Tales of Astalia

A Fire-Emblem Inspired RP

World Building || OOC

Background Lore

The continent of Astalia; a large spraling landform with a variety of beautiful features ranging from soft or rocky beaches, to might mountains, with soft rolling plains and hills thrown in between. Many generations ago it had been ruled over by three separate kingdoms each nearly as powerful as their neighbors, until The Grand Struggle, as it is known by most on the continent. It was at this time the three main Kingdoms; The Acraine Empire, Kingdom of Hasno, and The Prijam Kingdom, began to do war with one another for a great many reasons. Thousands from the main kingdoms and some of their vassals, died in this great conflict. It only grew worse through the use of Dragons, whom came from unknown origins, became weapons of terror on the battlefield, particularly by the Acraine Empire, who used them heavily in battle. Though, there came a point where even the Acraine were unable to control such power, and the Dragons began to wage war against the weakened humans, almost as if it were their goal before. Pushed back to the edges of their homes, the humans of all three kingdoms managed to push away their seemingly petty squabbles and face off the Dragons, only through shear luck, a strong will, and a bit of help from some holy weapons, were the Dragons finally pushed back.

Now, humanity has spent the last few hundred years rebuilding from this time. The old nations have fallen into many new and aspiring kingdoms both small and large in size and power. The signs of The Grand Struggle, have been reduced to little more than legends of mighty heroes and the few ruins of once mighty castles and bastions that lie around the countryside. Humanity has moved on with its life, and for the time peace had rung true throughout the continent, most nations too concerned with rebuilding and their own interests to set their sights upon their neighbors. Though in the past few years times have changed. From the ruins of Acraine Empire in the south a new power, in the form of the Friala Confederation, headed by the Pluenian Empire, has risen. Preached as a protective union of the Southern States, they have openly annexed many of their neighbors, and turning those who submit into Vassals with limited autonomy. Such actions have put them at odds with the Kingdom of Astya to the North, and others, who look to form their own leagues in anticipation for what maybe another Grand Struggle. But for the time being the world hangs in a delicate balance, and all it takes is the wrong or right moment.

RP Summary

Hello! And welcome to Tales of Astalia. Now, right off the bat, let me clear one thing up; you may have noticed the little "Fire-Emblem Inspired" at the top of OP. If you've never played the games, or don't even know what they are, don't worry. The Games, their mechanics, events, characters, etc. will have no control or connection to the RP whatsoever. We are simply borrowing the rough setting and time period, along with some other "set pieces" in order to give the RP a bit of a kick start, so not everything is from scratch. Thus if you've never played the games, you won't be at a disadvantage or missing out on anything in the RP. All in all, this is a light to mild fantasy RP.

With that out of the way, we can get down to business. This RP will be all about you and your characters. Your party to to speak, and their journey around the Continent and its various Kingdoms. These characters can be from any of the nations, whether you create it or someone else does. They can be from any walk of life; Nobles to Mercenaries, Knights to Footmen, Grand Wizards to Apprentices. It's all up to you. There will an overarching story, as you can tell from the Background Lore, but in the beginning you will likely be separate and embarking on your own journeys, that will eventually be tied together.

Where you come in; while a story and premise are all good, this world is lacking one thing: lore. In this thread you will be able, or rather in charge, of filling the Continent of Astalia with all manner of nations. The size, culture, etc. are up to you, within reason of course. All nations should be human lead and populated, mostly[unless this is checked over with me], and this is a Medieval setting. A nation of all mages? Sure. A nomadic people? We already have one but feel free to add a tribe. A normal kingdom? More than welcome. With your help we'll be able to get this world breathing, and then we can move onto the fun of actually creating its stories with our characters.

1. OP and Co-ops words are law. That is unless I, the OP, overrule something
2. Be nice and polite. There's no such thing as a bad idea, well that might not be right, but we're here to have fun, not fight
3. Standard NS stuff that you all know
Side Note: If interested in being a Co-op, just TG me to let me know

Some Basic Clarifications:
- Any Horse of Creature mounted class can of course dismount to fight and do other tasks

- Class Weapons only denote weapons a character is proficient in and should use

- Skills don't refer to anything you'll see on the wiki. Moreover they simply mean things like Cavaliers are good at riding horses, Knights are more durable, etc.

