"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Chesire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.' "

"We have breaking news for you this evening. Just minutes ago, a massive explosion shook Seattle. There appears to have been some sort of 'critical systems failure' at the Arc Corporation's Research and Design facility. The body count isn't known but estimates are in the hundreds..."
Aug 16, 2057

"An investigation of The Arc Corporation got underway today following the deadly incident at the Tech Giant's Seattle R&D facility. According to government sources, 'The Arc corporation did not have the proper authorization to conduct any experiments that should have resulted in such a catastrophic and dangerous failure.'"
Aug 29, 2057

"And in other news, The Arc Corporation, run by Dr. Henry Carroll, has just announced a new multi-billion dollar facility to be built in a remote region of the Sierra Nevada mountain range just two years after the incident in Seattle which left more than a hundred people dead. Some are asking, 'is it too soon?' "
Feb 24, 2059

" Dr. Carroll, people are curious about what exactly it is that you do here, especially after the... 'Incident'."

"We are doing what we have always done here at the Arc Corporation: exploring the boundaries of our universe."

"Some are asking if you and your company should be allowed to continue operating after so many were killed."

"We have complied with every law, regulation, and restriction placed upon us. The Arc Corporation is completely within the framework of U.S. and International Law."
Dec 3, 2061

Welcome to the White Rabbit Project. Your character will be some sort of specialist hired by the infamous Arc Corporation. For years, the company was one of the world's leading technology developers, pushing the boundaries of science and technology. They also started to delve into applications of theoretical physics, and some whispers started to emerge that they were on the verge of a "quantum" leap.(Pun intended). Then disaster struck. A deadly explosion cast the company into a terrible light. The lost nearly all of their shareholders and investors, leaving Dr. Henry Carroll as the sole proprietor of the company he started from nothing. After a grueling government investigation, which turned up nothing, both Carroll and the company faced ridicule and public outrage, but the tech mogul wasn't defeated. Scraping together his life savings, and begging a few dollars out of a few weary investors, and constructed a new R&D facility in a remote location.

For months, no one heard anything about Arc or Carroll, but then you received a letter in the mail. It was a job offer. It was sparse on the details, but the pay rate caught your eye. 50k for every week of work. You are an expert in your field, but lately, you've been having to stretch a few more dollars than normal. Maybe you were fired, maybe your work dried up, it doesn't matter; this job could be exactly what you are looking for...

Hello! I am the Cyberiad, and I will by your OP! The idea for this, or at least the name and title image came from Netflix's White Rabbit Project staring the "B" cast of Mythbusters, as well as the general concept of Stargate, and some of the general setting from Netflix's The Discovery. In this RP, your character will be some sort of specialist that would be beneficial on a scientific trip to another world. We need scientists as well as soldiers. For whatever reason, you have fallen on hard times financially, or maybe you are just looking for adventure. You don't know anything about the "White Rabbit Project", except that Dr. Carroll is assembling "Expedition & Survey Teams". This is set in the year 2062, so you can have some slightly fancy gadgets.

  1. General NS rules apply
  2. No godmoding/metagaming
  3. Don't kill anyone
  4. Your character *could* die... (just don't do anything stupid, and you should be fine)
  5. Try and keep some simblance of reason and realism

Dr. Henry Carroll, Founder of the Arc Corporation
Name: Henry Maximillion Carroll

Appearance:
Image

Age: 62

Gender: Male

Personality: Carroll has been called almost everything under the sun by his peers and competitors. But they all agree he is pragmatic, and driven. He built Arc from nothing but a dream. He isn't boisterous, but he carries an air of power, respect, and purpose. He is refined in his speech and mannerisms but is willing to play dirty to accomplish his goals, or to cripple an adversary (both of which seem to align frequently). Although he tries to solve problems as simply as possible, he will turn to masked brutality when someone tries to press him into a wall. He is cunning, but often times in the worst way possible, he moves towards a vision whether or not people follow him or oppose him. One thing is for certain, Carroll is a visionary, and one with the ability and means to bring it to fruition.

Bio & Credentials: Born in the year 2000 to parents struggling to stay above the poverty line, Henry had to throw himself to school in hopes he could break free of the same life his parents had. He was smart and clever which served him well through his public education. In middle school, he read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. He fell in love with the book and was fascinated that he and the author shared a surname (which he learned later was a pen name). All through his education, he kept coming back to the book. Plenty of people asked him why he had an old and tattered copy on his desk, and he couldn't really explain; it just symbolized something to him.

