I also checked the population again, you should be fine @Jas, there is about 400k extra I think you have, if you would like to reduce for chunkier numbers that is fine too.

@Kisi so pretty much the same problem as rl

400k extra in population? Oh, goody! I'll increase the population accordingly, and maybe increase the army by a little bit too (but I won't hit the army maximum, as I want some more room to expand the army during the RP).

I also made the other changes I mentioned before (changed Prussia to Saxony, and removed the mention of Hungary being part of Austria), so my revised app should be ready now.

This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here. What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us.
The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us.
The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. The danger is to the body, and it can kill. The form of the danger is an emanation of energy.
The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

You are going to have a lot of fun with the State of Yue, and ya, I imagine the current territorial league members are a lot closer than what was the initial Hanseatic League.

Could someone give me a quick rundown on exactly what the Yue's history is? Basically my entire existence will have to be based on playing Yue and Wu against each other so they don't get concerned over the uppity warlord states and I'd like it as a reference. Also willing to sell out to the first European power that wants a free port

Why would they be concerned over northern lands :P

Dunno in any case, you are a lot further north than both of them, though you have some small colonies, I imagine your main relations would be closer neighbours. such as Joseon, Qian (that one should be scary), or the orange to the south of you

Yay for free trade, another step towards the Hansa international trade network, now all I need is at least a small trading colony somewhere in Asia and I will be happy, however unlikely that will be.

WIP in WIP
Generic Info
Nation Name: Empire of the Great Wu/Dà Wú Dìguó/大吳帝國
Symbols: tbd
Location: 57
Population: est. 37,000,000 homeland (based off Allen's graphs) and 1,000,000 or less in the overseas empire
Capital City: Nanjing

Government Info
Government Type: Absolute monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The Emperor theoretically is the absolute monarch and Son of Heaven and all that jazz, but in practice, major kongsi (maybe Allen can help me find a Wu word that means sorta the same thing) companies/unions/whatever [this is a bad metaphor but imagine it like some of them are like big banks and some are more like big credit unions?] hold significant amounts of political and economic power, with their representatives at court essentially working like powerful lobbyists. The powerful Wu military, the sprawling bureaucracy, and the omnipresent secret police (the "Golden Eye") are all also significant centers of power in their own right, each competing to have its agenda drive imperial policy, and each coming into the orbit of different leaders and stakeholders depending on how the winds are blowing.

