Viktoria Kristjánsdóttir

This was it! Finally I would be able to prove myself in the air, as well as get away from this crowd! The Trekkish girl immediately made a dash for the hanger, her curled grey hair bouncing with each energetic stride she made. My enthusiasm made me want to do the same, however I didn't want to draw attention to myself. Instead, I slowly strolled to the hanger, Lilija at my side.

"It looks like I'm not the only one who wants to get in that plane." I said to her, noticing the excitement on her face.

"Who me? Nah."

"Liar! I can see your grin from space!"

Lilija liked to pretend that anything that had to do with school was automatically lame and unworthy of her enthusiasm. Nevertheless she was doing a horrible job of hiding her emotions and was clearly excited to get in the air.

She landed a playful punch on my arm. "Only nerds like you enjoy flying."

"Oh? And what does that make you?"

"Someone cooler than you," Lilija laughed, mussing my hair and slapping my arm once more.

After several minutes of walking, the bowels of the hanger were finally revealed. T-12 training aircraft were arranged in tidy lines, standing proud against the aerial "threat" above.

Lilija chose the plane closest to us, jumping on its wing and giving a wave. "See ya in the sky, sis!"

I claimed the next aircraft, climbing up to the cockpit and sliding the canopy back. Inside, the flight suit, cap, goggles, and coms lay on the seat. I quickly snatched them, then hopped back to the ground. The flightsuit refused to go on with my shoes, so I had to take them off so that it would fit. Once around my legs, I put them back on and placed my arms in the sleeves and reached for the zipper.

And of course!

The zipper only reached below my chest before it simply would not continue zipping. There didn't even seem to be enough fabric to cover my chest, leaving my white T-shirt exposed. I let out a soft sigh, frustrated that nothing ever seemed to fit me, and looked around to see if anyone noticed. Lilija was to my right, likely discovering the same problem with her flightsuit that I had with mine.

Perhaps that Trekkish girl was right...

There was nothing I could do, and I continued putting on the equipment with my flight suit half zipped. I slid the coms piece into its slot in the cap, then placed them on my head, after which I topped them off with the goggles.

When everything was finally good to go and after a quick inspection of the airframe, I hopped back inside of the cockpit, where I continued my inspection.

With a flip of the switch, the engine roared to life. It was only a 600 horsepower radial, however it still had the ferocity of an enraged lion.

Rudder... Check
Ailerons... Check
Fuel... Check

Lilija's plane started up beside me. She did not even bother hiding the enormous grin on her lips. With a friendly thumbs up gesture, I released the breaks and began slowly crawling towards the runway. After I recieved the all clear symbol, I pushed the throttle and began quickly accelerating down the black tarmac. With a slight pull of the stick, I found myself airborne.

The Earth's gravity no longer constrained me, I was its master. Outside the canopy the flat surface of the airfield slowly grew more distant. Miles of forest lay on one side of my plane, with the infinite expanse of ocean on the other.

A warm static came to life through my coms piece, unmistakably generated through the power of decades old vacuum tubes.

"We got possible tangoes three o'clock high right side, I repeat possible tangoes three o'clock high right side"

A half smirk grew on me. On land I avoided confrontation. In the heavens, I approached it with absolute tenacity.

Airfield

Once the instructor came and the order to sortie and strike the drones down as given, the mechanics wasted no time in moving out. Immediately they moved towards the hangar at nearly light speed, sliding directly under the planes with a tool box as they opened it and quickly got to work on maintenance. Quickly ripping the bottom of the plane up everything was checked, from the hydraulics before the vultures proceeded to rip the cover off the guns and engines in the name of maintenance. "Rudders, check, flaps, check, engines, check and guns loaded with training ammo instead of actual ammo check. Maintenance has been completed and it passes the test!" Octavia shouted, her hair partially stained slightly black while Himiko also gave the clear for Theresa's and Kallen's planes.

"On our cockpit..." Theresa went through the list as she checked her oxygen tank first. "Oxygen tank leaking! Get me a new one!" Dumping it out of the side Kallen instead reported hers as fine as the crew threw over a new tank for her. "Cockpit check, all operating systems are working, nothing's broken down yet and for the guns...let's not test them here." Within 5 minutes, the two planes began to taxi along the airfield as the roar of their engines signified that they've already come to life. Slowly but surely the planes finally took off and had managed to reach a stable altitude at roughly 5500 feet. Looking down, Kallen could see some dots as she used her communication equipment to contact the other planes.

"This is Kallen Isel, target sighted at roughly 11 o clock, below us. Please stay clear of the dive of both planes." Soon, the planes slowly turned downwards towards some of the targets, flaps still opened as she waited for confirmation.

Katlin Orav

My trainer aircraft pulled itself through the air at a steady pace. My eyes were carefully watching the instruments to make sure I wasn't pushing it over the edge. I wanted to have an altitude advantage, but it wouldn't be worthwhile if my plane gave up during the climb. Thankfully, due to my vigilance, this plane had surpassed my initial judgment! It wasn't a piece of crap! A grin grew across my face as I watched the altimeter surpass 6,500 ft and slowly begin it's climb to 7,000ft. While I held the joystick steady with my right hand I locked the throttle in place before reaching for the mission briefing that sat attached to the pilot seat via velcro. I carefully read the mission briefing while simultaneously controlling the plane and reading the instruments. It was not an easy task but thankfully I managed to do both without causing an apocalyptic action.

