Background Lore


The continent of Astalia; a large spraling landform with a variety of beautiful features ranging from soft or rocky beaches, to might mountains, with soft rolling plains and hills thrown in between. Many generations ago it had been ruled over by three separate kingdoms each nearly as powerful as their neighbors, until The Grand Struggle, as it is known by most on the continent. It was at this time the three main Kingdoms; The Acraine Empire, Kingdom of Hasno, and The Prijam Kingdom, began to do war with one another for a great many reasons. Thousands from the main kingdoms and some of their vassals, died in this great conflict. It only grew worse through the use of Dragons, whom came from unknown origins, became weapons of terror on the battlefield, particularly by the Acraine Empire, who used them heavily in battle. Though, there came a point where even the Acraine were unable to control such power, and the Dragons began to wage war against the weakened humans, almost as if it were their goal before. Pushed back to the edges of their homes, the humans of all three kingdoms managed to push away their seemingly petty squabbles and face off the Dragons, only through shear luck, a strong will, and a bit of help from some holy weapons, were the Dragons finally pushed back.

Now, humanity has spent the last few hundred years rebuilding from this time. The old nations have fallen into many new and aspiring kingdoms both small and large in size and power. The signs of The Grand Struggle, have been reduced to little more than legends of mighty heroes and the few ruins of once mighty castles and bastions that lie around the countryside. Humanity has moved on with its life, and for the time peace had rung true throughout the continent, most nations too concerned with rebuilding and their own interests to set their sights upon their neighbors. Though in the past few years times have changed. From the ruins of Acraine Empire in the south a new power, in the form of the Friala Confederation, headed by the Pluenian Empire, has risen. Preached as a protective union of the Southern States, they have openly annexed many of their neighbors, and turning those who submit into Vassals with limited autonomy. Such actions have put them at odds with the Kingdom of Astya to the North, Zendle in the East, and others, who look to form their own leagues in anticipation for what maybe another Grand Struggle. But for the time being the world hangs in a delicate balance, and all it takes is a single event to throw it into chaos once again.


RP Summary


Hello! And welcome to Tales of Astalia. Now, right off the bat, let me clear one thing up; you may have noticed the little "Fire-Emblem Inspired" at the top of OP. If you've never played the games, or don't even know what they are, don't worry. The Games, their mechanics, events, characters, etc. will have no control or connection to the RP whatsoever. We are simply borrowing the rough setting and time period, along with some other "set pieces" in order to give the RP a bit of a kick start, so not everything is from scratch. Thus if you've never played the games, you won't be at a disadvantage or missing out on anything in the RP. All in all, this is a light to mild fantasy RP.

With that out of the way, we can get down to business. This RP will be all about you and your characters. Your party to to speak, and their journey around the Continent and its various Kingdoms. These characters can be from any of the nations, whether you created it or someone else does. They can be from any walk of life; Nobles to Mercenaries, Knights to Footmen, Grand Wizards to Apprentices. It's all up to you. There will an overarching story, as you can tell from the Background Lore, but in the beginning you will likely be separate and embarking on your own journeys, that will eventually be tied together.


1. OP and Co-ops words are law. That is unless I, the OP, overrule something
2. Be nice and polite. There's no such thing as a bad idea, well that might not be right, but we're here to have fun, not fight
3. You may control anywhere from 1-4 Characters at the beginning of the RP, but others can be added as the story progresses
4. Combat between player characters should be talked about before hand with the players involved
5. Don't make assumptions, ask if something seems off
6. Standard NS stuff that you all know

Some Basic Clarifications:
- Any Horse or Creature mounted class can of course dismount to fight and do other tasks

- Class Weapons only denote weapons a character is proficient in and should use

- Skills don't refer to anything you'll see on the wiki. Moreover they simply mean things like Cavaliers are good at riding horses, Knights are more durable, etc.

- Class names do not equal titles. You can have a Prince be a "Hero" class, or a "General" Class carry the title Sir/Knight

- Magic Triangle:
Dark --> Anima --> Light --> Dark | Anima have no advantages over other Anima

- Magic is solely cast through the use of Tomes, which are similar to "Grimoires"

- Magic ability is technically non-hereditary, and seemingly random in appearance within an individual | IE: You're parents don't have to be Mages for you to be one, but a mage with mage parents is naturally stronger

- Magic cannot be cast indefinitely, and takes both a mental and physical strain on the wielder

- Weaknesses:
Armored Classes are weaker to Magic [except Paladins] | All classes are weak to their respective "Slayer" weapons

- Stat values of a class have no effect over a character | Generalizations still apply: Knights are slow, Mymridons fast, Pegasus Knights more resistant to magic, etc.

