Which do you think is the better ship? Personally, I find information on the Federation class vague but it's the only one classified as a "dreadnought". I'm personally drawn to the Centaur and Sovereign classes.

Mew's the OP here, so I'll let him/her explain the setting in more depth, but basically, we're RPing in the 25th century using the Star Trek Online timeline, which features a more militarized Starfleet thanks to the Dominion War and all the events of STO.

Now, for a ship, it depends on what you want. The Sovereign and Intrepid classes are both good ships, but intended for different purposes.

Do you want a tough, fast ship that can beat the daylights out of something much large than it? A Defiant or Saber class represents this perfectly. The Saber is essentially the replacement of the Miranda/Centaur classes, so if you like that, it should be right up your alley.

Do you want a multipurpose scout/science ship that can fight? Intrepid class. The Voyager was of this class, and it survived a 5 year trek from the other end of the galaxy to come back home.

Do you want a balanced combat cruiser? The Norway-class is a good all-around combat vessel, decently maneuverable and packing a punch.

Do you want a heavy cruiser whose purpose is just to smash other ships into tiny bits? The Akira class is the heaviest Starfleet dedicated warship produced in the TV timeline, IIRC, and boy is it armed!

Do you want to pilot the Enterprise? Sovereign class carries all you need for war and peace.

Note that these are all TV series ships; Mew's said that we can use STO ships as well, which a couple of us (myself included) are doing. You can check out the UFP's shiplist in STO here, updated for 2410; some of them are TV-series ships, but some are also unique to this setting.

If you're not sure, I'd go with the Sovereign-Class. It's big, strong, but not overly specialized, which gives you a lot of wiggle room in what you do with it. Plus, it was the Enterprise-E, so you've got a lot of resources for what it has where and what it can do.

We seem to have a pretty good tank/DPS balance (at least from the STO ships I'm familiar with), so I'd say go with whichever one you prefer.

Yep, that's correct for the refit Sovereigns. Akira class has 6 phaser arrays, 15 torpedo launchers, and a chain reaction pulsar weapon; while the Saber class has 4 phaser arrays and 2 torpedo launchers.

Personality: Lasik lacks the common stereotypical Vulcan coldness that most attribute to her species. She is stern when she needs to be but generally does her best to keep spirits high on her ship.
Biography

Originally the daughter of lower class Vulcan immigrants to Earth, Lasik was later given up for adoption when her biological parents decided that they could not provide for her. For two years, Lasik waited for adoption. Her waiting ended when Captain Robert Keplings adopted her. His wife, Laura Keplings, had suffered a terrible injury during an accident aboard the USS Serenity. Without any way to bear children, her husband brought Lasik home to close an emptiness that his marriage had without children.

Until the age of fourteenth, Lasik had not ever thought that she was not the biological daughter of the Keplings. They treated her with kindness and taught her the importance of understanding how other people felt. This was due to her parent's careers. Robert was an ambassador for the United Federation of Planets and her mother had been the captain of a scientific mission. Lasik was taught to understand other people's feelings and to compromise with them. Originally, she found this to be quite difficult but after years of practice, Lasik was able to adapt to life with human parents.

As with all things, Lasik grew up and discovered the truth about her race. Having rarely seen a Vulcan before, Lasik felt incredibly isolated and alone. While she still cherished her adoptive parents, she longed to know who her people were. Inspired by her parent's inclination towards peace, science, and discovery, Lasik chose to join Starfleet to find other Vulcans and to learn their culture, along with any other people she came across.

After graduation from Starfleet, Lasik was selected to lead a scientific journey as Lieutenant of the USS Progress, a Sovereign Class star-ship. On this journey, the Progress was attacked by a Klingon scouting party. Most of the officers and crew were killed, leaving Lasik in command. During the battle, the Progess destroyed two Klingon vessels. The third vessel hailed the brigade and surrendered. Grieving for her crew and full of wrath, Lasik ordered the ship to be destroyed, claiming the Klingons were faking and were setting a trap.

For her bravery, Lasik was given the rank of captain just as a few small skirmishes between Starfleet vessesls and Klingon ones. An official war never broke out, but a total of six ships were lost during the misunderstanding. After this incident, the guilt of what she had done caught up with Lasik. She lead a five year mission and kept up a jovial act around her officers and crew. The vastness of space and the fear of having lost her purpose for peace eroded away at the young woman. During this mission, however, Lasik rediscovered her purpose, to protect and defend the lives of those who were threatened by misunderstandings or violence.

When she returned from her five year mission, Lasik was ready to put her past behind her and keep leading scientific voyages. The Borg made this impossible. War had begun and many experienced captains were being put in command of warships. The fear of war kept Lasik awake for many nights until she made a decision. Rather than wait to be reassigned, she chose to do it herself. She reasoned that, sometimes, she had to take up arms to protect life. And, perhaps, she could find some way to find a peaceful outcome midst a terrible war.

The USS Vigilance was originally under the command of Captain Henry Matterson. The Vigilance was ambushed by a Borg vessel and several escorts and sustained heavy damage. Matterson was able to escape the ambush but was heavily wounded and eventually died. The story of the Vigilance might have had a different ending, if not for Lasik Keplings.

The young captain saw the damaged ship being repaired and was impressed by its size. Unwilling to captain a science vessel into war, she specifically inquired about being assigned a warship. It was decided that she would command the Vigilance. At the same time, Lasik was given new training in how to command a warship. Once repaired, the Vigilance was given to her new captain and now speeds towards a rematch with the Borg.
