History - Iraq, the cradle of civilization, has been unstable ever since the US invasion in 2003. This culminated in the rise of ISIL in the mid-2010s. It took five long years, but Daesh was finally defeated in 2019. In the Islamic State’s defeat, a new nation emerged: the Kurdish state. Iraq, having none of this “secession” business, ordered a new offensive. The Zab Offensive ended in stalemate, and Iraqi Kurdistan remained de facto independent. Opting to cease offensive operations, Iraq set about rebuilding the territories seized by ISIS.
Sweeping military reforms were put in place, mostly standardizing the mess that had become of the Armed Forces, but also- controversially- standardizing the politically-charged Popular Mobilization Forces as a semi-regular militia, a la the American National Guard. Economic programs were incentivized to drive the economy away from the production of crude oil, even if the programs did tend to incentivize the development of a petroleum refinery industry.
Now, with the economy growing and the GDP per capita steadily climbing, politics chose to rear its head. The 2022 election of the centrist Victory Alliance marked a shift in the atmosphere of politics of the country. The ideals of the Western-style democracy and of conventional Iraqi culture are hotly debated. While not particularly important on a global scale, the last two years of this parliament have the potential to shape the young democracy of Iraq for decades to come.
