Hello hallo hullo, and welcome to a hard reboot/alternative of Tophat Empire's The Way Forward: A GATE RP. This is an RP based upon the GATE anime/manga/webseries/light novel by Takumi Yanai, but don't worry if you've never seen and/or read it - the premise is the important part. The premise of the GATE series is an excellent twist on the common 'isekai' (translated: 'another world') genre so popular in Japan, unfortunately the author could not stop worshipping the JSDF long enough to make something truly great from it, or make more than one or two characters out of anything besides wood and cardboard. The premise is that a portal to another world has opened in the heart of the old city of Istanbul, with what appeared to be an army straight out of fantasy fiction spilling out and indiscriminately attacking innocent civilians in an abhorrent and unprovoked attempted invasion. While the dragons and planes, orcs and mechs, and tanks and knights of the invaders eventually proved to be no match for the Turkish military, thousands still died in the attack and the world demanded action. Turkey asked NATO, and NATO asked the UN to help organise an international coalition to travel beyond the gate to identify and defeat the invaders, exacting just reparations while ensuring peace into the future. When the RP starts, the expedition has established a foothold on 'Alnus Hill', where the Gate on the other side is located and have fought off a determined offensive from the invaders - known as the Saderan Empire to the natives. In doing so, the UN has proven its conventional superiority, decimating the force that was many times its size, and is now preparing to launch long-term recon missions behind enemy lines, which is where our characters come in.

In the RP, you can choose to apply as a member of the NATO/UN expedition (a soldier, a war correspondent, a scientist, an engineer, a civil affairs officer, an oilman, a real estate agent, a businessman, whatever, anything goes) or as a native of what is being called the 'Special Region'. If you apply as a native, I ask that you remember that Earth is decades ahead of Sadera - even with magic at their disposal, though Saderan magic in this situation does manage to shrink the gap a fair amount. The most powerful Saderan computer is comparable to our Colossus 1, after all, and even their most advanced magically-guided rockets have a range of one hundred kilometers at the most, and are launched either from massive armored trains or by landcruisers. The focus of the RP will be on the UN however, so if you want to be a native not in contact with the UN, you're not going to have an easy time of things. You, the characters, will help determine the path of both worlds. The UN/Nato forces must decide whether to come as conquerors, as peacekeepers, or as wolves disguised as men. Meanwhile, interests on Earth and in the Special Region will have their own goals their own ideas, their own plans for both worlds, and will try to shape things themselves.

January 2nd, 2019: the day that changed two worlds.

The world awoke to images of the attack on Istanbul plastered across their screens. Millions sat glued to the feeds, unable to turn away. There are a few days in each generation that become seared into the collective memory - a 'fixed point in time' if you will, but January 2nd was to be a day that came to define even more than that. It was a scene of bloodshed and horror, of innocents running in terror rather than be cut down where they stood. Police dispatches, initially expecting to face a small terrorist cell, came face to face with a sight that beggared belief, that defied comprehension. Glistening knights and cavalry alongside tanks polished to shine in the sun, soldiers in rank with bayonets affixed and green-skinned beasts arrayed in an army many times their number.

Outnumbered and woefully unprepared, the police were forced into a full retreat, pulling back along with the civilians they fought desperately to protect. Uniformed officers were run down by warriors on horseback, vehicles chased down and obliterated by tanks and behemoth iron walkers, fleeing mobs were slaughtered by hails of bullets, and entire buildings were set ablaze by the marauding forces' high explosives, all while the world watched. It took hours before the military could mobilise a concerted defence, the deafening boom of supersonic jets and the steady thumping of rotor blades signalling the arrival of the Defence Forces. The invaders, dressed in cotton and riding vehicles with simple steel armor, didn’t stand a chance against machine gun fire and the modern anti-tank warhead. But by the time the military and police had mopped up the last stragglers, declaring the city secure, the damage had long been done. Official estimates put the death toll at north of six thousand, with still more injured or missing, and that didn't even include the slaughtered and captured invaders, of which there were hundreds. By far it was the worst attack on a NATO nation in decades, its body count outdoing 9/11 by almost threefold.

As the shock and horror subsided, the grief gave to anger as the world demanded action, blood for blood. The Turkish military declared the entire city centre as off-limits, revealing to the world their discovery of the Gate: a portal that had appeared from thin air, opening as a passage from which the invaders marched. The government called upon the world to join it in an expedition through the structure, to band together as a single people to stand firm and ensure that such a tragedy would never happen again.

And the world answered.

Desolate and abandoned in the days following the invasion, Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district transformed into a hub of activity as military forces gathered from around the world under the banner of the United Nations. National divisions were pushed aside as a grand coalition was being formed: Turkish soldiers welcomed Israeli soldiers, while Russian forces disembarked from their transports in tandem with American marines. The UN force was composed of some the best the world had to offer, and by the coming of March, they were ready to embark into the unknown. Passing through the gate, the UN force immediately encountered hostile resistance, hardly able even to pause for a breath in the new world before the people of Earth engaged in their first battle across the Gate. A month of combat followed, the expedition digging itself in and fortifying its position as the native army threw itself against them to no avail. Thousands of native soldiers died in one of the most one-sided military battles in history, their overwhelming numbers doing little against the advanced technology of Earth.

Now, with their base on Alnus Hill secured for the time being, the UN forces are preparing to mount their first reconnaissance missions into this new world.

