Major Foreign Issues - Recognition of Independence, Malaysian invasion
History [MUST LINE UP WITH HISTORY IN "STATUS" SECTION, NOT SET IN STONE AND MUST BE APPROVED BY OPs, WRITE IT LIKE IT'S GOING IN THE "STATUS" SECTION] Sarawak, despite being in a nation named “Malaysia”, finds itself a bastion of its unique culture against the peninsular Malaysians. Ever since the founding of the Kingdom of Sarawak by the White Rajahs, the region had an unifying identity, regardless of ethnicity or religion, the people were Sarawakian. Under the rule of the White Rajahs, Sarawak thrived as an abundant source of oil, rubber, and pepper, and the Sarawakians were supportive of his rule, but this couldn’t last. After the Japanese invasion, Sarawak was left in ruins, and the British would not pay to rebuild the nation until the White Rajah sold the nation to them. He reluctantly did so, and Sarawak became a Crown Colony of the British despite the natives desire to remain independent. Despite even the local Malays supporting an independent Sarawak or North Borneo, Sarawak was attached to the Federation of Malaysia. Initially, they were satisfied with autonomy, as promised by the historic 18-point agreement that lead to them joining Malaysia. But, this agreement wasn’t fully added to the constitution, and this has been as an excuse to strip Sarawak of its promised autonomy. The peninsular government has been taking full advantage of this excuse, and with a common feeling that this would become a slippery Sarawakians began to support further distancing the state from Malaysia. With this, a surprise candidate became head of the center-right Sarawak Parties Alliance, Chief Minister of Sarawak, a Christian Dayak named James Langkau. He vocally called out the federal government’s attempts to strip Sarawak of its autonomy, and stressed for Sarawakians to remember their shared heritage and unite as one to protect their rights. While he did not ever officially endorse independence, it was obvious he was supportive of the idea, and independence became a more and more popular idea across the state. These ideas further resonated into the minds of Sarawakians as the current head of the Brooke dynasty, Jason Brooke, who despite not claiming the throne anymore has worked to help preserve local Sarawakian culture, declared support for Sarawakian independence and stated that if the majority of Sarawakians approved of it, he would retake the throne in a constitutional monarchy. Tensions reached a boiling point after the Malaysian PM, in response to Langkau stating that “Sarawak belongs to the Sarawakians”, stated that “Sarawak belongs to the Malaysians, not your people” and publicly proposed stripping Sarawak of all autonomy. This would only enrage the people of Sarawak, and after the legislature officially signed an act of secession, Sarawak has declared itself an independent nation. The battalions of the Royal Ranger Regiment within Sarawak have mobilized in support of independence and been granted de facto control of the nation for the time being. Meanwhile, several paramilitary groups and militias have risen up for both sides, and the jungles have fallen to Sarawak due to the Iban declaring their support for independence. While popular especially among the Christian Dayaks, as it will free them from the Muslim majority, and Chinese due to their promises to make all races equal socially and economically, the Malays of Sarawak are divided. This is especially so in the cities, as Kuching and Miri are dealing with brutal block to block fighting as separatists and unionists duke it out.

History [MUST LINE UP WITH HISTORY IN "STATUS" SECTION, NOT SET IN STONE AND MUST BE APPROVED BY OPs, WRITE IT LIKE IT'S GOING IN THE "STATUS" SECTION - The disastrous exit from the European union in 2019 was one of the worst blows to the British economy since the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The Brexit agreement was a bi-partisan effort from both the Labour and conservative parties and once the British public realised the extent of damage that had been done to their nation both parties received a serious blow to their image in the eyes of the pubic, both this and the economic crisis has lead to a number of new and more radical parties to the forefront of British politics. The two most popular of these parties are the British Nationalist party who have managed to turn the anger and resentment of an economic crisis against Europe while on the other side of the spectrum is the British technocratic party who represent a new ideology in this era and vow to make the United Kingdom the centre of the world's technological advances once more. The current Prime minister is the immensely unpopular John Parsons who when he first ran for PM seemed like the saviour of the conservative party but his attempts to delay the Scottish referendum and his failed attempts to repair the economy have alienated him from the public. Now a snap election seems almost inevitable and the people will have to choose if Britain shall follow an enlightened path of technology and discovery or will it descend into authoritarianism and nationalism.