"Alright, the mission briefing stated the target drones are approximately 3 miles east of Intrepid highschool," I said allowed while I continued to guide the plane, "However, I followed a North East approach. I should see them soon."

We got possible tangoes three o'clock high right side, I repeat possible tangoes three o'clock high right side

WHAT!? What did he say? My mind was in a frenzy as I quickly put back the mission briefing and prepared for the engagement. I quickly put my left hand back on the throttle before rolling the plane at a slight angle to the right then turning west. As I brought the plane around my head and eyes were darting around looking for confirmation. Somehow I managed to spot the black plane shaped figures below me and gave devilish smile.

"This is Katlin. I'm at 7,000ft and beginning an attack run against these drones!" I said, my voice clearly excited. with my announcement finished I rolled the plane over before angling the nose in a dive towards the target drones. As the plane began to pick up speed I pulled the throttle back down to 0% output as to not exceed max speed and tear my wings off. I could feel the G's pushing against my body but I continued the dive anyways without hesitation. The target drones came closer and closer with each second, however, I was ready. My index finger sat still on the joystick trigger until a drone flew came into my reticle. The 3x .30s opened fired instantaneously and peppered the singled out drone. As I passed the group of drones I quickly the increased throttle up to 100% and climbed once again using the momentum from the dive. I peered around my seat and watched as black smoke followed the drone plane down to the ground.

"Scratch one!" I said over the comms as brought my plane back around for another attack run. "Alright, get ready! I'm going back in to scatter them for you."

Once again I went into a dive against the group of drone planes, however, this time I fired rounds off the drones sides to push them into friendly fire. I quickly peeled off and climbed once again. Being able to keep an air advantage would certainly be useful against these drones and other pilots.

Jason leveled his plane from the climbed after hearing Katlin. Jason pulled his stick to the right and began to circle wide as too not bleed his speed to much, raising his hand in his confined space, Jason lowered his combat flaps and extended his raised flaps to Grant him better speed. Watching the plane above twist into a dive Jason put a finger to his comm.

Roger, push them down and well pick them off, plane four keep steady on my four o'clock until we break, over"

Jason said he he watched the plane above intercept the drones. He could hear the distant clacking of the 7.63 machine gun going to work. Seeing two black object streak by and another on bellowing smoke Jason gave the order.

"Break! Break! Break! Good kill, good kill"

Jason shouted as he yanked the stick over and rolled into a dive, chasing a drone. Jasons body was crushed back into his seat as he raced towards the ground. Forcing himself up Jason hunched over and peered into the reticle. He moved his plane into position and lined up the shot.

"I got you now you son of a-"

Jason cut himself off as he squeezed the button on top of the stick, the 7.62s were brought to life and streaks of white raced toward the enemy aircraft. Flashes of sparks danced on the left wing and rudder. The drone instantly pitched up and rolled over into a tight turn. Jason followed and used the speed he got from the dive to turn with the drone. The reticle followed the drone but seemed to stay behind it. Jason tightened his gut to keep the blood in his body from rushing to his brain, looking down he noticed that he had made a mistake. He had forgotten to raise combat flaps Jason, now feeling stupid, raised the flaps and watched as the reticle creeped passed the black object. Squeezing the trigger again Jason watched as the bullets peppered the plane in front.

"OH SHIT!"

Jason screamed as the drones wing tore off and flew towards him. Jamming the stick to the left and breaking from the turn Jason watched as the shredded wing flew by him, inches from his right wing.

"Scratched one, scratched one"

He panted heavily into his comes, his heart thumping hard in his chest, Jason glanced down at his oridance and was stunned to see that his speed had bleed so bad.

"Plane four what your status"

Jason asked

"This is Katlin. I'm at 7,000ft and beginning an attack run against these drones!"

Must be that excited girl who took off first, smart one taking the higher altitude I think to myself. I look to my right and as sure as day there was a trainer aircraft diving on the drones. Holding my breath I watch as the tracers fly through the sky, this is it, this is the life I'll be living for the next few years. Exciting, intense and dangerous, but I will be where I've always wanted to be, in the sky.

"Roger, push them down and we'll pick them off, plane four keep steady on my four o'clock until we break, over."

I am brought back to the present, that was the lead plane communicating with me, best to follow his orders as he may know more than me. I grip the joystick tighter and focus.

"Focus Aya, focus!" I tell myself, pulling my plane closer to him, sticking to his four o'clock.

"Scratch one!"

Her voice comes over the coms again, looking to my right I see that she had successfully shot down a drone, an object falling from the sky leaving a trail of black smoke, it was almost artistic.

"Nice job Katlin!" I yell, forgetting to open my coms to let her hear the praise. Two black objects pass by the plane in front of me, rather close to us.

"Break! Break! Break! Good kill, good kill!" The lead plane had finally given the go ahead for me to dive off and chase one of the drones. After realizing which drone my classmate was after, I roll into a dive to pick up enough energy to catch up to the already diving drone. The G's were like nothing I have experienced in the plane before, although I've never had to do a maneuver quite like that either. It took me by surprise, I had to make constant readjustments to myself as it kept pushing me down into the seat, making it hard to see.

