2052

America has changed a lot, in a lot of ways, since 2018. The year's changed, for one — it's 2051 — and after the insane election of 2020, when Mark Zuckerberg split the vote and handed Donald Trump a landslide reelection victory, the electoral map started to change a lot as well. Over time, the South swung back to the left, thanks to moderate Democrats and increased immigration and shifting racial demographics. The North balanced it out, though, with the highly popular President James Comey doing much of the work in turning white voters back to the Republican Party. The 2050 census also shifted a few electoral votes around. Things are just different now, you know?

Image

A lot of things haven't changed, too. Congress is still there, and it's still dominated by two parties. And neither party really has any kind of unified platform nailed down — different extremists side with different extremes, and different moderates are moderately different. The Middle East is still unstable, with just about all the same problems we had thirty years ago, just in different places. The outgoing President, independent Dick Fischer, has a solid 50/50 approval rating, and has been known to side with Democrats and Republicans both on different subjects. Oh, and Jimmy Carter's still alive. It's just like it was in the old days, really.

But now there's an election year upcoming, and Republicans and Democrats alike, kept out of the White House for eight years, are ready to vie for the highest office. Could it be you?

The Roleplay
This is a character-driven, mechanics-based roleplay, following the primaries and the general election. Character-driven means that I'm asking you to bring well-developed characters to the table who can exist outside of their work and campaign routines. Mechanics-based means that a calculator will determine the final results. It's a basic calculator using the strong transition model derived by the folks at Electoral Calculus, in case you're wondering.

I will regularly post news articles, polls, and other things to make it clear what the current events are, what kind of issues matter to voters, and who is set to win the presidency.

Your Role
You can apply to play any character. Since primaries are qualitative, certain characters will have different advantages based on their roles and what not in earning the nomination, but in the general election it won't matter as much. You can play multiple characters, as well, but only one can run for president. Try to avoid playing characters running for non-presidential office unless absolutely necessary — it makes the calculator harder to manage.

Rules
1. OP Rights. I reserve the right, as OP, to control this roleplay in order to make it better for everyone participating. That includes enforcing these rules.
2. Real Life Characters. Characters can be completely fictional. They don't have to be. However, I will hold real life characters to high standards of mirroring their real-life personalities.
3. Posting Frequency. Post regularly. If you can't, let everyone know.
4. Cheating. Please don't cheat: this means no substantively editing posts after you make them, no godmodding, no metagaming, and no looking things up when your character is in a situation that they wouldn't be able to do the same.
5. Respect. Respect other players, respect the roleplay, and follow NS site rules.
6. History. Everyone has fair game to worldbuild history from 2018 up to 2051 as they please. Just be sure you check what other people have written — I'll keep a record of it in the post below — so that you don't contradict what's already been established.

Application

I did the best I could to predict some stuff that would happen in the future. I sort of thought that a new conservative movement would rise which would be more socially liberal. But just tell me if it is alright.
Gareth Bartholomew Wright - Republican
Image

Account Name: Helowi
Occupation: United States Senator from Minnesota
Political Ideology: Moderate Social Liberalism, Economic Conservatism, Nonpartisanship.

Family: Kids: 5 (Jackson, Andrew, Mary, Emma, & Henry) Spouse: Olivia (Divorced), Danielle (Currently Married)
Background: Born to a rich family in St. Paul, Minnesota. His father was a tech entrepreneur and his mother was a stay at home mom. When he was younger, his father always pushed him to be as succesful as possible and because of this, he developed an excellent work ethic. He also got into politics around this same time and became a big supporter of Republican Social Reforms. He eventually graduated from high school as a valedictorian and went to a business college and graduated as a star student.
After college, he returned to his fathers tech company as a board member. After 4 years at the company, his father passed away and he became CEO. As CEO, he managed to increase innovation at the company and helped the companies stock increase by over 15%. After 5 years as CEO, he retired in order to run for US Senate.
In the beginning of his primary run, he was behind in the polls. But after a series of succesful campaign ads and an impressive debate showing, he won the party nomination. In the general election, he was behind in the polls against the incumbent senator. However, after it was learned about past sexual assault allegations, the race went from a solid democratic win to a tossup. On election night, the race was a close won. And after several recounts, he won by slightly more than 1,000 Votes.
Once he was inaugurated at the age of 33, he supported legislation that was often considered away from party lines. He supported legislation that would expand the outreach of UBI and supported more rights for gay and transgender people. He also supported including more genders in health textbooks, a decision highly criticized by some members of his party. However, economically, he tended to stay Conservative. He argued for more funding for private and charter schools and fought for tax cuts for the middle and lower class.
Faith: Quakerism

Strengths: Very popular with the new conservative movement. Has good name recognition. Can appeal to both sides of the political spectrum.
Weaknesses: Not popular with party conservatives. May be seen to some as a rich idiot. Can sometimes make embarrassing political gaffes.

