It has been 35 years since the United States of America lived up to this quote and eventually capitulated. Despite losing several states in the South, the USA would go on to annex massive chunks of land in North America and become one of the largest empires to ever exist in North America. Yet, it was this overextension, coupled with corruption from the inside, caused it to break up into several countries. Countries that existed before the collapse now find new competition and allies. West of the Rio Grande river, small, newly formed countries work to develop themselves as rising powers. With tensions rising, it won't be long until war determines the dominant powers of North America.

In 1832, the United States of America was plagued with the Nullification Crisis. After a hefty tariff was put on the southern states, the question of state’s rights, including the right to nullify laws, become an intense debate. The outcry from the alleged violation of state’s rights was so great that the state of South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union. In response, Andrew Jackson threatened to raze South Carolina and hang the politicians from the highest tree he could find. Not wanting to betray his state, John C. Calhoun stepped down as Vice President.

Unfortunately for Andrew Jackson, he would never get to put down a separatist movement, as he would be assassinated. In early 1833, Andrew Jackson was shot in the head by a radical sectionalist. With no vice president he was replaced by Andrew Stevenson, whose bumbled attempts to keep the union together would worsen it. With the intimidating figure of Andrew Jackson gone, South Carolina did what was thought to be a shallow threat, and seceded. Secession had been more popular in this South, and the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida territory seceded to form the Confederation of the Mississippi. The state governments of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Kentucky attempted to secede, but they were deposed by the federal government. The states of Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware would meet the same fate out of fear by the federal government that they would secede as well. This led to widespread rioting and the formation of several paramilitary groups, causing the remaining slave states to be placed under martial law.

This coupled with intensified immigration riots, made the USA unprepared to deal with the Confederation. In the Treaty of Charleston(1833), the USA gave de facto recognition to the newly formed country so that it could deal with its intense internal problems. The treaty also granted the USA uncontested control over the Mississippi River. From there, the USA and COM would be at peace. Though the USA remained alive, this would lead to the idea that separatism worked, and spark an irredentist movement that would eventually lead to the collapse of the Union.

From the ashes of an embarrassed country, rose an abolitionist nationalist party in 1836 under Huey Arthur. He promised to make America the largest empire ever seen in the New World and to bring America into a golden age of imperialism, and the people ate it up. Despite opposition from slave states, who now had very little power, he successfully ran for president. After just two months with him in office, the USA declared war on Mexico and beat them down with help from the Republic of Texas, which was supplied with weapons, supplies, and reinforcements by the Confederation during their wars of independence.

In just over a year, the USA had Mexico on her knees, and though President Arthur had promised that all of Mexico would become American territory, it was unknown what would be done about that in regards to the Missouri compromise and the fact that no one would want predominantly Spanish-speaking states in the Union. In response, two acts were passed. With the Southern states already too weak to pass any significant laws, the Huey Regulation act was passed in 1838. It prohibited the spread of slavery in other states and made sure that no other state would have slaves. Meanwhile, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo made it clear that the territories gained from Mexico would never become states until they had a white, English-speaking majority. Though criticized as being potentially unconstitutional, these criticisms were ignored due to mass popularity and clever legal defence. From now on, the constitution that was once considered the word of God would be treated as nothing more than pieces of paper.

From the 1840s and onwards, the USA would continue to slide towards more authoritarian and undemocratic policies as it expanded into the Federal Republic of Central America and obtained much of the Caribbean by force, frequently trampling on human rights and ignoring states rights in favor of a more centralized government. But the tolerance of the heavily nationalistic populace would be stretched too far when in 1855, President Douglas Long made himself a de facto dictator and designated almost all government functions to himself. In the end, it was this that would bring down the United States of America.

In 1860, President Long was assassinated. The USA fell into chaos as a result of the power vacuum, with various factions vying for independence or control of the United States of America. The Second American Civil War would end in 1865, with the USA as we know it having been replaced by newly birthed countries. From this point onward, the United States of America would be nothing but a nationalistic dream of an era long gone.

Following the collapse of the USA, the people of the Confederation were filled with joy. They no longer had to live with the threat of Uncle Sam breathing down their necks with the possibility of invasion. Instead, they could focus on annexing land they had once claimed long ago and they could also try to gain a sphere of influence in these new countries. However, this dream was cut short when Virginia was absorbed by a successor state to the USA. Meanwhile, many of the nations that emerged from the USA were simply disinterested in alliances with the Confederation. They quickly found an enemy in the American imposter, and fortified their Virginian border.

However, not all has been bad for the Confederation. Though almost all of the former slave states formed new countries, Kentucky's state goverment successfully lobbied to join the Confederation. Their plan to industrialize central Alabama and regions of Tenneseee and North Carolina worked out well, and they have weaned themselves off of a purely agricultural economy, even if it is still the predominant economic sector. Civil rights are far from astounding, however, there are very slowly improving. As of now, they hope to take lands such as Arkansas and Louisiana with the help of Texas, and eventually wage a crusade against the American imposter up North.

