It is January 1st, 2050.

The Earth's population of 9.7 billion looks upon the coming of this new decade with an uneasy ambivalence.

Technological progress, a process which has been speeding up exponentially since the development of agriculture, is now reaching new heights, and will transform society as it continues onwards. This is both threatening and promising; it promises to solve the rampant problems of overpopulation, environmental destruction and resource depletion, but it also threatens to destabilise society, exacerbate existing socioeconomic problems, and inflict even greater damage on the natural world, alongside the physical and mental wellbeing of humans. The Pandora's Box that is technological advancement cannot be closed, forcing the people of Earth to cross their fingers and hope for the best.

Many other changes are occurring as well. The Digital Revolution, which came into being almost a century ago, has had profound effects on society, as has continued the automation of production. The world is becoming increasingly more digitised, mechanised and computerised, and cultures turned molten by the spiritual advent of modernity adapt and change in turn. The automation of production has altered the socioeconomic state of the world in a way that is alien to the industrial period which lead up to it, forcing experimentation by the powers that be to adapt to this new system. In a world where corporations increasingly hold the reigns over political and societal organisation, the state is being forced to enact universal basic income measures in order to keep the hordes of unqualified and unemployed content. Economies stagnate and tumble as the world goes through a prolonged economic crisis brought about by resource scarcity and changes in society, with some even considering a zero-growth economy to be the only solution.

States which, due to technological progress, have an unprecedented ability to placate, suppress and keep watch over their citizens are now being forced to use those abilities in a rapidly-changing environment. Genetic engineering of lifeforms, alongside developments in artificial intelligence, promise to radically change the world even further in the near future, as the wealthy in some countries pay to genetically-tailor their children, governments routinely edit genetic diseases out of foetuses and people increasingly interact with near-human intelligence machines. Some are predicting that the obsolescence of Homo Sapiens in industrial society is inevitable at some point in the future, and they may be right.

Economic, cultural and digital globalisation have created a truly global world, but many cultures and civilisations are responding to this global world with an increasingly-belligerent provincialism as they struggle to remain distinct and independent. Sprawling megacities, churning pots of culture and human experience, house the majority of Earth's population, but are rife with inequality, ethnic tension and squalor.

Rare Earth metals and energy are becoming increasingly-scarce, as are basic necessities in the most impoverished parts of the world. Oil reserves in the Middle East are being rapidly depleted, forcing the Earth's petroleum industry to seek new sources in East Africa and the polar regions. The Earth's environment continues to deteriorate- the Earth's oceans are experiencing a full-blown mass dieoff in the face of acidification and pollution, the Earth's poles continue to experience rapid warming, desertification is reaching crisis levels (especially in the Sahel), and floods, fires, typhoons and droughts are becoming ever-more common as the Earth's climate becomes more extreme over time. Phosphate depletion and soil deterioration brought about by the Green Revolution is bringing the long-term feasibility of modern agriculture into question, especially in the developing world world. However, the Arctic clathrate gun appears to be firing at manageable levels for the time being, and profitable tritium-deuterium fusion power appears to be 15 years away for real this time.

Fertility rates are undergoing an unsustainable boom in Africa and South Asia, but at the same time have long-since collapsed in the developed world, where governments, economies and societies struggle to cope with the consequences. In the first world, the multi-generational decline of male sperm counts, something which has been observed since the 20th century, has reached a crisis point, further aggravating the fertility crisis there. The atomic-esque decay of liberalism and enlightenment values over time in the face of a changing world, alongside the hole left by liberalism's competitors which have long since been rendered obsolete, is forcing the creation of new philosophies, ideologies, and ways of governing society. Westphalian sovereignty and nation-states are being superseded, thrown into the dustbin of history as other forms of large-scale political organisation come into being.

The United Nations' de-facto legitimacy as a world forum is being challenged by modern geopolitical confrontations, increasing the likelihood of conflict. Military technology has advanced considerably- neural implants and "smart suits" allow for soldiers to communicate with eachother on the battlefield and sense incoming enemies with the aid of artificial intelligence. Powered exoskeletons are used by elite infantry and special forces troops. Electromagnetic weapons, including EMP and ELF weapons, are common on the battlefield. Although man-machine interaction is becoming crucial to combat, many combat roles are replacing humans altogether- military aircraft are now optionally or totally unmanned, autonomous drones equipped with built-in computers guide themselves through the sky towards targets, vehicles are self-driving, and advanced computer algorithms aid human generals in planning strategy. The seas swim with automated attack submarines, and immense aircraft carriers act as hive-like bases for everything from drones to fighter jets. Information has also become a crucial focus of war - hacking into or encrypting classified military information requires almost as much effort as fighting the enemy on the battle field, and the internet (much less free and more mass media-ish than in decades past) is crawling with espionage, cyber-terrorism and campaigns to sway public opinion. International corporations have merged with the military-industrial complex and pick sides on who to develop new weapons for.

