A break from research, to raise money and satisfy the needs of the proletariat. The RRU had been much too caught up in its drive for space to do so for a while, and the Volksrat had decided it was time for a change. Consumer goods and services were to be the priority for the next period before a return to innovative pushes.

But perhaps they had hit a breakthrough in understanding the tech being propagated by other states and corporations, or their own initiatives. Only time would tell what the RRU would do next.

And indeed in secret the RRU had been researching the technology of others, and found the best suited to their goals would be to adapt the secrets of Datahubs to their own use. To pull themselves from the dust even more and out into the glorious heavens like humans had long dreamed.

It was finally time for the assets to be liquidated...

The last night of the terror saw the worst number of murders throughout Indochina. Almost all the corrupt politicians who had any connections other than the syndicate. Over a hounded were swarmed by mobs, shot in the street, stabbed to death, and more. Them, their families, and their associates met their tragic fate. One last night of terror, made even some of the cronies under their protection safe. Foreign bankers, drug distributors, even some of their own advisers who's loyalty was questioned. There must be no weak links before the greatest expansion of their enterprise came...

The last morning of the terror ended loudly, with over a thousand soldiers march onto the capital building of New Saigon, ripping down flags, smashing symbols, and holding petty bureaucrats at gunpoint. The entire block was stationed and quartered off, while documents inside were stolen and shipped off back to the syndicate's labs for review. From the presidential office, Nam Cham broadcasted himself onto the TV'S, Radios, and Holo-players across the region, even south to parts of the Malaysian region. He sat, wearing robes of Gold, Silver, and Red, made of real silk. He sat in a dark oak chair, with a banner of a rose with three pedal colors- red, white, and yellow, on a black and purple field. He straitened up, looking stoicly into the camera. He slowly smiled, before speaking calmly, and authoritatively.

"It is the times of chaos that order must step in, no matter the cost. For anarchy, anarchy only makes a people devour themselves, with senseless violence and savagery. So was the case of the terror, so was the case of the Republic. It's corruption and murder of the people's will, shall not be tolerated, nay, it was the duty of the people to overthrow, and burn it. This is why we decree, that of this day, the Republic is no more, and the Indochinese Empire shall rise in it's place. There will be change, there will be costs, but in the end we shall go on to greatness, order, stability, and the commonwealth of our people. Victory or death! It is the divine will. All will obey to the new order's commandments, or the rabble will meet their fate as parasites. Thank you, and may you all have luck and fortune under these times of change."

Inadus Labs, Siberia

With the large research being focused on a research that was needed for the very early of their space race. Their need for more processing power came to a staggering realization once the lab was up on Katherine. The idea was what the Blue Sky Conglomerate had and they copied it without stealing it but many knew that the datacenters would be needed in order to help with colonization of other planets and astrological bodies. With the need of advance science and telemetry that is gaining from Katherine to see what can be done in getting Cossacks in space.

The idea was to be rapidly implemented and wish to be built within time as new data was being registered by the immense research network the Clan has built to try and keep the pace with major corps and get themselves ready for the new rush in the Global Space Race.

Major Advancement: Innovate( Datamine Matrices)
Minor Advancement: Operate Labs

The Triad syndicate sends a secure link message to the office of the Conglomerate, kindly asking for a meeting in order to talk about their future economicly, and politically, aswell as to offer a joint venture in business with Blue Sky.

Sundsvaal State University, Sundsvaal, South Africa, Landsraad Hegemony
November 11th, 2120

"...and that is how Messir Jakobs' quantum-locked cryptoservers paved the way for the adoption of our modern system of capital-credits to gain acceptance. Difficult to work with, absolutely, expensive to process, certainly, but the only method of secure commerce between factions and companies in our modern chaotic world that did not rely on the security of dubious institutions."

The projector flickered and moved forward to the final slide, a series of leading questions for consideration. At the front of the classroom the holographic image of the lecturer's head nodded, and spoke again.

"Discuss with your partners the current rise of the Hegemonic guilder and assess its potential impact on our currency markets. The best answer submitted to my server by the end of the day will receive a merit towards their honor requirements."

Isaac turned in his chair, the blue image of the woman next to him likewise looking over and smiling. He smiled back- Emilia remoted in from her outpost in the Prince Edward Land, but she was one of the brightest pupils he had ever had the good fortune to be paired with.

