There may be more nations out there, the only way is to explore!
Any land unclaimed (i.e. White) is treated as barbarians unless specified.

Story: The year is 1500 and the world is at a turning point. What will explores fine in this New World? How will the people of the New World handle this change? That is up to you.

Rules:
No god moding, No meta gaming, and Mods rules are law with Nieblham having final ruling
THERE WILL BE EVENTS
1 IC year = 2 IRL weeks
You must make one post every 3 weeks or be declared in active
A nation that is 3 weeks inactive will erupt in a revolution
Technology advances along IRL timelines, yet players can invest in tech to get it a bit earlier than they might have otherwise.
IC thread will be up once we have 8 players
Failure to read any rules on this OP and/or any information provided by a mod is punishable by losing one's claims for the week.
Vahn and Grand Adruvain and Cassinopia are mods

Claim Rules:
Starting Claims must be at least 10 provinces and no more than 50.
New Players can claim NPCs
NPCs outside of Europe that don't have 50 claims can have more claims added to them (including other NPCs)
NPCs can be renamed by new players who claim them.
Black areas are unclaimable.
Must link an image of your claims in your post
No encirclement claims
Claims must be adjacent to each other.
Point of Diversion is 500 CE build your history around that and work with other players.
For claims and History first come first serve (THOUGH major time breaks can be overruled by a mod)
Claims can overlap (IC disputed border) but no more than 1 province deep.
Each nation is granted a starting bonus depending on their size.
History, Military, Population must be reasonable
If inactivity is high, the active players can vote to have the time skip forward a bit. This is to let time pass so the world will be different and new. The specifics of how this happen will be determined if it occurs.
IF YOU ARE JOINING LATE AFTER RP START: your history must fit in the history of the accepted players. You are still free to talk and discuss changes with them but only if all players involved agree.

Weekly claims
You can only claim white spaces (if you want another nation's land you'll have to do that IC either via war or some other way)
You have from 12 am Friday to 11:59 pm Sunday to make your claims otherwise you'll have to wait till next friday
You can claim 4 provinces
You must have access to the land you want to claim by sea or land uninterrupted by another player/NPC
The map will hopefully be updated by Tuesday
First come first serve, though disputed borders are still allowed.
Mods will approve of each claim.
NPCs will also make claims but they will make claims after players.
Players can react to other players/NPCs claims but wait till we approve the claim.
Claims take a while to fully control, take too much too quickly and the empire could collapse.

Bonus (These are permanent even if you grow bigger your starting bonus will remain the same):
10-19 Claims: Trade Empire: your nation has increased trade with nearby nations
20-29 Claims: National Identity: Your people have a stronger sense of national pride and unity
30-39 Claims: Military Bonus: One branch of your military can be fitted with extra troops
40-50 Claims: It’s good to be King: Your government collects more tax revenue

HISTORY
Make sure your nation's history matches with already accepted history
Accepted Players can always add more to history
NPCs have little written History so their history can be developed by any player wanting to app as them.

Application
NationStates Name: Vahn
IC Nation Name: The Republic of Genoa
Ruler: Doge Valerio Savio of Genoa
Flag? Flag!
Government Type: Merchant Republic
Capitol City: Genoa
Population: ~200,000
Military: (OOC: Placeholder, as data for this is hard to find.)
History:
Formed more than five centuries ago as an independent city state, the Republic of Genoa first rose to historical importance with initiation of the First Crusade (1096-1099), as Genoese vessels provided transportation and naval support to the crusaders throughout the conflict. Having been a major trade center prior, Genoa would flourish even more during Christendom's campaigns in the Levant, Iberia, and North Africa, with Genoa building trade alliances with the crusader states and the existent Christian powers in the Levant. The dawn of the 12th century would see Genoa in control of much the trade between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as it's dominance in the Western Mediterranean: Genoa would share this dominant position with the Republic of Venice, Genoa's principal rival.

Image
Siege of Antoich during the First Crusade

The 13th century would see Genoa further cement dominance in the West Mediterranean with the defeat of the merchant Republic of Pisa. This victory would see the islands of Corsica and Sardinia come under stable Genoese control. The merchant republic would also expand its' power along key trade routes with the purchase of way-stations and settlements in islands in the upper Aegean Sea, the expansion of Genoese power in Cyprus, Genoese conquest (alongside its' Christian allies in Iberia)
of Gibraltar, and the conquest of settlements in the Crimea. This expansion further established Genoese control - alongside Venetia - of trade between the Levant and Europe: Furthermore, of the Italian merchant republics, Genoa held uncontested dominance of trade between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Genoese trade also expanded throughout the rest of the Mediterranean, with Genoese merchants and bankers maintaining stations along the entire Mediterranean, the great European port at Flanders, and along the North African coast as far as just beyond the mouth of the Mediterranean.