Bio:
Isa was the first and only child born to the royal family of Astya, her mothering having died in birth complication and her father refusing to remarry due to the pleads of a younger Isa, though possibly a selfish request the King obliged and she remained the only child of the Royal family, and thus her childhood was anything but ordinary for someone of her age. Her father was getting on in his years, having served as the King since he was just a teenager due to the untimely death of his father due to the complication of the Second Zendle War, he spent much of his time alone vociferously ensuring the well being of the Kingdom and its populace, never once concerned for his own health, leaving Isa in the care of the many aids around the Castle. Yet this was something that the young Isa was simply not to let be, as an active child she despised the long lecturers given to her in the Royal Palace and would often sneak away to the ground courtyard to play around in the fields and forests surrounding the Castle. It was hear she would meet a young boy by the name of Anton, who would quickly grow to be her friend.

The boy in question was actually a young lad by the name of Anton Altero, the Son of the commander of the Knights of Astya and a high ranking Commander in its military, the boy just entering Training to become a Knight himself. The two were supposed to be introduced when they were slightly older, but seeing as it had come early the two friends, the Commander and the King decided to let it played out on its own. Pretty soon thr young Isa was engaging in sword play with Anton, though her talents always seemed to lie elsewhere in her studies of magic, she still loved the sword and would spend hours a day practicing with Anton. Eventually as they grew older, their time together was less frequent as Anton began to take on more roles of a young Knight, but they still found time late in the evenings to practice their dueling, and their friendship continued to grow. She would also find another friend in a young Zendle Princess she studied with. Now they sit in their respective roles; Isa as the Crown Princess and Anton as the head of her guard.

Bio:
Jerro was born into a relatively peaceful time for the Prayan Kingdom, a small nation made up of Sword fighting practitioners and mainly duelists at that. His early life, as that of most Prayan children both male and female was spent practicing the Sword on the care of a Clan Master. Even early in training he showed promising signs of becoming a skilled warrior, both quick in his intuition and reflexes. This grace period, would not last however. Only about two years into his training as a Duelist, at the age of six, problems began to sprout up in the Prayan Kingdom, as a power struggle around the ill Grand Master began between the very Clan Jerro was born into and another clan who were seeking the powerful for themselves. In fear of the collapse of the nation, due to a coup orchestrated by the rival clan, Jerro was to be sent await Thus, with his uncle, Jerro set out for the northern nation of Holyion, a Merchant kingdom where they would likely be able to find shelter, and in truth moved out to a remote village near the border with Belkose. It would be here that he would spent the next five years continuing his training as a sword master, though he was often given the freedom to begin to develop his own fighting style, one that was much more akin to a battlefield than dueling. This would ast for sometime until a fateful day the small village was overrun by a Mercenary army, thought to have originated from Pluena, though it was difficult to tell one from the other, and his uncle was killed in the defense of the town center. Though, Jerro was able to escape, being given a strangely shaped sword wrapped in cloth as well as a small paper rolled up in a tube. He was instructed to search out for a man named Olso, a Mercenary from Praya who was a friend of his uncle, and to never use the sword unless in the most dire circumstances.

