On September 1st, 2020, the West Virginia Federation of Teachers marched into the State Capitol in Charleston and promptly shot to death all one hundred and thirty four members of the West Virginia State Legislature.
The process of arresting them was tricky, but accomplished by a team of very clever detectives and negotiators. Forty of the forty-one teachers responsible for the massacre were tried on charges of terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder. The last one, Karen Wong, an English teacher at Bridgeport High School who organized the trip to Charleston, was charged with a bit more.
You are a public defender and have been appointed by the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of the State of West Virginia to defend Karen Wong. Chuck Miller, Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney, will be personally leading the State's best lawyers against you. They will be heralded as heroes. You will be ridiculed, despised, and, except for a few, hated by every West Virginian for your apparent contempt for democracy and compassion for a terrorist and mass murderer.
Oh, and you're not getting a pay raise unless you win.

This roleplay will follow a two-stage structure: pretrial and trial. Pretrial will be a lot of preparing for the case, with depositions and interviews and what not. The trial will involve each lawyer arguing a part of the case (or just a few, depending on how your defense team decides to argue the case). This is a character-driven roleplay, so rather than being all law and order, days will come to an end and your characters will go to a bar and chat, go home and be miserable, and come back to work in the morning and talk in the hallways before getting back into the run of things. This will be true for both stages, since the trial will last multiple IC days. Each stage will probably last 2-3 OOC weeks.
Legal knowledge not needed. Roleplaying ability is always appreciated, but as with all of my roleplays this is an open roleplay — if you can fill out the app in full, you can participate, since I firmly believe everyone deserves the chance to learn to roleplay. Sign up using the app below.