This nation a funsion between capitalism and social democracy (the only type of socialism made to actually be incorporated into capitalist governments rather than trying to destroy it).

This nation is PMT/FT. Sometimes modern tech.

We sometimes use pokemorphs and digimon in our armed forces. Sometimes

    We are technically centrist.

This nation is a reunited Yugoslavia (and also sometimes controls the UK as well).

Could be interesting... I might play as a candidate of Chinese or Russian descent... Or can we be shady people from a new version of Cambridge Analytica, or a foreign power? How has the rest of the world changed during these years? Korea, for example. Still divided, but North Korea better regognized by the outside world and less totliarian, if I may be a careful optimist, maybe like China today, except withot companies all over the world?

Every character is fair game. As for world history/current events, I've changed the rules so that you guys can write it, as long as it doesn't contradict what anyone else has written. I think this'll give people a lot more flexibility in playing the kinds of characters/stories they'd like to play. So have at whatever Korea you'd like to see!

Thomas "Tom" Gordon John Brae (1996 -) - Democratic
    Image

    Account Name: Tumbra
    Occupation: Govenor of Texas (2038 - )
Political Ideology: American liberalism, fiscal Keynesianism, social liberalism, centrism

Family: Married to: Catherine Brae nee Patrick (since 2023)
    Children: William (2027-), Mary (2031-), Timothy (2034-)
Background: Tom Brae was born in Arizona, but moved to Texas when he was three with his father, Henry, and his mother, Emily. The young Tom was brought up in San Antonio - the place he represented in the House of Representatives. A strong activist against the deportation of illegal immigrants and the attempted DACA act in 2017, Brae joined the Democratic Party that same year. He moved quickly up the grassroots chain while succeeding his father's food distribution company and building it up across the Midwest, eventually spanning most of the flyover states. Brae Foods Inc. is now recognisable in supermarkets throughout Kansas, Oklahoma and so on. He resigned when he entered Congress.

Brae was eventually nominated for the 25th Congressional District - widely considered unwinnable by Democrats - in the 2024 general election as a last-ditch candidate. Originally starting 13% behind in the polls, Brae threw all he could at the polls, painting himself as a generic, no-frills Democrat - the type that campaigned on things like "quality, affordable health care", "college must be affordable", "democracy must be respected", "discrimination cannot be tolerated" and waited for his Republican opponent to slip up, which he did multiple times. His personal affability and good looks also helped with his personal popularity. In the end, he won the seat by around 500 votes from his Republican opponent, and increased that margin to a comfortable one in the 2026 and 2028 elections.

Brae had further aspersions, however, deciding to run for Senator in 2030. He won the nomination by a fair margin - his coup of the 25th district had raised a lot of eyebrows in the state Democratic party - and defeated former Senator Ted Cruz for the seat, which had been held for two terms by retiring Senator Beto O'Rourke, again through use of his charisma rather than actual policy. His statewide campaign allowed him to take some more liberal positions on traditional Democratic positions, however, as he could rely on the urban vote.

His six years in the Senate passed without fanfare or much achievement, and this was capitalised upon by his opponent in 2036, State Senator Rick Thurman who campaigned on bringing actual policy to Texas, without much of the fanfare that Brae brought to the job. Brae was soundly beaten, 57-43.

Out of Congress and out of a job, Brae began gunning for re-election to another congressional district (as he thought he was now anathemic to the residents of the 25th after his two Senate runs) before the state Democratic party decided to draft him for Governor of Texas in the first true tossup race in Texas since the Republican Revolution. Running with Kevin Santos as his Lieutenant Governor, he accepted the nomination and steamrolled a divided Republican party in the general, running on making democracy fairer in the State.

Brae was easily elected and began pushing for a massive anti-gerrymandering proposal and referendum, which he lent personal credence to. While the Republican-led Texas Congress attempted to stymie the proposal, it went on nonetheless. The referendum, which occurred in 2041, was Brae's first major flagship policy proposal that passed. A comprehensive healthcare plan for illegal immigrants was passed in 2041, granting amnesty to them after a statewide Democratic swing that saw Democratic majorities in the House, nearly recapturing the Senate, defeating Thurman after one term, and gaining four seats in the general election. The state became a swing state in the 2044 Presidential election, narrowly going for the Republican candidate, who defeated Fischer by less than 1,800 votes.

Brae ran for a second term in 2042, and was easily re-elected to a second term. He was also re-elected in 2046 for a third term. He, however, decided not to run in the 2048 Democratic primaries, deciding to focus on his state for what he promised would be his second last term in office.