Wu also has the Assembly of Notables, essentially a large group of several hundred individuals from around the empire who offer "advisory" opinions to the cabinet and the government. One typically qualifies to become a Notable by building up a certain amount of money, but significant acts of service to the state or the people can also win appointments. The Notables send an Advisory Secretary to sit on the Emperor's cabinet, supposedly simply to offer the assembly's advice, but in practice the Advisory Secretary is actually one of its most powerful members.
Ideology: Confucian/Buddhist/Taoist/Legalist
Leader/s:
1. Emperor, Anfu (Zhao Chang)
Bio: Born, became known as a playboy but still pretty popular/lovable, ascended the throne, not really interested in administering the state and mostly just lets his mom do whatever. Generally sharper than he lets on, but seems profoundly uninterested in running the country. Has two principal wives and three daughters between them (11, 7, and 4), plus a bunch of other kids with concubines (including some sons, but unless those concubines are legitimized, those sons can't inherit). Actually mostly gay and having a covert affair with the head of the secret police. 29.
2. Empress Dowager, Xianghua (Qin Liyuan)
Bio: Born poor in Nanjing, became a dancer/courtesan, got noticed by the former emperor before his ascension to the throne and brought on as one of his concubines, quickly became his favorite. XH is a leader of the Liberal or Green faction at court, which favors populist reforms, an embrace of Europe and the West as a way to counterbalance Yue, and shifting national resources and priorities away from empire-building and towards improving the country and the lot of the people. 50.
3. Chancellor, Cao Caihou
Bio: Scion of the Cao family of Shanghai, who run one of the major kongsi conglomerates (the Cao kongsi's main interests are in shipping and porcelain production), entered civil service and quickly got a fairly high post, since he's both capable and very rich. CC is a leader of the Conservative or Purple faction at court, which opposes populist reforms and prefers policies that favor major business interests, along with keeping Western powers at arms' length and directly boosting Wu's global power to compete with Yue. Also has a seat in the Assembly of Notables, and is caretaking his father's seat as well, married with a son (11) and a daughter (9). 34.
4. Advisory Secretary, Zhang Biao
Bio: Elderly head of the powerful Zhang family of Suzhou, whose kongsi company produces artillery for the Wu army and also is a major porcelain manufacturer (and has its hand in about a dozen other businesses from silk export to shipbreaking). Largely responsible for convincing the Emperor to appoint Chancellor Cao (to his mother's annoyance). Has held the post of Advisory Secretary for nearly twenty years. Another leader of court Purples, widower with loads of children by two now-dead wives (and with plenty of grandchildren and even great-grandchildren). 82.
5. Retired Chancellor, Wei Liangsi
Bio: Born poor in Nanjing, childhood friend (and rumored lover, though not really) of the Empress who rose through the civil service to become Chancellor for fifteen years under the old emperor, and still lives in Nanjing. Retired two years ago and was surprisingly outmaneuvered by Advisory Secretary Zhang, who got Cao Caihou appointed over the expected successor, Zhu Heng. Another leader of court Greens. Widower, son and only child is a navy captain who commands a squadron in the South Pacific. 73.
6. East Sea Viceroy, Zhu Heng
Bio: Protege of Wei Liangsi, son of middle-class family (father was a clockmaker in Ningbo), rose through the civil service and was taken under Wei's wing. Expected to succeed Wei to the Chancellery, but the Emperor instead appointed Cao Caihou and made Zhu Heng the East Sea Viceroy- a powerful position that puts him in charge of the administrations of Hawaii, the Ryukyus, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the other islands of the Pacific, but which also essentially exiles him [haven't decided if he'll be in NZ or Hawaii]. Still unmarried with no children. 41.
7. Secretary Without Portfolio, Song Biming
Bio: Born in Hawaii to a prostitute mother who was impregnated by a sailor, had a remarkable and very unlikely arc to end up taking the civil service exam at 17 and going into the secret police (the "Golden Eye"), getting sent back to Hawaii after a few years to run the secret police there after getting some promotions in China and having a superior try to screw him over, then did so well he got sent back to Nanjing from Hawaii to take over the Nanjing bureau and the city's regular police and guard, and then elevated by Cao Caihou upon his appointment to the Chancellery to head of the secret police (which traditionally carries the title of Secretary Without Portfolio). Having an affair with the Emperor. 28.
8. Crown Princess, Taiping (Zhao Lian)
Bio: Currently the heir to the throne, due to complicated sibling and child hierarchies and succession law for the previous and current emperors, close friends with her younger half-brother the Emperor, but more interested in politics than him (generally aligns with the Purples, since she gets along badly with the Empress Dowager as the daughter of a different wife of the previous emperor). Former lover of Zhu Heng (their affair has obviously ended, since he's been sent to the East Sea, but she doesn't yet know she's pregnant with his baby). Husband died of tuberculosis several years ago, but she has a 17-year-old son, Prince Chu (Zhao Bingwen) from the marriage. 38.

Relations: Wu maintains cordial relations with Fusang, which remains a trading partner and to some extent an ally despite now being independent. Deep trade ties and a more ambivalent legacy of imperial domination define its relationship with Tawatinsuyu, and Wu also has significant influence throughout Central America.

Within China, Wu is an economic and military rival of Yue (especially in Gan) and Min, and covets the weaker Min's colonies in particular (Yue's colonies are even more desired, but Yue's strength makes them a far more unlikely proposition). Previous wars with Yue and Min have foiled Wu attempts to become China's premier power, and have indeed set it back, reducing its empire and influence. At the moment, with Yue ascendant and controlling a huge swath of the South China Sea, direct conflict is not an option- even if Wu's land forces would be victorious, Yue and Min fleets could wreak havoc with Wu shipping and the economy, and seize many far-flung imperial outposts before a ground campaign could be successfully concluded. Thus, overt aggression and direct conflict with Yue is not a viable option for the time being.

