded Remenant's psyche. Remenant sprang from the table, his mind suddenly clear. He remembered everything, every horrible act he had every committed, and it was all because of the Tartarus program. Remenant was dead. Arising from it's broken psyche was a new identity. And he knew who he'd bring to justice first.

Donning his suit, the agent killed everyone inside of the testing chamber. As security forces rushed in, he fought his way though, eventually escaping capture. Once he reached safety, he wandered the world for a bit, acting as a vigilante to atone for his time as Remenant. He formed a new identity, the very opposite of what he was as a brain-washed soldier. He wouldn't be a silent, solitary villain, he'd be a fast-talking, monster-slaying hero. Taking the name given to him by the narrator, Dagon sought out the Academy to try and do some good.

Vitals

Name:Eli Stephens
Gender:Male
Age:16
Alignment: Hero
Build: Trim build, 5’7”, 138 lbs
Appearance:
Image

Abilities

Equipment: Prescription Glasses

Primary Ability:Adoptive Muscle Memory: Eli can easily copy movements and actions after seeing it performed once, including acrobatics, martial arts, and other physical stunts. For example, Eli can watch a person play the incredibly difficult Listz’s Campanella, and then play it with no previous experience. The more he sees the same action performed differently, the more he can do, such as learning different fighting styles of kung-fu. However, he can only successfully copy actions that he is physically capable of doing, so he can’t lift 400 pounds simply by watching someone else do it, nor can he perform a related action unless he has seen it, such as knowing how to fix a car but not knowing how to drive one. His ability is greatly impacted by visibility, rendering his power useless if he is blinded in some way, usually by the removal of his glasses.
Details

Nationality:American
Hometown:Charleston, WV
Sexuality:Bisexual
Skills:Anything he has seen done. Flaws:
Eli is extremely nearsighted, and can barely see anything without the use of his glasses. He can’t control his actions well when he is startled, which usually means beating the crap out of whatever startled him.

Personal

Personality: Naturally very curious, Eli holds a desire to learn everything there is to learn, and then some. He's quite self conscious about his nearsightedness, although that doesn't stop him from living his life, and it allows him to relate to others with some kind of physical anomaly.

Biography: Born in Charleston on November of 2008, Eli was the only child of three, his father being a coal miner, and his mother became a stay at home mom in order to raise him. Everything was perfect, a bit difficult, but perfect. Except for one thing, Eli couldn't see. Technically, he could see, but everything was blurry to him, except when things came within an inch of his eyes, where he could see perfectly. This is how it was during his childhood, people believed he was intelligent because his nose would always be in a book he was reading, but he was doing that only so he could actually read.

Soon enough, other kids caught on to his condition, and he was ridiculed for it, sometimes beaten. The worst part was that he couldn't even describe who it was that beat him. This continued as well, under threats of more beatings, Eli would lie about his injuries. This would continue up until the 8th grade. Concerned for his health, his parents scrapped up whatever spare cash they had to give Eli a pair of prescription glasses. To him, that was the best day of his life, as he began to cry as soon as he could see farther than just an inch.

During the weekend afterward, Eli began to enjoy the luxury of the television, watching the 2012 Olympics, specifically the mixed martial arts. As he watched as two competitors fought, a strange feeling overcame him as his perception of time slowed to a snail's pace. His eyes studied the fighters’ movements, watching as even the smallest muscle twitched. Before he knew it, the fight was over, and a voice, quieter than a whisper, spoke to him, saying ‘I bet you can do it too.’. Playing along to the voice, Eli got up and assumed the starting stance the competitors had before they fought. As he moved to do a basic kick, his muscles suddenly began to move on their own, throwing out a flurry of kicks and punches, just like the fighters had done. His body then moved back into its original stance, leaving Eli amazed at what he had just done. He sat back down and watched more events, the same scenario happening again and again, with new attacks appearing as he saw them being used.

Time passed quickly, leaving Eli amazed at what he had done. The day came to go back to school, but this time, Eli was excited rather than scared. As soon as he entered, he could hear an oh so familiar voice, the one belonging to his assailant. In an attempt to hurt Eli again, the boy attempted to sucker punch him. Before the blow could even come close to landing, the boy was in the air, flipping over Eli, before being slammed on the opposite side, knocking more than just the wind out of him.