The American Union State (Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri) was carved out of the rebellious states during the American Civil War by the United States military, and it is currently ruled by General "Swords" Lee, who wishes to continue the autocratic form of government seen in the last USA.

The Federal Republic of Central America (Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama) was formed as a federal union in order to protect the sovreignity of its member states. It has its issues, but it's a fairly stable democracy run by Rafael Castro.

Montana-Wyoming is a tiny, irrelevant democracy run by President Jim Loch.

You can take control of an NPC at any time, but you can't change their ideology without doing so ICly with a good reason.

History: During the secessionist crisis, multiple paramilitary groups were founded in the Northeast of the United states, these groups were small and garnered little support. However, after a few years of small squirmiest many of these small groups united to form the group known as the "Men of New England", this group was much more vocal and active in it's quest for independence of the New England states. In 1878, the group attacked Boston, blowing up government ships and capturing the government of Massachusetts as hostages. The MNE declared a new "New English Republic", word of this got out quickly and the people of New England began to riot against the government. In order, Rhode Island, Main, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut all declared their own republics. These small states united only 2 months later and formally became the "New English Republic". In 1894 the state went from a loose confederation to a federalized republic with the chancellor going from a democratically elected individual with a term limit to a position chosen by parliament, and can be replaced any time the democratically elected congress wills it.

When the first cracks in the American dream was subtly shown, many of the richest plutocrats and families were the first ones to take notice. Several of the rich either bolted to Asia and Europe while others desperately tried to seal the cracks with as much money and effort but to no avail. And when they saw that nothing could be done to lift the sinking ship, they had deviced a plan. The "Northern Plan" as they would call it, and the plan entails that once chaos overtakes the USA and fractures it into lesser forms, many of the richest magnates and families would flee north to Nunavut to establish their own utopian and capitalist nation.

And it did happen. On 1860, civil war reigns over what was once thought to be the truest American dream. This is when the "Northern Plan" was put into action. Many of the plutocratic families along with a good chunk of North America's greatest and richest magnates has evacuated to Nunavut. There they establish their own nation built not upon the democratic ideals that the old America so dreamed of, but upon the pillars of plutocracy, money and the most enigmatic form of capitalism. And thus the golden empire, or "confederation" as it is officially called, was born.

Unlike most other nations in the world, the Confederation is not actively seeking what a normal country would seek like lands and glory. Instead they focused their efforts on advancing the technological advancement of their nation along with their riches, increasing the money and making the nation an unofficial global leader of economics and wealth in the known world. The only time that they would wage war for land however was the Danish-Nunavutian War. Wherein Denmark, which got complete hold of Greenland again, was declared upon by the Nunavuts under the supervision of the Council of Magnates. The Confederation only acquired the north-western parts of Greenland before suing for peace. To which the Danish reluctantly accepts. And as it turns out, the goal of the war was to acquire precious oilfields and land for station placements located in Greenland. As well as the additional aesthetic side-rewards of another fancy addition to the Confederation's name.

History: Socialism and communism were entirely new things introduced to the United Stated, though this time socialism was introduced much earlier than it had historically (the late 1870s but in this the late 1830s). The socialists during the secessionist crisis were worried that with the rise of the nationalist party they would be suppressed heavily in the name of "keeping the country safe". A group of Utopian socialists and few other socialists and proto-communists organized into the Brotherhood of the Co-operative Commonwealth whose goal was to establish a socialist colony somewhere within the United States to continue the spread of Socialism with safety, they chose the territories of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon as the perfect places to safely colonize, so in the early 1840s and onward mass migration of socialists westward began

In 1853 two years before President Long declared himself dictator of the American States the territories that were colonized became socialist havens, the equality colonies first being small spread largely through the territory even as much as being able to elect a governor who would be sympathetic to their cause. For the next two years it was relatively peaceful for the Brotherhood of the Co-operative Commonwealth who would become the largest socialist organization within the territories. After President Long declared himself dictator and was evidently assassinated the Utopian Socialists once again worried for their safety, they agreed they couldn't stay with United States any longer. Using their ties to the Governor the managed to get the territories to declare independence into the Republic of Washington though with the large population of socialists that have migrated westward and grown the Socialist Party of Washington quickly took power and transformed the nation into their vision of a Socialist Utopia.

Afterward after the civil war mostly during the time of the early 1890s many decades after the communist manifesto had been published by Marx saw a large increase of known communists within the Republic of Washington, thus leading to the crisis of 1894 between the Utopian Socialists and the Proto-Council Communists who after what would be 5 long years of diplomatic maneuvers and skirmishes between militias would lead in a compromise with a Council Communist victory. The Commune of Cascadia was created from the ashes of the Republic of Washington with the communists in charge who quickly gave the workers complete control of all factories and farms, leaving the slow socializing of them by the Utopian Socialists behind. The fire between the two still burns within their hearts, but will this fire burn them first? Or will the fire surrounding then leave them charred before they even know it.