Because of advances in both high-altitude weaponry and stealth bombers, any near-future nuclear confrontation through great powers will likely be done predominantly through unmanned bomber aircraft rather than missiles, which are less stealthy and have a greater chance of being shot down.

Space exploration has progressed, but not in a way that is meaningful to the vast majority of Earth's population. Lunar and Martian bases, mostly managed by aerospace companies, exist, but they are more comparable to Antarctic research stations than to actual colonies. However, metal shortages on Earth combined with discoveries made through unmanned exploration of the asteroid belt may soon change this state of affairs.

Welcome to 2050. The Modern Era is coming to a close, and a new era will dawn...

... Except it won't.

Little do the people of Earth know, in the next half-decade, the world as they know it will come to an end; not through any outside forces, but rather through the world's inability to cope with its own problems. Very real military and political tensions are rising in the midst of the world's mounting problems, and despite attempts to negotiate on these tensions by the powers that be, they are ineffective in the face of a quickly-changing world and will ultimately fail. There is nothing that can save the vast majority of Earth's 9.7 billion people from becoming irradiated corpses, lying in fields of shattered glass and twisted metal under a sky turned grey by nuclear fallout. We're on the road to Armageddon.

In other words, you will be part of a generation of world leaders that will ultimately fail in their efforts, and send the world as we know it tumbling down. TIMESCALE

We have five years to end the world- this RP will end on December 31st, 2055 at the very latest. Global war WILL break out sooner than this; I'd prefer you do it as early as possible, but go at a pace you're comfortable with keeping that in mind.

IC timescale will always be 6 months to a page, although I MAY do 4 months to a page if the situation demands it (such as if global war becomes very complex).

Some will say this is too fast, and that they need more time to build up characters- I disagree. Firstly, this RP is less about characters and more about geopolitics. Secondly, the people who advocate for this in nation RPs always seem to lose interest after a week, even if you give them what they want, and I actually intend on finishing this RP.

Even with PNG, Greenland and a bunch of Carribean minors annexed, you're still only bordering on 400 million or so people with the RP's projections. The only way I can see your pop being this big by 2050 is immigration, but your racial demographics don't speak of an immigration policy that would boost population like that - most current predictions talk about a United States which is minority-majority by the 2050 census, 53% nonwhite to be exact, and that's with current immigration projections. The amount Asians in your country compared to Mestizos suggests a more RAISE act-ish immigration policy and less migration in from Latin America, which would slow population growth.

I'm cool with all of this, except for your GDP growth rate. Your population trends are in the gutter, and have actually been shrinking at an accelerating rate since the start of the 2000s without stopping. Could you please make your GDP growth rate slightly below zero? IRL Russia's is currently -0.2% and their population is still hovering, so it seems reasonable.

By the way, real GDP growth rate refers to this, not the country's IRL GDP growth rate as of 2017. You seemed to be confused. Anyway, I can still somewhat see it being 2.7% in 2050 due to having a natural resources export-based economy in a world where demand is much higher and maintaining consistent population growth through immigration. The Arctic warming and oil running out in the Middle East actually helps your case as well. so I'll accept that GDP growth rate, but you'll be an exceptional country.

The "53% nonwhite" statistic you refer to isn't specifically sourced so I could be wrong, but the most consistent source on this I found was "Professionalism in Policing: An Introduction", which cites "Passel & Cohn, 2008", a nondescript source with which I can't find any connection with the 53% statistic; Anyways, included in this book is a pie chart in which they erroneously consider the linguistic classification "Latino/Hispanic" as a race (a very common theme among modern American racial demographers), while I exclusively used ethnic classifications (IE: White, Mestizo), so Spanish and Portuguese-descended whites are counted as whites under my statistics, half castizo (7/8ths) white hispanics, etc. are considered white, boosting the white numbers.

The percentage of Asians is large as a result of increased immigration from Asian countries, not decreased immigration from American ones. However upon review I do see how the current population count is somewhat high going by UN estimate numbers, how does 413,532,000 people sound?

The "53% nonwhite" statistic you refer to isn't specifically sourced so I could be wrong, but the most consistent source on this I found was "Professionalism in Policing: An Introduction", which cites "Passel & Cohn, 2008", a nondescript source with which I can't find any connection with the 53% statistic; Anyways, included in this book is a pie chart in which they erroneously consider the linguistic classification "Latino/Hispanic" as a race (a very common theme among modern American racial demographers), while I exclusively used ethnic classifications (IE: White, Mestizo), so Spanish and Portuguese-descended whites are counted as whites under my statistics, half castizo (7/8ths) white hispanics, etc. are considered white, boosting the white numbers.

The percentage of Asians is large as a result of increased immigration from Asian countries, not decreased immigration from American ones. However upon review I do see how the current population count is somewhat high going by UN estimate numbers, how does 413,532,000 people sound?

I don't think a nation consisting of states that different could work. Eastern Timor, Singapore (To some extent, but could work, Singapore could become more or less poor. They may or may not be willing to give up democracy.), Brunei and the Philippines especially.