Despite this, Wu continues to work against Yue interests indirectly- it has aligned itself with and provides support to Johore, and also offers some support to Taungoo, Lan Xang, and the Khmer to help keep the South China Sea from being completely turned into a Yue lake. Wu has little in the way of a deep relationship with any European powers, besides friction with

However, it maintains friendlier relations with the states to its north (especially Ming, which is strongly aligned towards Wu), and backs Southern Zhou and the Hubei Commandery as bulwarks against the menace of Qian expansion. Wu also maintains trade relations with the great powers of the East China Sea (Yamato and Joseon), though there is occasionally friction with Yamato over Wu control of the Ryukyu islands.

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: They mostly speak Wu Chinese (which itself is kinda known for not being mutually intelligible among different subgroups, so that's not that helpful). Mostly Wu, a good helping of other South Chinese peoples (Ming, Gan, Min, Zhou, Hubei, Yue, and Qi are the biggest ones), some Japanese and Koreans and North Chinese, maybe even a few Mongols, small Polynesian, Maori, and Salish minorities along with the occasional Arab, Indian, or European
Religion: Varied- Chinese ancestor worship/folk animism is big, but Buddhism imported from Southeast Asia and Japan has also gained a sizable following, with some leading Buddhist monasteries/sects holding political and commercial power in their own right. Small Christian and Muslim minorities exist (mainly in Hangzhou and Shanghai).
Ethnicity: Mostly Han, I guess?
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Wu Chinese, Fusangese
Other Cultures: Yue/Min and other Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Khmer, Vietnamese, Hmong, Javanese, Malay, Thai, Burmese, Polynesian & Hawaiian, Maori, Salish & Haida, Mesoamerican, Andean, New Guinean, Mongol, Manchu, Indian
Military Info
Army: The Wu army is a large, efficient professional fighting force that stands at 210,000 men in peacetime, equipped with the latest and greatest military technology. In particular, the Wu army's artillerymen are notably skilled, and the army has a large artillery park equipped with some of the finest weapons in the world, routinely implementing innovations in cannon and rocket designs. Effective personal firearms are also universal in the Wu army, and recently breech-loading rifles have begun to be issued (for the time being, only elite units are equipped with these weapons).

Being a soldier is regarded as an honorable profession, and for those who show merit, becoming an officer and rising through the ranks can also be a path to political power (though many are divided on whether some high-ranking officers owe their rank more to their fortune and patronage than their ability).

In addition to the professional forces, who form the backbone of the Wu army, men between 18 and 60 are given a year's training in the military's reserve force when they turn 18, followed by semi-annual or annual training periods of a few weeks, and there is an entire government agency, the Mobilization Directorate, responsible for coordinating the call-ups of reserve units and the maintenance of the armories that supply them. Reserve units are usually only called up in wartime, but occasionally individual units will be mobilized for a few weeks or months during peacetime if the army requires it. They are generally led by retired soldiers or police, and are not as well equipped or well trained as regular units.
Navy: While the Wu army is probably the best in China, the Wu navy is not as powerful, advanced, or capable as that of Yue or Min. The bulk of the navy's personnel are actually marines, who help man its many coastal and riverine craft on the Wu mainland. These are generally small craft, often powered by paddle-wheels, and vary in construction. A smaller number are heavily armored and carry a few heavy cannons, intended to protect the coast from enemy warships. Most of the craft are unarmored or only lightly armored, and either lightly armed, unarmed, or armed with larger numbers of light guns, like breech-loading swivel guns, intended to transport troops, support landings, and suppress, kill, or capture lightly armed pirates and smugglers.

