Omorfi was the first to answer, since the detective had used the term, "lady" before "gentlemen ", As much as she wanted to avoid talking about the sirens' post singing curse, it was an important part of the story.

She fidgeted on the perch a bit and then said, "Before I heard any shots, we, the band had just played the last song of the set. I couldn't stay on the stage any longer because I have a condition that I have to eat after an hour or so of singing, so I flew to the upstairs storage room, where we put an ice chest, with my food in it.."

"Faunsto," said Omorfi, nodding at the Satyr, "came to check in me a minute later. He left and Grinz," nodding at the goblin, "came to the store room to ask about the last song. Then I heard the first shot and then another shot. The rest of the band rushed up to the store room and Cretian," she said, indicating the Minotaur, barricaded the door. We stayed there for a bit, until about a minute or so after we heard the UFPD call for the gunman to surrender."

Eqitizus, the Centaur, echoed Omorfi's story, but related that he and Cretian were still on the stage, about to pack gear, when they heard the first shot and saw the man, that they later learned to be Sheriff Neil, shoot at the ceiling and demand for the arrest of the singer. Then they went upstairs to protect Omorfi.

Homer told the detective about how Neil had been intercepted by the Silver Bullet bouncers and waived his badge at them, threatening bloodshed if he and his men were hampered from capturing "the singer", because they were going to "lynch him". Then, Homer had stood up on the stage and called the Sheriff a liar, because "the singer" was a female. The bouncers managed a stand-off with the Sheriff and his men, until they left, after being called to surrender by the local police.

One of the Silver Bullet barmaids brought everyone some coffee and then the detective turned to the other witnesses.

Gaius scribbled down some notes. "Yeah I think we heard some of your songs from our patrol car. That last one had some soul, I'll tell you that. Know anything about the situation downstairs?"

The last question was addressed to everyone there however, not just the band, but the goblin, vampire and zombie customer still present. Gaius watched them all intently, pen hovering over paper.

The Goblin's story was probably a lot like the band's story. Homer wondered what the others had seen and heard.

"Of course not, we were simply meeting him. If we had notified any local authorities it would be been classified as a sting operation and therefore we would need a warrant and lawyer present. We were simply following up on a lead and trying to garner some ties to the organization. That isn't a crime nor against protocol. I think since he knew that there was no record of this meeting he'd try and kill me to get rid of the leads I had" Carver shook his head and motioned for a lighter, "you got a lighter?" he then asked.

Malraah made some more notes on his notepad. His cellphone gave a little "bing", and he checked it briefly, before putting it away tiredly and rubbing his forehead with a long fingered hand. He slowly produced a pack of "Spider Rider" cigarettes and a lighter, pulled a cigarette from the pack, put itto his mouth and lit it, pulling deeply before breathing out a small cloud of smoke. He pushed the lighter across the table to Carver.

"If you believed that this individual had ties with a group that was actively breaking the law however, and in a manner serious enough to warrant further investigation, then you should have done so through the proper channels. If there was enough evidence of wrongdoing, then a sting operation could have been organised between yourself, Imperial police and my department, ensuring that we got audio and visual recording of any admissions in that office. Urbis Forum law wouldn't require a lawyer in the room if the crime is as serious as you state. And if this was just an investigation, without enough evidence to get a warrant for a sting operation, then you should really still notify my department of it. You are an elected sheriff of a Victorum town, not an Imperial officer, and so technically have no jurisdiction to carry out such an investigation in Urbis Forum without clearance. Its clear you and your men would need to be those engaging in the investigation, but you still need to notify the local precinct so we know what is going on when shots start getting fired in a local crowded bar".

Malraah sighed deeply. "I'd like for you to tell me, in detail, exactly what was happening in that office. How many of you were in there? What are their names? What weapons were they carrying? What set the half-elf off to draw his weapon of you? Do you have any visual or audio recordings of what happened in that office?"

Carver sighed as he lit the cigarette, "I was simply doing my civic duty as a member of law enforcement. I understand this isn't my jurisdiction but when people in Victorum are threatened by said group I'm going to do whatever I can to protect them. If I'm at fault for anything, it's simply not thinking before carrying out my investigation and I will take full responsibility for that" he paused.

