Read the premise. If you want, feel free to break down the small arms. I am offering plenty of leeway with the lore.

WIP as I'm still ironing out some details with you. And also cause I need sleep.

EDIT: Let me know if it works, Cy.

SOL FEDERAL NAVY
NR-134 - COURSER FILE

Image

All information herein is open to SCL - GAMMA only. Unauthorized viewers will be prosecuted by the Navy Judiciary.

BASIC INFORMATION

Name: Josiah Caleb Monroe
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Photo ID:Image
Citizenship: Sol-Federation, residency records on Luna
Affiliation: Federal Navy
Rank: Lieutenant
Marital Status: Single

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: Brash, compulsive, cocky with an inflated ego would best describe Josiah. A skilled pilot in his own right, Josiah built his upon his success as a sure-fire way to be disliked by most in almost all squadrons that he has served in. Overly confident in his abilities and tactical acumen, Josiah as been reprimanded at least twice for borderline insubordination were it not for the successful outcome of disobeying orders. A hothead because of his compulsiveness, Josiah would rather 'shoot first, ask later', and break from team if necessary. Now under the command of LTC Boothe, it remains to be seen if Josiah can tow the line with the seasoned veteran. This would not be their first assignment together, as the last was less than a stellar outcome (in which Josiah personally harbors against Boothe and is convinced it is because of the LTC that he has not been able to rise up in rank).

In keeping to his arrogance, Josiah also exhibits a typical deep seated insecurity and classic behavior of one afraid of failure. His last assignment may have hindered his advancement, but it has never been a question of his skill so much as it has been about his maturity.

Despite his less than appealing personality, Josiah is capable of profound loyalty.

Likes: Cooking, hard liquor, mainly. Other interests are mainly to 'keep himself busy'.
Dislikes: Anything that involves tinkering with his plane. He leaves that for the engineers and repair crews.
Fears: Acarophobia
Goals: Has no real goal; a skilled pilot with himself as the only impediment, Josiah sees the short term in advancing beyond his current rank - if only to prove others wrong of his potential.
Personal Strengths (3):
  • Tactical Analysis - The primary attribute to his success, Josiah is able to quickly analyze a situation and act upon it. The hindrance of it being his inability to communicate with others, assuming his squad would simply intuit his actions.
  • Ace - Qualified pilot with an impressive record in space and aerial combat. Despite his exemplary service, they are also marked with criticisms to his methods and inability to follow orders.
  • Decisive - Despite his flaws, Josiah is capable and willing to carry out decisions once his mind is made. Hesitation being the key in life or death, Josiah has never shirked away from a decision and has defended his actions throughout his career - for better or worse.
Personal Weaknesses (3):
  • Arrogance
  • Obstinate
  • Other weaknesses inherent in personality outline

I was still working on creating a character to be the ship's quartermaster when it occurred to me that the Psychiatrist position on the ship would perhaps be even more interesting. Here's the app in progress. UPDATE: Completed!

Citizenship: Sol Federation
Affiliation (SolFed or Civilian Contractor): Sol Federation Navy

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: Never the person to immediately light up a room, yet always remembered kindly by all those who speak to her. While not an aggressively outgoing personality, she is able to be outgoing when the occasion calls for it and capable of understanding the value of silence when needed. Yui has a knack for understanding the feelings of those around her and uses this intuition to actively to gain the trust of the those she meets. She is a kind-hearted, compassionate, and empathetic woman. The kind of person who seems better suited in academia than aboard a naval vessel. Nonetheless, she is possessed with a deep sense of duty to others that compel her well beyond her usual comfort zones.
Likes: Singing, cooking, research, organizing events for others.
Dislikes: Being underestimated by others, vulgar personalities, and lack of personal freedom.

Personal Strengths (3): Yui is highly empathetic, talented in her work, and is highly determined in her duties.
Personal Weaknesses (3): Although she has reached a sufficient level to pass the basic combat qualifications in Officer Development School, she is not a very skilled shooter or close combat specialist. History (Excerpt from transfer application interview):
"I don't have an amazing story. At least I don't think it's worth much of your time, but I'll make my report for the record. Maybe someone will read it someday, or just maybe, whatever I do from here onwards can turn my life so far into a footnote in the "early life" section. Now there's a thought.

