I see. But that opens the issue of who would hire kids, no matter how accomplished, for such a job, Perhaps the Cult of Virtues could do it?

If we're completely realistic probably no one. Even if they're relatively skilled, they would have close to no experience. But that would mean that you couldn't use them at all, so we have to improvise. Certainly not the Cult of Virtues, they'd have no reason to hire mercenaries in general.

So probably someone who meets them and is pressed by time or lacks the money to hire more expensive adventurers.

Hmm, why don't they meet the Paladins, offer to help, then postpone the question of reward until they suck up to gain the trust of someone sufficiently aristocratic?

Well, it could work, although the paladins would most certainly hesitate to receive help from someone like that.

However, in the long term, there might not be any reward. The three paladins themselves can't give them the money for the reward, and they'd have to do something very significant for the order or for Wyzkia to reward them.

I understand.

Another question: Are either Daniel or Leon Anastazja's 'type'?

How is that related to anything?

But no, I don't think they are, and even if they would be, Anastazja is too nobleborn to marry into a merchant house.

I understand - I was thinking Rafal can introduce Daniel and Leon to Anastazja if the latter two manage to earn his trust in the campaign against the undead.

Don't know. Even if they were to win his trust, Anastazja is after all one of the candidates for the position of Grand Duke/Duchess, so he couldn't really just randomly meet mercenaries. And even if they would, them jumping directly to trying to earn her affection would be inappropriate and would just result in them being kicked out.

But fundamentally Anastazja knows her duty and knows very well that she will most likely have to marry politically.

lol at the idea of rafal trying to marry anastazja off when he was very specifically unhappy about the fact that she was going to have to marry HIM for political reasons. anyway her sister has the marriage part covered :p

"I am all for marrying Anastazja off for political reasons, so long as it isn't to me." - Rafal, probably.

Oh well xD

That certainly wouldn't be him. He of course has no control over who she will marry, so she might still want to marry politically in the future if she has to, to do what's best for the realm, but Rafal would oppose that, since he wants her to be happy.

also even leaving aside all of that... daniel and leon are too young for her... we'll just leave the 'politically and socially advantageous marriage' part to alina and rafal

I thought Anastazja was sixteen like Rafal? Daniel and Leon are sixteen too.

But that's a moot point.

she is not

why'd you wanna know that anyway? kinda seemed to come out of nowhere, since there was the sudden transfer from them getting gold for fighting the undead to asking if either of them was anastazja's type.

Oh, Daniel and Leon's goals are to help their brother and the Army of the Free Soil, and I thought that if they get Anastazja's affection, they might get Wyzkia's help in achieving said goals.

And yes, I know that idea is stupid now.

Not necessarily stupid, as much as cynical and mechanical on one side, because even if many nobles have to marry politically they try to sugercoat it, and a bit dreamlike on the other, because like I said, first of all they're merchant-mercenaries, and secondly, even if one of them would somehow become the love of her life, it wouldn't guarantee that she'd choose helping their unknown adoptive brother and his slave revolt and risk a general war and the death of her citizens for that.

Before anyone says anything, yes, Daniel and Leon screwed their group over again. But to be fair, they'd have to be truly monstrous to let a 9-year old girl go 'splat' onto the ground...

Edit: Yes, Mirielle could have saved herself and Adele, but they don't know that for sure.

@Faal Lot Himdah, would it be okay if a band of slavers tried to snatch the children Faye is telling stories to, and Michael introduced himself to Faye and your Demon Prince by stopping them?

I and Fereni already talked it over, you see.

That is assuming the Az wouldn't do something when they see slavers trying to take a group of children. Which would be a false assumption.
