The IC Thread:

The Titan Affliction: Between a Rock and a Vulture
People are beginning to discover and develop superhuman powers. It is only a matter of time before the world knows the meta-humans exist. In the shadows enemies lurk who see them as opportunities or threats but not people at all...

On the 1st of May 2019, something strange happened in the city of Seattle. For most residents of the city nothing much changed. A few scientists detected an unusual and inexplainable surge of radiation, though the dose appeared to be harmless and everyone more-or-less forgot about it.

The radiation was not harmless. In a small number of individuals, it activated something inside them, changing their DNA and turning them into a ticking time-bomb. One-by-one, in moments of stress or danger, these individuals have been ‘activating’, changing from a normal person into something else; Some call them mutants, others meta-humans, the Government agencies investigating it regard the mutation as a disease and have named it ‘The Titan Affliction’. While most are indistinguishable from normal humans on the surface, they can do extraordinary things.

The population doesn’t believe in them, the Government denies they exist and the mainstream media ignores stories about them, dismissing those who talk about them as unreliable. But all of that is changing. One meta-human, known in the media as ‘Blur’ (and to certain Government agencies as ‘Mutant Zero’) has been creating waves, embarking on a brazen crime-wave across the city which has put several police and security guards in the hospital.

Which is where you come in. Perhaps you are a meta-human, recently activated by some event in your life? Or maybe you haven’t developed powers but you can see what is going on and want to do something about it? Whatever the case, Seattle is changing and Blur is becoming more dangerous every day…

OOC Foreword

Hi folks and welcome to the ‘The Titan Affliction’, a thread created by Talion Union and me!

The board is rather cluttered with super RPs at the moment, but in most of them you jump in as an established super into a world that knows you are real and has ways of dealing with that. The Titan Affliction is going to be different. You have just gained your powers and the general public think of you as something from a comic book; nobody considers you might be real yet. Hero or villain, this is your origin story.

That being said, you don’t have to be a meta-human. Maybe you are some kind of elite fighter, unpowered but impressive, who, for whatever reason gets dragged into the escalating storm of violence on the streets of Seattle.

This RP will be semi-sandbox; Your character can go out and do whatever they want. You can form your own teams, acquire your own nemesis, rob a bank, save a baby, investigate what caused the titan affliction or try to put a stop to Blur. There will be a larger story advancing in the thread though, that will affect you.

Rules

General Rules:
  • Talion Union and I are the Co-OPs of this thread. There is no difference in authority.
  • All the normal forum stuff… please refrain from Godmodding, Metagaming, short posts that people can’t respond to and keep the thread PG-13.
  • Do not write someone taking a hit for them. This is the most common form of Godmodding and is very irritating for other writers, especially those who are writing characters who are supposed to have good senses/reflexes/move fast.
  • Keep everything polite and calm on the OOC. We will have zero tolerance for name calling. This is not a playground.
  • We would like you to be active enough to make a post every 2-3 days, at least. That being said we know people have lives. If you are going to be inactive for a spell, hop on to the OOC and let us know – it takes less than a minute to write ‘sorry folks, won’t be able to post until Monday’.
  • If you get stuck in an interaction with an inactive writer and there has been no peep out of them in three days, post on here and send them a Tgram to let them know you are waiting. If they still haven’t responded within 24 hours, feel free to write a post that resolves the situation and lets your character move on to another scene.

Thread Rules:
This is a street level RP (for now at least). In order to keep it that way there are a few rules we need to set out:
  • Background: In order to maintain the mythos of this thread please don’t write immortal vampires or 10,000 year old sorcerers. You received your powers during the event, or you are an extraordinary unpowered individual.
  • Power levels: In order to keep everything balanced we would ask that you create a character who would need to consider their options if facing a team of a dozen or so well-armed henchmen. This should be a challenging situation, not one you waltz through without breaking a sweat. Other than that, be as creative as you like! If we think something in an app is excessive we will tell you and suggest what to change it.
  • More powerful characters: There will be the occasional character who is more powerful than you, run as a challenging opponent by one of the Co-OPs. Blur is one of these. If you decide to tackle one of them you will need to use brains and teamwork.
  • Number of characters: Initially I would ask you to stick to two. We will increase this number when people have had an opportunity to develop their existing ones (probably a couple of weeks after launch).
  • The City: The city is the playground for our characters. Don’t destroy it in the IC!
  • The Police/Army: A lot of super-RPs treat these people as mindless mooks. They aren't - they are highly trained professionals. If you want to commit a crime, make sure you have an avenue of escape if you don't want to go down in a hail of gunfire.
  • Control of NPCs: Talion Union and I will write the posts for Government bodies etc. Feel free to write posts for friends of your characters though if you want to create sidekicks/an army of mooks please include this in your app.

