A most excellent Yugoslav brother to the north of Hellas.

Despite our alliance, I imagine several groups and secret societies would try to get us into conflict over Bulgaria, Albania, and Macedonia. Man, we are pretty set up for the Balkans to just break apart like glass in the next few decades.

Ethnic and religious makeup: Mainly Great or Little Russians, also many Tatars, Poles & Balts. The east-Slavs are generally Orthodox Christians, the Poles & Lithuanians are mostly Catholics, Tatars are Islamic, and the Estonians/Latvians/Baltic Germans are mostly Protestants. Also many Jews.
Main rifle: Lebel Model 1886 rifle
Population excluding colonies: Roughly 20 million, the government has never taken a full census.
Capital City: Moskva
Brief History Since 1492: Their history is broadly the same as in our universe until 1533, when Ivan IV acceded to the throne of the Grand Duchy of Muscovy as a three year old. Several factions of noblemen competed to control the regency, and in this timeline, the group that was successful was that lead by the Belsky family, originally from Lithuania.
Dmitry and Ivan Belsky lead Russian armies against the Tatars and Udmurts, defeated several Mongol holdouts and prevented any other European power from moving in to take advantage of the Russian prince's youth. At his coming of age, Ivan married a daughter of the Belsky family and followed their lead, using the same skills that lead him to be nicknamed the Terrible in our timeline, he crushed the Nogai horde and the Khanate of Kazan, but was unable to push any further into Europe, the Poles, Lithuanians and Teutons managing to hold him back.
Ivan's son, Dmitry was another good Grand Duke, defeating the Crimean Khan and attempting another war against the Lithuanians. Several advisors pressed him to expand eastwards into Siberia, but because it was all empty tundra, and without the Americas to show off the benefits of colonialism (and without Siberia as a handy stepping stone to America), he was reluctant, prefering to consolidate his control over his own territory.
Later dukes also failed to expand their rule eastwards, a few expeditions were attempted to bring Russian rule into the Caucasus, these armies were beaten back by Circassians and other hardy mountain peoples, and the Muscovians decided to cut their losses. What they couldn't gain through war, they would try to get through diplomacy. A succession crisis in the Kingdom of Poland was exploited and a Muscovian prince was elected as the next king, he thankfully proved to be a rather able ruler, and his heir was also elected.
And so it went, one king after another, eventually the Baltic states were swallowed up, the last one to fall being the Duchy of Courland (although several of it's colonies in Africa survived). The capital of the Polish-Muscovian Commonwealth was in Krakov, and the szlachta system of priviliged nobility spread to Russia. Many of the boyars polonised themselves, taking Polish names and marrying Polish women, although they did not often convert to Catholicism.
In the early 1800s, the Polish-Muscovian Commonwealth began to industrialise, under King Bogislav western advisors were brought in, factories were built, the first railroads laid down. The military started to receive rifles or carbines instead of antiquated muskets. The riches of Russia kept it's people well provided for, and all was good. The vote was extended from a small cabal of electors to all registered shliakhta (noblemen) in the commonwealth, and there was talk about soon extending it to the wealthy commoners, a few radicals even suggested total male suffrage.
All was good until 1848 anyway. An riot in Warsaw got out of hand when the military police fired at a crowd of demonstrators, the protesters began to fight back and soon there was rebellion all over western Poland. This soon spread to the Baltic, and after the unfortunate defeat and suicide of a Russian general in Masuria things were looking bleak, several European powers seemed ready to intervene, and the now aging king Bogislav was struck with a severe illness.
Eventually the King was forced to abdicate and died soon after. His nephew, the child Nikolay, was elected as the next king, the government reluctantly agreed to pull it's forces out of Western Poland, however they kept some of the east of the kingdom, and with the troops freed from Poland the Baltic rebellions were quickly put down.
Now style as simply the 'Muscovian' Commonwealth, the nation is humiliated and has been ceaselessly modernising, industrialising and building up, the military is full of ambitious young officers who would just love to be the man to retake Krakov, and the new king Nikolay, now almost forty, has never forgotten the circumstances under which he became king. He wants to one day make the Commonwealth truly great again.