Carroll went on to put himself through MIT on a full ride scholarship, earning his first Doctorate in theoretical physics, before making the most of his scholarship and going back for two more in theoretical physics and quantum mechanics. After he decided he had enough of school, he went to work for a private research institution. His research there propelled him to win a Nobel Prize in Physics alongside two other colleagues for their work in helping understand gravitational waves to a greater extent. Continuing his research, Carroll developed engine and battery technology that would eliminate the need for petroleum-based fuels. Realizing the enormity of the potential in his designs, he quit the R&D firm to start his own company along with some of the co-workers that helped develop the technology alongside him.

Arc quickly made millions producing the new and better engines for everything from motorcycles to jumbo jets. The technology was also applicable to large-scale power generation, and Arc's engineers and scientists quickly applied it to the development of fusion technology with the first ever operational fusion power plant being built as a joint project by Arc and the U.S. Department of Energy in 2041. Through a series of questionable financial suggestions and manipulation, Carroll had managed to buy the stocks of his two main associates, leaving him with majority stock by 2038. He quickly became one of the richest men in the world, but still kept a somewhat austere lifestyle.

Under his guidance, his company was transforming the world in a few short decades with his competitors scrambling to develop competing technology. That, of course, almost ended after the 'Incident'. Arc still will not release the true story of what happened that day in Seattle. It was one of their main R&D labs, but what they were working on was a closely guarded secret. The government tried to investigate, but Arc's research was too advanced for the feds to truly understand what they were looking at, and in the end, they couldn't understand enough to charge the company with much, but the damage had already be done. Contractors and investors cut all ties with the company, and the public flung ridicule.

Occupation/Area of Expertise: Founder and CEO of Arc But have a Doctorate in physics, theoretical physics, and quantum mechanics.

Alex Walker (Example App)
Name: Alexander "Alex" Walker

Appearance:
Image

Age: 36

Gender: Male

Personality: James is oftentimes abrasive to people that haven't known him for long, and even more so to his long-time friends, but in a loving, joking way. He can be a bit of a cheeky wise guy, and his smart mouth has gotten him into and out of several situations. He tries to act nonchalant, but he does care, even if he hates to show it. One thing that only helps enable him, is his intelligence, which he tries to play down most of the time.

Bio & Credentials: James grew up seeing the innovations Arc brought to fruition. He was in awe of the groundbreaking research and startling new technology that literally changed the world. However, his lack of drive left him scrambling finish college. He might have done so, but he was expelled after hacking into the school's database and "correcting" a professor's research in quantum physics. James' work was correct, but the humiliated professor made sure that he would be dismissed. Dr. Carroll heard the story on the news, and much to James' amazement, offered him a job in his R&D department. He placed James on several projects, giving him a higher position each time until he was running cutting-edge research.

Eventually, Carroll approached James with the White Rabbit Project. It was the most ambitious thing ever attempted by the company and potentially the history of science. This was what was being worked on in Seattle when the "Incident" occurred. Surviving, bloodied and injured, but in one piece, James was there when it happened. He watched in near despair has the empire his mentor had built started to crumble brick by brick. They lost over 90% of their employees, and 99% of their shareholders. Most of the surviving members of the Project stayed on board, knowing that what they were working on would change everything.

After the Sierra Nevada facility was built, James was promoted to director of research, but that was mostly an empty title since there was almost no one else it could possibly go to. They lost more scientists as time wore on, but Carroll was steadfast in his goals. They pressed on.

Occupation/Area of Expertise: Director of Research for the Arc Corporation. Has no official degree, but is an expert in quantum mechanics, and quantum computing/simulation.

Likes: "Old" Rock and Pop Bands, being in charge.

Dislikes: people who can out-sass him.

You will be exploring strange and completely unpredictable worlds, so Dr. Carroll will want to assemble a team that will be able to study and assess these new worlds for stuff and things.

so he might want to hire a chemist to analyze soil samples and environmental conditions, a geologist, a meteorologist, A biologist (might have to deal with some xenobiology), he might want to bring some skilled theoretical physicists that can analyze something that-has-yet-to-be-revealed-by-the-OP.

And then you will need people with guns to protect the scientists from any strange threat that could beset them.

Name: Prof. Cassandra "Cassie" Lamarck, PhD, DSc

Appearance: Image link.

Age: 29

Gender: Female

Personality: Cassie is an exceedingly curious woman, in the literal sense, whose interests are many and diverse. She finds immense joy in learning new things, discovering foreign places, unlocking mysteries and solving puzzles. This extends beyond her work in the academic community, and permeates many aspects of her life: she is inquisitive, somewhat impulsive, who flies from subject to subject as her fancy carries her. She can be over-talkative, and if allowed to carry on will lecture for hours about her favorite or most dedicated subjects.