Carver read off a list of names, "all seven of these men are close associates of mine. Local business leaders, religious heads, government officials, etc! I have been building a tight network of men who wish to destroy this plague of labor unity. All men were deputized in Victorum and I created a posse to meet with this individual. The half-elf named Conner Brightwing, chose the time and place, so we met him when expected. I began spouting off how we were going to bring in the leaders of his organization, he reached for his holster and yelled 'die human scum' so I lunged and to prevent him from acquiring his weapon. The struggle ended as I was forced to plunge my knife into him, it ended there. As he lay dead, the band began playing and another associate of mine pulled his pistol, so I was forced to draw upon and fire on him. I could sense the magic within the singer's voice, although it was distorted through the walls, which I believe prevented our minds from being fully controlled by this menace. I ended up letting my anger get the best of me and fired a round to disperse the crowd to try to speak with the band. Now we are here, is that all?" Carver ashed his cigarette, "also no visual or audio recordings, Conner said absolutely no wires or the meeting would not take place".

Malraah continued to make notes carefully. His phone gave another "ping". He read it again and put it back away.

"Not quite yet sheriff", he said. "I'm just trying to ensure we get your side of the story of what happened after that. Do remember what exactly you said after you fired your gun to disperse the crowd? And anything else you may have said after that?"

"Like I said, I let my temper get ahead of me. I yelled something about lynching, I didn't mean it nor did I assault anyone. Any of my men will collaborate what I am saying here and it is on record that Conner was radical terrorist links. I have cooperated with everything you have asked, I'd either like a lawyer or for me to go back home to my wife and children" Carver crossed his arms, becoming very irritated with the goblin.

(Homer Kayjack, the Silver Bullet bar)

Homer then saw something unexpected, there was a large black cat sitting near the back of the Silver Bullet stage and it was staring at him. Were Homer’s eyes playing tricks on him? It seemed that the cat was pointing at him and motioning Howard to join it in, backstage. Homer pointed a finger at himself, as if asking the cat that it wanted him. The cat nodded, appearing to say, ‘yes’, and repeated it's beckoning motion.

The detective and the other witnesses were all engaged with one another, so Homer walked back to where the cat was waiting for him.

So he would have smaller chance of disturbing the others, Homer softly said to the feline, “What's new, pussycat?”

Homer’s jaw dropped, in stupifyed amazement, as the cat replied with equal softness, “Come with me, if you want to live.”

Malraah took a final note, before putting away his notepad and pen. He picked his lighter and cigarets back up and pocketed those as well. He looked at Carver and smiled broadly.

"Thank you Mr Neil. Unfortunately I'm afraid that is going to have to be the former optionr".

Standing up he said. "Carver Neil, you are under arrest for recklessly discharging a weapon in a crowded area and for incitement of imminent violence. You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention, when questioned, something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do or say may be given in evidence. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney one may be provided ..."

A knock on the door interrupted the goblin Captain, somewhat ruining the effect. "Enter" he said briskly.

A ratman officer poked his head around the door. "Someone important here to see you Cap".

"It can wait" said Malraah shortly.

"No Cap, it really can't. Its urgent, real urgent, like drop everything else and come now urgent".

Captain Malraah sighed deeply. "Stay right there". He said to Carver sharply, and strode from the room, locking the heavy metal door behind him.

He was gone for some five minutes, before the door opened again. A medium height man strode in, dressed in a heavy black overcoat and wearing long pyjama pants. He was wearing fluffy slippers on his feet, and carried two mugs of steaming coffee. Behind him came a skeleton, dressed in a chauffeur's outfit, and wearing a chauffeur's hat.

The man took a seat opposite Carver, and pushed a mug of the black coffee with a ridiculous amount of sugar over to him. He looked at him and gave a big crooked smile.

"Good morning Carver. Had a bit of an interesting night have we?" asked Urbis Forum Chief of Police Cassius Gladio.

Grinz glanced at the small card, which he had shoved into the deep recesses of his suit pocket. He touched the card unconsciously, aware of the danger it posed to him. Finé, Inc. had been Pale Legion-affiliated for years, everyone knew that. If his boss found this card... if he was associated with the Pan-Sentient Unity Party... well, no use thinking about that.

