Hai

My only brush with SF of this period is that atrociously awful novel of Hubbard's, but in my defense I was like...eleven, and I had no idea who he was.

It's been a long time since I've done any writing, but we'll see what happens.

She didn't last long in the service, and eventually joined the mercenary business, as their hacker, the ones that put in charge of making sure their service is secured and having access to the prying eyes of mercenaries who steal data. I started working on my app yesterday. It should be done soon.

App:

Name: James "Shrapnel" Dawson
Age: 44
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Nationality/Allegiance: Oneself
Physical appearance:
About 6 ft tall, his whole left side is cybernetic, with his cybernetic parts being dark gray. His one organic eye is brown. He is bald, and usually wears space marine type armor.
Identifying Marks: The whole left side of his body is cybernetic.

Skills: Gunnery/combat
Personality: Almost emotionless, cruel, cold, and logical.
Weaknesses: Speed (he's pretty slow), his cybernetic limbs make him a little uncoordinated (because they weren't connected quite properly in some spots)
Likes/dislikes: dislikes: working closely with others, avian aliens Likes: making money, combat
Interests:
Fears: Avian aliens

Bio:
James Dawson was born in deep space, on a smuggling ship thousands of light years from Terra. By the age of five, he was running around the ship, making repairs where adults could not fit, such as the ductwork. He was in a battle for the first time at the age of 6, when they were attacked by pirates. They fended off the pirates, but not before their shields and weapons systems were knocked offline, with their engines somehow staying undamaged. He was sent into the ship's ducts to help fix the shield generators.

By the time he was 15, he had seen many places and stations. He had seen death often. His own parents had bought it in a pirate attack when he was 13. When he was 16, he was made a gunner on the smuggling ship. While at this post, he fought in a dozen ship-to-ship actions, 20 odd smuggling runs, and a couple run-ins with the Imperium. At age 22, they were boarded by a group of avian aliens.

One of his shipmates was reaching for his sidearm to set it on the ground. The aliens misinterpreted the action as a threat. The aliens opened fire, slaughtering the crewmen. James tried to fight back, but an alien chucked a grenade into the storeroom he was hiding in. The ensuing blast permanently maimed him. It destroyed and damaged much of his left side. It also sent a chunk of shrapnel into his brain, destroying his center of emotion, leaving him almost emotionless. The aliens realized their mistake, and tried to patch up the survivors, including James. The only way they could save him was to give him cybernetic body parts. They than dropped him off at a station somewhere, where he found work as a hired gun, and that's what he's done since. He ended up on Thrawn B7 after a mission.
Reason for Being on Thrawn B7: Ended up there after his most recent mission.

Did you know that the dimensions on the Isaac are...surprisingly realistic? At its current size, it's about the equal of two Empire State Buildings stacked next to each other and elongated by ~50%. Modern buildings codes recommend a max occupancy of 1 person/200 sq. feet, putting the max occupancy of the skyscraper around 13,500 people(so 27,000 for our ship if it were purely deck space with no living quarters). When factoring in armor, weapons, and storage space for the hanger, the Isaac's upper limit of 4,500 is actually pretty spot on.

I don't know if this was planned out or not, but I was just curious and I think this is pretty impressive.

I was rereading some of the stuff I've written for this RP, and I'm only now realizing that I keep writing horror/grimdark in a light and jolly atmosphere. Looking back, everything I've written is either some form of a Wretched Hive or something involving a lot of death and malady.