"Blemisson makes a good point, I think, in his most recent article in the Scientific Hegemonic- the relative currency of the guilder within greater Africa and Eurasia is slowly making the need to deal in crypto less pertinent, and that's one of the reasons for the deflated rates on FinEx. Did you hear that Petrotheum future are down 1.2% in trading this morning?"

Emilia's pale blue head shook, but she didn't seem interested in the financial markets particularly. Probably something to do with being a government worker- their relative luxury within the embrace of the State as opposed to most employees meant they could afford to stick to more stable investments.

"I think its something more than that. You haven't seen Lauren in class recently, have you? She got a position as an assistant researcher over in the Hub under the Ortuk, and they've been keeping her hellishly busy. I warrant those people in the know are dumping crypto, and that's why we're seeing such market fluctuations."

The gold-miner's son stroked his short scruff beard and didn't respond immediately. It was a good point- Lauren was a growprogrammer in training, true, but her skill was supposedly very advanced. But what could be making even rich men get jittery about crypto-futures? That had been the silicon standard of blue-chips for decades. Very curious.

"Patch them through."

It was midafternoon, just after lunch, when the Chairman received a secure uplink from Indochina- men he hadn't dealt with recently, Triads in the guise of a megacorp. Curious, certainly, and more than enough to pique Andrei's interest on a lazy afternoon. Hell, he had been about to contemplate a nap before evening meetings got in full swing, but sleep could wait in this case.

The Triad's representative winked into view. So they could afford some solid projector tech at least, that was a good sign. Mekis nodded politely.

"Greetings. I am Chairman Mekis, of the Conglomerate. To what do I owe this pleasure?"

The diplomat sat in a rather modern white leather desk chair, but stood once he was put onto view. He lightly pushed it aside, and stood there, smiling professionally. The room was rather sleek, clean, and modern, probably the most clean of any of their office buildings, the specific reason why their communications department was there. He smoothed out his black suit jacket, a red tie and white rose pin being the only significant accessories.

"My name is Vưu Phi Hùng, and I come to you a representative of imperial highness Nam Cham, and the syndicate as a whole. It is great honor to meet with you sir. You owe this pleasure to our recent expansion of operation, and opportunity for business cooperation. We wish to expand in the near future into the south of Africa, as well as our operations in Asia. Deep under the Cologne arcology, the first of the German datahubs was being built. A masterpiece of computing technology and engineering that would allow German science to excel to new heights. A wondrous thing built off of reverse engineering and ingenuity, but only the first real step into bringing Germany back onto the world stage. Data was already being collated and examined from labs and factories across the Rhine-Ruhr region, and the workers of the region were already finding new ways to push for efficiency with the new data. Computing technology at its finest combined with the brilliance of humanity would be an unstoppable combination.

Andrei nodded, his lips parting in a half smile, the expression of a man remembering a joke.

“Unlawful seizure, indeed. The guillotine under which all men of good capitalist sensibilities make their homes, praying they do not offend the wrong patron or support the wrong politician. Not-“ and here Mekis coughed, a polite punctuation of amusement “-an issue I foresee your organization being troubled by in the immediate future.”

He had seen the news broadcasts of course. Even in this era of strife and anarchy, if you had the right ears and eyes, such momentous events could hardly be ignored. A singularly convenient state of affairs for the Syndicate and their holdings in Indichina. Very convenient indeed.

“But I take the sentiment in which it is offered. I will need to consult with the Board, of course, but such concerns are certainly valid. It is in the interests of legitimate businessmen such as ourselves to maintain working relationships- there are far too many forces in this world already who would make slaves of enterprise and industry, or bind innovation in the silver fetters of the mob.”

As for the other matter. Andrei raised a callused hand, and gestured slightly. His throat worked, non-vocal mike reading an invisible order, and a wall of text briefly flashed into the Triad’s man’s view.

“As for expansion into Hegemony markets, I am certainly amenable to the spread of hard working industrialists and men of far sight. You are aware, I assume, of the terms of the Charter of Commerce, so I will not bore you with the details. Your master, Messir Cham, would of course need to subscribe to such terms if he acquired holdings in our august state. But I doubt that will be a matter of trouble to your organization, being so thoroughly wedded to respecting the law and the principles of order and prosperity.”