Grinz watched the policemen warily. Law enforcement, he thought. Even though no one was watching him, even though the police couldn't possibly know about his illegal business... every moment he spent in the bar was dangerous. He inched towards the door slowly, intending to slip out while the bar was distracted. It wouldn't do for him to be involved in this - he had no way of knowing how much of his illegal activities were known to the law enforcement, but a blight on his criminal record could endanger Finé and result in the loss of his job. He drew on the ancestral stealthiness of his goblin predecessors and slipped past the policemen with barely an inch to spare. One more foot and he could forget all about the Pale Legion and the Pan-Sentient Unity Party, murders and law enforcement, one more foot and he was free of all this -

Crooked Alley, just outside The Silver Bullet Bar

Cabra had returned to the crime scene after helping escort Carver Neil off to the precinct for his and Malraah's "little chat". The Satyr officer stood outside the "DO NOT CROSS" tape, calmly watching the journalists still doing their bits in the cold dark of 00:30am. Th cameras were on, so he couldn't smoke, and that was pissing him off. Even more annoying, at least ten different journalists had asked him to comment so far. Each had been met with a flat "We have no comments at this time", but some of the ravenous vultures had tried to push him on it anyway. They had been met with a glare and a "move along now", which was respectful police talk for "if you don't get that F...ing camera out of my F...ing face I will F...ing remove your genitalia and shove them up your ..."

Cabra's musings were broken by a goblin trying just a little to hard to sneak out of the bar. Carver was gone of course, as were the captain, off to the precinct, so it couldn't be for fear. What was more, the goblin looked just a little too much like he was trying to sneak out for him to just be leaving to head off home.

"Oi!" said Cabra, noting the goblin. "Heading off are we? Have you given your name and contact to Lieutenant Julii yet? We might need to call on you if this goes to court. Never mind, let me just get your details". He took out his notepad. "Name, number and address please good sir, then you can be on your way".

Grinz whipped around and stared at Cabra uncomprehendingly for a moment. "My name is... ah... Vargen Epshelm," he said, using the first name that came to mind and immediately berating himself for adopting such an obviously un-goblin name. "459-008-11276 is my number, and I live at... 1300 Shady Lane. Forn." Inventing a string of numbers was easy enough, and so was recalling the address of his childhood home, but he really did need to come up with a permanent fake identity. "That it? Can I go?" he asked, discreetly shuffling towards the door.

"Yes. Thank you" said Cabra, boredly scribbling down the details on a pad of paper. "You have a safe night Mr Epshelm". The Satyr officer pocketed the pad of paper and pen, and went back to quietly cursing these media vultures in his head, wishing they would leave so that he could enjoy a cigarette.

Grinz exhaled and backed away. As he pushed open the door and stepped outside, a loud dwarven voice behind him boomed:

"Epshelm? That ain't Epshelm!"

The goblin froze, his fingers trembling on the doorknob. A meaty hand grabbed the back of his suit and yanked him backwards.

"Abandon me, did you?" the dwarf hissed in Grinz's face, his breath laced with the sickly smell of alcohol. "Left me to die? Bet you're working with them," he snarled. "The Pale Legion. The murderers. Finé's involved with that trash, everyone knows that... You heard about my dwarven supremacist group, didn't you. Led me here to kill me, didn't you. Probably killed that other guy too, didn't you." Epshelm breathed heavily and bellowed, "DIDN'T YOU?"

"No - I -" Grinz squeaked, but Epshelm clouted him in the back of the head.

The dwarf seized Grinz by the neck and swung him towards Cabra. "This goblin's a liar, hear me?" he demanded, shaking him roughly. Grinz doubled over, spluttering. "M'name's Vargen Epshelm, and this here goblin is a criminal an' a murderer."

Cabra glared down at the Goblin. "Let me see some Identification" he said sharply. "Lying to a police officer is a serious offence. You know what that is sonny boy? That's obstruction of justice. You better have some identification".

He did not immediately trust the dwarf either however. "Lets see some ID from you too there buddy".

These were some serious allegations, at the very least, both the goblin and the dwarf would need to come in for questioning.

Behind the goblin and the dwarf in the main part of the bar, Sterk had just come out of the bathroom. The Half-Dwarf had needed to take a leak quick. Hearing the commotion, Sterk moved forward quietly, watching he goblin and dwarf for any funny business.