"These planes really can't turn like the Rei back home," I mutter to myself, "Kanadorikans really didn't enjoy turnfights did they Mr. Tosei." Chasing the drone into a turn would've been fine in what I flew back home in with Mr. Tosei, but this is something else.

After losing a significant amount of altitude the drone start to level off, and I followed suit. The drone started to roll back and fourth back and fourth making it extremely difficult to get a good bead on it.

"Scratched one, scratched one! Plane four whats your status."

The lead plane's voice comes into coms again. Can't focus on that though, this drone is slippery. Suddenly the drone started to take wider turns, enough so that for a brief period of time he was in perfect alignment with my crosshair. I didn't pass this chance up as I squeezed the trigger and tracers from the three .30s lit up. Sparks flew as the planes fuselage was hit by a string of bullets, black smoke and oil started to pull out as the drone went into a steep dive towards the ocean. I catch my breath while putting my plane into a climb. That was intense and exciting, but also very scary. Those .30s still ring in my head, thinking that could be a real person makes my head spin, but I know that it's a drone and we won't be using real bullets in exercises with my classmates and that soothes me.

"This is plane four, scratched one, I repeat: This is plane one, scratch one, forming up with you again plane six" I respond, looking around for him. Catching my breath and collecting my thoughts.

Jason was worried he didn't get a response from plane six. He gained speed and went into a shallow climb, looking over his shoulder, he peered to try and get a visual on plane six. There, down below, he saw plane six chasing down a drone. Jason smiled as he watched the plane trail the object. Jason knew what the pilot was doing she was taking it easy and was waiting for a good shot. That time did come as Jason saw the flashes erupt from the Texans wings and nose. Pulling his stick to the left he swung his plane around and flew above the plane.

"Plane six, good kill good kill, form up on me and let's regroup with the main force, over"

He said through comms, looking around, Jason scouted for anymore enemy aircraft. And when he was sure there wasn't ant in the area he swung his plane around to headed back to the main force.

"Everyone do a quick scan of the area make sure here are no more tangoes in the vicinity, plane six, thanks for being my wingman"

He said thanking the pilot.

"O-hiya!"

Viktoria was flying starboard to my own plane, about several dozen yards away. I gave her a friendly wave, which she noticed and returned enthusiastically. We were both slowly gaining altitude, our noses aimed towards the heavens with the dutiful purpose of destruction.

She was right. I was enjoying flying this airplane, and the fact that I was annoyed me. Her smug smile - she knew that she was correct and that I was wrong. Of course I knew for a fact that she was loving her time in the air. Viktoria was an entirely different person when flying. While on the ground she was shy, once airborne she would become confident and competitive.

If only I could cure my demons that easily...

I shook my head, chastising myself for allowing my thoughts to turn dark. Now was not the time.

We reached an altitude of 6500 feet and leveled off. I scanned the airspace below me to confirm a visual with a target drone at my one o'clock.

Tho radio creaked to life, and a voice all too familiar came out.

"Viktoria here! He's mine."

I couldn't help but feel delighted with my sister's cheery attitude. I was the only person here who understood the true Viktoria, the one completely obscured by her timidity in public.  Hopefully the others here took notice and realised she was actually a pretty sweet and caring girl.

"Heh, you'll have to beat me to it!" I replied, only to discover that she was no longer next to me.

That thot! She left without me!

Sure enough, Viktoria's plane was visible below, rapidly gaining on a target drone. In a quick flash, tracer ammunition errupted from her aircraft, flashing a bright green. The drone was shredded and emmited a cloud of choking black smoke before falling back to the earth in flames.

"Told you he was mine!" Viktoria bragged over the radio. I was unsure if she realised that the others could hear her voice, or if she thought that the radio traffic was restricted between the two of us. Either way, I was damn proud of my older sister.

Kallen & Theresa Isel

"Targets sighted, currently at 6,000 feet." Checking the meter, Kallen and Theresa both placed their oxygen masks on, preparing to turn it on at any moment as they soon climbed to a somewhat safe 6,500 feet. From above, they could only see small specks of color and bursts of light as their planes slowly turned downwards, cutting throttle for a moment as the blades stopped spinning, diving directly downwards towards the target. The meter on the cockpit went completely wild, spinning madly as her descent was cut by 100 feet almost every second.

"One burst..." Theresa muttered to herself, carefully stabalizing her plane as she looked over at Kallen.

"One shot..." Kallen said, checking the meter as she likewise turned her mask on.

Within seconds, a trail of orange and red fire began to trail down from the sky, striking down 2 trainers not hard enough to blast them into pieces, but to at least cause them to crash down towards the ground as the planes quickly turned around once again, barely grazing each other as they cruised towards their next target.

Nikolas Anthis

My face turned bright red as the girl (whose name I think I’d heard was Viktoria) backed away without making a sound, face still turned to the ground. I let out an audible sigh as the few shreds of confidence that were left in my chest fell into the pit of my stomach.

“You're not going to get my sister to talk on the first day, but you can talk to me anytime!" Lilija called to me with a wink, practically escorting her sister away from me. I chuckled and gave an appreciative nod to Lilja, laughing at my own expense and realizing with horror and amusement how I must look to anyone who was watching.