The Chairman was hardly unaware of how the Triads had gained their powers. Blue Sky herself had absorbed its own number of shady conglomerates over the years. But as long as they played by the rules in civilized regions, there wasn’t any reason for the Hegemony to concern itself with what they might get up to elsewhere.

"We are very pleased with this, and hope for much gain to come to our houses in the future. We will contact when we wish to open up in South Africa a branch, it's been a pleasure, sir."

The image flickers in and out of existence, before the connection is wholly cut.

...

Back home in Indochina, state repression had gone into full swing. Although all reporters are repressed into not informing the outside world, the syndicate was still a gang. They may be doing some things kinder than the old corporate republic, but they were still criminals. Racketeering was simply institutionalized as a highly efficient tax system. The turf of the three houses and their clients had become feudal rights and demises. The bands of bat-wielding thugs had become semi-uniformed officers. But everything, was essentially the same. But as the days went on a great change in the drug trade facilitated an environment for rapid growth's potential. In fact, the syndicate currently was attempting to fuse these two major ideas together- the new legalization of all drugs sold by the syndicate or her vassals, and the need for state repression. And they were looking for more... creative solutions than simply putting psychoactives in the water supply, however that wasn't such a bad idea whenever they thought about it...

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland under Democratic Confederalism

Western Europe stitched itself back together. Despite the disappointment that the liberation from the warlords, neo-feudalists, and fascists that had occupied everything from France to Spain did not have as great returns as can be expected, the fact was that Great Britain was better than what came before, and what came before was very bad. The broadcasts from radio stations across Great Britain, Ireland, and Western Europe were accurate when they said:

"For the first time in decades, the farmer can take thier harvest to Paris, while the fisherman can take his catch to Marsilles. The Warlords have been crushed when possible, tamed when not, and the towns and cities flourish under the watch of the people's own forces. So send, send your extra produce to the Regional Councils! Feed the Revolution!"

Development Office, Praetoria, South Africa, Landsraad Hegemony
December 14th, 2120

It was near lunchtime when the new legislation came down the pike, and Hans' brows furrowed in annoyance when the ping on his personal computer informed him of the incoming document. Another ream of tax cuts, stimulus packages, and economic incentives to bring new business to the Hegemony, where the glut of manufactured materials and raw minerals was beginning to depress market prices. It had been months since Ragnorov had done any new hiring, or Real Meal had done much other than push out new flavors of burgers, but the higher-ups in the Landsraad obviously thought those entities had potential.

"You coming mac?" intoned one of Hans' coworkers as a gaggle of men and women headed for the elevator. "Bugsies' has a new outlet open on the 23rd sublevel, you don't want to miss out on the opening day discounts."

The German sighed, and shook his head.

"I need to push these documents through ASAP. Pick up a double for me, will you? Cheese, onions, the works."

With a shrug his coworker departed, Susan from accounting smiling and promising she would grab him some food. It was good to know people when these things popped up, but even better if you didn't have to deal with them at all really. If the politicians got their heads screwed on straight, there would be plenty of forewarning about these daft voodoo economic maneuvers.

There was a whisper among the men as they sat in that damp and muggy basement, waiting for their boss to get off the phone with upper management. Just two days ago they had learned of Australia's plans to reassert their authority in Malaysia, a thing not good for the syndicate on all levels of the operation. This meant more cops, raids, and a distinct lack of ability to flaunt their wealth in public. A thing the native-born operatives found even more upsetting. But most importantly they were scared of Sydney's might and potential to crush their little operation, leaving them without a job, or worse.

A few, long minutes later the well-groomed man in black suit and red tie walked down the stairs to deliver the news.

"We got a few hounded men shipped from Thailand for our protection. We are to continue the operations, racketeering and all, while we try and get these anglo folk to get the idea. However, all our bank deposits are being sent to new Saigon, and the drug warehouses are ordered to be emptied until further notice. I want all of you kids to get your underlings to help this out- and be watchful of any anglos or Aboriginies you see walking around- especially if they're a cop or if they important. Got it? Now move your asses."