So here's another one:
Image
Some hangar within the station, in one of the nicer areas

Planet Name: Mining Platform Sedcograd; many other nicknames.
Atmosphere: In constant flux. The air filters onboard went out of production 40 years ago, so atmosphere really depends on whatever people can jury-rig. A phenomenon know as a gas-out, when the atmosphere changes rapidly or previously abandoned rooms are unsealed, is well known to the denizens of Sedcograd
Size and Mass: 646,642,000,000 long tons full load, size also in flux as migrants and residents alike expand the walls of the station. It currently sits in a rough 5 km by 5 km by 5 km cube. It is really big
Axial Tilt, Orbital Distance, and Number Awkwardly twisted near 45 Degrees, located 414,000,000 km from its sun, 4th after 3 diminutive dwarf planets.
Geography and Climate: Again, in flux. The air channels are constantly collapsing, reopening, breaking, heating, cooling, melting, and freezing. There are no seasons on the Sedcograd, and weather is truly random
Culture and History: The Sedcograd was an experiment by the Rheim Imperium attempting to find out the limits of modular space-stations. It fell by the wayside as the war dragged on, but the technology in it did not, becoming standard for modular houses, stations, ships, etc. When a exploration party re-discovered the old wreck, they were amazed to find it in good working order, with a massive power supply and a huge air system, intended for the added modules. They relayed the news back, and soon enough thousands of people searching for riches came to the station, haphazardly attaching modules, engines, farms, and all manner of residencies. It wasn't long before the aged life-support system began to fail, only to be brought back to life by 'engineers'. Soon, it grew lawless as the maze of tunnels and tube become impossible to govern, prompting CyIntel to withdraw fully. Without anybody to enforce any building regulations, modules were no longer used as scrap metal was affixed to the outside and poorly sealed. It soon developed into a even-worse maze of pipes, hallways, and what have you, even the atmosphere becoming compromised and dangerous as the dying station is forced back to life again by its residents.

To be fair, Captain Harlock got pretty dark a number of times, and sequel versions to the original 1978 anime only got darker.

Name: “Is this you?” the black-clad man asked, sliding over a folder across the desk towards the mammalian in front of him. The mammalian picked up the folder, opening it, and looked inside. He only needed a few seconds. Then, he closed the folder again and slid it back. He nodded.

“Bilge-rat, a pleasure to meet you” the black-clad stranger continued. When the mammalian opposite him cringed at hearing those words, he corrected himself. “Or would you rather have I called you ‘Chicha’?”

Chicha nodded for a moment. “As you can imagine, sir, one would rather be called by his chosen name than his slave name”. The black-clad human nodded and opened up the folder again. “Right… Chicha, then…” he said as he took his pen through the file.
Age: “47 years of age…”
Gender: “Male-ish…”
Species: “Chapurian… They really should have put this near the top. I was looking for someone…”

“Taller?” Chicha finished his sentence, much to the annoyance of the human.

“More humanoid” he continued unabated. “Had I been told you were Chapurian, I would have found your nest days earlier”

“Racial profiling. You know how the Empire feels about that” Chicha remarked sarcastically. The human gave him a dirty look, but still went on. He was feeling far less at ease now, even though he knew he was armed and Chicha was not.
Nationality/Allegiance: “It says here you are a part of the Chapurian Diaspora. Is that information current?”
“That information is wrong. I serve the Chapurian Nation. Just because we lost our planet doesn’t mean we are not a nation. You humans are too focussed on territory. Ruined a lot of good maps, too”
The easy atmosphere that permeated the office at the entering of the human was slowly beginning to dissipate. The human looked over his shoulder towards the door, checking his route of escape should things go sour. Thus far, he had no perceived any weapons on the rodent sitting on the other side of the table, but that could change in a moment.
Physical appearance: “Don’t try anything funny, fur ball” the human remarked. “Just a yes or no would do”
Identifying Marks: Suddenly, a small black bird came flying into the room via one of the broken windows of the office. The bird perched itself atop Chicha’s head, looking intently at the human, before flying away again, chirping. Chicha snickered.

“What’s so funny?” the human asked, looking toward the broken window. The bird quickly shot out of sight in the narrow corridors of the dark Chapurian slums.