My name is Sakamoto Yui, or Yui Sakamoto out here. My family name is Sakamoto, a very common name in Japan, and my given name is Yui. The kanji—the Japanese character used to write my name 'Yui' means 'only' as in 'only one'. I know that the intention was to emphasize my own unique qualities, but all my life I've only felt like one of the most ordinary people in the world. I was born in a small city named Nabari in the Mie Prefecture of Japan, about an hour outside of Kyoto by train.

We live in the greatest period of scientific discovery and human exploration ever known in history, but I had the misfortune to be born in a family that hasn't known change real change for the last few hundred years. You see my family owned a crafts business, making traditional dyed textiles through Katagami. It's kind of complicated, but all you need to know is this fact—Japan opened to the modern world in the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century. At that time our family had already been running our business for nearly a century. We've been at it since then. Japan experienced a large population shrinkage, mass automation and AI changed the entire course of human development, and millions took to the stars to find their future. The good thing about traditional crafts is that it's very stable. The downside is maybe that it's too stable.

I feel a little embarrassed talking about it sometimes. In the 24th century, I don't think there are a whole lot of people who can still say that their family has lived in a place for more than 20 generations. I wanted to leave, I wanted to see the world, but I didn't end up far. I was accepted into Tokyo University's Medical Department after High School, and I thought this was my chance to help make a difference. My chance to see the world. Going to Todai (that's the short name for Tokyo University) was hard and also a lot of fun, but there's really nothing much to say about it. I was probably one of the most boring students ever. I studied hard, binge-watched television shows, and occasionally went out with friends. I ultimately graduated with good grades, but somehow I found myself back home, in Nabari. I finished my residency in my local city hospital, and I got hired to work full time at the hospital afterward.

Everything was okay—and I really mean it. I know so far I've made it out to seem like I'm a spoiled girl who just wants to go out and 'see the world' but really that isn't it. I was—and still am fine with becoming the next generation to live and die in the ancestral home. I didn't think anything was wrong with staying close to my family roots, and my brother didn't either when he became an apprentice to my mother. I didn't mind staying in Japan for school—Tokyo University is after all still one of the best public universities in one of the greatest cities in the Federation. I most certainly didn't dislike the work that I did. I loved and cherished everything. I chose to study to become a Clinical Psychiatrist because I wanted to help people, and I'm good at what I do. At least I'd like to think I'm no worse than any other doctor.

Only two years ago, a few days after my 27th birthday, something clicked inside of me. It was like I'd been dreaming this whole time. My life had been going so smoothly, so uninterrupted. I'm not sure what it was exactly. Nothing changed in my life. There wasn't any catalyzing event that made me join the Federation Navy. Maybe it was exactly because nothing had changed that I started to realize my life was flowing down a singular narrow track. If there is one characteristic that I would say define Japanese people, it is the belief that we are one team (this mindset, by the way, hasn't helped the national mental health very much but that's a story for another time). For hundreds of years, my family has served no one but ourselves and our small little community. We'd been comfortable for so long, and I started thinking that there had to be some better way to 'do my part' so to speak. Some better way to live than to set myself on autopilot until retirement.

My life's path up to that point was a well-trodden one. It wasn't just a little dirt path packed firm by the collective weight of the feet that have stepped onto it. It was a mag-lev rail line direct to Tokyo Station. In the span of a single evening, I derailed that train. I was surfing the web when I came across an advertisement for the navy while watching a video. One thing led to another and I found out about the Navy Medical Corps Program. The next morning I called the local recruiter's office and within a few weeks, I had signed the contract to commit myself to the Sol Federation Navy. By the next month, I was on my way to Officer Development School on Mars. By Christmas, I was a commissioned officer in the Federation Navy.

In the last two years, I've learned how to salute, how to shoot a rifle, and how to carry myself as an officer of the Federation Navy. I've done things I never imagined myself capable of doing. I was so scared when we had to do our first emergency spacewalk drills, I wanted to drop everything and run home. Fortunately, leaving the Navy isn't so easy. Serving on the SNSS Vigilance has been an absolute honor, but we've all seen the reports. People are going missing in the Perseus Arm, and the few we do find have had irreversible damage done to their minds.

Look, I know I'm no warrior. I know I've had it easy even after joining the Navy, the SNSS Vigilance is practically a hotel compared to what's out there. I know that the people here need me, but I also know that they need people out there too. I've heard what they're saying about the Coursers. That they're suicide missions. I don't want to die, but we're not going to learn about how to fix our people's broken minds by staying well away from the danger.

