Under the urging of his Mentor Mizushima Kotaro, he challenged the LDP block holder for a seat in the Upper Diet, he along with two other members of the JCP took three of the eleven seats in the National Diet, a major political upset that caused panic in the relatively stable politics of Japan. This seat he would hold until 2002 when he made the largest political gaffe of his career, on the NHK (Public State TV) he was asked to respond to the recent September 11th Terror Bombing in the United States, his official comments of "Tragic, but well deserving." were met with incredible uproar from the general public; as well as some citizens of the United States. This resulted in his resignation and disappearance from public life, until 2009 where he announced his surprise candidacy in the Tokyo Prefecture. In a powerful and unprecedented voter turnout, brought on by his condemnation of the Bush Administration's Policies and the LDP controlled National Diet and Government, a large coalition of dissatisfied Japanese flocked to his candidacy. However his rhetoric was missing the Marxist tones and language of his earlier works. Turning this political force into a coalition of leftists, left leaning, and centrists voters, Toranosuke Yoshida amassed enough turnout and votes to win the National Election for Prime Minister in 2012. While the initial celebration was high, the realities of lacking real political power in the National Diet began to show immediately. Yoshida's ideas, described by both Japanese and Foreign pundits as a Japanese "New Deal", were shut out almost completely by the LDP coalition in Parliament. With the exception of a large Infrastructure Expansion plan, Yoshida's four year term as Prime Minister was that of a "lame duck", and he had to rely on his exclusive powers on the dictation of foreign policy to propel himself politically. In this term he called for an end to "The Eternal War and Aggression of the United States in the Korean Peninsula" and an end to "The American Pacific Empire" with demands of negotiations between the United States and Japan over the legitimacy and continued operation of US Military bases on the Japanese Home Islands. This pleased enough of the leftist parties, and their voters, to form a new coalition in an attempt to win a second term for Yoshida and a plurality in the National Diet. Toranosuke Yoshida won the National Election by just 13,000 votes, but his new coalition failed to achieve a plurality and remains five votes short of a simple majority going into the new year.