“Nothing” Chicha said. “Hiro has a very good taste in company”

Skills: “If we could get down to business. Mr. Chicha” the human continued, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He tactically used his elbow to check if his plasma pistol was still in place beneath his black coat. He started to feel the walls of the slums closing around him. A quick look around made him notice how many Chapurians were actually around here. He cursed himself for just walking into the nest, and wondered how he could have underestimated the rodents so much.

“You are well-known for your mechanical skills, Mr. Chicha. Even among your own kind, you are seen as talented. With all the ships coming here, I bet you have a lot of experience with different models, am I right?”

Chicha just nodded, and did not give a vocal confirmation.

“We have been backtracking your records, Mr. Chicha. Sandurian microwave engines, Hoovtest cooling circuits… There are quite a few companies that would pay good money for your knowledge about ship layouts.”

“Right” Chicha answered, unimpressed. “Does it say anything about biology in there?”

The human stared at the rodent for a few seconds, then flipped through the long pages of the file.

“No, nothing here” he said, not sure why the Chapurian would ask for that. Chicha just shook his head, and sighed. “Just keep going, will you. I have other grease-filled fuel rods I have to attend to.”
Personality: “You’re not the most friendly person, are you?” the human remarked jokingly. He laughed, but the laugh soon petered out when he saw the angry eyes of Chicha staring into his soul.

“When you had your planet taken and your people forced into decade-long slavery, you can tell me all about friendliness to strangers. Strangers who didn’t lift a finger in your defence. I am a very friendly person, but to my kind. The people who have suffered like I have. There is no point in friendship with people who cannot even begin to comprehend the hardship of this universe.”

The human pushed his chair back a bit, swallowed, and then nodded. Again, he used his elbow to check for his sidearm. HQ had not told him everything, it seemed. There was little to none about Chicha’s history in his file. For a moment, he assessed if this was a lost cause, if he needed to get himself out of there. He quickly established that he would not get far if he left in a hurry. Instead, he held his ground.
Weaknesses: “That’s not an easy life, is it? When you can only have relations with a minority of people?”

“Why do you think we live in slums? We weren’t put here, if you think that. We choose to live in isolation. Away from the prying eyes of humans who failed to come to our aid. Damn them. Away from reptilian scum, too. I have nothing good to say about an empire that relegates us to the status of mere cattle. Do you understand?”

The human nodded. For a moment, there was an uneasy silence. Chicha sat back in his chair, wheezing a bit because of the strain he put on himself. He wasn’t the youngest of his kind anymore, he slowly started to notice that. For a moment, the human felt bad for him. He began to look around the little office of his host.
Likes/dislikes: There was a lot to unpack, if one looked. The first thing that one noticed in the somewhat chaotic office was the holographic image of a planet, taking the place where there would normally have been a lamp hanging from the ceiling. It didn’t seem to turn, but it could also have a realistic turning speed. One wall was entirely devoted to a long bookcase, filled to the brim with all kinds of books. There were a lot of books about biology, but also books on history, and some novels. The vast majority were books on engineering and mechanics, though, from engines to cooling systems. Books of blueprints, technical manuals, all kinds of records. In the far corner, he could spot an old gramophone with a stack of LP’s next to it, mostly consisting of old jazz music from long-forgotten artists.

“I’m sorry” Chicha suddenly said. He was looking up at the planet hologram wheeling overhead. The human couldn’t see properly, but he could swear Chicha’s eyes were wetter.

“You are not to fault for your government. You just do your job. I know I did mine, back in the day. I just have no love for your empire. Any empire that allows the Cipaqoaltus to ravage the galaxy is evil, in my eyes. Not as evil as the Cipaqoaltus, but at least complicit in their crimes. Any empire that allows slavery to exist is evil. You are not to fault, but your empire is. Let is continue”

“Alright” the human answered softly.
Fears: “Your file checks out, Mr. Chicha. This brings me to my purpose here” the human said. From his pocket he procured a folded piece of paper, which he unfolded slowly. Above it, in giant letters, was the text ‘EMPLOYMENY CONTRACT’. Chicha’s eyes shot between the contract and the human handing it over, but didn’t dare to touch it.