I know this sounds cliche, but I want to make a difference—and this time I know that I can. Please consider my application to transfer, and I hope the Command staff will see the merits. We're a team, and we need all of our talents and abilities at our disposal to defeat this threat. Thank you for your time and consideration"

Hey Cy, I am thinking about making a second character if you need more command roles filled: what positions would need to be filled from this point?
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

Still need a Pilot for the Boadicea, as well as a Yeoman and Navigator. Kinda hoping that Norv or Rudaslavia swoop in and take Captain, given that he played a good captain in What Lies Below. Basically, take a role if you think you can make it relevant.

EMPLOYMENT RECORD

Requested Roles (Pick 3): Captain, Executive officer, [/b]
[/blocktext]

1. The man is twenty-six, while his subordinate officers are older than he is, and being career soldiers, they've got the jump on a twenty-six-year-old, four years out of an Academy.

2. Refer back to Point One; in four years, could Locksteed have reasonably progressed to one rank below Captain?

3. His strengths label him more as a ground-pounder. How'd he swing command of a large vessel, and have the lives of hundreds of Sailors, Marines, and Airmen placed in his hands? Boadicea is a ship charged to an officer with extensive experience in naval warfare.

Here's the gist: Locksteed is more of a Lieutenant, probably transferred from either the Marines or a Combat Arms navy outfit. Given that he is shifting from an environment in which he has honed his skills, to one involving an intricate understanding of ship navigation and the perils of space, would it not make sense for Locksteed to serve instead as a Bridge Officer? He'd be given responsibilities and tasks aboard the Boadicea, but he is also greatly learning a new occupation.

All that aside, this is too fanciful and bland for my tastes already. Read Anowa's app, as well as mine or James's. I want your best.

SOL FEDERAL NAVY
NR-134 - COURSER FILE

Image

All information herein is open to SCL - GAMMA only. Unauthorized viewers will be prosecuted by the Navy Judiciary.

BASIC INFORMATION

Name: Edward Fitzpatrick, LFD, PL1, BPharm, MBChB.
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Photo ID (or written description):Image
Citizenship: Sol Federation; Registered with a residence in Toronto
Affiliation: Federal Navy.
Rank:Lieutenant
Marital Status: Married

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality:
Likes: Honesty, laughing, Tap Dancing, Opera, Christmas Carols, Reading, Writing, Chess, and music.
Dislikes: Dishonesty, tricks,
Fears: Acrophobia
Goals: To Survive, learn and help
Personal Strengths (3):
1. Educated

Lieutenant Fitgerald has spent the last 12 years learning and putting that knowledge into practice. He has a Diploma of Funeral Services, Primary Care level 1 Paramedic license, Bachelor of Pharmacy with a minor in supply chain management, and a Medical Doctorate with a minor in Latin. He is well read. He can speak English fluently, French reasonably well, and can understand Latin reasonably well, enabling him to act as a limited translator if need be and read more historical books and documents. He has 1 year of experience as a medical officer, 4 years experience as a medical units logistics officer, and 6 years as medical technician, with plenty of experience in the field and the classroom.

2. Disciplined

Lieutenant Fitzgerald has gone through plenty of military training, including Cadets, basic training, basic officers training, medical training, and environmental training among others. He usually follows the chain of command. He has undertaken focused activities such as instructing classes, going on day long hikes and canoe trips, performing funeral services for the military and the public, and has been faced with situations where he has needed to patch people up in the field or a hospital with whatever tools were available.

This can be seen in his professional manner, as well as his handling of firearms and artillary (Although the later hasn’t really been handled by him since his days in cadets).

He is someone who is calculating and analytical, allowing him to look at a situation, see what is occuring and what is needed to occur, and plan ahead. He can maintain his composure in a tough setting.

3. Optimistic

Lieutenant Fitzgerald is cheerful. He can look on the bright side of things and look for a good future.

Personal Weaknesses (3):

1. Edward tends not to speak in a direct manner, and instead tends to speak in a vague or downplayed manner. Sometimes, even a major incident can be downplayed as minor when communicated to others.

2. Edward has Acrophobia and consequently doesn't like high environments such as cliffs. This is improved when he has stable ground underneath him, but when in such an environment, he might be less effective than others in the same situation.