The oceangoing elements of the Wu fleet are mainly focused on long-range patrol squadrons of sailing junks. These craft patrol the East China Sea and the Pacific to fend off pirates, keeping shipping lanes safe and occasionally escorting military convoys or helping to transport troops. These vessels typically have relatively light armament, comparable to frigates or sloops in the European navies.

Wu's heavy oceangoing capital ships are relatively few in number at two dozen, with a quarter of those being stationed at various points across the Pacific. Typically three will be stationed at Pearl Harbor and three will be stationed Tamaki (Auckland- Maori name has been adopted by the Chinese). The remainder are based in Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: Wu's economy rests on the cornerstone of world trade. The country's extensive trade relations and networks in the New World give it access to critical raw materials, while its Pacific empire makes it possible for these goods to be shipped in a cost-effective manner back to China (with the ports of Shanghai and Hangzhou being by far the largest in the country). The economy is heavily industrialized, with Nanjing, Hangzhou, and to a lesser extent Shanghai being its main centers. Wu has a rudimentary rail network, but canal and river boats and barges remain central to commercial transport.
Goals:
-Touch/lick the doughnut that is Africa (sail around the Pacific to get to Southwest Africa, perhaps? Cut thru Panama and the Caribbean to the West? Go thru Lake Yue South China Sea to the East?)
-Reassert influence in the Western Hemisphere (Mesoamerican canal is a pipe dream, but re-establishing influence in the Andes and subtly getting more up in Fusang, the Plains, and Central America's business and maybe getting a Panamanian concession to project into the Caribbean and Atlantic is not)
-Contain Qian (halt its expansion into China and destabilize it, especially out in Central Asia and on the steppe)
-Contain Yue (prevent the South China Sea from turning into a Yue lake, thwart Yue's aims in China, destabilize its colonies, et cetera)
-Destabilize Min (fuck w/political establishment, sow problems between Yue and Min, maybe try to incite against Gan or even negotiate w/Japan?)
-avoid direct confrontation with Yue or Qian (use proxies/build coalitions- for Qian: N. Zhou, S. Zhou, and Hubei + negotiations with Qi, Dali, Joseon, Russia, & Persia, and for Yue: Dali, Johore, Taungoo, Khmer, Lan Xang & possibly Merina/Zhunzu + negotiations with Britain)

History:
idk yet

Following the fall of the Tang dynasty, the territory that is now Wu fell to various warlords, before coming under the control of the Song dynasty. It prospered during this time, becoming a wealthy heartland for China, and the Song capital moved to Hangzhou after the Jin-Song Wars left the North China Plain under Jurchen control. During the war with the Mongols, when the enemy were advancing onto the Yangtze Delta, a Song general stabbed the dynasty in the back and overthrew the last Song emperor in a palace coup (which led to the deaths of all male Song heirs), surrendering to the Mongols. After a brief parade through Hangzhou and some light pillaging, the Mongol army headed off, and most of what is now Wu was left largely unmolested and under the control of the general. As the brief Yuan dynasty began to collapse, the general was assassinated by the well-organized resistance movement in the area, and the rebel commander Xi Lianwei led his own forces to take control of Hangzhou and then other major cities. He then declared the Wu dynasty, marrying a surviving Song princess and moving the capital inland to Jiangning, which was renamed Nanjing.

The 1200s and 1300s saw chaotic fighting with surrounding warlords to define the rough boundaries of the Wu state and to finish off the Mongols in conjunction with other Chinese forces, as well as major efforts to rebuild infrastructure that had been neglected or destroyed under the Yuan and in the last years of the Song. The empire's system of canals was expanded during this time, and its road network saw significant growth and improvement, while the cities of Hangzhou and Nanjing both had major new construction of fortifications. The new dynasty established relations with other consolidated Chinese states such as Yue and Qi, and also with more distant nations in the East Indies and Southeast Asia. Wu also began establishing a maritime trading empire with a few scattered outposts in the Ryukyus, Taiwan, the Philippines, and the more sparsely-populated eastern regions of the East Indies.