Thus at the age of eleven he set out in search of the mysterious mercenary named Olso, finding him through Free Mercenaries Guild, and joining up with his company for sometime. It was under the guidance of Olso that his skills with the sword truly flourished. The nearly constant combat and the instruction of a veteran fighter soon allowed his skills to grow immensely, putting him on par if not above most of the fighters in the company and even those in some of the national armies by the time he reached thirteen. It was then that his first real fight began when Olso's Company was instructed to join forces with Astyai forces in the third Zendle-Astya war. It was the first time he had fought against the regulars of another army, and was greatly impressed by the skills of the Zendle fighters and that of their Astyai allies as well. He quickly gained the company even further reputation in the struggles of the north, where a Zendle naval invasion threatened the small kingdom to the North of Astya. Here, just outside the main port, himself and a small group of Astyai Knights were forced to hold off three companies worth of soldiers, with only half a company of their own. Setting an ambush in the plains, they were able to catch the traveling soldiers off guard, but soon found themselves surrounded. Soon all that was left was Jerro, forced to fight nearly seventy soldiers on his own. Surprisingly he was able to hold off about forty of them before his own blade chipped and broke from over use. Down to last stand, he was forced to use the wrapped sword his uncle had passed off to him. With it, he was able to quickly dispatch of the remaining thirty men in only a few minutes, easily slicing through their armor and weapons as if they were butter. Witnessing the shear power of strength of the mysterious warrior of the field, the remaining company of soldiers in the town surrendered to the warrior. Though he was interested to learn of a similar acting sword being used in the Plains to great effect against Astyai soldiers. Upon learning of this, Jerro set out to learn more about this warrior, knowing it could be a danger to his comrades in the Mercenary Company who had been fighting heavily in the buffer state between Zendle and Astya for sometime. Though having spent four years fighting in the war, he never again used the sword, yet his fame continued to follow him, even earning his recognition from the Commander of the Knights of Astya, though he was never able to cross blades with the mysterious warrior from Zendle. After the ending of the war, he returned to his work as a Mercenary, traveling all around Astalia for the next eight years, fighting in a variety of comflicts from simply power struggles to minor wars, though nothing on the scale of the Zendle-Astya war.

It was after this time that his name once again became news in Astya, not since the mysterious mercenary appeared and helped lay waste to the Zendle Armies in the Third war. He had returned to the Nation as a simply passerby, attempting to make his way to the Northern kingdom where his legend had begun nearly fifteen years earlier with his amazing last stand against the Zendle invaders in the small port town. He had befriend a young lord and now General of the north kingdoms forces. Rebels had been giving them trouble, and they had grown suspicious of the actions of Zendle in the following years after the war. Having befriended the young lord who was of his age, one of the few nobles he had found himself getting along with, he agreed and took the travels to meet him. It just so happened that an envoy from Astya was visiting at the same time, Jerro having been delayed in Belkose for several days on a trip back from Holyion where the Companies headquarters were stationed. It was here he met the King of Astya for the first time. An older man who struck him as similar to Olso in many ways, with a calm yet demanding aura around him, the kind of thing that easily made the normally apathetic, at least towards nobles, Jerro listen to him. After getting involved in a duel with a young Knight from the Northern Kingdom, a a few years older than him, for a demonstration at the suggestion of the young lord, and winning he caught the attention of the King who asked him if he'd be interested in serving in his court. He had formed ties with many in the Astyan military, due to their comradary in the War, and with the encouragement of his young lord friend, he accepted, much to the resentment of the a young Knight who had been traveling with the King. He would then spend the next three years working as part of the Crown Princess' guard as an honorary knight refusing to be offically Knighted saying his true home lay elsewhere though never specifiying exactly where. He would keep his distance for the most part, prefering to remain with the Knights and Soldiers of the nation, rather than loiter around the interior of the Castle.

History:
Holding it's prestige as one of the oldest nations on the continent, the federation of Holyion was once known as the 'Holy Kingdom' during it's early days, where it ran wild with magic and different races and species with no limits. It was found before the grand struggle, it's origins dating back to unknown times. It is said that the kingdom was one of the rare vassal states to survive the great struggle, mainly through it's vast magic capable population along with the natural option of escaping to sea. When it first started, it was nothing more than an out of the way fishing village of poverty that mainly went unnoticed as another poor village.

However, there was one thing that they had, and that was magic along with fish. With word of it's fish spreading through the land, more and more eventually came to both fish as a way of life and taste the rumored fish of the heavens, helping to boost the economy to allow for more development. Eventually, it developed into a small kingdom that slowly prospered under it's king. However, there would soon be talk of who his successor would be, despite the fact that he was far from kicking the bucket. Eventually, the Grand Struggle struck the kingdom hard, destroying most of it's infrastructure and severely damaging the economy. It was even rumored that the kingdom had been home to one holy weapon.

Years after that, the king had been replaced under his own orders by another. This time however, the king was quickly overthrown fast as the tax was raised sharply and the laws changed to be more authoritarian. However, following his beheading this lead to an empty hole of power. In order to prevent an uprising, the Ministry of Magic had blessed his son with the gift of eternal youth. However, the ritual failed and his body was fragmented into 3 forms. In order to preserve him, 3 sacrifices had been called upon, triplets, to hold his soul. After the ritual succeeded, the three kings rose up to power as the people rejoice over a hopefully new age of peace.