Nowhere near the centre of it all, but still keeping up to an extent.
Edit: By my previous statement, I’m referring more to the Second Industrial Revolution, so around Great War Era stuff, not the current IC time.

Can't you just rip off how Japan did and upscale it?

That’s sort of what I’m doing, but Great Qing, being around 10 times the size of Japan, and with rulers who are questionably Chinese, can’t jump into gear as quickly as Japan, which is why I simply used Qianlong as the instigator instead of one of the emperors of the 19th century. For Qing China to survive at least well into the 20th century, the POD needs to be Qianlong or the emperor after him, no later, for the aforementioned reason. So China’s industrial capabilities are roughly on par with Austria-Hungary or Japan in our timeline, that being industrial but not quite Western Europe levels, but being such a large nation, there’s still a great deal more that can be done compared to what has been accomplished.

This is another universe, so historicity isn't that important :p , in this timeline they use Lebels. The Australian & Filipino rifles were
both from 1889, so I assume there's some wiggle room, as who's to say that something wouldn't be invented a few years earlier in this universe.

Also I assume they aren't actually the exact same rifles as the ones from our universe, the butterfly effect probably makes sure that most of the companies in this timeline are different. The guns are functionally identical though, just having been invented by a Russian or whatever instead of the otl guys.

I could switch to something like a 1874 Fusil Gras rifle though, doesn't make that much difference.

Brief History Since 1492: (where different from OTL)

1600s
The 1600s saw Germany torn apart by religious wars, with a third of the population being wiped out. German rulers began investing heavily in education and the sciences, and with the conservatism of the Pope stifling the renaissance in Italy, the new center became the Protestant German States.

The 1600s would also mark the consolidation of power of the state known as Brandenburg-Prussia or just Prussia. It emerged as a leader of protestant states after the 30 years war and made a series of alliances and guarantees that cemented dominance in the years to come. Slowly but steadily it absorbed more German states and peoples through war and diplomacy.

1700s
The 1700s started off with the War of Spanish Succession, the Spanish monarch was dead and the French King claimed his wife, the only child of the monarch, was the rightful heir. Many in Spain and across Europe did not want to see a joint Spanish-French Kingdom so war began, raging across Europe and parts of Africa. The bloody war finally ended in a draw, the french queen renounced all claims to the throne of Spain, for the contributions to the war Prussia received Gibraltar marking a shift into naval focus for the German state. Gibraltar would be used as a base to invade Morocco in the mid 1700s and claim the African state. The occupation would claim thousands of German and Moroccan lives but eventually the colony calmed and became a productive member of the fledgling Prussian empire.

Germany and Berlin in particular became a hotbed for egalitarian ideas and the sciences, a hub of arts and culture. This in turn led to the “Peaceful Revolution” in the 1780s when the king would cede a great deal of power and transition into a Constitutional Monarchy taking the title Emperor, militaristic factions would soon seize control of the government resulting in a number of wars aimed at establishing dominance over Europe. Culminating in a grand conflict against the French which gave Prussia control over German speaking areas in Alsace Lorraine not controlled by Baden. More importantly it led to Prussia being championed by the other German states as their leader. The Emperor of Prussia became the Emperor of Germany, uniting the disparate states in a constitutional monarchy.

1800s

The 1800s marked a shift away from the rural lifestyle of the Germans, a population boom and migration to the cities brought on by a good economy and revolutionary farming techniques revolutionized the economy. Public schools, workers rights and a limited healthcare system were first tried in France and an emphasis on “the people” became a common rallying cry among french politicians as they fought for universal suffrage.

German Colonists first arrived in Somalia in the late 1700s and over the decades grew and expanded, largely neglected by the German government. However a trade dispute with the local tribes led to the massacre of nearly a thousand colonists, sparking outrage across Germany. A military venture was launched which conquered Somalia and turned it into a formal colony.

In 1823 the king of Sri Lanka who had long been supported by the Germans died and his sons fought for control over the Island. The younger son turned to Germany for aid claiming the other brother was anti-european. The Germans sent an expedition and easily defeated the Sri Lankan forces, then turn it into a puppet kingdom.