History [MUST LINE UP WITH HISTORY IN "STATUS" SECTION, NOT SET IN STONE AND MUST BE APPROVED BY OPs, WRITE IT LIKE IT'S GOING IN THE "STATUS" SECTION -
In 2014, the future Prime Minister of Japan would graduate alongside future leading Japanese and world politicians as well as members of the Imperial family from Kyoto University. Her name was Mizuno Oyanaka, a newly minted PhD holder with two separate degrees in engineering, and a bright future ahead of her. Headhunted by a military research group within the Japanese government, she would begin a career developing technology for the Japanese military. Eventually, she would begin work on her most favored brain child - the Yata no Kagami Airspace Defense System - once it entered her mind. Her future in politics, however, wasn’t as prominent until the year 2018.
A group of Japanese scientists, academics, and other intellectuals officially formed the Party for Technocratic Advancement as a political entity 4 years after Mizuno’s graduation from Kyoto University. The party is devoted to approaching things with a realpolitik point of view, encouraging change based on the merit of available options rather than moral or religious requirements or pull. If a definition is required, however, they appear to be centrist. Doctor Oyanaka was a founding member, but was sidelined in favor of older, male peers. Her loyalist faction, however, grows far faster than the components of the party that shoved her aside and the popular doctor grows in power, unsettling the senior politicians that had joined the Party for Technocratic Advancement who have no idea what to expect from the young woman or her party.
By 2019 Shinzo Abe’s unpopularity seems to be growing, and his relatively slow fall from the position of Prime Minister and head of the Liberal Democratic Party begins. This is because of under-the-table influence peddling that involved a deal with a corrupt, far-right school that supported the ultranationalist Nippon Kaigi. Taro Aso - a former Prime Minister and former supporter of Nippon Kaigi - would, however, take the fall, though Japanese society would slowly become aware of Shinzo Abe’s true dealings. Abe insulated himself with a powerful majority in the upper and lower houses of the Japanese parliament, but the people were beginning to rally against him.
In response to growing tensions, in 2020 Japan begins a build-up of the national defense forces that would continue over the course of 6 years. Recognizing that the USA could barely defend Taiwan from an air assault if an invasion were to take place, and in a theater where each major enemy of Japan’s possessed nuclear weaponry, the Japanese peoples begrudgingly accepted the additional safety provided by going ahead with already planned or in-development military projects, and expanding some aspects of the military. However, the expansion wasn’t a major one. It was simply a growth a bit higher than would be expected from Japan over the course of six years, and much of what was done seemed to have already been planned for the years 2018 through 2021.
Over the next three years, the path to a coalition between the historically unpopular Liberal Democratic Party and the new Party for Technocratic Advancement would be formed by the LDP’s loss of ground to other parties as the Japanese grew unhappy with undelivered promises. During these same three years, the PfTA would be one of these encroaching parties. To gain some additional control over the government, the PfTA would indeed form a coalition with the LDP, creating a sizeable enough majority in the House of Representatives to insure control for years to come, and stabilizing the flailing LDP.
The 2022 election for leader of the PfTA saw the highly charismatic, well-spoken, and sometimes eccentric Doctor Mizuno Oyanaka lead a coupe in the party with the support of those in the factions loyal to her, positioning herself as the leader of the PfTA for the foreseeable future. Shinzo Abe had dishonorably renegged on coalition agreements, almost leading to the dissolution of the coalition government, and a vote of no-confidence was held in 2024 thanks to Abe’s growing unpopularity within and without his party. The ‘rogue’ politician was ousted by a supermajority, and Mizuno Oyanaka took the chance to seize the senior partnership in the coalition for the PfTA as she was elected to the position of Prime Minister in a following snap election, promising to follow through on coalition agreements and reach coalition goals. Shortly afterwards, she held a snap election for the upper house of parliament, her party seizing control, and solidifying their position.
In 2023, the Yata no Kagami Airspace Defense System is launched to the protests of China, spurring the 2025 run for Prime Minister of a militarily conservative by the name of Morimasa Uesugi. However, his bid for Prime Minister fails after a sex abuse scandal regarding his underaged son leads to the candidate retiring from the political scene, leaving no opponents seen as legitimate to make a move against Oyanaka’s tenure, which has so far lasted a year. According to rumor, Morimasa is killed by an unknown member of the Yakuza after his son turned to them for assistance, paying them, and joining them.
A year later, Prime Minister Oyanaka promises to push for the amendment or abolishment of Article 9 of the constitution, and see it removed or modified before the selection of the next Prime Minister - which she does, indeed, hope is her. The resurgence of Japan’s military power on the international stage is viewed as inevitable by the nations of the world, though some are concerned by the fact that a push for a larger military force by a set of political factions within Japan has not slowed for in six years.

The international environment changed with the election of U.S. president George W. Bush in 2001. His administration rejected South Korea's Sunshine Policy and the Agreed Framework. The U.S. government treated North Korea as a rogue state, while North Korea redoubled its efforts to acquire nuclear weapons to avoid the fate of Iraq.
On 9 October 2006, North Korea announced it had conducted its first nuclear weapons test.
U.S. President Barack Obama adopted a policy of "strategic patience", resisting making deals with North Korea for the sake of defusing tension.Tensions with South Korea and the United States increased in 2010 with the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonanand North Korea's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island.
On 17 December 2011, the supreme leader of North Korea Kim Jong-il died from a heart attack. His youngest son Kim Jong-un was announced as his successor. In the face of international condemnation, North Korea continued to develop its nuclear arsenal, probably including a hydrogen bomband a missile capable of reaching the United States.