3. Although he does have experience with short term deployments, and classroom training, he does not have a lot of experience on long term deployments.

History:
Edward Fitzpatrick was born 31 years ago on December 3rd 2338 AD. His parents were Charles and Lilith (McWilliams) Fitzpatrick. He first got involved with outdoors activities when he was 5 years old and entering kindergarten at the prestigious Upper Canada College school for boys. His Father being a respected Tailor and land lord, and his mother being involved with the Petroleum industry as a land lady they were able to afford that for him.

He would get involved in 2 activities at that young age. Scouting, and helping his dad in his shop. Beaver scouts was a nice activity to perform during the week. He was able to hang out with friends, and have fun. His Dad also helped him to sew his badges on his uniform, and mend any rips that it got in it. When he was 8, Edward would transition into Cub scouts, and he would become interested in playing the piano. His parents would purchase a Piano for him to practice on and he would play on it for about on average around 30 minutes a day, twice per week, for the 17 years, and recieved help from a neighborhood teacher during many of those years.

When he was 10 he finished Piano rank 1. This was an exiting time, and he was able to move on to more challenging lvl 2 music. At this time, Edward saw an old movie with Fred Astaire tap dancing called Swing time. He liked it and decided to try learning how to tap dance. Around this time his Dad gave him a new responsibility. He was allowed to work the cash register with supervision. When he was 11 he aged out of Cub scouts.

To complete the Bronze level he used his Cadet experience for volunteering, Field training exercises for the camping portion, expedition for the physical portion, and started Acting to develop a skill. He ended up enjoying it and got involved with school plays later on. For completing the Bronze level he was given a certificate by the mayor of Toronto.

When he turned 15, his Grandfather allowed him to help with starching that hats. In Cadets Edward was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and given the status of 2nd in command of a Platoon. That summer he attended the basic marksmanship summer course. he learned how to shoot accurately, and clean his rifle.

When he was 16, Edward could celebrate again as he finished Piano rank 3, moving on yet again to more difficult piano playing music.

In grade 7, at the age of 12, started getting into the military. He joined the 105 streetville Royal Canadian Army cadets at the Rank of Cadet. It was a youth group devoted to engaging youth and tied to the local artillery regiment of the Sol Federation. He put his sewing skills to good use sewing his badges on, learned how to polish his boots, and iron his uniform. That summer he was able to spend a few weeks in a basic training summer camp going over cadet skills.

In 2351, Edward officially became a teenager. He turned 13, and finished Piano rank 2. It was another achievement to be celebrated. That year his Grandfather would help him make hats. In cadets he was promoted to the rank of Cadet Lance Corporal, and stood out from his fellow cadets by joining up with the drill team. That summer he would attend Basic Drill and ceremonial summer course, and practise his military drill and his skills with polishing ironing and sewing.

At the age of 14, Edward was promoted to Cadet Corporal and was distinguished by becoming the Commander of a section of a Platoon. Assisting the platoon sergeant with call-outs and other duties. His Dad gave him new duties such as helping to measure clients. That summer he attended the basic expedition summer course and learned about camping and hiking. One of the most notable events of the year though, was that Edward participated in the Duke of Edinburgh award program - a program established Prince Phillip hundreds of years ago during the 20th century.

During the year he would encourage the Platoon with their drill, studies, and uniform maintenance, helping each of them when needed to constructively know what they could do to improve and how they can do it. That summer he attended the basic marksmanship summer course. he learned how to shoot accurately, and clean his rifle.

When he was 16, Edward could celebrate again as he finished Piano rank 3, moving on yet again to more difficult piano playing music. Building on his enjoyment of the Piano and Acting, he started taking Opera lessons. That year he was Promoted to Staff Sergeant and given leadership of his Platoon. His Dad would provide him the opportunity to now help with the needlework of his clients clothes, helping to mend and repair them. He would continue with his Duke of Edinburgh program and achieve the level of silver, receiving a certificate from the Premier of Ontario. That summer, Edward would go to a summer course and learn how to instruct cadets in their Drill and maintain their uniforms.

