"You hold in your hand the future of the world"
- Raymond Poincare, President of France
It's 1948 and no one has fired a single shot. Not yet at least. The stakes are high as Europe points their guns at each other, waiting for the next move. China itself has split in the face foreign domination. Germany, once without allies, now sees itself with a handful of nations by their side as they continue to look towards their perfect world as the French mobilize in fear and the Soviets play catch up with the rest of Europe. Politics, technology, and society are changing. What that means will soon be seen.
SCENARIO
November 8th of 1923, inspired by the fascist march in Rome the previous year, NSDAP leader Adolf Hitler stormed Bürgerbräukeller in Munich, taking von Kahr and his colleagues hostage, declaring the ‘national revolution’, telephoning the former general, Erich Ludendorff on their success. As his supporters were sent to take government buildings in Bavaria, government troops were sent to disperse them. Ludendorff, as Hitler left to attend to other business, allowed for von Kahr and colleagues to leave, but soon the attempted coup was dying. Trying to keep the flame alive, Ludendorff and Hitler marched on the Defense Ministry building. As they closed in, they were stopped by State Police, where they exchanged fire. Hitler fled the scene after sustaining injuries and seeing his coup fail. He would soon be arrested, tried, and sentenced to 5 years in prison, but served less than a year. While in the prison, he wrote a portion of his autobiography, Mein Kampf.
Across the world in Asia, the Guangzhou-based Kuomintang launch the Northern Expedition. Chiang and his troops marched north. Soon began the purge of the left as they advanced. Communists and sympathisers arrested or executed as the offensive went north. Fengtian troops held resistance all the way up to Beijing over a span of 2 years. Japan, not to lose their influence in Manchuria, sends more aid in the form of arms, and military advisory groups. It was soon clear that they would lose Beijing, and regrouped in Manchuria. Chiang would claim the Northern Expedition a success. In attempts to centralise the Nationalist government and military, his warlords would soon renounce their allegiance and China divided again 2 years later, in the Central Plains War. Zhang Zuolin, looking to bounce back in the chaos, struck south, recapturing Beijing from Yan Xishan and attacked straight to Chiang’s territory.
Soon after, the market had fallen into a crash and the world was restless and powerful men came to power. The former coup leader, Adolf Hitler, was now Chancellor by appointment. 1933, the Reichstag caught fire, and by using his powers in government, stomped out political opposition, bringing the NSDAP to power. With the death of Hindenburg a year later, and the removal of his enemies, Hitler’s followers dominated the political scene. Nazis were on the rise in Austria. Seeing the rise of the Austrian-born Hitler take power, were empowered themselves. In 1934, they acted on a failed coup, against the leader Engelbert Dollfuss, narrowly meeting death at the hands of Austrian Nazis. To the south, Italian fascists saw the writing on the wall. A possible ally could've been, now a competitor on the European stage.
In Spain, a first clash of ideology came between the new fascist powers and the liberal republics, funneling in weapons and resources. Foreign legions and volunteers made their mark in the Spanish Civil War. For the next 3 years, the war tore up the Spanish country as the Nationalists and Republicans had each other in death grips
1938, the Wehrmacht, with orders from Hitler to take Austria, mobilized and marched into Vienna. Nations of Europe protested, including the Fascist Italy, seeing the German annexation of Austria as a step to demand the once Austrian lands now administered by Italy. Quickly, Dollfuss fled to the open arms of the Italians. Months later, Hitler demanded the Sudetenland and Europe was up and arms again. France and the United Kingdom were obliged to come to the aid of Czechoslovakia. Though, later down the line, the Chamberlain government would act weak on this approach, the French would not allow for this, especially as it showed through a rising, stronger Germany may be approaching. It seemed that war between the nations would come quick. Even though Austria had been somewhat of a success, opponents to the Nazis in the military would not have it.
The officer corps, fearing that Hitler would lead them to their doom, planned for a preemptive coup, to prevent a war with the Western powers, did their best to put the Nazi leaders under arrest. And under arrest they were. Wehrmacht officers removed the leadership and defused the Sudetenland affair, but had their own agendas in mind as they replaced the government with their own. Soon arose internal conflict. Conservatives and monarchists looking at which way to go from there. 1
December of 1938, at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for Chemistry, following nearly five decades of work, came the discovery of nuclear fission. Shortly after, the Heereswaffenamt previewed the project, and after it's review, sent it to another ministry, and putting funding elsewhere. This work's report would soon reach the ministries of the great powers, looking themselves to work on independent projects themselves.
Across the European plain, the Soviet Union was on the rise. Even though their government had been weakened from their early years, they were surviving and rising. They arranged for a leader sympathetic to the Soviet Union in the Xinjiang region. The entirety of the 30s showed the reach of the new regime, supporting uprising after uprising. In 1940, the Red Army forced their way into the Baltic states, deporting their leaders to camps in Siberia, and arranging for puppet governments in their place. They had now taken Karelia and other lands from the Finns and proved themselves against the Fengtian-Japanese coalition.
Almost less than a decade later, another great war has been avoided for the most part, though it seems like another conflict is just around the corner. Germany and Italy had themselves allied after their decade of disapproval. Japan's rising statist movements within the military are showing themselves more and more. The UK and France are gearing for a war they want no part of. The Soviet Union look to expand their interest, a buffer between them and Europe. The United States just sits across the pond, recovering from their own economic ordeals.

History - In 1914, a Balkan Crisis set off a series of events that would culminate into the First World War. After it had set off German mobilization against the Russian Empire, the French followed, poised against Germany. When war was declared, Germany moved through a neutral Belgium in a plan to swiftly take Paris. They would stop the German offensive with the help of the British at the Marne. For the next four years, the war went no where. During the beginning of the war, French
political factions unified to combat Germany. By 1917, no one wanted to fight any longer and mutinies and protests were common among those deployed. When Germany had peace dealt with the Russians, they focused their forces on a renewed offensive to finally defeat France. It was too late, and the combined forces of the U.S, Britain, and France, blunted the German offensive. Soon, they defeated the German Empire and armistice was signed.
France, coming out as a victor, they took back their previous loss from the 1870 war, Alsace-Lorraine. Germany was made to give large sums of reparations, and the French occupied the Saar and the Rhine. They took their colonies in Africa and took Ottoman Syria and Lebanon. When the Polish State came about, they supported them as a possible ally. They pacified Morocco in the Rif War. They had also, tried to get friendlier with the new democratic government of Germany.
The Great Depression came about in France in 1931. Though the economic hit wasn't too bad, the political consequence was enormous, leading to the Popular Front of Socialists and Radicals leading the government, but they themselves weren't faring much better at running the country. When it was seen that the Germany was becoming a threat once more, the French re-geared their military, jump starting their arms production. When war was narrowly avoided, by the political scene in Germany, the French army stood its guard. Increasing their policy of aiding the Poles and others in eastern Europe, they sought to safe guard France from any aggression. With the election of Reynaud as Prime Minister in 1940, rearmament and resistance against Germany was his cry under the Lebrun government. By his run for president in in 1944, he continued on to 1948, with the next election, seemingly to be in his favor.