"Listen closely!"---"I am Paaluk Akkaatsiaq, and welcome to Intrepid. I will make this brief. There are twelve drones flying overhead right now, just offshore from here. You will all be flying trainer aircraft and be intercepting those drones. I don't care if you are new or a returning student and have your own aircraft. You will all be flying those trainers so I can see how well you handle those birds. Understood?"

I’d just gotten ahold of myself and was staring into space when the gravelly voice of one of the instructors caught me by surprise. I looked up at the man in shock, choking and gagging with almost every word he said. It was an aptitude test, in the first ten minutes. A wave of panic swelled over me as Johaan started directing the students over to the hangars, where a row of aircraft waited.

This was deliberately throwing us in the deep end. An aptitude test. They wanted to see who was unworthy of their teaching and I still felt almost untrained. I was at their mercy if I failed, they'd just throw me on the cheapest boat out of the country and be done with it. One of my legs just seemed to give out at the suggestion and I found myself left limping, dragging it pitifully along behind me as I watched my classmates rush gleefully over to the planes.

Most of the planes had already been claimed by the time I reached the hangar and dropped my bag at the entrance. None of the remaining handful seemed terribly well looked after, one was missing any paint and the another was so dented that it almost looked as though the aircraft’s frame had shriveled up like a sultana after being left out in the sun too long.

I hauled myself up onto the wing of the half-melted plane, punching my numb leg through gritted teeth until it finally decided to move on its own again. I coughed up a relieved laugh and a loud “oh thank God” as I realized that the machine was, on closer inspection, a similar T-12 model to the ones I’d been trained on in Selviand. The canopy release was stiff and difficult to open, which made the cockpit feel strangely comforting, almost like a kindly little babushka's home as I slid into it and replaced my cardigan with the flight suit I found inside.

“Alright,” I muttered to myself with my head in my hands “sit up straight, shoulders back and don’t embarrass yourself. No going home now.”

I looked around for the ignition switch, trying to remember where it had been back in Selviand, since all the instructions and warnings seemed to be written in Kanadorikan. Guessing at random I flicked one of the switches and the engine spluttered, throwing smoke up into my face before the dull groan of the beast started to tug the little craft onto the runway.

You forgot the bloody pre-flight checks.

A tiny voice appeared in my head and I winced and looked helplessly down at the tarmac, which was moving in a blur away from the plane. Supposed I’d have to find out later if the bird is actually flyable.

The wheels slowly started to tear themselves away from the earth and my breath quickly disappeared again as I edged the control column towards me. Suddenly there was nothing keeping me steady, nothing stopping the chaos from seeping in and throwing me into a spin. I tensed and tried to ignore such distractions as I climbed slowly into the clouds to join the class.

Jason joined with the group and flew in formation. He relaxed and let the hum of the engine and vibration of the cockpit sooth him. He looked down at his cross and smiled remembering when his father gave it to him. His dreams had come true at last he was in a plane that was in the sky that was above a school. Joy filled him and he screamed with joy, raising his hands in the air, he did a tiny dance in his seat. He giggled when he was done and resumed his prior action.

"I'm finally here dad, I did it"

He whispered to himself unaware that comms were still on he wiped a tear from his eye and put his hand back on the stick. He looked over and began to do a check of his surroundings.

Johann von Braun

Johann watched as the students scrambled to put on their equipment and jump into their fighters, while making a mental note of the students who didn't take his advice and took off without a walkaround or pre-flight check; they were at the greatest risk of an aircraft malfunction, so he'd need to keep the closest eye on them. While waiting for everyone to get ready, he also observed the students' headings as they took off towards the targets. Katlin seemed to be the more tactically minded of the new students in that she climbed to a high altitude in order to give her an advantage over the drones, but in her overeagerness she flew off without a wingman; a potentially fatal mistake in any scenario where the enemy could fire back. The other new students were patient enough to wait to approach the target until they had a wingman, but they flew in at a low altitude, putting them at an immediate disadvantage. Only Kallen and Theresa manged to pull off the trifecta of a thorough pre-flight check, departing with a wingman, and approaching from a tactically advantageous position, but given that they were returning students, that level of expertise was expected.

Nikolas was the last of the students to ready up, as the more heavily used craft he ended up with appeared to be giving him some trouble. Johann started making his way over to the plane to see if he could lend a hand, but when he could see that Nikolas was able to manage, the Brusian returned to his trainer and taxied it onto the runway a short ways behind the new student, taking off not long after Nikolas was airborne. Since there were no other new students nearby, Johann contacted him over the comms stating: "This is Johann to Nikolas: it looks like you're in need of a wingman. I can fly in with you if you'd like, but since this is an evaluation of the new students' abilities, you'll have to take the lead."

Katlin Orav

I continued to maintain my air advantage over the drones. It had proved successful for the most part, however, I had no wingman if things went south. That being said I didn't really fear the target drones. They weren't aggressive and the mission briefing was accurate. I doubt they would lie to us on a first mission. After all, what's the point of seeing what we're made of if they're just going to shoot us down. That would certainly be backwards thinking! They would just be downright unhonorable! As my mind continued to think of how the school wouldn't screw I could hear the rapid popping of machine gun fire down below. It seemed the other various students had started taking action against the drones after I had disrupted the drone formation. That was good. It certainly meant that these pilots knew when to start engaging against a disorganized enemy. A grin once again grew on my face as the thought of the possibilities that could be accomplished with these students.

