I don't think a nation consisting of states that different could work. Eastern Timor, Singapore (To some extent, but could work, Singapore could become more or less poor. They may or may not be willing to give up democracy.), Brunei and the Philippines especially.

Honestly, I have faith in the ability of a stratocratic government to keep this thing together for the five years this RP will cover.
And also to make the Asia-Pacific region a whole lot more interesting if it has problems with the USA.

The Middle East doesn't have much oil now (See: East Africa, Antarctica and the Arctic.) and they probably would do the opposite of trying to avert a global conflict.

Any sort of major military conflict leading to the union is doubtful, as that would get the other world police great powers to join in. I'd imagine that the countries would probably come together for economic reasons, like you said in the last bit of your post. The global economic downturn would probably help motivate such a rash decision.

Could you change the fraction of Northern Europeans in your country to something between 75% and 85%? This map by the Pew Research Centre shows that the Nordic countries will be much more diverse than 94% Northern European with current medium-level population projections.