- Class names do not equal titles. You can have a Prince be a "Hero" class, or a "General" Class carry the title Sir/Knight

- Magic Triangle:
Dark --> Anima --> Light --> Dark | Anima have no advantages over other Anima

- Magic is solely cast through the use of Tomes, which are similar to "Grimoires"

- Magic ability is technically non-hereditary, and seemingly random in appearence within an indivisual | IE: You're parents don't have to be Mages for you to be one, but a mage with mage parents is naturally stronger

- Weaknesses:
Armored Classes are weaker to Magic [except Paladins] | All classes are weak to their repsective "Slayer" weapons

- Stats of a class have no effect over a character

Nation Name: The Grand Pluenian Empire
Shortened Name: The Pluenian Empire
Informal Name: Pluena
Type of Government: Monarchy
Head of Government: Emperor Ehnfrid Alvar III
Flag: In all its glory
Coat of Arms:
Capital: Oclane
Territory: See map
Population: 27,409
Military Size: 1,350
History:
The Landscape
The landscape of Pluena is quite simple and relatively the same no matter where in the nation you will go, with some slight variations towards the edges. The core of the Kingdom, where the capital is located, is positioned more towards the south and is formed out of hillier areas with flat mesas laying between these slightly larger knolls of earth and dirt. It's in these areas that you will find the majority of Pluena cities, though it is still possible to find some scattered among the various hills and mountains, though they are not the safest due to rock slides that are prominent in that area. As you go farther away from the core of the Empire, and enter into many of the occupied territories it become much more of flat land, opening up into rolling fields of farms and more open fields. It is here a majority of the Empires food is produced, and remains this way for most of the countryside extending further out into the surrounding duchies and kingdoms laying around the Empire.

The People
The people of The Pluenian Empire, also known as Pluenians are an active bunch in the inner and core provinces of the Empire. They enjoy the boost to the quality of life that has come with the Empires new growth and power over the last few decades. Due to the location of the Empire, they are a strong people having spent many years living on limited rations due to the climate and land terrain of the area in which the core of the Empire had been located. Though such worries have disappeared with the inclusion of new farming locations, the Pluenians have grown in another way, particularly in their military conquests and acquisitions which have given many members of their militaries the training and experience found in few other places in Astalia. They are a proud people, many of whom having forgotten their dark past under the Acraine Empire, and look forward to a new age of greatness not only for themselves, but for all people of Astalia. Those under their influence of course.

The History
The Grand Pluenian Empire is one of the older nations on the continent. Making up the area that was at one time the core of their predecessor the Acraine Empire, there are still plenty of signs left over from this time. The nation itself was founded, officially about a hundred years or so after the end of the Grand Struggle by a Prince from a Dutchie that was once under the domain of the Acraine Empire, the royal family having been slaughtered by the Dragons or later the liberators of the nation following the ending years of the Grand Struggle. The Empire was at first quite weak, having little land that was viable for farming, and relying on the importance of their more fertile neighbors in order to stay alive and function. In exchange many of their citizens became workers for other nations, building the Empire a reputation for being friendly and hardworking. It was one it keep for sometime, as the situation in the southern part of Astalia under the former Acraine Empire, was relatively static. That was until the introduction of Emperor Alvar the First to the throne. He quickly began a campaign of coaxing his neighboring partners, those that had ample food, into a confederation of sorts. Some members simply joined out of friendliness for the Pluenians, but such delusions ended as they quickly turned into Vassal states rather than separate states. With rumors of this spreading, and more powerful neighbors refusing to join, the Empire took matters into their own hands, under the Second King, and began a massive war of aggression. Now the Grand Empire sits in relative peace, seemingly biding its time to move on its more powerful neighbors to the North and East.

Additional Information: Most states in the Southern Areas of the continent are vassals to the Grand Empire of Pluena, lending their troops to form up their ranks as militia, but in some cases loyal Vassals have even ended up as Generals in the Grand Imperial Army of Pluena, where they often bump shoulders with their more native partners. Those nations still independent from the Grand Empire, likely won't stay that way for long.

Taggle!
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.
But seriously, aside from the population and GDP, just assume that my NS stats are roughly accurate.

Support: Paleo-imperialism, conservatism, libertarianism, Christianity.
Against: Stupid people, resistance to industrial progress, alt-right, any form of government at or beyond socialism.

Nice to see some interest in the thread. Will get an app up for Astya soon, and begin the work on the additional apps.

Side Note: Did a quick update to the "Nation App." Nothing major, just an extra guideline. It shouldn't mess up anyone currently working on an app, hopefully

Nation Name: The Unified Kingdom of Astya
Shortened Name: The Kingdom of Astya
Informal Name: The Unified Kingdom
Type of Government: Monarchy
Head of Government: King Alaro T. Kuhn I
Flag: NS Flag will do
Coat of Arms:
Capital: Gesno
Territory: See map
Population: 25,467
Military Size: 1,278
History:
- Older History -

The Unified Kingdom of Astya lies in the North Western corners of the contient Astalia, surrounded by large forrests and soft rolling hills throughout most of it's territory, punacted by a few larger mountains towards the Eastern edges of the border, effectively cutting certain parts of the country off from the main areas, and laid with various mountain tribes. The Kingdom itself as the name implies was the result of a union of four seperate kingdoms under a single banner as representated by the four ciricles on the flag, indicating four, somewhat seperate, but ultimately united kingdoms laying in the North. The union came about only a hundred years or so after the end og the Grand Struggle, making it one of the older nations in the post struggle world, along side the Pluenian Empire. The unification came about as a way for the four semi powerful kingdoms to unite as a large super power in the north for the benefit of the all their peoples. Though rough at first, due to the somewhat cynical nature of kingdoms in the days following the Grand Struggle, the kingdom finally began to assimilate from four territories into a single united body both culturally and politically, no residing under a single king.