Into the 1400s, Wu was beginning to grow in power as industry slowly developed, emerging as one of China's great powers, but failing in the 1430s in an effort to conquer the North China Plain as part of an effort to re-unify the country (in part thanks to unprecedented flooding of the Yellow River). Min settlers increasingly came into conflict with Wu merchant outposts on Taiwan. Near the end of the century, the discovery of the Americas by a Qi explorer in the pay of the Wu court sparked enormous interest, and Wu began major investments in exploring the Pacific and North America into the 1500s.

Wu explorers and conquerors ranged along the whole west coast of North America, establishing dominance over the native peoples of the region (especially the peoples of the Salish Sea and the Inside Passage), and also encountered Tawatinsuyu, forcing it to become a tributary state of Wu and extracting huge quantities of gold and silver from Andean mines. Hawaii (Tanxiangdao) was conquered as a convenient stopover point for ships transiting the Pacific, and colonists began to flow from crowded mainland China to Fusang. In addition, Wu fleets conquered hundreds of smaller islands through the South Pacific, most notably subjugating the Maoris of New Zealand (Nanyuguo), where Wu colonists would also settle.

Throughout the latter half of the 1600s and well into the 1700s, Wu and Yue engaged in the destructive Wu-Yue Wars, which lasted the better part of the century and took place at roughly the same time as the great early expansion of Qian. The back-and-forth of these wars ultimately saw Wu's ambitions of southern conquest thwarted and Yue's control of the East Indies cemented. Min and Gan were able to survive and preserve themselves by carefully switching sides at opportune moments, and Min and Yue pushed Wu presence out of the South China Sea entirely. The vast expense of the wars and the repeated destruction of large Wu fleets also eventually weakened Wu's hold on Fusang, which became independent in 1776 following several small uprisings and Nanjing's infamous Withdrawal Declaration, pulling troops and ships out of the Americas. The withdrawal of Wu presence from the Americas coincided with military defeats at the hands of Yue and Min, and these two factors combined to cause significant internal unrest in Wu towards the end of the 18th century. These wars essentially marked the eclipse of Wu by Yue as China's premier power.

The country eventually recovered, with kongsi conglomerates gaining greater sway at court in response to the court and the monarchy's failures and generally becoming voices for peace and expanding trade. The Assembly of Notables has also grown in power since the end of the Wu-Yue Wars, most notably marked when, in 1804, the Advisory Secretary successfully demanded that the Emperor dismiss his Chancellor over a scandal. Since the end of the Wu-Yue Wars and the recovery of the country, Wu has also gradually repaired ties with Fusang, while officially respecting its independence, and began to regain some influence in the Western Hemisphere. Wu has also supported the northern Chinese states against Qian encroachment. Nonetheless, Wu's diminished position on the world stage means it must work more behind the scenes against its enemies rather than directly confronting them, a reality that has further nurtured the power of the Golden Eye and the bureaucracy's foreign service.

Yay for free trade, another step towards the Hansa international trade network, now all I need is at least a small trading colony somewhere in Asia and I will be happy, however unlikely that will be.

If you're looking for free trade, Bohemia may be wiling to work with you on that. Bohemia is a very free market and free trade place, and if you could let us use your trade ports, that would also be great!

Dunno in any case, you are a lot further north than both of them, though you have some small colonies, I imagine your main relations would be closer neighbours. such as Joseon, Qian (that one should be scary), or the orange to the south of you

Very WIP.

Generic Info
Nation Name: Kingdom of Hellas | Vasíleio tis Elládas | Βασίλειο της Ελλάς | Greece | Ἑλλάς
Symbols: Flag. CoA.
Location: 38
Population: 3,219,000
Capital City: Athens