In 2355 AD, at the age of 17, Edward was promoted to the Rank of Cadet Chief Warrant Officer, and was given command over 2 of the 4 Platoons in the Cadet force. His Grandfather also allowed him to help with the making of the hats, showed him how to make a top hat, and his Father allowed him to make his own suit for a client. A suit which his father judged to be acceptable to present to a client and the client found acceptable. Edward Graduated from Upper Canada College, saying goodbye to his teachers, classmates, and signing a few yearbooks and recieving some signatures in turn. That summer he would attend a course on instructing cadets on going on an expedition.

At the age of 18, Edward started learning about how to direct a funeral at Humber College, and stopped helping at his Grandfathers hat shop and dads Tailor shop. In cadets he was promoted to Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major. He was now in charge of the whole of the cadet force in his unit. He encouraged a mentorship system to develop, and he would help with planning the Field training expeditions. That year, he would be awarded the Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh award, receiving his Certificate from the King of England. He attended his final Cadet summer camp that year, learning how to instruct cadets in their Air Rifle Marksmanship. He learned how to help them aim better, and maintain their rifles.

In 2357 AD at the age of 19, Edward aged out of Army Cadets. It was a big send off complete with story telling of some of the humorous and embarrassing things he was involved in at Cadets. Interested in continuing with outdoor activities he joined Rover Scouts. That year was his second year in the Funeral Director Diploma and he was able to get another work experience term in the winter. He Joined the Military Reserves 25 Field Ambulance, starting as a Seaman Recruit, and attended Basic Training that Summer.

When Edward turned 20, he finished Piano rank 4, celebrating with a dinner out with his family.
He continued participating in camping and hiking trips with Rover Scouts, however that year he would Attend Medical school with the reserves in the spring and Summer, HealthED in the fall which would grant him his level 1 Primary Care paramedic status, and the Maintenance of Clinical Skills during his winter funeral director Practicum.

At the age of 21, he started attending the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy. Minoring in Supply Chain Management. That summer he attended Basic Military Officer training Summer course in the Sol Federal Armed Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, for 15 weeks. Upon completing the BMOQ course he was promoted to Officer Candidate, and became a full Medical Technician in the 25 Field Ambulance.

When he was 22, Edward did not have very much knowledge of the French language. This was an issue as for the Canadian Region it was a second official language, and a requirement to have knowledge of. He attended 4 months of Official Second Language Training (French) that Summer. Still not entirely fluent, he attended the same course the following summer.

At the age of 24, Edward attended summer introductory occupational training for the Logistics Officer qualification at the Sol Federal Armed Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario.
Upon its completion he was promoted to Ensign. This was celebrated by his family by a dinner with everyone gathered together.

In 2363 AD, at the age of 25, Edward finished Piano Rank 5, the last Piano level he would complete to date. That spring he would get married to his wife, and they would have 4 children to date. They would go for a honeymoon to the Islands of Hawaii for a week and then the Resorts on Titan. After the Honeymoon he attended a nine-week summer Naval Environmental Training Program held at the Naval Officer Training Centre in Victoria, British Columbia.

When Edward was 26, he celebrated the birth of his first child, his graduation from Pharmacy school, and his appointed as the Supply Officer of the 25 Field Ambulance Unit.

In 2365 AD, at the age of 27, Edward Aged out of Rover Scouts, and celebrated the birth of his second child. He started his 1st semester studying for his Medical Doctorate. A fan of history and the history of warfare and medicine, Edward decided to minor in Latin. That summer would be spent attending the Sol Federal Armed Forces Medical Services School in Borden, Ontario. Upon its completion Edward would be Promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

When he was 28, Edward celebrated the birth of his third child, and attended summer environmental Training in Germany.

When he was 29, Edward celebrated the birth of his fourth child, and attended summer Environmental Training in Zimbabwe.

At the age of 30, last year, Edward attended his final year at the University of Toronto Medical School. He would graduate in June of that year and attended Environmental training in Mahon Station. At the end of the summer he would started active duty. After Starting active duty he would leave the 25 Field Ambulance as it was a reserve unit. He started working in Mahon Station, completing his 1 year post graduation internship. After graduating from medical school, and being awarded his Medical Doctorate, he became a Full Medical Officer. In recognition of this he was awarded with a Promotion to the naval rank of Lieutenant.

In the present year of 2369 AD, Edward is 31. This year he left Mahon Station, joined the Crew, moved into the ship with his family, and is looking forward to his first long term Deployment Trip.

He won’t take kindly to a fellow scientist. This’ll be interesting.

