Natalya grew up in relative poverty, not unlike many of the children in Belarussia SSR and spent a majority of her childhood days next to her mother, sewing. The collapse of the USSR came when Natalya was 16 and her family fled the dilapidated new republic of Belarus the following year in late 1992. They fled to the US, where they settled in the backstreets of New York City.
It was by mere chance that Natalya would meet her future husband in early 1993. The much younger Natalya ran into him on the street on one of her daily walks, as he was just exiting a business meeting. The struck up a conversation and agreed to meet later on. A few days later, the two met in a restaurant and a relationship began, one that would lead to marriage when Natalya was but 18. She moved back with John to Texas and quickly bore him many children. As she had aged, Natalya has never forgotten where she came from and who she is, something that is not popular with the residents of her community