Eli of course, was ecstatic, finally able to stand up for himself. From this, he learned that he was a Superior, and started learning of the things the Commission had done to Superiors for the sake of human safety. This angered him, and brought him the desire to see the Commission fall, to see equality among humans, with, or without powers.

As far as the faction goes, you're probably going to have the most luck with the former Soviet researchers in ex Soviet states and satellites such as Belarus, Poland, Latvia, or Uzbekistan. But those aren't really factions themselves. Mainly independent groups of under the radar scientists and ex Soviet agents working secretly for various reasons.

Vitals

Name: Ayelet Yahaloman.
Gender: Female.
Age: 16.

Alignment: Hero. She uses the alias Locust.

Build: Slim, Ectomorph, 5'5.
Appearance: [Her arm has a significant burn mark on it, though it is from several years ago and not very prevalent]
Image

Abilities

Equipment: Ayelet has created a set of wings that pretty much perfectly replicate that of a locus, appearance-wise of course. She can only 'fly' at a short distance, in fact, it's more of a...glide, though that's the way she intended. They are colored swamp green.
Her claws can serve as a tool in combat, but have a primary purpose of scaling walls and other structures, despite having nothing to do with a locust.

Primary Ability: Ayelet can eat/digest virtually any form of matter, regardless of size/shape, without harming her stomach, mouth, or digestive system and at a quick rate. This includes poison, acid, fire, knives, electricity and other superior's attacks. Ayelet has the ability to spit or breath (As in fire-breathing for example;note, as for fire which cannot be directly eaten or drinked, it is 'sucked' into her mouth) out whatever she consumes, to an extent, for a limited amount of time. Her teeth are strong enough to pierce metal.
(Ayelet can control whether drugs have an effect or not, and must taste whatever she consumes even though if it cause no harm. She is never 'full' and can eat an unlimited amount of stuff.)
Other Abilities: N/A

Details

Nationality: Israeli-Canadian.
Hometown: Montreal.
Sexuality: Asexual, Bisexual.

Skills: Intelligent, determined, agile, objective, open-minded, skeptical, not easily disgusted, flexible and realistic [At least in regard to being neither overly pessimistic or overly optimistic.] A skilled hacker.
Flaws: Absent-minded, forgetful, poor hygiene, disorganized, somewhat shy, has no regards for rules, and appears to have a somewhat childish range of emotions. She doesn't have any combat training or experience. Despite often procrastinating, Aye isn't lazy.
Personal

Personality: Ayelet is detached and analytical, sometimes seeming oblivious to the world around her because she is so deeply absorbed in thought. To her life is an ongoing inquiry into the mysteries of the universe. Hence she is quite philosophical.

Ayelet is independent, wanting little to do with others and the 'normal' way to approach issues, searching for ingenious solutions to even the most simple of issues just for the sake of challenging herself. Aye is skeptical, and suspicious of assumptions and conventions, eager to break apart ideas that others take for granted. She is merciless when analyzing concepts and beliefs, holding little sacred. She is often baffled by other people who remain loyal to ideology that doesn't make logical sense.

She is typically precise in her speech, communicating complex ideas with carefully chosen words. Socially she is like a chameleon, 'shifting' her personality and behavior to fit in with a group depending on observations that she has made about them, but remains consistently objective, and often ignores or forgets about social niceties.

Despite this she sometimes gets overly enthusiastic and energetic. INTP 5W4.

Biography: Ayelet was born in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in the city of Montreal, on May, 26th of 2002. She was likely born with her powers, but it's hard to tell. During her younger childhood the only odd thing about her (other than general quirkiness) was the rate at which she could consume food and drinks. At a restaurant she won a challenge, eating a Deli sandwich counterpart of those giant burgers that you got for free if you managed to eat it all under x amount of time, at WAY less than half the time of the previous record holder, and without any stomach pains during or after the endeavor. Well, there were a few...'lesser known' incidents that would've raised some level of suspicion. You know, eating rat poison and tide pods, drinking cologne, etc., all without pain. Yes, she didn't tend to follow rules that often, but that aside, a little kid wouldn't really notice the dangers of consuming these products.