The Republicans put up a strong challenge in the 2048 midterms, retaking the Senate, cutting the House down to a three-seat majority, and holding Brae to within 3 percentage points of re-election in 2050, after which he promised his fourth term would be his last.

    Representative for Texas' 25th Congressional District 2024 - 2030
    Texas Senator (Class 1) 2030 - 2036
    Governor of Texas 2036 - 2052
    Faith: Episcopalian

Strengths: Very popular in his home state, allowing him to win four successive terms as Governor. Rich. Able to appeal to a lot of people.
Weaknesses: Mostly flash, not so much Gordon. A bit too image-conscious.

Will we be going down to a two-party system in this RP?
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.

Welcome! Yes, the two-party system still exists, but third party/independent candidates can still influence the election.

If there are more Democrat candidates than Republican candidates, this character will be Republican. Otherwise, he'll be Libertarian. This is another trend amongst conservatives that I've seen, so I'll do this one now.

Benjamin "Give Us The Nuclear Codes (GUNC)" Egilson - Libertarian Party
      Image

      Account Name: Zjaum
Occupation: House of Representatives, California's 1st District
Political Ideology: Right-Wing Libertarianism, Heavy anti-corruption, pro-nuclear family

Family: Abigail Egilson (wife), Eric Egilson (son), Faith Egilson (daughter), Richard Egilson (son), Irene Egilson (daughter)
Background: Benjamin Egilson had political schizophrenia in his early years, and he bounced around from ideology to ideology. His one constant in his politics was his fear of power, and fear of its abuse. Giving up on both sides' insistence of "any means necessary," he joined the Libertarian Party, hoping to be the one candidate who wasn't a laughing stock. Because party didn't play too much in local politics, he easily won the mayorship of Red Bluff. He set radically large standards for transparency, including live feeds of his campaign and limits on the length of passed legislation. Even with those limitations, he brought a number of Silicon Valley companies up north, making Red Bluff a substantially more attractive place to live. This was when talks about his presidency began to surface. Once his self-set term limit reached its end, he ran for congressman and succeeded with over seventy percent of the vote. At this point it was clear: this man might actually win. He was persuaded to run at the end of his term, and he began his long, arduous, and transparent campaign.
      Faith: Dutch Reformed

Strengths: Passionate speaker, does very good improvisation.
Weaknesses: Has no off button, often known to cuss on television.

      Miscellaneous
      • Egilson has a small computer science background, and his firstborn son is a hacker.
      • Egilson teaches his sons and daughters in a very rigid, logical manner.
      • The nickname comes from a massive Mandela Effect, where people could have sworn that he wanted every aspect of the military to be transparent. A tabloid journal wrote up the story, and everyone just ran with it. He obviously didn't say anything of the sort, but he lived with the nickname nonetheless.
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.

      Andrew Lawrence Hastings - Independent
      Image

      Account Name: Firaxin
Occupation: United States Representative for Ohio
Political Ideology: Populism, Nationalism, Militarism, State Socialism, Statism

      Family: N/A
Background: Andrew was born in the suburbs around Columbus, Ohio to a Middle Class family. His parents both worked office jobs at Nationwide Insurance, with his father's job being unstable. He was generally unhealthy in activities as a child, and this became a lifelong habit. He participated little with other children and became socially introverted. He managed to stay ahead in class for his early years, easily getting high grades with his intelligence. However, he quickly lost interest in school and became more interested in entertainment. As a result, his grades dropped off as he ignored schoolwork more and more. However, his scores on standardized tests remained high. As he engrossed himself in the entertainment industry he began to become aware of the problems with the free market, and quickly joined sides against corporations. This was the birth of his awareness of politics.
He managed to fail multiple subjects in High School, including English and Art, finishing after 5 years of high school. During High School he began shifting away from entertainment and into politics, mainly because of the extent of identity politics and greedy corporations at the time. The government would do very little to remedy the situation and empowered his hate for profit motives and self-victimization. He participated in online communities a lot about these topics, and enjoyed it very much, but he believed he was too socially awkward to get into politics and instead enlisted in the military.
During his 15 years in the military he fixed up all of his health issues and built up social and physical skills. When he finally finished serving, he returned home and decided to become a politician and was elected as a representative in Ohio's House of Representatives. There he would fight for increased taxes, civil rights, and punitive justice. After 2 terms he tried for US Representative and barely won. In Congress he has fought for the military budget, restrictions on private entities, increased federal power, and economic policies on the left.
      Faith: Catholicism

Strengths: Intelligent, appeals to populist movements such as the alt-right
Weaknesses: Commonly accused of being a Neo Nazi, not a lot of money to carry out campaign, libertarians do not like him

        Inoffensive Centrist Democracy

Postby Vienna Eliot » Thu May 03, 2018 11:09 am

While we're at it, here's my own app for the current, outgoing president.