- Recent History -

In recent years, the Unified Kingdom ultimately hasn't changed all that much, unlike some of their neighbors that have grown larger or smaller, as in the case of the Pluenian Empire and their confederation laying to the south. The Unified Kingdom, has for the most part, remained a benevolent power in the North, and has done little to bother its neighbors, instead seemingly liking staying relatively devoid of becoming involved in the affairs of the other nations that surround them. Yet, due to their stance as one of the more powerful Kingdoms in the north, they have had many visitors from other kingdoms, and have built up strong relations with some, though others were less than friendly. A nation to the West, seemingly unknown to the Astyai, called Zendle began to engage the Kingdom in a series of undecided wars ranging in length and intensity. The friendly relations, however, were something that could become very important to the Kingdom in the near future. Espically with the growing threat of the Friala Confederation looming ever closer to the lands of the Astya and her friends. As such, measures have been taken to further strenghten the bonds between the Unified Kingdom and her neihgbors to better prepare themselves for the day the Confederation reaches the edges of the lands. A day that seems to be growing closer every day.
Additional Information:
  • The Kingdom of Zendle - The Unified Kingdom and Kingdom of Zendle have fought a series of wars over the past few decades reaching the total of three. Such wars were mostly fought over glory and pride rather than land, with the Zendle acting as the agressors in all three conflicts. Such wars took place both on the seas, as well as the Plains and smaller nations that surrounded the two power houses of their respective domains.
Due to the nature of wars, relations between the two have soiled, though a vast majority of Astyai Warriors hold them in high regard as well trained and powerful fighters, though some share a bitterness towards the nation for its unprovocked acts of agreesion for seemingly no greater purpose than glory
  • Aftermath of the Zendle Wars - Though a tie in many respects, the nations largely equal in most terms, the wars have had vast after effects on both nations and their relations with their nieghbors. The people of Plains and those caught between the two warring nations have grown to distrust and in some case resent both for the destruction their wars caused, despite Zendle being the agressor. The wars have also bred several generations of well versed and trained soldiers that have added to the inner strength of the Astyai Grand Army, and given them experience to better prepare for conflict with Pluena to their south
  • The Stahlwände Korp - Literally translating to "Steel Wall Corp" is a style of foot soldier coming into service following the end of the First Zendle War and the beginning of the Second Zendle War. These were the strongest of the Astyai Army, donned in the mightest of Plate Armor, with Zweilhander Swords and mighty Lances to compliment them [Generals]. Due to the more defensive nature of the Unified Kingdom in all three wars, many of the military advances went to stronger and more defense oriented units, such as the Horsemounted version of the Stahlwände, wearing ligher but nearly equally as strong armor and armed with Lances and heavier Polearms [Axes], to disrupt and destroy the Zendle central flanks, while the Unified Kingdom's own Heavy [Paladin] and light [Cavalier] Cavalry would focus on destroying the flanks. Stahlwände units of course acting as reverse shock troopers, designed to hold the lines against all odds.

I'll probably end up releasing an app for that with the character one, which will probably come sometime this week, whether I like it or not. But you're free to throw around ideas in here, and I welcome it, until that time arrives.

Though I will put out a quick little PSA about "Races." I believe I already mentioned it somewhere in the OP, but this is a little on the milder side of Fantasy, and the world is mostly human, so any races will most likely end up in a small minority. But I'd still love to hear some of your ideas

Well this one is pretty much from the Mortal Instruments, it's a race called warlocks. They're the offspring of a demon and human and have some unusual feature like odd colored hair, eyes or skin to mark them as such. They're capable of casting magic (in this game they can be born with a higher proficiency of magic than most). So I really didn't make it up, but I just thought it was cool.

This one I did make up for a book I was writing. Drakes would be dragon-human hybrids, they would look pretty normal except for some dragon like features like eyes, patches of scales, horns, stuff like that.

Hmm...with a little tweaking the warlock idea could probably fit in nicely. Though it would be hard to fit them as a race, per se. A group of descendants, like a tribe, that just posses a lot of holy blood [aka close relations with dragons and stuff]. Their "ability" from this is that people that are part of this blood line have much higher magical abilities. What do you think?