Ayelet's parents, no, her whole family were quite religious, her father being a rabbi. They held a very negative opinion about Superiors, seeing them as either demonic creatures or nuisances to society. There were a few exceptions to this, but none notable, except for Uncle Ebrahim. It's not just that he was open-minded, there was just always something..off about him. It was probably around age ten that Aye officially discovered that she had powers. At school students caught on to her ability to consume just about everything without suffering, and wanted to push the limits with fire. As she began to experiment more following this experience, Ayelet realized what she had to do. Growing up her interests were limited. She hated sports and 'girly' things, also having few friends. Technology was one of them. She could probably had the qualifications to score a job at an IT firm, development studio or some kind of laboratory. Okay, maybe that was a bit of a stretch, but you get the point. Using whatever materials she could find, she managed to construct a working pair of wings.

She became the masked vigilante known as 'Locust'. Her activities were not crime-fighting related, but rather activism, protesting equal rights for superiors through use of posters, graffiti and even hacking websites controlled by the Commission and anti-Superior groups. One night, while she was snug in her bed, Aye awoke to the feeling of something tugging on her arm, and a car door flying open. Everything was a blur. Before she could regain her senses, she was violently dragged onto the floor.
That was the last day she'd ever her home. It seems Uncle Ebraheim was hiding a few secrets up his sleeves.

Vitals

Name: Kaarina Laine
Gender: Female
Age: 19

Alignment: Villain (although she doesn’t consider herself a bad person)

Build: 5’ 2”/ 7 lbs 2 pounds
Appearance:
Image

Abilities

Equipment: Kaarina has little more than the clothes on her back along with a pair of skis and ski poles and a survival knife.

Primary Ability: Kaarina’s main ability is what she refers to as ‘jamming’; any attempt to record information about her directly in any medium other than memory will be ‘fouled up’; photos of her become blurred like an impressionist painting, security footage deletes itself or becomes corrupted, drawings or writing or typing becomes smudged and blurry, mentions of her name over a phone become garbled. Her power works through direct references to her, whether it be by name, codename, nickname, whatever. If it’s intended to refer to her, isn’t a generalisation and isn’t vague, her power obliterates the information.

Other Abilities: Kaarina has two secondary powers, although she doesn’t gain access to both at once; which she has access to depends on which of her personalities is ‘ascendant’ as such. Her ‘dull’ personality has what she refers to as being a ‘face in the crowd’; when not specifically singled out for attention directly or alongside a specific group of people, Kaarina can simply ‘blend in’ with a larger crowd, becoming extremely difficult to pick out in the mass of people.

Her ‘bright’ personality, meanwhile, has a deactivatable aura around her that causes technology and mechanical systems to slowly break down and wear away while within her aura’s radius which is approximately 15 meters.

Details

Nationality: Finnish
Hometown: Taipaleenharju
Sexuality: Lesbian

Skills: Kaarina can ski cross-country quite well, having done quite frequently when she was younger and also being the means by which she escaped UN surveillance. She taught herself how to pick locks, and her family taught her some survival skills and how to hunt. She also has quite good stamina and is generally quite fit.
Flaws: Kaarina isn’t the strongest person around in physical terms, and she’s not actually that good in a fight in terms of combat ability; she prefers to run away. Unfortunately that’s not helped by that although her stamina is quite good, her actual speed isn’t.

Personal

Personality: Kaarina has two distinct personalities that she refers to as ‘dull’ and ‘bright’; she switches between personalities when placed under heavy emotional or physical stress. The ‘dull’ personality is what she considers to be her standard, original personality; quiet, shy, very timid but under it all a deep resentment against everything; deep down she just wants to be left alone, to her own devices to live her life.

Her ‘bright’ personality is the polar opposite; an extremely optimistic, friendly, energetic and outgoing girl who aims to please everyone and be everyone’s friend no matter what and is rather naive.

Biography: Kaarina was born in Taipaleenharju, a small village in rural Finland, in 2005. To them, all this conflict involving Superiors was simply something you heard about on the news and was happening in some extremely distant, far away land they’d never been to.

Unfortunately, Kaarina brought that world to their tiny little village. She was revealed to have powers even before birth while her mother was in hospital in Rovaniemi, as infrasound scans failed failed to display anything at all about her, even after the machine was checked for faults and a second was brought in to double check.

The full scope of her power was only revealed when they tried to fill in Kaarina’s birth certificate and found themselves unable to; the hospital tried to inform the UN Commission, but the call was apparently garbled so the Commission instead dispatched someone in person to evaluate the situation. It took a day or two for the Commission’s representative to arrive, be informed of the situation, and promptly be unable to record anything directly relating to the situation without it smudging or blurring. Irritated, the representative informed the Commission that they had a case that required personal observation, a phrase imprecise and vague enough to get around her power.

