The gods Next Door [Fantasy | OOC]

It has been over 2000 years since the halls of Asgard were filled with the Æsir, or Mount Olympus with the Olympians, or any of the abodes of the pagans. We have fallen, stripped of our powers to the point of fearing mortality. But we, the pagan gods of old, are not dead yet. The Slayer has driven us from our ancestral homes, but we have found new ones. Through the ages, my kind has been forced to become creative; finding jobs to earn wages to stave off the troublesome hunger, homes to shield our heads from the driving rain, and new lives to hide from our hunter. Our journey has been devoid of "easy" and relations with the other pantheons have been tenuous at best. The Great Fire of London and the eruption of Mount St. Helens were unfortunate side effects of our squabblings. Hope is not yet lost. The patriarchs of our Pantheons still possess the keys to their ancient homelands. It would be dangerous, and foolhardy, but If one of the families managed to congregate the keys... It is a long shot, but it could be our last chance of returning to our ancient power.

Hello, and Welcome to The gods Next Door. In this reboot of the original, you will take control of one of the old pagan gods who have fled their ancient homes due to The Slayer, a mysterious entity that appeared shortly before 1 Anno Domini. For mysterious reasons, nearly all of the old gods have recently migrated to Portland, Oregon. (Stop making that face it's so the plot will work). So, not only do you have to worry about a supernatural hunter capable of killing gods, but also the threat of the other Pantheons or "Families". It has been a long time since you were fully immortal, but you still have some nice tricks up your sleeve. I plan for this RP to be slower paced and styled after a slice of life or a political drama with the different pantheons scheming and jostling for power.

The power of the pagan gods is tied directly to the amount of worship they receive. This poses an obvious problem because there are basically no followers left. You are left with a fixed pool of power, every time you exert your divinity, you lose a portion of your remaining power. Lose all of it, and you are nothing more than human, an extremely long-lived and biologically un-aging human, but a very killable human nonetheless.

Ways of obtaining more power:
  1. Killing mortals- Mortal souls are comparable to a hearty meal, but they aren't much in the long run.
  2. Killing other gods- While this can be tricky, successfully killing another god will allow you to drain their corps of its power.

Killing gods
The Slayer is the only creature known to be able to kill gods without any special circumstances, but there are other ways. Godly weapons such as Mjolnir or Gungnir can kill other gods, but most of these are rare or have been lost by their owner.
The general way to kill a god is a wooden stake carved from the god's sacred tree (if applicable. If not, any tree will do) from the god's homeland dipped in the blood of their sacred animal (or sheeps blood if they don't have one.) Some gods have special conditions, and founder gods can be especially tricky to kill with some only vulnerable to their own weapons.

The Families
All of the Pantheons have been significantly reduced in size due to activities of the Slayer. Most are only the size of extended families and live in close proximity to each other.

  • Norse (Æsir/Vanir/Jötnar): Jørgensen
  • Greco-Roman: Agostini (This is the term I will use for any gods shared between the Greeks and Romans)
  • Egyptian: Sagira
  • Slavic: Milošević
  • Celtic/Gaelic/Brittish:O'Brien
  • Chinese/Japanese: Zhāng
  • Others are first come, first serve for creating the names for other pantheons

  1. My word as OP is final
  2. You are a pagan god but are far from invincible
  3. Killing mortals will get you in trouble with law enforcement, and subsequently the Slayer
  4. Don't be a jerk to other RPers
  5. No metagaming or godmoding (this will be put to a swift end)
  6. Use your energy sparingly, actions like teleporting is extremely taxing. Don't expect to be able to fight right after doing so. (messenger gods can teleport much easier)
  7. Most gods have a dominion that they can exploit (like Zeus with lighting and weather, but be reasonable and don't go throwing lightning willy-nilly)
  8. All gods are stronger and more athletic than humans, but not anything like the Hulk
  9. Have fun.

The Slayer

The Slayer has killed dozens of your brothers and sisters and has no known weaknesses. It possesses powerful telekinesis, can teleport (has rules, but they are for me to know and you to find out), and can detect gods even in their mortal forms. It appears that it needs the gods to reveal their true form to kill them. It is not some mindless monster, it can be reasoned with, but it will rarely comply. Whoever released it into the world destined it to eliminate all the pagans, but they have put up more of a fight than anticipated. It is drawn to use of godly power like a moth to a flame.

