Biography:
Raised in a small town with nothing to do and no opportunity for financial success. Kent had no choice to work hard to get himself out of a bad situation and a dead end town. How he did that? The only way possible. Through football.
Tomball had always been good at conference play but struggled against unfamiliar opponents. As a freshman Kent saw an opportunity to become eventually become a leader on the team, but for now he just worked hard and eventually earned that role. Eventually becoming the star player and team leader in his junior and senior season where with Graves leadership and high level of talent took the Tomball Cougars to the state championship game in back to back years. Winning it all in his final year in school. Gathering attention from major college programs around the country Grave’s life was looking up. He finally got of the dead end town and on national signing day, he announced he would be attending the University of Texas after taking a gap year to travel overseas and take an internship at a German manufacturing company where he fell in love with mechanical engineering . All things pointed to success as Graves was being heavily recruited by potential NFL teams and was said to be as high as a 1st round prospect. Something then changed his life forever.
It was the beginning of his senior year. September 11th, 2001 as he sat down for class. The teacher got a call. Her face went white and her voice got shaky as she said ok. The class at a dead silence. The frail old women announced to the class that the World Trade Center in New York City had been flown into and the United States was under attack by Islamist terrorist. Graves being a proud American and fierce patriot, that day went up and signed up for the military. He had been fighting for his country for several in an active duty role until one day during a field exercise Graves experienced massive sharp pains in his chest and ribs. Usually one to ignore pain and suck it up, he was caught coughing blood by a higher ranking officer and told to report to the medical facility on base. There the doctor expressed massive concern causing Graves then to undergo a ct scan which revealed a mass on the left lung.
This lead to an honorable discharge while Graves underwent medical treatment. While undergoing treatment made friends with a spunky younger girl who invoked new hope and excitement into Grave’s otherwise grim life. On a whim they decided to live everyday in paradise and moved to the coastal city of Daytona Beach.
One day while receiving one of his last rounds of chemotherapy Graves was leaving the hospital when he happened to recognize a familiar face which happened to be Carl Taylor. He recognized the man from when a few players from CDA took a recruiting trip to his alma mater ,University of Texas , and Graves was their tour guide for part of the day. After talking to Coach Taylor about what had happened to him, Taylor offered a volunteer opportunity to work with the defense at the local Coastal Daytona Academy. At first Graves gave a hesitant no, but took Carl’s number anyway. After talking with his girlfriend about what had happened she decided to take him to one practice without his knowledge and then forced him to watch from the stands. He left angrily and his girlfriend never brought it back up. Though the next couple practices Graves made his return. Just keeping a low profile and leaving when he knew he had been spotted. One practice it was Coach Taylor who had seen him. Called him down on the field and introduced him to the team. Then told Graves to give coaching a shot, and he did. He found new hope and passion for life. He took on the volunteer opportunity which eventually led to him becoming the school’s defensive coordinator after proving himself to Taylor and allowing him to have confidence enough to step back when it came to the defensive side of things and focus on more on game management
