Major Domestic Issues - Pollution and degradation, low birth rate, politically polarized society, over-regulation
Major Foreign Issues - Lingering tension with the DPRK, over-reliance on foreign protection, contention in the South China Sea

History - The influence of the United States has become a contentious issue in the Republic of Korea. Ever since the election of Dean Hampton and his refusal intervene in Estonia, many in the republic have wanted the country to turn its back on the US and the West. However, the election of Charles Stewart have given many previous doubters hope on the outlook of the future for the States, with President Choo even pledging her undying support of them and their newly-elected leader. Yet, millions of South Koreans still see their country as nothing more than an American puppet-state. With China’s agresson in the South China Sea threatening the South Korean economy as well as peace in the region, it leaves many scrambling to choose their allegiances before the next Presidential elections in December 2027: do they side with the Americans and the West who pledge to once again protect the seemingly ‘meek and defenseless’ countries of East Asia, or do they succumb to nationalistic pride, further driving a wedge between them and the West? It seems that everything may be on the line in an election that has been dubbed as the most important in Souh Korean history.

I’m judging by what it says on the statuses on page 1, where the Estonia incident severely impacted US relations with NATO and allies. Less than 1 year of a Charles Stewart administration won’t reverse all those effects yet :P Not to mention South Korea is very heavily reliant on US goods and would understandably want to become more self-sufficient if possible

It’s 2026. It’s been over a year.... nearly a year and a half. And we are in negotiations to reform NATO. I’m also hosting a meeting with South China Sea nations telling them I will defend them.

Last dated post in the IC says September 2025, and then there are two posts after that. 4 posts equal 1 month so technically I don’t think we’re even in October 2025 yet :P Unless the dates in the IC are off. As for the South China Sea dispute, I understand you said you will defend nations of interest, but the point of the history I included is to say that South Korea wants to start to become self-sufficient to a degree and not have to rely on major powers to cover for them

It’s 2026. Dates aren’t exact so posts can range from late 2025 to first half of 26. My latest post went up to Spring of 2026. And I understand being self sufficient but it sounded like you wanted to give the US the middle finger and not be allies.

I see what you mean. Mexico’s post is only in late 2025 because he had been working on it for awhile since before we rolled into 26. But IC wise we’ve reached first half of 2026.

Ohhh okay my mistake! I only checked the dates on the last page. But oh no we don’t want to be the US’s enemy, but we don’t want to have to rely on them entirely. The Democrats support the US fully, but the opposition Liberty Party will likely push hard against them, and it will all boil down to the December 2027 elections to determine the path South Korea will take! :D