Bio & Credentials: Cassandra Lamarck was born to two professors: her mother, Elizabeth, who taught anthropology at the University of London, and her father, Theodore, a neuroscientist employed at Oxford. Her parents were kind, academic-minded people, who encouraged Cassandra from a young age to pursue whatever she loved most. It was no small part they played in her educational development, not only due to their love of learning, but also the home in which they raised her, which was always teeming with life: if not their own pets, of which they owned many - three dogs, two cats, five birds, a tarantula and a rude iguana named Stephan - but also the various subjects that her father brought home for study, a menagerie of rabbits, rats, reptiles and whatever else he could find.

It was little surprise, with such a life, that Cassandra found a deep and lasting interest in the function and existence of living creatures. She would carry around a notebook and pencil, sharp and ready to write, and jot down notes about the animals she saw in her day to day life. When she was eight, she presented these findings to her father, who joked that he would present them to his colleagues when he found the chance. He would stop joking some years later, when at the age of twelve she, with the help of her school, published a paper of the effects of domestication on the African grey parrot, comparing the two she owned to the wild captives her father introduced her to on a family vacation.

This studious nature and passion for life would follow Cassie into maturity. She attended Oxford at the recommendation of her father, where her knowledge of the creatures that surrounded her expanded exponentially. It was not long into her education that she was enlisting herself into the research teams of professors and doctors at the university who did field research in the most exotic of places, desperate for any taste of the wild she could grasp at.

She would graduate Oxford with honors, and return the next year - after a time abroad to backpack through Australia with her family - to continue her studies in pursuit of a doctorate, which she would achieve at the age of twenty-four. She would round out her academic achievements with a Doctorate of Science, which was granted to her at the age of twenty-six. She would stay at Oxford for several more years as a professor, until a new research opportunity in America forced her to request a leave of absence from her position...

Occupation/Area of Expertise: Cassandra is a doctor of zoology, having obtained a PhD from Oxford University, as well as a Doctorate of Science from the same institution, for her contributions to scientific research and publication in her study exceedingly rare animals, particularly those native to hostile climates. Though she focuses largely on zoology, she also studied general biology as an undergraduate, and has a masters on the subject.

Gear/Supplies: A portable lab and sample kit, containing various beakers, test tubes, portable microscopes, solvents, solutions, and tools used to examine any biological matter she may collect. A field surgery kit, particularly useful for providing autopsies to any deceased specimens she may come across. Various drugs useful for sedating specimens, as well as antibiotics and other medical necessities. A sleeping kit including a tent, sleeping bag, multi-tool, trowel, and a torch. Various toiletries. A water purification and test kit. Various basic survival gear, including rope, flares, a compass, and a lighter. A reinforced laptop. A pencil, pen and notebook.

Reason you are currently looking for work: When Cassie heard about Arc's continued research, she put out feelers within her academic circles, interested in what they could possibly be researching in the middle of the Sierra Nevadas. Though nothing returned to her through her sources, she was instead approached with an offer: to head the zoological and biological research on a new project, exploring a place before untouched by man. Enticed by the opportunity, she was more than willing to abandon her post, temporarily, to take on the task, whatever it may be.

Likes: Animals of all kinds, particularly those that have never been seen before, by her or anyone else. She's a fan of books, particularly science fiction and fantasy, and is a sucker for a story with dragons. To many people's surprise, she is also a huge meat eater, and loves a good steak.

Dislikes: Television, movies, any media that requires one to sit down and watch rather than read. Despite the advent of more sophisticated note-taking tools, she still has an aversion to typing her thoughts, preferring to write them instead. Stephen Fry.

Additional Info: She's never owned a car before, so driving that ATV should be fun.

No, I would prefer a leaner team with just players, but we will have senarios where you will get to command NPCs.

Would an anthropologist/archaeologist/linguist be a useful addition to the team or is there no evidence of sapient life on this other world? (at least not yet)

I would like five or six to get started, but that is flexible.

And it's not really based on Stargate at all, save for the idea of a portal to another world. (I never followed the series either.)

Name: Dr. Sydney Kirkegaard, Ph.D

Appearance: As pictured. Hair is dyed, it's naturally blonde. 5'10".

Age: 27

Gender: Female

Personality: Self-confident, perhaps a bit too much so. Inquisitive, and a tad eccentric. Tends to talk out loud in a sort of barely-audible mumble that students and coworkers have described as 'creepy'. Curious, and tends to dive into research on things both related to her work and not. Can vanish from Minnesota for months at a time on research or hunches of new places to research, or video games.