"This is Katlin! I'm coming in to break them up again!" I announced as I put my breathing mask on before putting the plane into a dive. The plane began to vibrate furiously as it descended, however, I held onto the joystick tightly as I pushed the plane onwards. The Gs once again pushed me back into the seat but I managed to stay on target. I quickly flicked off the safety switch and put my finger on the trigger. I adjusted slightly then opened fired at the drone formation only peppering the wing of a single drone. Instead of using the momentum to climb again I turned away from the formation and took formation next the Lilija and Viktoria.

"Let's mop these drones up!" I said enthusiastically, as I prepped myself for the continuing fight I commented on one of the pilot's whispers on comms, "You're hot miking! Stop hitting the switch!"

Evelin was actually one of the last ones to get out into the air. Not due to being slow to go through her pre-flight checklist (if anything, she had rushed it a bit), no. Quite the contrary. What slowed her down was absolute shock.

A training aircraft? And by the looks of things, one from the interwar period? Preposterous.

Sure, she'd do it, but she didn't have to like it. It was patently ridiculous anyway - every nation tended towards a different trainer aircraft, and few used actual 1940s relics, let alone 1930s - Evelin herself had trained in a 1972 Jaakola Swiftsure.

Still, it would not stop her. By the time Nikolas was rolling, she was in the air and enroute to the training zone.

A few tweaks of radio channels later and she had found the correct one on the foreign language radio dial.

<<This is Evelin. Firing.>>

Cool as an iceberg. One burst, lead the target, no longer than absolutely necessary. Shot to the nose, shot to the fuselage, shot to the tail became shot to the wing as the drone tried in earnest to turn away but was limited by a damaged computer and simplistic AI.

Reforming with the six plane I am able to collect my thoughts finally, as we go into a shallow climb I look to the side and see chaos ensue. It didn't look pretty, we were all over the place, as expected of rookie students. I notice that two planes were also entering the arena, must be the final two planes which means the most seasoned student was in that duo.

"Plane four thank you for being my wingman," the voice of the pilot in place six crackles over the coms. My face turns beet red, I'm not used to getting compliments, and by a boy even! Growing up in an all female orphanage I never really got to communicate with any guys other than Mr. Tosei and that's because he works with our home. The only time I got to play with any other guys was when our sister orphanage would have a trip to visit us.

"Focus Aya, you gotta stop losing focus!" I remind myself, giving myself a quick smack on the face. "My pleasure, plane six," I reply.

Looking back at the chaos it seemed like everyone had split up divided up into either groups of two or one. Katlin was still pestering the drones that didn't straight dive, pushing them into the crosshairs of the other students, which works for this exercise but maybe not other, more aggressive exercise.

"Three... Four... Five... oh seems like a student is working on the sixth, so only six more drones" I count to myself.

"Let's mop these drones up!" Katlin's voice comes over the radio. I nod to myself in agreement as Katlin screams at someone, "You're hot miking! Stop holding the button"

"Plane six, I think we should from up with Johaan, he seems like he knew the most about flying besides the other returning students. We could probably make quicker work of these drones with his guidance." I communicate with my lead plane.

Jason checked around himself smoke and the constant sound of gunfire filled the air around him. His heart raced as planes turned and dived after drones in his vicinity. He looked down at his fuel and water indicators and found them to be a little heated. Hearing a voice sound in his headset he listened. It was his wingman she wanted to join up with another plane. Reaching to his comms he replied.

"Plane four this is plane six, I read you loud and clear let's join up, you can take lead, over"

He said over comms, gripping the stick, he banked left and slowed down. Allowing plane four to take point. As he passed her cockpit Jason flashed a thumbs up at her. It was her move now she was in control Jason moved his stick and followed plane four as she made her way over to johaan.

"Plane four this plane six, it's your call, want me to attack or defend?"

Jason said into the radio he might have sounded cool over the comms but inside he was screaming with joy. He didn't sound like a noob he actually sounded like a veteran. Using words like break or over in a transmission excited him.

Johann von Braun

While waiting for Nikolas to respond, Johann heard Ayako and Jason's plan to form up with them and felt a little guilty that he couldn't take the lead in the new students' evaluation, but figured that didn't necessarily mean he couldn't help at all. Still flying to the left of Nikolas, leaving the new student in the formation's lead position as Ayako joined up as the element leader on Nikolas' right, with Jason serving as the element wingman, Johann stated: "Well I can't fly lead, but I guess there's no rule against giving hints..." it wouldn't be long before that call was to be made either, as Johann soon noticed the last of the drones were making a run for it. "I've got five bogeys at 12 o'clock" the Brusian informed the others "Looks like they're trying to bug out, but we're not going to let them get away that easily."