“Are you fucking kidding me, pinko?” Chicha said, using the racial slur often used for humans among his kind. “I just told you: I hate that Empire to the core. I would not lift a finger in their aid in a thousand years. Goodbye”

“I think you misunderstand” the human said, a slight smirk appearing across his face. He leaned back in his chair, rudely placing his feet on the desk. He was holding all the cards now, they both felt it.

“It really isn’t an offer. If you don’t accept, we will send a message with your location forward to the Federation. I am sure they would be thankful to us for leading them to one of their public enemies. Those reptiles are not above some bloody vengeance, I should think. Perhaps it could even rid us of this hideous eye-sore here. Kill two birds with one stone, to use a politically incorrect phrase”

Suddenly, all the cards were on the table. Indeed, Chicha had little choice. If the Federation learned about the existence of a Chapurian slum on Thrawn B7, and they learned that Chicha was there… The results would be catastrophic. All his dreams dashed in an instance. He looked at the paper again. The human was now holding a pen in front of his face, which he took hesitantly. He gave one last angry look towards the black-clad operative, but then quickly signed the document.

“Good to have you on board, Mr. Chicha” the human said. He tapped the brim of his hat, stood up, and left the office, almost running through the dark corridors of the slums. As the human left, the bird Hiro flew back in through a broken window, perching itself on the chair where the human had just sat in.

“You were right, Hiro…” Chicha said, taking a bag of seeds from one of the drawers of his desk.

Bio: As he began to feed his avian companion, Chicha began to ponder. Again, he looked up at the planetary hologram above his head. It was a weather report from one of the last days of Chapur, before it was conquered by the Federation. In his part of the planet it was a hot summer’s day. All the windows had been open, he could hear the birds cheeping outside. The trees in the university garden bore big, green fruits, which the students would try to pluck when ripe. An easy breeze gave some comfort from the summer heat, which was why the air condition was switched off. The hologram looked lush and green, just as it had been on that day. The sprinkler systems were off, otherwise the burning suns would scorch the grass. Chicha had been measuring the growth of a few genetically engineered plants just before leaving. 21 cm, 30 cm, 24 cm… He could still recall the exact measurements.

There had been no warning. In the early morning of the next day, the Federation descended on their planet. Chapur had been a part of the intergalactic community for a few decades, but always as a low-tech place. It wasn’t on any major trade routes, it wasn’t in a vital location, nor did it have an over-abundance in resources. It just chugged along, entertaining some visitors from among the stars but generally remaining isolated and a bit backward. So, when the Federation descended, there was no preparation. Nuclear installations were destroyed in seconds, as were most of the major cities. Whole nations burned, especially in the north, which was uninhabitable to reptilians anyway. It was a genocide in a day. Billions of Chapurians were slaughtered in a single rotation of the planet, billions snuffed out like that.

This was not the fate of Chicha, however. Apparently, unbeknownst to him, the biology faculty had been researching anti-reptilian biological weapons. Viruses and bacteria that could wipe out entire species of reptilians in a matter of years. The research wasn’t nearly done, and early signs indicated that it was impossible to accurately manufacture. However, the Federation did not take that into account. They enslaved the remaining populace of the planet, mere tens of thousands, to work aboard their ships. The Chapurians, being quite small creatures, could easily work in the cramped and frigid conditions where reptilians couldn’t go. The work was dangerous and hard, and many more of his kind died in the bellies of reptilian warships.

That was the state of the Chapurian diaspora. Colonies, nests, scattered around the galaxy in ships with no hope of communication, except with some stolen radios. Families had been ripped apart during the abduction, so they were keen to keep contact. Still, with so many ships, so many little pockets, loved ones always lost one another. Over time, contact petered out, and Chapurians were relegated to subservience. At first, the reptilians hid their slave cargo, but over time, they became bolder. They would sometimes even sell their Chapurian slaves to other ships, as the small creatures were quite valuable on any ship. Cultural misunderstandings meant that many believed the Chapurians were not even sentient, that they were just following instincts. Not many of their race spoke the common tongues of the universe, and those who did were kept locked away by the reptilians.