Back in the north, warehouses full of a great variety of guns were being stockpiled, as suspicious eyes looked to the Cossack invasion of northern china, and predicted their potential want to become the east Asian Hegemony. They were surrounded on all sides by threats, and it was only a matter of time for each. Three 'executives' were sent to Pretoria to survey the area for cheap properties downtown, while a secure comms link was requested with Novo Delhi for the future of their relations.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland under Democratic Confederalism

More taxes in kind are raised, even as Western Europe continues to rebuild. But it was clear that not only was Great Britain falling behind, the Revolution was also stagnating. Aside from continued pacification operations, there was no adventure, and thus no chances for the young men and women of the UK under Demcon to gain experience. The reorganization of the area into networks of towns, cities, and farmer-worker co-operatives was doing well, which explains why the recent tithe was bearable at all. Nevertheless, half of the tithe was sent to the Rhine-Rhur Corporation, as stipulated in the agreement.

Cristopher DeWitt and Sylvia Occalan, meanwhile, had both signed an order authorizing the creation of another Space Probe...

2121: The Winter of Our Discontent

As the New Year passes, a new decade dawning, the bright promise of the Jumpdrive has slowly faded into the disillusionment of every other invention. Men and women who dreamed of going to the stars have seen corporations use this pioneering technology only to grow richer, and their governments squabble over land instead of reaching for the final frontier. Societal contentment wanes, and those who fail to placate the masses may pay dearly for their hubris.

From now on, Powers which let their public opinion ratings fall to a critical level may risk revolts, strikes, and uprisings. This critical level is variable, and unknown...

In other news, an agricultural plague called the Nox Strain is ravaging the crops of the American Southeast in Dixie. All containment efforts have been in vain, and as panicking consumers tighten their belts taxes fall in devastated primary resource producers. Regions with the Nox Strain producers -1 Capital from Taxation, and lose 1 Demand every Month. The Strain is very likely to spread if current containment methods are not improved upon.

Canberra, Australia, Oceanian Union

Ruler Harry Mulroney was now sitting in the Ruler's Office of the Government Palace of Canberra, Australia. Here, he worked as the ruler of the nation, Oceanian Union, overseeing the nation's working and ensuring it wouldn't fall into chaos. Since he grabbed power for himself, he instated himself as a Ruler for Life, ruling with authoritarianism and pragmatism, as he led the nation with a firm and iron fist, but also, policies tailored to the people's current need, like helping the poor found a job. Basically, it was a realpolitik for him. Indeed, there were people complaining of little freedom, but he didn't care, because this was how Oceanian Union could survive in such a harsh world. Again, he didn't act on them, unless if the threat posed by them grow large, to maintain popular support, which required him not repressing them in their current state.

He was seeing the news of the world through a small futuristic glass, while enjoying a pork steak, with a coffee. Then, after watching the news, including the moves that House Rastinov, the Hegemony, GRU, India, and Great Britain made, as well as the formation of a new order in neighboring Indochina, which was said to be ruled by the Triads, he decided to think about his move. He knew he had to replenish his army for another offensive, which was still recovering following the recent takeover of Indonesia and currently only fit for defense. However, he also need a lot of money to develop the nation, including gaining innovation from public education. He then checked the nation's resources, and saw that public opinion of him was high, with his pragmatic recovery programs and the success of Indonesia's invasion.

After some time, he finally made a move. He ordered the lower government members to impose his order on the populace and outsider. First was to raise the government's bond, through various actions, like mandatory crowd funding. Second was to tax the region that the Union held, such as Australia and newly conquered Indonesia. Third was to modify the law for corporations. And then fourth and finally, noticing the movements the Triad made, and how one of their facilities was under Oceania's control, he decided to talk with their leader directly. He ordered the glass to switch into communication mode, before contacting Nam Cham after he found Nam Chad's contact.

Minor Advancement: Raise government bonds: +5 capital
Modify corporate law: Change Donation to have corporations donate three capital and innovation per year, every end of the year (December)
Major Advancement: Taxation: +10 capital, -2 public opinion
Stats: 15 capitals, 8 public opinion, 2 battalions

Tauton Bastion, Orange Free State Governate, Landsraad Hegemony
10th of January, 2121

Beneath the reviewing stand paraded the deep slate-gray uniformed soldiers of the Fifth Armed Front, newly brought back to full fighting strength after the casualties of the occupation of the Suez. Field Marshal Ernst Obereich's conscience hurt slightly at seeing so many fresh faces in the organization that had formerly been filled with staunch and good-hearted men, but that was the price of the order that was being imposed on this chaotic world. One did not become the supreme commander of the forces of a continent without the motivation and hardness of heart that went with the territory.