After recording the address of her parents, the Commission let them return home, with a pair of Commision agents assigned to monitor Kaarina arriving a few days later. Her parents weren’t happy, but at least they kept their child around. As Kaarina grew up, being followed by the occasionally-changing Commission agents became the norm. Some were friendly, some were hostile, some just didn’t talk. Her friends always asked why she had people following her everywhere, but she just called them her bodyguards; she thought she was special for having adults follow her everywhere. She knew she had a power, but never said anything about it; the news said powers were bad and evil, and she had a power but if she didn’t use it she wouldn’t be bad and evil.

As she became a teenager, the novelty of having adults follow her everywhere wore off. She couldn’t go out with her friends or parties or any of the fun stuff, and her friends gradually drifted away. She couldn’t get a card or a driver’s license, her power obliterating that information, and she gradually realised that her power would make living a normal life impossible, especially given having some Commission agents tracking her every move.

She moved out at the age of 17; unable to apply for university, she simply told the Commission agents she was moving to Oulu, had found someone who’d take payment in cash without question. The Commission checked over everything, found everything in order, and her agents followed her to Oulu. That was step one.

Of course, the Commision had their terms, and one of those was her getting notable white stripes tattooed onto her face. Although not a widely known sign for Superiors, it was one given to those who’s powers precluded information about them being stored by the Commission, and if anything that was the final straw for Kaarina.

Barely a day after moving to Oulu, she went to the police and claimed the Commission agents were stalking her. It was sorted out in a few hours, but a few hours were all she needed to grab some stuff, her skis, and start skiing northwards and across the Swedish border. Using makeup to do her best to hide the white lines on her face, she became a nomad of sorts in Europe; hitchhiking where possible, claiming to be on the way to Switzerland to go skiing. Food was a problem, so she started to rob petrol stations and supermarkets for food at first, and then money, and then just whatever she wanted. Her power meant that although everyone knew it was ‘the person who nothing can be written down about’, none of the police forces of Europe could communicate that to each other and since the crimes were fairly minor and small scale, they generally were forgotten about.

She spent around a year and a half wandering across Europe, never really meeting any other groups or people she could consider to be friends. Her other personality first began to emerge in this period of isolation and loneliness, someone to talk to in the dark or by the side of a highway. Her ‘bright’ personality gradually took over, continuing the same methods of survival, but gradually finding others like her, Superiors on the run for survival. She began to stop covering the white stripes on her face, a branding that became a show of stubbornness and pride of sorts to her ‘bright’ personality.

Eventually, her little group of people came into contact with Specter, and were invited to join; some did, some didn’t fearing a trap; Kaarina joined, wanting somewhere where she could actually belong to for once, that and hopefully enable her to be able to live a normal life, eventually.

Vitals

Name: Katherine "Kat" Ryder
Gender: Female
Age: 16

Alignment: Hero

Build: 5'7" 125 lbs.
Appearance: Beautiful in the girl-next-door way, she wears her black, straight hair long and messy with a fringe covering one eye. Her physique is moderately curvy, and this is accentuated by her trademark outfit: black ripped skinny jeans, a band t-shirt, and an embellished black leather jacket.
Image

Abilities

Equipment: A bluish-white dagger (blade around 1ft. long, always razor-sharp) made of solid compressed air, a broken golden pocketwatch.

Primary Ability: Telekinesis - Kat has powerful telekinetic ability, capable of moving even a tank or watercraft with her mind. However, her power comes with several key limitations, mostly revolving around prior physical contact. While she can exert her power on things without touching them first, her power is far more like a hit from a baseball bat; a collision propelling it in one direction. She can theoretically affect any (non-living) thing with it, but the force she is capable of exerting without touch tops out at around 500,000 newtons (around the force of a car crash). An innate self-protection aspect of her power automatically scales how much force she affects non-touched objects with, limiting her to around 5-10 meters per second, with the higher the speed coming from the smaller the object physically is. No matter the object or force she impacts it with, her power will not damage the object in question, although its impact with her target will. It is far more difficult and tricky for her to use the blunt-force version of her power on moving objects; for example, she could push a speeding car far enough so that it wouldn't hit a pedestrian but she can't launch it into the air like with a stationary vehicle.