In 1860 the Germans would embark on new military adventure in the Second Great Turkish War, aiding the Greeks in seizing parts of Turkey, assisting the Greeks at sea and landing troops in Egypt, intent of seizing the Suez and perhaps the holy land. Despite the technological advantage of the French, issues with supply and logistics rendering similar results to Napoleon's campaign, tactical victories but overall a strategic defeat. The Germans received modest benefits from the Second Treaty of Constantinople and the French Emperor would be present for the crowning of King George I of Greece as Emperor. The main benefit of the treaty was the agreement of a joint venture to dig the suez canal with the ottomans, a joint venture and ownership with the new Hellenic empire. This would prove vital to maintaining and expanding the German colonial empire in the far east.

With the Suez secure the German launched expeditions into Indonesia in 1876 securing the the Kingdom of Malaya, the conquests are fresh and a large German military presence is still maintained, but good and generous German colonial policy is a large boon for preventing rebellion and ensuring general tranquility.

Now France turns to the future, at the cutting edge of culture and science, with one of the most formidable militaries in the world and a colonial empire, securing the legacy of Germany is foremost in the minds of its leaders.

Nah. Borders are bad, you don't even own the Suez but just the Sinai desert, why does Germany own Morocco when European powers with a Mediterranean coast will have had a strategic interest in it since before 1500. Also having the Franco-Prussian war happen thing for thing 100 years earlier doesn't make sense.

I'm also kind of annoyed by the fact that you've been so indecisive. First no app, then a French app, then a German app.

Got my first IC post up. Hope it's good - it took way too long to get my creative juices flowing to finish it. Spat out a bunch of words in the space of half an hour.

Nation Name: The German Republic

Colonies: Ghana, Sri Lanka, Malaysa, Sumantra, Somalia
Government type and leader: Imperial Republic, Emperor Wilhelm I, Chancellor Otto Von Bismark
Primary culture and religion: German, slight Protestant majority over Catholic
Ethnic and religious makeup: German primary culture, mostly Catholic but the constitution guarantees religious freedom so it has become a haven for Muslims and Jews as well as protestant faiths
Main rifle: Mauser Model 1871
Population excluding colonies: 36 million
Capital City: Berlin

Brief History Since 1492: (where different from OTL)

1600s
Deviation from the OTL begins at the birth of the Renaissance, with being more under the influence of the Papacy then the OTL, the conservatism of the Pope stifled the renissance in Italy and as a result many of the cultural and scientific innovations in the OTL take place in various German states, with Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg being centers of Renaissance thought in the timeline. This was facilitated by the rejection of the Pope during the reformation and the emergence of protestantism.

The thirty years war would wipe out eight million people, mostly germans, mainly from violence, famine, plagues, and military engagements. But among the ashes of Germany rose the state of Brandenburg-Prussia or just Prussia. The leader of the protestant german states during the conflict, this would be the start of the Prussian rise to power, as the created a series of alliances and guarantees within the HRE to counter Austrian and Catholic threats. Their leadership provided a coutnerbalance against the larger southern German states and Prussia began to consolidate power, slowly absorbing the northern german states.

1700s
As Prussia grew so did the egalitarian ideals encouraged by the renaissance and the protestant reformation. Taking inspiration from the English Bill of Rights of 1689 a group of nobles, middle class merchants and protestant clergy led by Christian Wolff pushed for the equality before the law, mass protests and demonstrations took place across Prussia and the rest of Germany. In 1720 Prussia became a Constitutional Monarchy, reforming the economy, society and government, based on the concept of “Equal before the law”.

Seeking to count themselves among the great powers of Europe, Prussia would fight in the War of Austrian Succession. They became a key player countering Austrian power, winning much prestige and a number of major battles, dominion over the German states was confirmed, knocking out Austria as the leader of the HRE. Prussia itself would find its powerful position in Germany assaulted in the 1750s as the potential strength of a unified North German State became apparent. Many of Prussia’s allies cut and ran as it was targeted, despite overwhelming odds the Prussian held out and essentially forced a white peace, the belligerents tiring of a vicious war of attrition.