Government Info
Government Type: Constitutional Parliamentary Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The King of Hellas fills the role of head of state and has the sole authority to appoint and dismiss the Archon. Either the King or the Archon can present a bill to the Boule, which is popularly elected by all men over the age of 20. The Boule, along with the Areopagus, a hereditary body formed from the nobility of Greece excluding the royal family, must approve all bills for them to pass into law and declarations of war. The Archon, along with two other Junior Archon, one of whom is named by the Boule, the by from the Areopagus, may veto any bill that the King attempts to pass.
Ideology: Conservatism, nationalism, monarchism, revanchism, Megali Idea
Leader/s: Toumazos Cochrane, King of the Hellenes, 10th Earl of Dundonald, 1st Marquess of Atacama, Lord High Admiral of the Royal Hellenic Navy, Vice Admiral of the Chilean Navy (honorary rank)
Relations: The Kingdom of Hellas enjoys good relations with most of Europe, having not had the time to acquire bad blood with any states and indeed having been supported in its independence war by many of them. Persia is viewed as an ally of convenience against the Turks, while everything further afield is irrelevant, although the King personally is liked in Chile, Argentina and Colombia due to his assistance in their wars of independence.

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: Greeks are a hardy and extremely nationalistic lot; after centuries under the Ottoman Empire, their newfound freedom and nation
Religion: The vast majority are Orthodox Christians.
Ethnicity: Greek is the largest ethnicity, with Bulgarians forming a notable majority.
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Greek
Other Cultures: Bulgarian

Military Info
Army: 35,000. Although small, the Greek Army is extremely experienced from its wars against the Ottomans and motivated by the desire to see the Megali Idea achieved.
Navy: 16 ships of the line, 27 smaller ships (frigates/brigs/sloops). The Greek Navy in many ways owes its position to the King of the Hellenes, Toumazos Cochrane, one of the best naval commanders of the current era.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: The Greek economy is highly agrarian/artisan-based; the Industrial Revolution has yet to take off in any way whatsoever. A single small railway, between the port of Piraeus and Athens, mainly used to bring goods inland, does exist however.
Goals: Achieve the Megali Idea. Educate South Slavs about why they are impossible and they're just confused Illyrians and Thracians which are just Greeks who happen to live outside of Hellas proper, just like the Ionian Greeks or the Cappadocian Greeks.
History: Greek history itself only begins with the Hellenic Revolution of 1822, and the following Independence War until 1833. Before 1822, Greece was under the rule of the Ottomans, another province in their empire, conquered in the years after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. In the years after the fall of Byzantium, some Greeks became bandits, known as klephts, who fought the Ottomans in the mountainous regions of Greece for some time afterwards. Although little more than bandits, klephts could be suggested to have kept the idea of an independent Greece alive. Over the 1700s lands previously held by the Sultan were given out as hereditary estates, ending the status of many Greeks as freemen and effectively turning them into serfs. The Napoleonic Wars destabilised the Republic of Venice, and Greeks on both the Ionian Islands and Crete rose up in revolt, seeking to establish their own independent states as the first step on a road to an independent Greece in 1815 after the Congress of Vienna returned the islands to Venice.

Although Venice crushed the uprising, the ringleaders escaped to mainland Greece or the Aegean Islands, where they began to agitate for an uprising against the Ottomans.

At this point, Thomas Cochrane must be mentioned. A British aristocrat who served first in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars until he resigned his commission in 1809 to focus on domestic politics; however, his failure to achieve his aims of parliamentary reform, along with his lack of allies over his criticism of the conduct of the Napoleonic Wars and corruption within the Navy led to him retiring from British domestic politics after his expulsion from Parliament over his involvement in the Great Stock Exchange Fraud of 1814. He traveled to Brazil and fought in the wars of independence of Chile and Argentina against the French, being named the first Vice-Admiral of Chile for his conduct in that war. After the conclusion of those wars he fought with the Colombian Navy in the Colombian Revolution of 1819-1821, fighting alongside Simon Bolivar and absorbing many of his political ideas. In 1821, with the end of the Colombian Revolution, Cochrane returned to England briefly before the Greek revolutionaries, having heard of his service in South America, approached him with an offer to lead the Greek Navy in a war of independence against the Ottomans. Cochrane agreed, and traveled to Greece in 1821.