And most importantly.... The application form!

It should go without saying but please delete the explanations (in brackets) when you make your application. We won't decline you if you leave it in, but it makes your app look very messy.

Here it is, spick and span, according to plan.

Character Description
    Name:Eric Rankin
    Aliases: N/A
    Gender: Male
    Age: 28
    Apperance:
    Image

Motivations
Goals: Finding the man that nearly killed him, mangled his body, and forced him into being an inhuman machine. Then, killing him.
    Fears: Disability, EMPs, and death.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Powers : Enhanced speed and ability, superhuman strength and reflexes. 85% artificial parts, including bionic replacement limbs, fortified skeletal structure, and enha. nced, synthetic organs (lungs that filters out dangerous substances in the air, liver for faster and more effective detoxification and poison filtration, etc.).
Abilities: Knowledge of police protocol, investigation methods, interrogation tactics, and some training in krav maga.
Equipment: A pair of glock 34 pistols, hip and holstered, and a telescopic baton on the opposite hip.
Weaknesses: Impact freeze up. Erics Mechanical limbs lock up to compensate for heavy impacts, such as sufficiently heavy thrown objects and sufficiently powerful strikes, of super human strength. The healing abilities of the synthetic organs is very limited, and the bionic pieces require maintenance after stressful engagements.

Background:A former Seattle police officer, Eric was left near death during a run-in with a metahuman, his body mangled beyond all hope of recovery. Accepting a deal with a man from Futura-Tech, a large corporation looking into biomechanics, Eric was rebuilt from the ground up into a capable and dangerous cyborg, with the hope being that he would be the face of the companies plans in biomechanics.
Stressor: Eric did not receive any powers or abilities from his near death experience, but was rebuilt from the ground up as a cyborg. His abilities come from his augmentations and upgrades.

Funny... I thought I had reserved the second post. Looks like I didn't :P

For those who are interested, here is the app for Mutant Zero

Classified Agency Intelligence: Mutant Zero

Suspect Description
    Name: Unknown
Aliases: Mutant Zero. Known as ‘Blur’ in the Media.
    Gender: Female
Age: Unknown, suspected to be in her late twenties to early thirties.
Apperance: Caucasian. Average height (5'5''), slight build. Dark hair, hazel eyes. Wears a black utility jacket, leather trousers and a domino mask.

Motivations
    Goals: Appears to enjoy stealing.
    Fears: Unknown

Strengths and Weaknesses
Powers : Enhanced speed – Has been known to hit 270 miles per hour. It takes about 20 seconds for Mutant Zero to reach top speed.
Enhanced reflexes – Has the agility to move at top speed down a busy suburban street, but has been known to collide with unexpected objects.
Flexible build – Mutant Zero has been seen to be stunned after a collision, with a stationary object at high speeds. The collision, however, should have resulted in broken bones or, indeed, death, leading investigators to believe Mutant Zero’s body is able to absorb blunt force considerably better than the average person.
Abilities: Skilled martial artist, skilled acrobat, can pick a lock… but often relies on explosives.
Equipment: Usually carries two tonfas and a lockpick. Has access to semtex.
Weaknesses: Mutant Zero is fairly lightly built and not particularly strong. It is suspected Mutant Zero might struggle if grappled by a larger person with any form of combat training.