By a stroke of luck, Chicha managed to get free. The ship of his captors was heavily damaged during a battle, many of the crew killed or wounded. The Chipurians managed to get free due to battle damage and overran the ship’s defences. They killed much of the remaining crew, and forced the wounded to learn them how to pilot the ship. After learning how to do that, the Chapurians killed the remaining wounded and steered the ship on a course to Thrawn 7B. It was one of the closest systems, and its reputation was well-known. Once there, the Chipurians sold the ship for scrap and started their own colony just outside one of the space ports, forming their own little community. Still, they faced discrimination from misunderstanding space travellers, who had only seen them as slaves. The community has been collecting money, buying whatever Chapurians they can from the hold of passing ships, whenever possible. The colony has been growing, and some voices have been raised in favour of searching a new planet. Lacking any kind of greater funding, however, have made these dreams sound hollow.

Name: Kaguya no Kusakabe
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Nationality/Allegiance: To the fallen state of Eientei, which is embodied by its ruler - namely, herself.
Physical appearance: See right
Identifying Marks: There is a large antigrav bier and personal shield system connected to the cybernetics on her back. Touching the ground is, quite literally, beneath her.

Skills: Her greatest strength is her ability to understand the minds of others. The only reason her rule lasted as long as it did was her ability to fend off both a military coup and foreign regime change by balancing the fears of each faction against the desires of the other. In terms of this job, her ship would probably be a great asset, if she was willing to actually risk it in combat.
Personality: In a word, disingenuous. She is a careful manipulator capable of presenting almost any personality, but her deep-seated superiority complex and harsh nature will always force their way through.
Weaknesses: Despite once being a ruler, she was not a particularly good one. Nor is she a good pilot - in fact, she leaves most of the flying to the onboard AI, especially during combat. Her unique upbringing has also left her rather...out of touch with the common man.
Likes/dislikes: She truly believes that she deserves to rule, so she enjoys anything that reinforces this notion. Correspondingly, she dislikes anything "unrefined" that would put her at the level of a common peasant.
Interests:(Optional)
Fears: Loss of status, bodily harm, and some mild xenophobia, in decreasing order of intensity.

Bio: Eientei was a tiny, relatively unimportant nation founded back when the Rheim still ruled the galaxy. It was carved out of uncontested space with the wealth of an ancient aristocratic family caught by delusions of grandeur, and at its height it never numbered more than a dozen worlds. When Rheim fell and the kingdoms of Man shattered, Eientei drifted off into obscurity, like so many other bastions of civilization engulfed by that great demon called Distance. Only its rich natural resources and self-sufficiency sustained it through the long twilight years until the rise of the Cyanian Empire, whereupon they became the leverage upon which Eientei's independence rested - though it was hardly a peaceful rest.

Ever since they encountered the Cyanian Empire, the people of Eientei have been a people under siege. A military invasion, though it would have been quick and decisive, would have destroyed Eientei's delicate gas giant harvesting facilities and was thus ruled out. Instead, this siege was fought in countless meeting rooms and conference calls by thousands of nameless diplomats and covert agents. This 'shadow war' permeated every aspect of Kaguya's life. She was confined to the palace for fear of assassination and forbidden from socializing on her own for fear of Cyanian manipulation. Her harsh and aloof attitude was a necessity of life; either one rose above the chaos or they were consumed by it. Her grandfather was already old when he greeted the first Cyanian diplomats, though she suspected age had little to do with his sudden death. Her father spent his entire life battling Cyanian-backed dissident groups and staving off economic ruin, and it seemed her brother would too. For all its flaws, however, the Cyanian Empire is undeniably good at imperializing, and its ever intensifying efforts culminated in a subdermal proton bomb triggered during a routine military inspection. In one blow, her father was put into a coma and her brother was crippled. With no one else available, Kaguya was crowned Princess Regent for the forseeable future.