Richard G. "Dick" Fischer - Independent
        Image

        Account Name: Vienna Eliot
Occupation: President of the United States
Political Ideology: "Southern Progressive," descendant of the New Democrats of the 2010s; centrist, and known to swing to both sides on different issues

Family: Rosalyn (wife); Amy (daughter); Billy (brother)
Background: Foreigners and small children, who never understand jokes, may think Dick Fischer looked like a thoughtful, decent sort of President who cared about poor people and nature and peace, and lost thirty pounds in the White House from worrying and working late, and afterwards, instead of playing golf like any sensible President, climbed around on ladders with a mouthful of roofing nails building houses for poor people.
All I can say to them is, you had to be there.
It's hard to explain to foreigners and small children just why Dick Fischer was such a joke. You had to be there. He wasn't a funny joke like W. Bush, more of an embarrassing joke. A quick survey among friends and neighborhood bartenders offers a broad spectrum of reasons.
        a) Cherry farming. This is not a manly occupation, like raising cattle. Never mind that you graduated with distinction from the Naval Academy, when your father dies and leaves a cherry farm for you to manage, you should just say no. Cherries are silly.
        b) His religion. It's a modern political essential to call yourself a devout Christian and speak at length about religious values, but actual Christianity is something else again. He kept muttering about our spiritual malaise. This was insulting as well as embarrassing.
        c) His family. His brother Billy sat around whittling and spitting and brewing up Billy Beer, which was such an instant failure that the remaining cans sold to collectors for incredible sums. His sister was religious or psychic or something and rode a bicycle, and his mother joined the Peace Corps when she was about a million years old and went someplace like Africa. His daughter Mya had a cat instead of a dog. His wife Carter had opinions.
        d) Being Governor of Florida. Florida is not a real place, like New York or California. Florida is funny and gives you an accent.
        e) He talked funny. See above
        f) He was serious about nature. Not in a manly way, like Teddy Roosevelt, to go do many things in, but just to have it lying around.
        g) His sweater. It was a dismal baggy old cardigan and you know perfectly well he had better stuff in his closet. The public has a right to expect a President in attractive garments. It's true that Thomas Jefferson also slopped around in shabby old clothes, but on him it looked distinguishing.
        h) His earnestness. All politicians are expected to care deeply about a few items called issues, chosen for them by the prospective voters, such as crime, or car insurance, and keep caring right through the week after the election, but nobody wants a politician who really cares. It's unbusinesslike. Fischer really cared, and about things like pollution, housing for the poor, and peace in the middle east, wherever that is.
        i) His name. No one ever thought of him as Richard, which is a traditional and dignified Presidential name. He let us think of him as Dick. He encouraged us to think of him as Dick.
        j) His honesty. Maybe people like to call Lincoln Honest Abe, but you never caught Lincoln saying the wrong thing just because it was true. Honesty in politicians is a sign of mental deficiency, as in telling a Playboy interviewer that you've lusted in your heart after women you aren't married to. A President should either not lust, like Nixon, or do something about it, like Kennedy. Lusting in your heart just annoys all of the voters all of the time. American Presidents are supposed to be straightforward, hometown folks, but a President who really is a simple, straightforward, hometown folk is a national humiliation and a dork.
        Faith: Southern Baptist

Strengths and Weaknesses: (quoted from a 2048 presidential debate) "Well you see, back on the plantation they said if it looks like a Republican and talks like a Republican but it's father was a Democrat, there's still hope for it. So yes, Sean, if you look at it upside down and round the corner I guess I ain't too firm in my beliefs, but, and listen to me here, Sean: are you an ant or a grasshopper? … A grasshopper, Sean, write it down! A grasshopper's twenty times as big as an ant! Things can jump thirty feet! Raise a racket with their little banjos! Don't tell me an ant can do that. Flock of hoppers can strip a field bare in thirty seconds. Leave nothing but dirt. Seen it happen. Eat your hat. Chew the hair right off your head. Chirp you to deafness in the process. Ants? Pshaw. I'm a grasshopper, Sean, plain and simple. Now my friends to the right of the Speaker might not like that, but they ought appreciate that I believe what I believe and I don't back down from it."

There are WAY more Independents and third-party members than a realistic election can support.
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.
But seriously, aside from the population and GDP, just assume that my NS stats are roughly accurate.

          Support: Paleo-imperialism, conservatism, libertarianism, Christianity.
Against: Stupid people, resistance to industrial progress, alt-right, any form of government at or beyond socialism.

Yeah. I think it would be nice if some people went under a party first before maybe going independent. But if they don’t want to that’s fine.

I can go under Republican; I don't know if my character's political beliefs would be compatible with modern Democrat trends.

If you feel like doing it, go for it. But if you don’t want to, it’s alright.