The drones were in a simple battle spread formation, lined up side-by-side with only a short distance between each fighter; Johann figured the simplicity of the formation likely meant the instructors were ready for the exercise to move towards its end and for the students to return back to base. Figuring he'd best help to move things along as well, he informed the others in his formation: "Alright, let's wrap this up now, shall we? I think we can afford to be a little more aggressive than usual here, so Jason, why don't you take out the plane on the far right of their formation, Ayako you can take the center right plane, Nikolas, since you're flying lead, you can take the lead drone, and I'll go for the two planes on the left of the formation." As they began to near their prey, Johann watched closely for the best time to strike, and as they approached he stated: "Ready..." and when the best window of attack opened he ordered: "Now!" and dove towards the center-left plane, firing a burst that lit up its engine and canopy as soon as it entered into his gunsight.

The drone on the far left of the formation then banked hard to the left, and trusting the rest of his formation could handle their targets, Johann made ready to go after it; hitting left rudder, pulling up on his stick, and rolling his plane to bleed off his excess speed from the dive, thus performing a lag displacement turn to prevent overshooting his target. The maneuver worked as intended, keeping him on the drone's six, where it only took a little extra maneuvering to get the clearly simply programmed drone in his sights, and a short burst of fire soon sent it plummeting into the sea. Johann leveled off and informed the others "Splash two drones" as he made his way back towards the rest of his formation and waited to hear how they had fared against their targets...

Upon hearing the order Jason keeled his plane over and gave chase. Once on the drones six Jason lined up his sights and squeezed the button. The guns came to life and punched quarter sized holes in the tail, left wing, and fuselage of the drone. But as aspected the drone yawed up and twisted over to escape it's pursuer. And like a lion stalking a wounded animal Jason waited for the perfect shot.

"Come on almost there"

Jason said out loud he turned and dived and rolled after this plane only scoring a few more hits on the enemy aircraft. The drone, now shaking violently, did something that all pilots fear. The drone sparked once and exploded Jason screamed, forgetting comms were on, and did his best to evade the debris. Jason heard glass shatter and a loud twisting clunk on the side of his wing. Opening his eyes Jason looked around then down at his pissed pants. It wasn't long before he came to realize how bad the accident was.

"I'm hit, I repeat I'm hit"

He screamed into the comms, looking around, Jason's view was filled with flashing light and a strong breeze from the fist sized whole in his windshield

Watching Johaan was like watching an artist at work, he was able to make quick work of two drones.

"So that's what we can achieve as a returning student," I mutter to myself in awe, watching him in admiration.

"I'm hit, I repeat I'm hit"

My heart stops as something you don't want to hear comes clearly over the coms, a student's plane has been damaged and a student possibly is injured. It was my wingman that I had worked with throughout the exercise, and as his wingman its my duty to make sure he gets back safe.

"Plane six, I'm going to pull up in front of you and guide you back to the school, just remain calm and do as I say and we'll make this easy." I try to soothe the pilot while simultaneously trying to keep myself calm, this isn't something I was planning on day one.

I switch positions with him, taking the lead for once. Going into a gentle turn we start to make our way back to the school. That last drone's debris really did something in on his plane, he was trailing oil, he had a massive tear in his wing, and a giant hole in his cockpit. It's no wonder why he was freaking out, any pilot would freak out about this from the greenest of new pilots most grizzled veterans to the most grizzled veterans this isn't something one can really prepare for, I'm surprised the wing didn't rip off.

"Come on plane six we can make it, take your time and don't stall" I say again reassuring him, "We can leave the rest of the drones to the other students, we had our fun."

Nikolas Anthis

“This is Johann to Nikolas: it looks like you're in need of a wingman. I can fly in with you if you'd like, but since this is an evaluation of the new students' abilities, you'll have to take the lead."

It was nicer than I was willing to admit to hear Johaan’s calm, collected voice in my earpiece when all the rest of what I could hear was only enthusiastic yelling from the rest of the class.

“R-r-roger Johaan, g-glad to have you. Sure h-h-hope you can k-keep up with me.” I said with a knowing chuckle and friendly wave as his aircraft came up alongside me. Two other aircraft joined us as we levelled out at about 6000 ft and a row of drones loomed up to fill my gunsight.

"Alright, let's wrap this up now, shall we? I think we can afford to be a little more aggressive than usual here, so Jason, why don't you take out the plane on the far right of their formation, Ayako you can take the center right plane, Nikolas, since you're flying lead, you can take the lead drone, and I'll go for the two planes on the left of the formation."

I looked to my left and right as Johaan spoke and realized to my shock that I was flying lead just as he said. My nerves started to stiffen and my hands felt like they were fusing with sweat to the control column.

“Snap out of it Nikolas!” I whispered harshly to myself, “you’re doing fine. Don’t think about it and you’ll be in the clear in no time.”

“Roger Johaan. I’ll try my best not to go for a swim.” I responded, switching the mic on and shutting my eyes in a quick prayer that the rudder wouldn’t fail me and that I wouldn’t fail myself.

A few seconds passed before Johaan yelled “Now!” and the planes on either side of me seemed to disappear as my focus completely shifted onto the lone drone in front of me. I pressed down hard on the trigger, letting my imagination picture everything holding me back right inside its small steel shell. A few streams of tracer fire spilled over the plane before it rolled onto its back and started to lose altitude.

I dropped with the drone to make sure to confirm the kill. I looked up from my cockpit to where Johaan had downed two drones in only a few seconds and couldn’t help shaking my head at his handiwork, watching while the burning husks of his foes spiralled towards the ground.