Background:
General: Mutant Zero’s crime spree began on 15 May with a household robbery. Since then they have made a fresh attack every two to three days, becoming increasingly brazen as time progressed. While the first few attacks were simple burglaries of wealthy families, they quickly escalated to the burglary of business premises and other guarded premises. Most recently, Mutant Zero succeeded in snatching a pearl necklace from the neck of the wearer while escorted by three security guards.

Several security guards and police officers have been seriously injured while attempting to apprehend the subject including one who suffered a broken collar bone during the necklace theft.
Mutant Zero is known to target the wealthiest citizens of Seattle. It is suspected that the attacks may be, in part, politically motivated.

The best physical description of Mutant Zero comes from Harriett Newton. Ms Newton was attending a party at which the Mutant committed a robbery. The Mutant fled the scene, pursued by security, exiting the building from a third storey window near where Ms Newton was standing. Ms Newton was the only person in that part of the building at the time. While helpful, Ms Newton’s description was made while under the influence of a considerable amount of alcohol. It was, furthermore, possibly embellished; she attempted to sell the story to the media. This Agency convinced all leading news sources not to run the story.
    Stressor: Unknown

So, I had a couple of ideas for characters.

1) (And this one's kind of dark for me) - An unemployed, recently homeless disgruntled man who discovers he has the ability to make people addicted to anything, and that he can give them immediate withdrawal symptoms while being immune to the addiction and harmful effects of drugs himself.

2) A guy who has a unique kind of internal power-based gas exoskeleton that deflects certain kinds of attacks and may corrode others. Problem is, he can only use his other abilities when his gas exoskeleton is being used...

3) Maybe someone who can teleport, with a few other interesting things thrown in...

I will give you my unsolicited opinion on these concepts!

1. I like number this concept. It is a powerful build but one with some very major weaknesses... mostly that someone suffering withdrawal symptoms will still be functioning, if in a somewhat diminished capacity. So were s/he to use their power on Blur, Blur would still be ridiculously dangerous and possibly more unstable than normal. Personally I think this would be an extremely fun build if you are looking to operate in a team, possibly a bit weak if solo.

2. I have to confess to being a bit confused by the idea of a gaseous exoskeleton. Do you mean surrounded in a bubble of gas?

3. Another good idea. Are you thinking of sort-of along the lines of Jumper (both the 2008 film and 1992 novel)? That would work well in this thread, I feel.

The gaseous exoskeleton idea I got from here. This baby here. Obviously, there would need to be some kind deflection with it or possibly a corrosive influence. I'd have to seriously think how that could be used.

As for the teleporter, I've never actually seen or read Jumper.

The addiction one, I'd like to beef up a little bit because he is pretty weak by himself...

I believe that madness can find more madness, and that every ounce of madness has a spark of truth. And truth, as you know, has a way of depressing people who don't want to find it.

No one is 100% honest... We all keep 20% of the truth from the world, to protect ourselves & sometimes others.

Also... I don't think the addiction guy concept is underpowered, it just isn't a solo power. If you made them something like a former soldier and dragged in some weapon/combat skills you'd cover some of the shortcomings.

Ok. I think I'm done. We have a villain here for the RP.

-Talc

Character Description
    Name: Brendan Harwood
    Aliases: Icelord
    Gender: Male
    Age: 33
    Apperance:
    Image

Motivations
Goals: Unjustly fired a few months ago, Brendan has a desire to get even with his former prick of a boss. However, he has had other things on his mind since, namely, figuring out how to make it living on the street.
Fears: There is a good amount of anxiety Brendan has right now. He has seen all the horror stories he's heard about street living, such as muggings, drug deals and murders. Ultimately, he's terrified that he will never get back off the street. But the longer he's here, the less and less likely that seems. Over the past few months, he has been trying to piece things together, wondering what went wrong and how his life ended up here.

Strengths and Weaknesses
    Powers :
Now You're High- Brendan can make any single person addicted to something, whether or not they were before. Drugs? Alcohol? Exercise? Health foods? You name it, Brendan can make you feel it, crave it, need it, and do anything to get it. Lie to your friends? Sure. Commit violence? Not unheard of. Steal things? To be expected. This craving will become the most important focus of a person's reality, so that they will alter their plans they had in mind to get whatever it is they are now addicted to. It also makes the target less adept in combat, less focused, disoriented, confused and even at an higher (though altered) state of peace.