A conversation with Cy has led to my decision to apply for the position Research Director. So the scientist vs. scientist conflict is sure to be even more intensified by the bureaucratic structure of the Research Department.

BASIC INFORMATION
Image

Name: Hanno Kleinman
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Photo ID:
Standing at 5’8”, Hanno is within most standards for persons in the military. His physique, irregardless of his injury, is one of a trained, able-bodied soldier, something he takes with a little bit of pride. Hanno’s hair, brown, is kept neat and tidy about his head. Multiple scars can be seen about his body, evidence of his medals and how he earned them.
Citizenship:
- Sol Federation
- Mars, Colonial
Affiliation: Civilian Contractor
Rank: N/A

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality:
Professional, professional, professional. Despite his civilian status, Hanno prides himself on acting in the role of a Marine Corps Rifleman. While he likes to make a joke every once in a while, the man takes far less in the way of bullshit than one might expect. He’s well and truly capable of staying quiet while superiors yell at him or otherwise blames him for something that might not be his fault.
Likes: Sol Federation Marine Corps, Fellow “Cripples”
Dislikes: Alcohol, Drugs, Mismanagement by Superiors
Fears:
Hanno’s greatest fear is that he will be incapable of providing support to those whom he might call comrades, or rather those who he will be calling comrades. He fears that he will not be able to be as he was before, in soldiering.
Goals:
An innate goal he has is to prove to himself that he is still capable of performing all the functions and responsibilities of a Sol Federation Marine, though that’s something behind the psyche. In his greater opinion, Hanno wishes to fight as he once did, to make a difference despite it all.
Personal Strengths (3):
  • Rugged Reliability: Hanno stands his ground, regardless towards injury or enemy. He’s not one to run away, nor one to stick his head in the nearest ditch and hope every single issue in his life will simply disappear.
  • Soldier’s Soldier: He’s fully capable in both ranged and hand-to-hand combat with most standard Sol Federation weapons, though the man will admit to preferring the shotgun towards the battle rifle any day of the week. Basic First Aid is also known, supplemented by his medical training in the civilian world.
  • Breacher: Give the man a door and he’ll more than likely be able to knock it down. He’s fully trained in explosives and breaching charges and the application of said charges to make a neat little hole for neat little people.
Personal Weaknesses (3):
  • Man The Line: Hanno’s tendency to stand his ground makes for a stubborn bastard who prefers to hold-out with a knife, ready to stab the next bastard, to giving-up or performing tactical retreats. His faith in the reinforcement is strong, as is his faith in his cover.
  • Walk Alone: His tendency to greatly dislike alcohol and drugs leads him a good bit farther away from most Marines. His social life, and therefore a good bit of his unit cohesion, suffers from that.
  • Crooked Man: Hanno’s injury ensures that he can most certainly not move as fast as most others, lending him to static roles rather than the highly mobile movements most Marines prefer.

History:
Born on SRP-LO-J-923, an orbital platform about Jupiter, in 2338 Hanno’s early experiences on the small station, population 730, was like that of a small town. Everyone knew everyone and crime was full of youth incidents, kids who didn’t know any better. If anyone dealt a crime, well, people were always aware that station security would’ve seen the thing happen, that it would be an hour before they came for what was lost. Crimes of passion were just as rare; many aboard the station were well-enough armed that a break-in or attempted murder would lead to a shootout. It was a small town, a community where the lines between family and town became blurred. Hanno’s parents were researchers, looking into better methods of fuel extraction and implementation with the volatile gases of the raging giant below.

He’d go to school like the norm, a few rooms clustered about the central axis, him and forteen just like him, and they’d learn every day. He’d come home, a home of two rooms, and maybe go out for a jaunt with friends, playing games and the like. It was a calm life, one where the growing influence of poverty, lack of funds, station degradation, never could touch them. They didn’t notice the holes opening in the walls, didn’t note it for danger or failure, didn’t mind the tape over it. They might just see another place to explore, another fortress to be built where they might defend against the monsters they made up, the evil wizards atop black castles with hooded robes. Scrap metal turned to toys, tiling to little shields. They played-away.

Hanno would really only notice when food turned sparse, when his mom’s face turned gaunt and her eyes slowly sunken. He’d ask her what was wrong and every time, she’d respond with a nothing and for just a brief moment, just an hour, just half of one, just a few minutes, her face would light-up and she’d play, make a joke, turn back to what she once was. The kid, just eleven, knew that it was just a mask, just a lie told to try and make him feel better, and it worried him. His father was, perhaps, just as worse. He just would never come home, save for late when Hanno was asleep.