“I’m hit, I repeat I’m hit!”

I spun around at the words, just in time to see one of the other planes be smashed by a brick sized piece of flaming debris. It was too far away for me to do anything and I could hear one of the other pilots calming their screaming colleague, so I tried to stay calm and block the yelling from my head.

My drone suddenly appeared right in front of me before it rolled over and pulled into another high-G dive. Without another thought I rolled with it to make sure it wouldn’t escape, I couldn’t let it get away, I couldn’t let the school decide to not bother with me.

The little T-12 squealed in protest as the dive got steeper and steeper before I righted myself at only about 200 ft. The drone was still ahead of me, brushing the tops of the trees near the airfield and rocking its wings to mock me. Adrenaline pushed itself through my blood and my instincts forced me to open the throttle just a little to follow the drone as it dropped lower and lower over the forest.

Make this worth it Nikolas.

I fired a burst into the drone but it banked away just at the right time. A tree loomed in front quicker than I could react. I threw my entire body weight onto the rudder pedals and winced as the plane yawed just far enough away from the trunk

“C’mon you prick, stay in the zone.” I sneered at myself as I brought my guns round to bear on the drone. My finger danced nervously all over the stick before he slid into the gunsight. All my built up frustration and terror ran right into my hand and I emptied almost every round I had into the little machine and it tore itself apart in mid-air before the charred remains slammed loudly into a nearby tree.

I let out a long shaky sigh as I pulled away from the tree line.

“S-s-splash one drone.”

Jason looked around in a panicked freenzy. All the books he read couldn't and didn't prepare him for this. His eyes darted to the water and then the oil meters both if the lights above were flashing red. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't slow his pounding heart, his breath, came to fast and he could feel the darkness of fear surrounding him. Through his haze of fear he glanced out of his cockpit and looked at the damage. This only made his state worse as he saw a large hole were metal should have been. He yelped in surprise and faced forward, grabbing the stick, Jason didn't dare move.

"This is it, this is how I die"

He said, tears, leaking from his eyes. His head shot up when he heard a voice spring from the comms. He saw a plane roll over the top of his plane and level out in front of him. He shook his head and wiped his eyes. He gripped the stick and with his new found resolve worked his plane over and headed back to base. His plane shook and shuddered as the precious oil was drained from it fuselage. He fought for control nearly stalling three times he eyed his alt meter like a hawk watching it ever so slowly drop by five feet. What scared him more was the pressure in the stick it was growing lazy. Not only this but the shudders and jumps that the plane made seemed to worsen.

"Plane four how long till RTB"

Jason said panicked he knew the plane was going to last much longer. As a matter of fact he was quite surprised that it even obeyed him this long.

Johann von Braun

Just as things seemed to be going so well, Johann heard Jason shout that he'd been hit. He looked around and soon noticed the wounded bird, then maneuvered behind the craft to get a look at the extent of the damage. It was bad, but fortunately not devastating; the main concern was the fuel leaking from the damaged wing, but so long as it didn't ignite, there should be enough fuel in the other tank to get him back to the airfield. Ayako was kind enough to volunteer to lead Jason back to the base, while also trying to calm him down, which would hopefully help the inexperienced pilot from panicking. As Ayako spoke to Jason, Johann switched his radio over to an emergency frequency to contact the airfield and inform them: "Mayday, mayday, mayday; we have a damaged aircraft that's going to need to make an emergency landing. Recommend clearing the runways and deploying A-R-F-F; the aircraft has a fuel leak, so it might be a good idea to alert water rescue as well in the event the wing catches fire and the pilot needs to bail."

Switching back to the regular frequency, he heard Nikolas state that he'd downed a drone and replied: "Excellent work; I'm going to follow Jason back to base to keep an eye on his plane, but you and the others are welcome to go after the last drone if you want." When he then overheard Jason state that this was how he died, Johann replied: "You're not going to die Jason, your wingman and I are going to see to it that that doesn't happen. Just keep your wits about you and listen to our instructions, and we'll have you safely back on the ground in no time."

Viktoria Kristjánsdóttir

Landing wasn't too terribly difficult. The plane itself was easy to handle and was not unstable at low speeds. Lilija didn't seem to have much of a problem landing her plane either, as she pulled into the hanger with a fantastic grin. I myself was just getting out of the cockpit, sliding the canopy back and hopping onto the wing.

"How was it?" I playfully asked my sister, who too was just getting out.

"It was alright I suppose. Would have been better if I had gotten a kill."

"Heh... The expression on your face says otherwise."

Lilija frowned for a moment, knowing her guise  was completely transparent, then grinned once more.  "Eh so what now?"

A piece of paper on the wall caught my attention. On it were our names and what looked like were dorm numbers.

Females:
Viktoria, Lilija: Building A, Floor 4, Room 4-1

Katlin, Ayako: Building A, Floor 4, Room 4-2

Kallen, Evelin: Building A, Floor 4, Room 4-3

Israe, Aayden: Building A, Floor 4, Room 4-4

Boys:
Nikolas, Johann: Building B, Floor 3, Room 3-1

Jason, Eric: Building B, Floor 3, Room 3-2

Lilija giggled upon seeing her name. "Ah shit that means I have to share a room with you? You leave your bras all over the floor."