Is there any occupations that we are not able to do?

Don't be like the governor of Oregon or anything like that, but just keep in mind that you are trying to hide from the Slayer, so being a public figure might make you more visible, but it could potentially offer some form of protection as well...

What about a Police officer?

Name: Ranieri (Ron) Agostini
God: Sol Invictus
True Form:

Mortal Form:

Mortal Age: 36
Occupation: Sunbed salesman, veteran
Mortal Relation to Pantheon Founder: Husband
Personality: Ron is a very nostalgic, energetic person. Whenever he sets himself to a task, he doesn’t finish until that task is done. He’s an avid collector of historical artefacts, but terribly afraid of the dark. He talks a lot about Alba Longa, his birth place, and Rome, where he grew up. Huge fan of solar power.
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the later Roman gods. So, Sol isn't Greco-Roman like Zeus/Jupiter or Poseidon/Neptune, correct? He's just Roman?

Yes, he is fully Roman, deified by the Roman emperors and stemming from a Syrian-Roman sun deity.

neat. You might be able to have some common ground with the Greco-Romans. Or hate their guts because you both think of yourselves as Romans.

I count Zeus/Jupiter, etc as the same entity, so we can't have a Zeus that's Greek AND a Jupiter that's Roman if that makes sense.

Sol Invictus is accepted.

Edit: Would you be willing to pick a different surname to differentiate from the Greco-Romans?

Ahhh, well, in that case, perhaps he could take the surname Juliani? And he would probably dislike them pretending to be Roman, yes. There was a lot of tension between the Greek-loving Romans and the non-Greek-loving Romans, and Sol Invictus would probably be a member of the second group. Rome is Roman, not Greek. In that case, I probably don't have such an intimate relationship with the head of the Greco-Roman Pantheon.

Definitely interested.

I'm still deciding on what god I want to use, but I'm definitely going to use something from the Mesopotamian pantheon. (a combination of the Sumerian and Akkadian pantheons, similar to the Greco-Roman pantheon created by OP.) Their last name would be some variant of Dinger or Dinjer, but they would otherwise have Arabic/Assyrian sounding names.
Signatures are so 2014.

Name: Kamyar Rouhani
God: Ahura Mazda
True Form:
Image
Mortal Form: For some reason all of the pictures of senior Iranian people I find are very weird. But he’s that, an old Iranian dude
Mortal Age: 57
Occupation: Museum owner
Mortal Relation to Pantheon Founder: Well he’s him so I guess he has a pretty damn close relationship
Personality: Intelligent, wise, temperate (unless threatened, then he’s like a black girl who just got her wig pulled off), kind, curious, fortitudinous
Additional Information: In the age of Zoroastrianism, when Ahura Mazda was one of the most worshipped gods, with three whole empires that spanned the entire Arabic world over the course of a few centuries devoted to him, Ahura Mazda was a selfless and attention give god, giving his followers what they prayed and sacrificed for. Although when the Achaemenid, Parthian, and other empires began to fall and be conquered by neighboring, European or African empires Zoroastrianism began to decline.

In the following centuries when Greek, Roman, and Egyptian paganism and polytheism took away his follows, Ahura Mazda used all of his dwindling power to hold on to at least a few droves of devotees. It worked, kind of. By the turn of the millennium and shift from BCE to CE, Ahura Mazda had a few, scattered tens of thousands followers. He also was influential, at least ideologically and philosophically, in the new religions of the world, such as Christianity, Judaism, but he was not worshipped.

As time went on he became content with his remaining followers and with still being able to watch humanity grow and change. Although in the first centuries of the new millennium something horrible happened. The beast known as the Slayer arrived and chased Ahura Mazda away. In this migration he discovered that other gods existed, and he followed them to a divine hideaway. He went with them to the area of modern day Oregon and has remained there for many centuries, trying his best to keep in contact with his followers and keep his religion alive.

PS: I think I know the importance of Portland and the origins of the Slayer already