Epshelm released Grinz's neck and glared at the satyr officer. "Whaddaya need ID from me for?" he snarled, shoving the goblin away. Grinz stumbled sideways and sucked in gasps of air, massaging his neck.

"ID?" the goblin gasped. "Sure - just a... moment..." He doubled over, using the motion to slip Epshelm's wallet out of his pocket and slid the driver's license out deftly. He tucked the wallet into his pocket and slowed his breathing. "Here you go," he said quickly, briefly letting the light flash across the name Vargen Epshelm and obscuring the photo with his thumb. He hastily slipped the license into his suit pocket before Cabra could get a good look at it and glanced at the satyr. "Am I good to go?"

The dwarf grumbled unintelligibly and dug around in his pocket. "He's the impostor, not me... Stupid goblins, they're all liars... Where's my -"

He stopped and turned around slowly. The dwarf's beady eyes rested on the goblin for a moment. "Griiiinz!" he roared, throwing his considerable weight onto the goblin and crushing the air out of him. "You filthy little goblin! Don't - you - dare - steal - from - me!" With each word he pummeled Grinz's chest.

Grinz's eyes rolled back in his head, jerking his arms helplessly. "Officer - !"

Sterk came charging forwards and tackled Epshelm off the goblin, using quite considerable strength to hold him down as Cabra slapped a pair of handcuffs onto the Dwarf's wrists.

Cabra moved over to the collapsed goblin, and picked up the fallen wallet and ID. He looked at the ID, and saw the dwarf's face next to the name. "The dwarf is telling the truth about his name" he said simply. "His name is Vargen Epshelm".

"Great" said Sterk, straightening up after having physically subdued the dwarf. "Vargen Epshelm, you are under arrest for assault. You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention, when questioned, something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do or say may be given in evidence. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney one may be provided for you. Do you understand?"

Cabra was busy slapping handcuffs on the still winded goblin in the mean time. "Obstruction of justice, lying to a police officer, theft and impersonating another person with criminal intent, you have quite a list against you now don't you. Now I'm going to ask you one more time, and if you lie its is just going to make things worse for you. What is your name?"

Carver tipped his hat as the man walked in, grabbing the coffee offered and began sipping on it. "Interesting doesn't do it justice" Carver scoffed, "I was apprehended by filthy claws and degraded as I was trying up uphold the law. Accused of outrageous things, I'm glad a level-headed fellow human could come and sort things out. You are Cassius Gladio right? Chief here? We've never formally met but we've crossed paths before at law conventions. You are doing some great work here in the capitol. Now, speaking to a man of such prestige who understands that law is necessary, from sheriff to chief, what can I do to get out of here? I heard your department is lacking funding, that being said, ironically some of the men I work with are generous benefactors to the justice system and are looking to improve law here in Urbis Forum" Carver grinned, finishing his coffee.

Cassius smiled. "You would indeed be correct as to my identity Sheriff, but please do just call me Cassius. Such a little misunderstand is most unfortunate, but I'm sure we can clear this matter up". He took a sip of coffee.

Cassius smiled again broadly, showing his sparking white teeth. "Indeed you are also correct that this fine department of mine is, tragically, underfunded. A generous donation, particularly regular generous donations, could go a very long way towards helping this department ensure we don't have similar such issues of ... confusion". Cassius smiled at his own comment.

"Did you have a particular figure in mind of what kind of monthly donation these friends of yours would consider contributing?" he asked. He sipped his coffee, watching the sheriff intently.

This would be an amazing opportunity for The Pale Legion, with upcoming elections the Legion needed a larger presence in the capitol and had several rallies already planned. Having a chief under their thumb would make things much easier, growing their network of illicit deals. "Well chief with the upcoming elections we are shorthanded, but we can afford fifteen thousand Agenos a month for department. I think it would benefit both our parties.. I'm being generous here I believe" Carver was ready to leave back home, anxiously awaited his release.

Abel made a small grimace as he was offered a cup of coffee, taking it only out of a sense of politeness. It smelled cheap and burnt, like a bad instant coffee. He pushed it slightly away from him and towards Moe, who was already taking deep gulps from his piping hot mug. He looked up when the detective addressed a question to him and the others at the upstairs bar.