If those warlords had merely bowed to the Landsraad's demands.

If the Council of Nine had decided on bribery and subversion instead of force.

If the world were a brighter place.

The craggy aged face of the Field Marshall looked out impassively on the endless ranks of massed soldiers and armaments, young men with faces of children saluting from where they stood ramrod straight in each tank. He returned their suit as an automaton, the mind of the military devoid of humanity that he had become.

Somerset Smeltery, Cape Town, Landsraad Hegemony
12th of January, 2121

From the immense cooling towers the streams of liquid metal poured like rivers of shimmering light, radiant-hot iron, nickel, gold, and copper separated in the monolithic edifice of industry into their respective basins. It was like looking at a stream of wealth falling down from some unknown Olympus, nectar and ambrosia given physical form instead of mythological significance. Peter merely gaped at the sight as other workers moved around him, until his shift supervisor gently guided the new trainee towards his workplace, breaking his reverie.

"Awe-inspiring, isn't it? Just wait until they land the next asteroid off False Bay and you see a city's worth of minerals glistening in the sea. This is a place that will give you faith in humanity, and no mistake."

The farmer's son from Namibia could only smile dumbly and nod. They were all like that, at first.

Nam Cham's Hunting Lodge, Veitnam

It took a few hours for the data link to be established. Their communications director, Nam Cham's brother, had a tough time cracking the Australian firewall to the call, having to go through multiple backdoors and even rewrite the code in many places in order to keep the location of it's destination secret. But in due time, a young man in an unbuttoned black suit jacket appeared on the other end of the call, sitting on a black leather couch and crossing his legs, looking strait into the camera. His hair was slicked back, his shirt was without one wrinkle, and even his skin didn't seem to reflect the light of the camera. He seemed almost perfectly put together in order to be causal. His face bore no grin, but rested, looking professionally unphased.

"Good afternoon. What do I have the... pleasure of meeting you for?"

Malaysia, warehouse 5489

More and more arms streamed into the hands of the local syndicate soldiers, growing their presence in the region more and more. The more guns they had, the safer their goods. The safer the goods the more they could keep. The more they can keep the more profit they make. And so, six houndred more armed and angry men, this time from southern China, showed up to enforce their racket in the region. They may be a 'minor corperation', but they would not have their interests sidelined by some Australian dictator.

Second Minor:

Another message of thanks is delivered to the British when the capital from the previous deal arrived, along with a reminder that the next transfer should be adequate for paying back material costs. A quick transmission all said, but full of friendliness to show no hard feelings for the loss of their people. These losses were for a good cause after all.

Back home, another round of fervent research and development, focusing on the heavens and its potential for industry this time. Ratherrn Karl had long held a dream in his heart for his people and humanity as a whole to begin moving the destructive industry and environmental poisons off planet where it would be much easier to dispose of. And this new wave of technological progress funded by German industry and British capital had the potential for another huge breakthrough for Germany and the RRU after the reverse engineering of datamining matrices. The improved computing power of the region was already proving its utility.

It would be only a matter of time until Germany took back its place as the industrial heartland of humanity.

Hall of the Hosts, Landsraad Chambers, White Palace, Praetoria, Landsraad Hegemony
January 18th, 2121

As the waves of applause slowly subsided, the Teuton rose slowly, holding his hands up for quiet. It returned languidly, his fiercely intelligent eyes twinkling with north as the last representatives for the Southhold slumped back to their seats. Into the vast chamber of the Hall his grave tones boomed like artillery, only the slightest hint of amplification in evidence overlapping his deep voice.

“Thank you Master Chairman. Your praise for this august body is merited, but appreciated nonetheless. Councilor Severan’s report from the frontier with Tunis is concerning, but the Hegemony shall never fail to rise to such a challenge!”

Up the senators, representatives, freeholders and patricians came again- it was the concert of democracy to acclaim every inch of good feeling and resent every touch of ill fortune. But the masses desired it, at least the appearance of public franchise. The Speaker’s mask didn’t slip a fraction, for that was what he had intended. The armament bill and this perpetual state of war footing were not egregiously popular. They needed to pass though, and so pass they would, votes aside. The Central Committee and the Council of Nine would see to that, one way or another.

Not that the liberalization of currency controls would hurt. Already economic indicators were positive now that the guilder was easily crypto-locked, and a growing economy meant content masses.