If she has had recent physical contact with the object that she's using her power on, however, she has far more fine control, being able to actually manipulate its position, choose the speed at which it moves, levitate it, etc. Her power does not work on living things whatsoever.

Details

Nationality: American
Hometown: Chicago, the Windy City
Sexuality: Bisexual

Skills: Quick-thinking and book-smart, assertive and honest, logical.
Flaws: Not cunning or particularly charming, stubborn, prideful and a bit self-righteous.

Personal

Personality: Katherine Ryder is exactly what you would expect a product of her childhood to be. Equal parts angry and afraid, she is very sure of herself and views most others as idiots and beneath her, despite her own crippling insecurities. She is proud of what she describes as her "self-loathing narcissism," simultaneously viewing her skills and powers above all others while also experiencing crippling jealousy and fear of her own inadequacy. Much like her superpowers, the regular teenage anxiety about one's place in the world is quite magnified in her case. She's emotionally closed-off and slightly cold, but she deeply hopes to find someone to attach herself to, although she refuses to admit it. She idolizes her late father and is absolutely convinced he was a hero at heart, despite his status as one of the most famed pre-Academy villains.

Biography: Born March 4, 2008 to Marilyn and Mark Ryder in a cozy townhouse in the heart of the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Kat had a relatively pleasant childhood, idolizing her father, who she understood to be a very important hero. In reality, her father was Aeolus, an incredibly powerful aerokinetic that spent several periods at #1 on the Commission's Most Wanted Villains list. Her mother was a woman he'd met in a meteorology graduate studies class he taught. Although Mark was not present for much of her early childhood, as many young children do, she was extemely attached to him, for whenever he was there, he provided wondrous gifts and doted on her. Unbeknownst to her, the middle-class life she lived, the kindly mother she playfully rebelled against, the father she yearned for more time with, would come to an abrupt end far sooner than she thought. When Kat was 10 years old, things began to change. The Commission was becoming more and more powerful and her father was having an increasing number of close calls with the law.

The gifts she was showered with began to dry up and their lives became harder and harder. Rather than the loving relationship her parents' possessed all her life, late-night arguments that would wake her on school nights became the norm. Her father would leave for extended periods, times where he'd go underground to avoid putting his family in jeopardy. The next three years were hard on her and her mother. Two and a half years went by before she saw her dad again, although on each birthday and all three Christmases a card was slipped under their door — not the door of the townhouse she'd spent her childhood in, but a cramped apartment just outside the Loop — with some money and well-wishes from her father. Part of her started to resent Mark, all of her resented her mother, and she began to act out in school. At last, just before her entrance to 8th grade, her father mysteriously reappeared. Apparently having retired from his job, they once again returned to a more comfortable life in a house outside the city. Things looked up for her. Her father taught her to look out for herself and her friends, and introduced her to the ideals of Robin Hood and the necessity of fairness.

Her parents still argued, however. And now she was at an age that she could understand it. Their life was financially unsustainable, apparently, as her father had retired and their money sources had dried up. Unsure of what to do or how to contribute, she began falling into depression and experimenting with drugs and sex at 14. Her father once caught her and rather than getting upset, he educated her on how best to go about it. The conversation was a renewal of their bond, setting them as inseparable for the remainder of his life. Their family's situation maintained itself, with her father spending an increasing amount of time out of the house again, attempting to hide from what she now knew to be the evil "Commission," that hunted those who fought for fairness as her father did. One fateful night when she was 15, she heard her father arguing with her mother about his desire to do "one last job," before going underground entirely to secure their future.

The following evening, she snuck out, following her father into the city, watching him don his costume and break into an art gallery to steal an important sculpture. However, he discovered her presence in his retreat. Angry for a passing moment at the interruption, he was instead proud of his daughter's tenacity. As they reached their house after evading a police chase, Mark arranged a pickup for his daughter to leave for the Academy, realizing she'd never be able to live a normal life if he was involved. However, before it could be carried out, the Commission surrounded their house. Mark surrendered, walking out, only to be immediately shot to death. In his dying moments, his daughter hugged him. That night was when her powers manifested, as she destroyed an entire unit of the Commission and immediately blacked out after. When she awoke, she was on a small skiff headed to the Academy.