A blush grew on me.  "I do not! You're the one who is messy!"

"I prefer organised chaos."

I continued reading the paper.

Be prepared to start class in two days!

Lilija gave a quick note as she read the note too and turned back to me.  "Well, let's go get our stuff out of the car and head to our new room. Maybe our neighbors will be there."

After bringing the plane into landing, noticing the two Kanadorikan sisters had already landed and disembarked I made sure that plane six's pilot was able to bring it to landing, looking onto the airfield the plane was surrounded with emergency crews and faculty.

"I hope he's okay" I mutter to myself, trying not to think of it too much. That could've very well have been me and not him thinking back on it, maybe I'll visit him later.

Noticing the two sisters looking up at something on the wall, a new piece of paper? Right where we landed? Must be something important. As they left yelling at each other I approach the wall to figure out what exactly they were looking at. Getting closer I saw in bigger font "Females" and lower on the list "Males".

"Let's see here, what's all of this," I mutter as I get close enough to read, it looks like a list of names, dorms and rooms. A lot of the names look like a mess to me, because I still haven't got used to reading Kanadorikan full-time yet. Looking up and down the page I'm only able to comprehend completely a few words, one is my name "Ay-aa-koo", the alphabet is still weird to me as I mumble to myself. Attempting to pronounce the word next to mine, "Ka... Ka-t... Lin? Kat...lin... Katlin!", it could only mean that I'm supposed to talk to her for some reason. I can't really make out what the rest of this means. I should probably just wait for her to clear everything up for me.

In the meantime I should pick up my belongings from where I left them. I walk over to the hangar and collect my two bags, one filled with clothes and one filled with the books Mr. Tosei told me to bring. These books were anything from leisure books to books for studying, particularly of the Kanadorikan language and airplanes. Walking back to the board I look towards the skies, I was finally able to do what I always wanted to do, fly a plane with friends in the sky! It was a different feeling than I expected, probably because of the fact that it was combat, something most children my age won't ever see first hand.

"Ah, more planes are coming in, I'm sure Katlin will be here in no time," I murmur to myself, "better brush up on my Kanadorikan."

As I take out the book, I begin to match the letters with the sounds, and words with their meanings, waiting for Katlin to arrive so that she can help me understand this all. A feeling of anxiety starts to build in my heart.

Jason shook his head and rid himself if horrid thoughts. His plane wobbled and the engine was starting to choke from the starvation of fuel. The good news was that the airfeild was just up ahead Jason looked about and found, and pulled, the lever for landing flaps. The plane slowed and began to tilt, gripping the stick, he straightened the plane out. Jason watched as the landing strip ahead crept closer and closer.

"This is Jason, I'm coming in for a landing, over"

He spoke through comms. He pushed and held a lever down and a whirring could be heard as the wheels extended down. Jason lowered his stick and glided down towards the airfeild. His luck had stayed with him during his ordeal, his engine, seized and stopped as he touched down. Jason instantly jammed both his feet into the pedals below that
Controlled the brakes. Once at a stop jason had the time to calm down, feeling a sharp pain, his hand flew to his shoulder and he was surprised to find a large shard of glass embedded thier.

"Thank God for adrenaline"

He said to himself as he pulled of his mask and leather helmet. Although he was filled with adrenaline he could feel the pain grow stronger. He gritted his teeth and nearly punched the face of a man that grabbed at him. In his haze of shock and confusion Jason hadnt noticed that the ground crew had climbed on his plane and we're trying to help him. Relaxing some jason, along with help, managed to climb down the wing and onto the ground. As he was put on the back of a vehicle and carried off to the infermory Jason had realized that he had in fact pissed himself.

" Hmph well at least the back ofy pants ain't filled."

He chuckled as he was carried off

Kallen & Theresa Isel

The rest of the practice went generally uneventful for the sisters, save for the fact that someone's plane had run out of fuel. After the exercise eventually ended, both planes turned around as they radioed ground control. "This is Kallen Isel, both planes are returning home." As they closed in onto the runway, they could see that some planes had arrived earlier than them and that now 4 planes had already touched down. They were clearly late to the party. As the planes touched down, they both jumped out, Kallen needing Theresa to lift her down from the wing as she dusted her dress slightly.

Walking over to one of the notices that she saw on the wall, she merely scrolled past other names before seeing that Theresa and her were not in the same room. As per usual, after what happened in March there was clearly a need to separate them. She sighed as she turned around, before walking back to her new dorm assignment. She had already got the ground crew to move her little amount of boxes in when the assignments came out so most of her items should be there. Otherwise Theresa would just barge in and probably throw a pair of panties or something in her face.

On the airfield ground crew, including the maintenance crew of the bomber got to work as they began to perform maintenance, although upon arrival they quickly checked Jason's plane to ensure that there was no fault. The damage was quite severe, wing damage and damage to the cockpit's glass, it couldn't get up in the sky until it was all fixed. But, they knew it was just an incident. Wheeling it off, they directed some ground crew to bring it away as Himeko followed it to perform the final round of maintenance on it. Octavia had opted to stay and fix returning planes for any potential damage in case the next batch immediately wanted them to be in use.