Who are you in this story, a soldier of earth, sent as a explorer and soldiers. Or maybe a citizen on whatever lies on the other side. How will you shape the history that is being made, for both worlds?

RP samples are required except from people whom I have invited via TG, and members of The Madhouse or The Pub.
Bad behavior in the OOC will be punished according to how bad the behavior was.
Godmodding will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Godmodding is Treason, Treason is punishable by death.
Try to stay active in the OOC as well as the IC, and TG me if you won't be able to post for a while.
I expect everyone to make posts of decent quality. Try for longer posts, though for dialogue you can keep it short.
Keep it PG-13, or else. Swearing is permissible, violence is permissible, but it has to stay PG-13.
This RP operates on a three-strike system. Three strikes and you're out - something I don't want to have to do, really.

The Saderan Empire
The dominant force in the world of Falmart (referred to by the UN as the Special Region), the Empire is a grand state ruled by an aristocracy and a semi-elected Senate composed of nobility - although the Emperor himself retains absolute authority. Government-wise, it is somewhat diverse - in cities, and areas where the might of the Empire is most visible, it borders on fascist, with a cult of personality around the Emperor almost as intense as the worship of the many gods - the only legal religion. In areas more rural, more distant, or in much of Sadera's colonies, it tends more towards an almost feudal-like serf-based system. It wields the largest, most powerful, and most advanced military on the Continent and its conquests and vassalisation of many of its neighbours and continents across the seas are a source of great national pride. In terms of tanks, aircraft, ships, and walkers employed, not to mention giants, orks, and genetically engineered mounts, the Saderan Empire military is nearly three times the size of its nearest opponent. Technologically, the Saderan Empire can be compared roughly to that of Earth in the early days of World War Two overall, with a healthy dose of dieselpunk and biopunk thrown in. The war chests and tributes from its many conquests have gone to great public works efforts in its core cities that have made them glistening gems of the world, testaments to human superiority. It is primarily a human state, with Imperial nobility primarily human save for vassalised non-human kingdoms. Non-humans are usually treated as second-class citizens, above only slaves, especially those who were conquered forcefully and refused to surrender to the Empire's clear might. In terms of land area, the Empire's claims on its home continent is comparable to the USSR in terms of size, and can mobilise an impressive amount of manpower and economic clout compared to its rivals in the Special Region. Overall, counting all colonies, the Saderan Empire is slightly larger than the British Empire at its peak. When the Gate on Alnus Hill opened, the Empire saw an opportunity for further expansion and sent a force through in a preemptive strike. The results have thus far proven catastrophic, and with the propaganda machine of the Empire coupled with silencing orders and a clampdown on news media both print and radio (much of which is state-owned anyway), most of its citizens remain in the dark of the scale of its losses against the UN. The Empire is quickly shifting itself to a major war footing as it seeks to battle for its very survival, its enemies looking on as the Empire on which the Sun never sets seems to have bitten off more than it can chew.

The United Nations
Founded in 1945 following the Second World War, the United Nations has grown into the largest intergovernmental organisation in human history. With 193 member states and a stated goal to promote peace and stability throughout the world through international cooperation. While the UN does not field a military or act as a state in and of itself, it can call upon member states to deploy peacekeeping forces as requested by the Security Council although over time it has increasingly taken on the burden of social and economic development as well as global security. Headquartered in New York within the United States of America, the United Nations is the primary organisation responsible for overseeing the Peacekeeping operation within the Special Region, the largest such UN operation since the Korean War. The member-state of Sweden is the de-facto lead of the operation since the operation centres for the deployment are based upon its territories, although it is a highly multi-national effort. While the UN has been praised as a force for good - having received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 - it has also been criticised as a corrupt, ineffectual bureaucracy that seeks to maintain the status quo. While the UN can technically claim a collective territorial expanse, economic and military power that dwarves that of the Empire, it is divided among its member states. Even this early into the operation, behind the scenes divisions are forming between the decentralised UN member states as some seek to better position themselves or take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Special Region. Time will tell if the UN will maintain its unified stance as time goes on, or whether its role as a peacekeeper in the Special Region will give way to new, updated goals.

I'm honestly unsure if I want to have Ricardo Erdogan survive the initial attack. On one hand, his Antics^TM would provide for interesting scenarios, on the other hand, having his party run around like a chicken with its head detached after his death, possibly resulting in Turkey losing its grip on the Kurdish and Armenian regions to the east, would also create interesting scenarios.

Of course, this is all assuming Istanbul (not Constantinople) stays in the lead.

It will make interaction a bit difficult since most of the characters will probably be footsoldiers and the like.

I'm more worried about Turkey being...well Turkey. They really don't like anyone. See: Gulf War Part 2: Revenge of the Bush. Turkey denied us use of their airspace to transport the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division into Northern Iraq because fuck us.

The main reason is that Istanbul, being a highly strategic location A and B, full of international tourists, resulted in a lot of people from a lot of countries getting killed. Now by 2019 the Trumperor along with a number of powerful NATO members (and Poland) along with other great world powers were pretty tired of Turkey's shit. So NATO basically implied they'd be kicked off Team America if they didn't allow a coalition (as this was pretty clearly an act of war against multiple entities), and a number of other great powers implied Turkey would be on their shitlist if they (the UN) didn't at least help. Erdogan is power hungry but he isn't dumb.