Image
Old Genoese fortifications in the Crimea

The late 14th century would see a growth in Genoa's power, following conflicts with its' sister republic, Venice. While two the merchant republics often found themselves allied in the preservation of Italian dominance over trade in the Mediterranean, the sister republics often battled with each other for supremacy on the seas. From the mid 13th century to the late 13th century, open war would break out a number of times, the battles being exclusively naval affairs and each side resorting to piracy in their adversaries waters. This rivalry would come to a conclusive head in the War of Chioggia (1378 - 1381): Initiated by Venetian encroachment on Genoese routes to the Black Sea. Following a series of naval engagements, the Venetians would find their hold of the Adriatic lost. The war would conclude with the Battle of Chioggia, as an invading Genoan force seized the fishing port of Chioggia, located in the Venetian Lagoon itself and threatening Venice on its very doorstep. Failing to retake the Genoese foothold in their home waters after more than a year of siege, the Venetians sued for peace: The following treaty would force the Venetians to relinquish their growing foothold at the Bosporus Straits, surrender suzerainty of the strategic port of Ragusa to Genoa, and pay heavy reparations to Genoa. While this wouldn't be the end of Venice, it would firmly establish Genoa's supremacy among the Mediterranean merchant republics.

Image
The Battle of Chioggia

The late 14th century and most of the 15th century would see Genoa's position gradually become less stable, as its Christian trade partners in the Levant gradually lost power. While commerce continued without falter, the increasingly precarious political position of Genoese trade dominance remains. The end of the 15th century would also witness a discovery that promised to change the course of history: The discovery of the New World. With a native Genoese merchant and explorer - Christopher Columbus - having made the discovery, interest in this new continent was fierce among the merchant families of Genoa. The expansion of Genoese influence from Gibraltar to the important port of Tangiers would give the republic a potential point to expand Genoese into the New World, while the growth Genoese power at Burgas - located in the important region of Thrace, near the Bosporus Straits - provides an opportunity to solidify Genoese power in the Black Sea. Holding dominance over trade in the Mediterranean and faced with untold opportunities in the New World, the Republic of Genoa stands poised to step into a new era of greatness.

OOC: The above is open to change as others fill out their application and write their history

Claim: Image
Extra info (culture, language, etc): Built on the strength of ships and commerce, the Republic Genoa has a strong maritime tradition and a society dominated by plutocrats. With the Republic's security staked on mercenary armies and strategic forts along trade routes, Genoa is known as a stable and reliable employer of soldiers-for-hire, as well as an employer of fortification engineers. While almost entirely Christian, the people of Genoa are generally more open to outsiders and those of different faiths than most, given Genoa's role as a center of trade and exchange.

OOC: As the name, history, and number of claims implies, Genoa would benefit from the Trade Empire bonus

Summary of one Rule: Those late to the RP must conform to the history set by prior RPing.

500 AD
- Roman rebellion on Britain creates a small independent kingdom. This kingdom expands to recover the lost territory of roman Britain. This kingdom would push north and then west, conquering the people of Scotland and Ireland. The conquests would be finished by 520 AD.

The Roman settlers would expand throughout the British isles, and accept Roman refugees from throughout the former empire. They would also trade with other powers, such as the Gauls and Byzantines. This trade would help knowledge to continue spreading, limiting if not stopping the knowledge effects of the dark ages from hitting Europe. As word of hardships came forward regarding rebellions and wars would come, they would assist with those wars. Helping to make the Bulgar rebellions unsuccessful. They established a new Senate in Roman Britain and the king stepped down. The Romans would go on to raise legions of their own and sail east to Scandinavia and conquer the land known today as Norway. From their they would conquer Sweden Denmark and Finland, as well as the Mamursk portion of Scandinavia. In 1000 Ad they would travel west across the ocean to settle on Iceland, and establish colonies in the new world.

Well there is two apps currently. The merchant republic, and the Roman one. I realized that having both the Uk and the Byzantines would be too much space, so I’m now the UK Scandinavia and a Colony, but with the Byzantines still around. Almost all of Europe is still available.

Ok I can just control the modern day Russian Karelia and I don't need to have control over any Finnish lands.

I don’t know how to colour in the map. Nor can I zoom in and see some of the distinct lines. The Uk looked like 20. Sicily 2, Tunisia 1, and Scandinavia maybe 15. The 13 provinces is probably too many though.

This is 50 claims
(23 in UK, 2 in Denmark, and 25 in Scandinavia)
bigger provinces, as stated in the rules, count twice.
there's 1 big province in UK (the Northern most one) and then a bunch of big ones in Scandinavia.
if you want Sicily and Tunsia i can look into that but you'd have to talk to Vahn and any other player who apps (before the IC thread is up) in the area in order to justify your claims via history.