Prussia would declare itself the Defender of the German People after the war of Austrian Succession, taking a hard line against outside influences notably the French, Poles and Swedes. In an alliance with Russian states Prussia would age war against the Scandinavian and Russian powers finally driving the Swedes out of Germany and taking disputed territories from both Poland and Denmark in the 1760s. Prussia notably would not directly control the territory, but instead set up a number of independent states protected by Prussia, which did a great deal to reduce the infamy of the Prussia state

Prussia would rest for a number of years focusing on interior development until the rise of Napoleon in the late 18th and early 19th century. Prussia and the rest of the HRE proceeded to get badly beaten by Napoleon, forced to dismantle the HRE and submit to French dominance. Finally in a final coalition Napoleon was defeated, led in part by the prussian king Frederick William III. This was the final push necessary, the King of Prussia rode a wave of popularity and was crowned Emperor of the North German Federation in 1817, uniting over half the German states.

1800s
The 1800s marked a shift away from the rural lifestyle of the Germans, a population boom and migration to the cities brought on by a good economy and revolutionary farming techniques revolutionized the economy. Public schools, workers rights and a limited healthcare system were first tried in Germany and an emphasis on “the people” became a common rallying cry among German politicians as they fought for universal suffrage.

However the biggest change that took place in Germany was industrialization, the many decades the German states and especially Prussia had education paid off, and the defeats at the hands of the French convinced Prussia great change was needed. A new generation of minds, such as Karl Freiherr vom Stein and Karl August Furst von Hardenberg instituted a series of reforms in the public and private sphere, the constitution, administration, society and economy of Prussia was flipped on its head. Free Trade boomed and Prussian ships could soon be seen in every port in the world, the nobility lost its power and the military became the most professional in Europe. Public Schools received a massive investment and universal suffrage and a more republican model of government was adopted.

German Law was codified across the NGF, a radical austerity policy was adopted, economic policy inspired by thinkers such as Adam Smith were at the forefront. Beauracracy became much more efficient, customs fees were lowered, tax reforms and wholescale fiscal reform took place, a true flurry of activity.

The Southern German States which had not joined the Federation began moving away from the Austrian-Hungarian influence and looked North. The federation was winning prestige through war, colonization in west africa and scientific achievements, the economy was booming so joining became an attractive prospect that led to the annexation of Bavarian and the Czech peoples in the 1840s and changing the name of the nation to the German Empire, although it was much more a republic in practice.

Abroad German colonists settled in the Horn of Africa, and the military turned Sri Lanka into a puppet Kingdom. In 1860 the Germans would embark on a military adventure in the Second Great Turkish War, aiding the Greeks in seizing parts of Turkey, assisting the Greeks at sea and landing troops in Egypt, intent of seizing the Suez and perhaps the holy land. Despite the technological and discipline advantage of the Germans, issues with supply and logistics rendered similar results to Napoleon's campaign in Egypt, major and consistent tactical victories but overall a strategic force withdraw. The Germans received modest benefits from the Second Treaty of Constantinople and the German Emperor would be present for the crowning of King George I of Greece as Emperor. The main benefit of the treaty was the agreement of a joint venture to dig the suez canal with the Ottomans and Hellenic Empire, a joint venture and ownership with the new Hellenic empire.

Now Germany turns to the future, at the cutting edge of culture and science, with one of the most formidable militaries in the world and a colonial empire, securing the legacy of Germany is foremost in the minds of its leaders.

Accepted.

Due to no USA, Ottomans have faced serious conflicts with ambitious Europeans. It has become more difficult to keep minorities in control. Greeks, Albanians, Romanians and Armenians have began revolting against the Sublime Porte. The Ottomans have established control over the Tip of Horn of Africa. The internal Arabian deserts to have come under Ottoman rule. Turks have been spread all over in the Empire. Envoys had been sent to many nations to establish relations. France, Germany and Hyderabad are very close to the Ottoman Empires. British and Portuguese have been instigating rebels.

The governors of Egypt had declared independence earlier, only to be conquered by some other nations.

Most likely to win WW1 and survive for a few more centuries.