There was an accident, that was the first news story people let-out. Mismanagement was the official line, that someone had taken a wrong procedure, that one of the workers had done something terribly incorrect. An explosion had rocked the station, at the time, isolated to a single holding tank. Nevertheless, shrapnel from it flew-out, shredding nearby sections, and by the time everything had been secured, fifty were dead, either from the impacts or from suffocation. It was suspected by the denizens that something else had gone wrong, that something had mechanically failed, though never suspected out loud. Hanno would hear his parents talking, late at night, talking of the conditions, of the fact that they wanted to leave, that they didn’t feel safe, that the contract was still in place and they couldn’t break it. They couldn’t break it.

The accidents, little ones, became more and more common. Spills would occur, or container breaches, or atmospheric fluctuations might plague a hallway or entire section. The station began to fall apart, everyone knowing it. Kids stopped going to school, stopped roaming the halls for fun, and families turned away from the community they once had. Hanno’s parents made him wear a portable breathing mask in case the scrubbers failed and he, too, barely went outside. It would all end in 2353, when a catastrophic failure of the main structural brace caused the entire station to begin to break apart, rending itself as it began to fall from it’s low orbit into Jupiter. Evacuations began immediately, aided only by a nearly SolFed Carrier Group, and they were saved. Hanno survived, though he lost much on that day. His mother died due to a severe head wound, shrapnel when a nearby pipe exploded, and they were transported to Mars.

There, at the refugee camp, Hanno’s father fell-away from his good graces. The man couldn’t stand the thought of his wife’s death, the thought that everything he had built, everything he had worked so very hard for, meant nothing, that they were still there with the rest of them, that they had risen not a singular inch. He drank heavily, barely home at all still, not wanting to look at his son. Hanno took to grief as well, but in a far more mechanical fashion. Emotions were simply blocked, pushed-away, and all he could see was what was in front of him, what was there for him to do. He had to get away, that was what went-through Hanno’s mind, get away and get out of the camp.

Hanno would, at the age of sixteen, join the Sol Federation Marine Corps with the forged approval of his father, whom was very, very drunk at the time, and be shipped-off to Earth. There he found a new world, one of damn angry people and sheer perfection. Everything was to be neat, tidy, and without fault, everything squared-away. Movements were to be crisp, replies crisp, and things were without fault. If there was ever a fault, it would be destroyed. Hanno found it just a bit comforting, in a weird way, just a bit happy.

He’d go-off, moving through school at the normal pace, participating in Boarding Training with some little bit of relish. It was fun, fun to get to perform in the simulations instead of running-around on the gunnery range to shoot at silhouette targets, instead of preparing one’s rack, and he treated it always as the real thing. It made him feel like an actual Marine, even if the instructors were always nice to point-out the differences between reality and the simulators. Hanno would eventually graduate, assigned to an older warship of the Zulu-class, though he was just as happy to get out of training and into the real world. He wouldn’t have to wait long for his first taste of action, though the act of boarding a vessel would be continued several times over in his career. The most interesting time was the boarding of an Armed Transport, the Romeo, a vessel just as packed with weapons and hull plating as it was filled with pirate thugs.

Hanno would eventually get to fight in real combat, deploying to Cancia for the siege there, where he would aid in the taking of a city before being assigned garrison duties. He’d be wounded there, though the injuries sustained would be remarkably light given how he was awarded the Purple Heart. Later-on the man would participate in Titan, wherein during a dropship deployment his craft would be downed by enemy ground fire. Hanno would engage the enemy even after leg wounds had halted his ability to walk, providing much-needed covering fire on the enemy to stop their advance upon his position. Despite blood loss, he would continue to hold the position until friendly reinforcements arrived. Taken aboard the SNV-Gallant, a supporting hospital ship, the man would be informed that his ability to walk would be forever impaired and that he would not stay with the Marine Corps.

He would be Honorably Discharged upon his return to Earth, after which the man worked with several security firms for small time banks and institutions while Hanno went to school in Berlin for medicine. Rated as an EMC and EMT, his interest would be peaked by the arrival of the SNV-Boadicea, applying for and getting a berth there.