He spent the rest of 1821 as a tourist, learning Greek, travelling to the ancient sites of the Parthenon, Sparta and Mount Olympus while meeting with local revolutionaries and those who had fled from the Ionian Islands or Crete after the attempted uprisings there. After mainland Greece, Cochrane traveled the Aegean Islands, meeting those who would later form the core of his navy. He got into contact with those he remembered from his wars in South America and a few remaining political contacts in the UK, asking for their assistance in the coming war.

The revolt of 1822 was meant to be a short affair; it wasn't. Alexander Ypsilantis and his Sacred Band, formed from Greeks in Moldavia, Wallachia and Odessa, invaded Wallachia from the Commonwealth, calling on all 'Christians of the Danube' to rise up against the Ottomans. The Prince of Wallachia declares his support for the revolt, and Ypsilantis and his army march southwards to seize Brăila while Theodoros Kolokotronis, having unified and trained several bands of klephts into something resembling a modern army rose up in the Peloponnese. Demetrios Ypsilantis took the fortress of Larissa from the Ottomans while Athanasios Diakos led an uprising in Central Greece, taking Thebes. Cochrane spent the first year on the island of Hydra, forming the Greek Navy, which primarily used fireships and the experienced seafarers of the Aegean Islands to achieve several notable victories over the Ottoman Navy early in the war.

By the end of the year, despite several defeats including the Sacred Band being forced to withdraw into Macedonia after a defeat at Brăila by the Ottoman Army and at Alamana, the victory of Odysseas Androutsos at Gravia and the martyrdom of Athanasios Diakos inspired the revolution further, in addition to the fall of Athens in June. Throughout 1823 and 1824 most of the battles were naval as the Ottoman Navy attempted to reinforce the Aegean Islands, attempts that were continually frustrated by Cochrane's navy and led to many of the islands being taken by the end of that year. The joining of the Dual Kingdom into the war in 1824, alongside the revolt of Albania, saw the balance of the war shift in favour of Greece.

Thessaloniki fell in 1826, and the Sacred Band entered Bulgaria in 1827 but had limited success. There was some debate within the Greek revolutionaries about whether to push on to Constantinople; the Albanians has achieved their independence and occupied Northern Epirus, which many claimed as rightfully Greek, while the Bulgarians appeared to be unlikely to launch a revolt of their own accord. An Ottoman counter-offensive in 1828-29 forced the Greek armies back to Central Greece, cutting off the Sacred Band in Macedonia. The Sacred Band held its own against the Ottomans until 1832, aided by probing offensives against Ottoman armies further south and naval raids on the Asian ports of the Ottomans, and were able to fight their way back to Central Greece in 1833 although Macedonia was lost.

By 1833, under pressure from the Commonwealth, Dual Kingdom and United Kingdom both sides agreed to peace on the terms of status quo uti possidetis in the Treaty of Samos. The forces behind Greek independence, having not organised a formal civilian government until this point, convened the Convention of Athens, at which Thomas Cochrane, taking the name Toumazos Cochrane was named as the first King of the Hellenes as a candidate acceptable to most great powers, having become extremely hellenised during his years fighting there.

Greece spent the next 6 years repairing and most importantly rearming in preparation for a second war against the Ottomans while Cochrane, with his ideas of democracy inspired by his time in the British Parliament and South America, set up a system of government modeled loosely after what Boliviar envisioned. The Second Ottoman-Greek War of 1839-1843 was incited by an uprising in Thessaloniki. The reorganised Greek Army and Navy recaptured much of central Greece in 1839-1840, with Thessaloniki being liberated in 1841 after Cochrane defeated an Ottoman fleet sent to relieve the city. The Sacred Band marched again into Macedonia and then Bulgaria in 1842 while Greek armies marched on to the Évros river, but an Ottoman victory at the Évros and great power intervention in 1843 again saw a second peace signed at Samos.

In the years since, Greece has prepared for a Third Ottoman-Greek War, as the Megali Idea has not yet been achieved and only then can Northern Epirus, the Ionian Islands, Crete and Cyprus be returned to Greece proper once the Great Enemy has been defeated.