Funnily enough there's already a similar race that exists in the universe [that I actually planned to use an example app for the races]. Except they're basically full dragons that take human form and can transform into full dragons with some magical stone thingies with a really uncreative name. But the idea of these half-humans are interesting. Though I'd like to hear a little more to get a feel for them

I like the tweaking you did with the warlocks, I have to figure out some more lore for the drakes.
Uru, Queen of Diamonds.
The Diamond card suit represents fire, strength and power. Sister of the Queen of Hearts, Queen of Spades and the Queen of Clubs.

Oh boy, I was planning on being a cavalier, but manaketes and other races would be quite fun as well!

Surprisingly that's what I basically had planned. A family of elite mages who are decedents of dragons sort of (idk how that would happen though lol) that, with the blood of dragons in their veins, have access to a unique fire magic limited to their bloodline. It would basically be blue fire that's a lot more powerful than ordinary fire magic

Nation Name: The Imperial Daskalarchy of Kovraiya
Shortened Name: IDK, make something up I guess
Informal Name: Kovraiya (or The Daskalarchy, either works)
Type of Government: Daskalarchy (a council of rulers, where each ruler trains a promising, non-related prospect from the masses to succeed him. First among these is the Emperor)
Head of Government: Voi Eyevrebrau
Flag: BEHOLD THE STANDARD OF THE VORROI
Coat of Arms: A triskelion inside a blue square which is the back of a beetle which covers the shield.
Capital: Vr'broiya
Territory: If I could be an island of the coast to the southeast of Pluena in this shape Image, that would be ideal. Otherwise,
this is the preference.
Population: 19,683
Military Size: 1,023
History: The Verai were a tall people, and they ate like kings. They failed to moderate their consumption and soon moved south to the marshes of Vyira, or so they called it. A small range of mountains lay to the northeast, but all else was boggy or grass-filled. Life was significantly harder, and the Verai splintered into thousands of factions, each struggling against each other and against the harsh forces of nature to maintain their lion's share. The most successful found ways to farm in the elevated foothills surrounding the mountains. Chiefs were never determined by strength, for strength was never needed to hunt what little there was. Rather, leaders were often determined by wit and wisdom, through games or other means. Few leaders passed into legend.

Centuries passed. Many that lingered in the marshlands tried to push into the fertile foothills, only to be repelled by the now-fortified highlanders. It came to pass that seven major factions arose. Of these, only the Vrau had access to or had mastered any sort of metallurgy. That said, their industries and guilds had capitalized to the fullest extent, discovering bronze, iron, and then steel for their armies. Their pragmatic, resourceful culture pushed them to grow their economy, to the envy of five of their six large neighbors. While the Breyro chose to ally themselves with the true power in the region, the others prepared, as best they could, for war. The Vrau, called the Vrau-yi (an insult at the time, meaning "tyrant") by their rivals (now formed into the Riyo-va Alliance), were far too busy reaping the benefits of trade with neighboring Acraine and later Pluena to establish an army. So when the envious Riyo-va Alliance gobbled up the Breyro tribe, the Vrau were helpless to stop them.

Helpless, but never tactless. Their merchants had many tactics for dealing with the large bandit tribes of the marsh, managing not only to keep them back but also to rout them on several occasions. The Vrau-yi took on their insult as their own and consulted these merchants on how to specialize their army and manufacture their weapons. Caravan mercenaries, and the Amazon war-mistresses of the now-defunct Breyro, and a new battalion of pikemen, and a noble chariot legion were all equipped and trained for war. So, when the Riyo-va Alliance met the Vrau-yi on the fields of Vr'broia, the "tyrants" drove them from the battlefield, never to face them again on the field of battle.

Now, the Vrau-yi were more competent than any to lead the Verai people, but even still the task was foreboding. Further, the "tyrant" king leading the war died, and the merchants didn't want this petty squabble to interrupt their profits any longer. Hence, it was settled that the seven major tribes (including the reinstated Breyro) would form a single faction modeled after the Vrau Daskalarchy, with the current leader as the head of state. This was the best scenario the Riyo-va could possibly desire, and so they readily joined this "Kovraiya" (meaning, "all peoples") government. The new government brought all tribes along the merchant routes to heel, and the standing armies grew their own traditions. What little riches Vyira had were brought to the new capital, placed upon the old battle site. Mathematics, economics, and the sciences were openly taught and practiced there. Kovraiya is still a young country, but it is growing at a rapid pace.
Additional Information: The Verai have a region-specific language, but merchants, diplomats, wanderers, and even some nobles often speak "Traveler's Tongue" (basic English) as a secondary language.
RP Example: The GATE RP. You know the one.

I hail from The League of Conservative Nations. Hearts unthawed, hearts unshaken!

Takaka Tar' Turayi,
The stars will be ours someday.
