Biography:
If you go to the 1200 on block of 17th Street Birmingham, Alabama you will find a quaint white home with green trim around the windows. You would look at the house. Perhaps thinking it was cute. Though the story of what laid inside is a story of racial discrimination with many events that might turn you away. Addiction. Abuse. Abandonment. Inside, the second bedroom down the hall on the right, lays a giant. That giant never had his father at home. His mom, though a sweet caring lady, was caught up in the business of his father, thus causing her to be sent to prison. She was a glutton for punishment. She herself, did nothing wrong, besides fall hopelessly in love with a bad man. Marcus’ father was a thug, a crook, drug dealer, thief. All words you can think of. Probably fit. Marcus’ mother knew he was those things, but she wanted to “fix” him. Thinking one day he would change. He didn’t. Now taking care of the giant is little old sweet Louise Miller.
When his parents would fight. His grandmother was there to fill his stomach with food, and his heart with love. With no shortage of love from his grandmother. It seemed Marcus was going to turn out alright. For awhile this was the case. He grew quickly and found a love for the game of football. Everything was ok until he hit around the age of 10. His father came back and had nowhere to live so he found his way into the basement, where he got started with his old ways. To gain the trust of his young impressionable son Marcus’ father would bring home gifts regularly, bought with what would later to be discovered as drug money, for Louise and Marcus. He disguised his earnings as good investments and an honest working man’s wages. Which some of which were true. It fooled everyone, Marcus’ father did seem to be rehabilitated. One weekend Louise was sent away on a riverboat casino trip while Marcus and his father bonded. They went to the pool. Got ice cream. Everything seemed to be fine. Then later that night as they watched cartoons. His father told him of a treasure chest filled with money if he ever had to go away again. An hour later. A knock on the door. How harmless. As Marcus’ father went to open the door. It was kicked down. A group of swat men flooded into the house. Yelling and giving orders. Marcus just hit the floor and did as the members of the swat team told him to. As his father was dragged he told Marcus. “I love you son, Daddy will fix this. I love you” His grandmother Louise picked him at the police station a few hours later. She swore his father off and told Marcus he better not get involved in that life. He kept the treasure chest location safe for months
One day he overheard his Grandmother talking to his Great Aunt Alma about money problems and he then told them about the treasure chest his dad had told him about. Alma and Louise having no other plan for the cash decided to entertain this idea but primarily thought of it as a way to keep Marcus entertained. Much to their surprise. About 30 minutes of digging later they did find an old wooden military ammo box. Inside was jewelry, and stacks of cash. They were overjoyed to say the least. Marcus would be taken care of all the way up to college.
A few years down the road Miller was headed down the path of his father. He was staying out late, skipping school, drinking, doing drugs. His grandmother never knew of most of this but when she did find out. She tried to coddle him into changing. Knowing of his history she didn’t want to push him away. He and her were best friends and her “little” Marcus would always be little to her. When he was expelled from school Louise knew she had to do something. She tried Scared Straight programs and other things. She then as a last ditch effort used part of the money to send him to a boarding school in Florida. Will this help him? We will find out...