For four long years she maintained her throne, banking on first her popular image to stave off a coup, then the threat of a radical, isolationist coup to stave off foreign regime change, and finally the threat of foreign regime change to stave off rebellion and maintain popular support. In the end, she was undone by chance - the promotion of a more aggressive Cyanian sector admiral finally upset the delicate balance. Eientei was unceremoniously crushed in one the the Cyanian Empire's many wars of expansion, and Princess-Regent Kaguya no Kusakabe, faced with a show trial and summary execution, did the prudent thing and fled Cyanian space in a prototype corvette.

Now, only several months later, dwindling fuel stocks and a need for supplies have driven her to Thrawn B7, where an Empire vessel waits with an interesting proposition...
Reason for Being on Thrawn B7: For an individual accused (and convicted, but she maintains that convictions in absentia don't count) of crimes against humanity in general and the Cyanian Empire in particular, nearly any refuge will do. Thrawn B7 just happened to be in her way.

CAPTAIN TO ENTERPRISE (DO NOT REMOVE)

Yes, I know this thing is massive but for chrissakes it's outgunned by fighters
Name: EMS Last Sanctuary of an Imperial Destiny
Make and model: A prototype corvette developed under Project SHINOBI, intended to serve as the imperial transport in war zones and other areas of dangerous space.
Appearance: See above, except it's painted red instead of blue
Length, Width, Height: Prow to Stern: 90m | Port to Starboard: 65m | Ventral(?) to Dorsal(?): 26m (four decks total, but the topmost/bottommost only exist in the back half. All measurements are between the two points furthest away from the axis of their respective dimensions.)
Weapons and Shielding: The Last Sanctuary mounts six 80mm coilguns evenly distributed along its hull, each loaded with a mixture of HE fragmentation charges and focused fusion rounds. Though these are capable of dueling fighters and lightly armored scout ships, they are wholly insufficient for combating a military vessel of similar size. Together with a dozen point defense laser projectors, they form the ship's secondary armament. Holofields designed to confuse enemy sensors, a complex sectoral shield system, and heavy armor typically found on full-sized frigates hint at the Last Sanctuaries' role as an imperial transport designed to escape fights, not win them.
Propulsion: Three oversized sublight engines and a wealth of maneuvering thrusters give the Last Sanctuary stunningly high forward acceleration and strafing capabilities, though its ability to to reverse direction and make large turns is merely above average.
Cargo capacity: 20,000m3, although roughly 95% of this is dedicated to the storage and maintenance of the ship's primary weapon system.
Seats:10 - there used to be a lot more, before the ship underwent its modifications. This is basically what's left between the bridge and the officer's quarters. The Imperial Suite is, of course, totally off-limits for passengers. (Any passengers will get some pretty nice rooms, however)
Special Features:
An autocannon model
Image
Rather than rely on a traditional gun battery, the Last Sanctuary is equipped with several hundred semi-autonomous drones. Approximately 15m3 in size, each is armed either with two 30mm autocannons firing conventional fragmentation rounds or four dual-stage missiles meant to pierce through the heaviest armor by means of an explosively-accelerated sabot, itself loaded with a devastating antimatter charge. Unfortunately, these, like most of the ship, never left the prototype stage. Although they are extremely effective on a direct hit, a significant angle of impact will deflect the sabot, while the complicated dual-stage system leaves little room for conventional propellant. As a consequence, the low range of the missiles and the slow projectile velocities of the autocannons render the drones ineffective at anything other than the closest of ranges.

Due to a last-minute refit, the Last Sanctuary is equipped with fully self-sufficient maintenance facilities capable of repairing damaged drones and assembling more, given the proper parts, although her lack of skill and the limitations of the onboard AI limit the ship to deploying a few dozen at a time while in combat.