-Maiden's Curse: Due to a curse placed upon the sword as a blessing long ago, the sword is more powerful when in the hands of a maiden of the royal court than in the hands of a man, and is said to only be at it's full potential when it is with a maiden. However, there has been only 5 men to fully wield the sword at it's full power, so it is more likely for a woman to wield the sword at full power than a man. It is also said that it's power alone could drive even the strongest of men insane with voices.

-Weightlessness: With the blessings of the kings and the magic of the mages, the sword has nearly no weight despite it's massive size.

-Dragon slayer: Like most holy weapons, the blade is more than capable of slicing through dragons left and right. No one knows how it is achieved, but it is commonly believed to have had something to do with a now defunct cult.

With word of it's fish spreading through the land, more and more eventually came to both fish as a way of life and taste the rumored fish of the heavens, helping to boost the economy to allow for more development. Eventually, it developed into a small kingdom that slowly prospered under it's king. However, there would soon be talk of who his successor would be, despite the fact that he was far from kicking the bucket. Eventually, the Grand Struggle struck the kingdom hard, destroying most of it's infrastructure and severely damaging the economy. It was even rumored that the kingdom had been home to one holy weapon.

Years after that, the king had been replaced under his own orders by another. This time however, the king was quickly overthrown fast as the tax was raised sharply and the laws changed to be more authoritarian. However, following his beheading this lead to an empty hole of power. In order to prevent an uprising, the Ministry of Magic had blessed his son with the gift of eternal youth. However, the ritual failed and his body was fragmented into 3 forms. In order to preserve him, 3 sacrifices had been called upon, triplets, to hold his soul. After the ritual succeeded, the three kings rose up to power as the people rejoice over a hopefully new age of peace.

Well Lances do have a good range on them, so its a slight advantage over Swords.

I actually forgot to ask this, but will hidden weapons (like the daggers from fates) be a thing in this setting? I was actually wondering if I should make a character class that uses them.

And if we go by any weapon triangle mechanics would they be in the same category as bows?

Hmm...Well the Triangle mechanics apply more to the Tomes than anything, and less towards the weapons. For the other weapons, its much looser. So, I'd say we'll treat daggers as swords, and just give them to the thief, assassin, and rogue. Since technically a dagger is just a shorter sword. [And anything can technically be thrown]

Ah alright. I'm currently weighing a choice between making a war cleric or a butler/maid (because who doesn't love sharp-dressing ninjas that also heal people?).

I thought that combat was a rochambeau where lances beat swords, swords beat axes, and axes beat lances (by beat, I mean has an advantage over)? If that is actually the case, then lances would be particularly useful.

Selakia's military is a lot of knights (cavalry), about as many prestigious mages, and artillery. Essentially only heavy generic infantry instead of pikes or peasantry.

The combat is designed to be a bit more fluided than a simple "I have a Lance so I automatically kill everyone with a Sword." Each has their advantages and counters. Swords are plentiful [as most classes can use them]. They're normally lighter than a Lance or Axe, so wielders can be faster. Swords rely on fast and percise strikes in close combat in order to succeeded. Thus they have an advantage over the slower and more cumborsome axes, and are at a disadvantage against Lancers who can keep them at range. Lances have a middle ground of speed, but their biggest advantage is range and being slightly more powerful than swords [for physical reasons], yet they have a disadvantage in closer range, and over extend when dealing with axe users. Axes of course use the over extension of Lancers to defeat them, but have to worry about the speed and percision of a Sword Wielder due to their lack of agility with the weapon. That's at least how it plays out in my head. That way anyone can defeat anyone no matter the type of weapon they use.


As for the app; The image is broken btw. I was hoping people would avoid using Fates classes and weapons, so I could avoid a headache on my end, but seems that was a bit of a pipe dream. I'm going to assume, the Naginata Lance is an Iron Lance? And though the bio seems a bit rushed, I'm going to accept the character.

Hmm, so the military is split about 50/50? Interesting. Also no gunpowder, but I think you're aware of that

I actually took the liberty to look up Fates' weapon triangle again to jog my memory. That game actually put tomes, hidden weapons, and bows into their own weapon triangle. It worked hand in hand with the original one, like this.

Though for simplicity's sake, we could probably just say that daggers are essentially swords, and leave bows out of the triangle aspect of things as usual. After all it's only meant to generalize what has an advantage over what. Even in the games a skilled sword user would decimate a lance user if his level/stats were high enough.

That being said I'll get my character apps up in a little bit. Anyone interested in a butler?