"We didn't hear any shots before that bastard came charging the stage . Then, it happened quite quickly, just like everyone else said. He fired a shot in the air, and threatened to start shooting if he wasn't allowed to 'lynch' that poor siren and her mates. It was chaos after that point. Mohammed and I took to the side of caution and made to go behind the bar as soon as the issue started." Moe nodded silently as Abel spoke for the pair, staring at the detective with a hint of loathing.

Abel sighed, looking disappointing. "It does seem all a bit like a shoddy excuse to attack the siren for her song. If they were in any way related to the crime he accused them of, I fail to see how they might have played any role except to distract in which case, accusing them seems a bit sudden."

"Not that it bloody matters, god's name. The bloody pigs are going to let him walk," muttered Moe, none too quietly.

Cassius did not look impressed. "I thought you said you knew wealthy friends considering offering donations to the Urbis Forum Police department, not broke friends". He shifted in his seat and gave Carver a hard stare. "Mr Neil, resources here are stretched quite remarkably thin, and I'm afraid I don't think fifteen thousand a month will be enough to even prevent my officers from clearing up this little issue. You see, the current evidence seems to point towards you advocating imminent violence, with multiple eye-witnesses, and a confession from you meeting that description".

Cassius sat back. "Now, if the department had a little more funding on a monthly basis, maybe we would be able to investigate the matter more fully. Then we might just find that such claims were not made exactly how they appeared to be, and maybe with us using our funds to cover so many more important cases, we might just misplace any evidence of your confession. But I'm afraid to say that fifteen thousand Agenos a month would barely scratch the surface on that. Now, if you and your friends were collectively able to donate five hundred thousand a month, then we might be able to actually get somewhere on ensuring misunderstanding like this are cleared up quickly and efficiently, and are consistently and permanently cleared up". Cassius looked at the Sheriff expectantly.

The Silver Bullet Bar

Gaius took down some more notes on his pad after talking to Abel. He heard Moe's less than subtle insult to the police, and glared at the zombie. He turned and left the group, having gathered enough information for now.

"Ungrateful rotting flesh bag" he said to himself as he left, none too quiet either.

The Silver Bullet bar.

Some of the reporters still swarmed the scene of the near riot, but unlike those that didn't have a twenty-four hour telecast, the local branch of WCNN went live as soon as they collected enough corrobarative stories. WCNN's competition scrambled and made phone calls, offering freelance reporters on-air time and story credit for a coherent report that they could air.

WCNN reporter Felicia Navidad gave her report:

"I'm Felicia Navidad. In Forn, at the Silver Bullet bar. Gunfire erupted shortly after the rock band, 'Exhalos', finished their musical set. Two people are confirmed dead. A human, now identified as Victorum Sheriff Carver Neil, fired his weapon inside the bar and demanded the arrest of the band's singer, for the purpose of a lynching."

"At one point, the Sheriff used the words, "lynch him". A student from the university radio station pointed out that the lead singer, Omorfi Foni, a siren, was in fact a female and called the Sheriff a liar from the stage."

"Here, now, is Tamos, a bouncer here at the Silver Bullet bar. Tamos, do I have the story correct and what was your perspective of the action?"....

"Ah that's Kamos hey love" said the huge Minotaur, unable to help but grinning as he enjoyed his moment in the lime light.

"Yeah that's about right though love. I was on my shift watchin' things out front I was, and then I hears these shots fired in the bar. Now we've had a a gun fired in the bar before, so I've got experience taking down the idiots what bring them. This time it weren't no drunk though, its Sheriff Carver Neil no less, leader of the bloody, sorry love, leader of the Pale Legion. Or at least that's what I hear around the town. Anyways, fella and his men are in there, waving their guns about. Say theys been attacked by a mob or some such working with the band. Nonsense I say. Band up on stage doing their performance, innit? Says theys lawmen, don't make me laugh, and says they want to lynch the poor singer! Nonsense".

"Ways I sees it, they got upset about a siren singing so good, or got mad cause they 'ave to deal with races other than humans, and they goes and blows their top off and shoots people. They certainly won't be welcome back down 'ere, I can tell you that".