Bio & Credentials: Sidney Kirkegaard (no relation to the philosopher) was born to an architect, Hans, from Berkeley and a professional photographer, Martha. Both movie nerds and with a love of education, one of Sydney's first memories is of marathoning Harrison Ford-era Indiana Jones movies. This had a profound impact on her life, and was what probably set her on her course. Furthering her on her path was the vast number of books of ruins that her mother, had published and possessed in their home in the outskirts of Minneapolis.

Of course, she did more than just read picture books and play video games as she worked on her way through public schooling. She pored over actual photography and textbooks, published non-fiction from the likes of National Geographic, Scientific American, and Geographical. She would learn to draw as well, during this time, starting with a somewhat cartoonish style (that she continues to use for sketches and commission work to this day, reminiscent of Kohei Horikoshi) and soon enough moving on to a more 'traditional', realistic approach for 'proper' work.

Her first paper came at the age of sixteen when she wrote on the agricultural habits of the ancient Picts, an article that ended up being published in that month's Scientific American. This, along with a handful of other papers, would allow her entry to her alma mater of the University of Minnesota, often getting either asked or tricked into the research teams of various professors - one of whom, Dr. Markov, ended up giving her some of her eccentricities and fanning the flames of young Sydney's habit of getting lost in her work and/or pursuing research trips on an absolute whim on the off chance of finding something shocking - they did, after all, find a virtually intact Celtic tomb in central Turkey on one such trip.

She graduated three times - first with a bachelor's in 20th Century History, later with a master's of sociology, then, after several summers touring Europe, the Amazon, and central Africa (respectively), her doctorate in archaeology. Along the way she continued to draw, and got a license in firearms training from the NFA and the government of the State of Minnesota - just for protection in her words, and she would end up needing it in Africa a year after graduation when her exploration team was attacked by raiders in northern Zimbabwe. Despite being offered positions as far away as the University of Bologna (which she accepted for two years), but eventually settled home at the University of Minnesota's flagship campus.

Occupation/Area of Expertise: Doctorate in and professor of archaeology, University of Minnesota, as well as a master's of sociology and a bachelor's in 20th Century history from the same facility. Licensed firearms instructor from NRA and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Skilled artist (helped pad her scholarships by taking online commissions for her art)

Gear/Supplies: Hand pickaxe, full-size pickaxe, 4-inch brush, 2-inch brush, fine brush, 4-inch stainless steel trowel (pointed), 4-inch stainless steel trowel (square), plastic dust pan, filtered water bottle, shovel, large bucket (1 gallon), stainless steel scraper, wire screen bowl (1 liter), tape measure (30 m), Canon DSLR, pack of tongue depressors and toothpicks, soil core sampler, archaeological electronic multitool (GPR, resistivity meter, magnetometer, surveyor), 4 surveying panels. Pencil and notebook. Reinforced high-performance laptop, solar powered electronic drawing tablet (with reinforced diamond/sapphire screen) and stylus with 6 spare nibs. Toiletries. Lightweight tent and sleeping bag. Swiss Army knife. Ceramic switchblade knife. SilencerCo Maxim 9 integrally suppressed 9mm pistol. Hair dye.

Reason you are currently looking for work: Curiosity, what else? The entire situation has an eau de top secret non-government shenanigans, and if Sydney has learned anything from playing Metal Gear Solid on emulators, it's that top secret non-government shenanigans are always a jolly good time.

Likes: Video games, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy fiction, movies, guns, cheap thrills, comic books, regular books. Meat. History books, just getting 'away from it all' in ruins or the world. Post-apocalyptic stories. Art.

Dislikes: Real estate developers - while they provide a lot of sites, they destroy a lot more, and are 'somewhat less than human' in her mind. Alcohol, though it's less that she doesn't like it and more that it doesn't like her, as she's allergic.

Additional Info: If she thinks she can get away with it, she'll try and get her hands on one of the security team's rifles, preferably one of the newer caseless ones.

Fun fact: my original character idea before Cassie was a no-nonsense Russian army engineer with a love for new animals to cook. I'd say go for it.

Question: you mention soldiers in the RP, but Arc Corporation is a private company. So would these be PMCs, or has the US actually sent along active-duty personnel as liaisons of some sort?
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

Yes, the team will be required to set up some complex devices, so engineer's might be useful for that, and for just general repair work that might be needed.

Well, your character can come from a paramilitary type force, or be an ex-soldier from another country (honorably discharged or not), but Dr. Carroll is working on his own and preferably not under the scrutiny of the government, so he wouldn't go to the US military for help. And he finds himself a bit short-staffed, so he has turned to your character (if you decide to make a soldier character) to act as security. (But you don't really know what you are getting into.

So it's private contractors. Got it.