(TO BE DISCOVERED LATER IN THE RP) Overdose - The most extreme form of Brendan's powers, and one that takes several rounds to use. By sending more of his addictive inducement powers on a single target, Brendan can cause serious medical damage, paraylsis, stroke and even death. The target feels more of the effects of an illegal narcotic in his system, It's not one he likes to use, and won't unless he is pushed. Further, to get a person to a level of death takes the most amount of time to get, so it can't happen immediately.
Each round (or level) compounds off the others. So, if Brendan uses this ability for 3 rounds, the target suffers all effects from Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3. Each round takes around 10 minutes game time to create. Brandon creates this simply by mentally willing, and needs to be within 50 feet of his target.

Round 1 - Numbness, loss of mental control - The target will feel numb all over, cannot control his actions, will notice dangers and imminent harm (such as by fires) less quickly. Less alert, unable to focus, and will need to be led by friendly sources to safe places.
Round 2 - Partial paralysis of limbs. Movement can be recovered in a day or two.
Round 3 - Longer lasting paralysis of limbs. Movement will be restored after a week at the earliest, but most likely two weeks.
Round 4 - Internal organ damage. Long-term medical problems are now a reality, including partial organ shut-down. Possibilities for stroke and coma.
Round 5 - Death. The heart stops pumping. It is not that there are actual chemicals or narcotics in their system, but the biological systems act like there is to a large level.

Cold Turkey - Using this, Brendan can make a person feel like they are in immediate and awful withdrawal symptoms from a drug addiction. This works best after someone is already addicted to a drug - or if they feel like they are. Those who are addicted feel withdrawal symptoms to its full affect. But those who are not addicted to any drug or alcohol have this to a lesser extent. That is, not all the symptoms listed below will affect the target, though constant cravings always will. With Brendan's above power, he can make a person addicted, and then soon after, put them into immediate withdrawal symptoms. Brendan can also cause this ability even if an addict has recently used his addicting substance.
Withdrawal symptoms often include vomiting, dizziness, reduced eyesight, an inability to concentrate, anxiety, sweating, diarrhea, shaking, irritability, inability to sleep, and constant cravings.

Immunity to Drugs and Poisons - Brendan cannot suffer either addiction or harm from narcotics, and poisons and other toxins also have no affect on him.

    Abilities:
-A former army vet, Brendan had basic combat training.
-Brendan understands some Spanish and some Korean, even though he's nowhere fluent in speaking it.
-Not so much an ability, as it is that Brendan has picked up some street contacts - mostly dealers - some of whom have come to see Brendan as a valuable source of creating new income for them by using his powers to create new customers. His street contacts remain a source of underhand gossip and information that others would not normally be able to get.

    Equipment:
-Brendan still carries a large military grade combat knife, 12 inches, from his time in the service.
-Brendan has also acquired a few unlisted handguns, whose serial numbers have been filed off, with a small ammo supply he keeps hidden.
-Brendan has at least two burner phones that can be tossed without being traced back to him.

    Weaknesses:
-Brendan is of average strength and build, and will easily lose a wrestling match to someone of enhanced strength.
-Brendan has combat training due to his military service, but his abilities are comparable to others who have had normal combat training (e.g., police officers).
-Brendan is not a marksman, and is only slightly better than average at aimed shots.
-There are times when Brendan will get a lot of anxiety in a combat situation, bringing back bad memories of his time in Afghanistan in the service. He may freeze up,
or go out even more on the offensive, or something else perhaps. This will not happen in every combat, but it will be noticeable in some.

Background:
General: Born to a working class family, Brendan Harwood did the average in school and never really shined at anything. Graduating high school, he decided to go into the Armed forces rather than to college because book learning wasn't really his thing. Shipped to Fort Benning, Georgia, for Basic Training, Private 1st Class Brendan Harwood was deployed, first to Syria and then twice to Afghanistan. He saw combat in both places, and developed PTSD during his second Afghanistan term. Trying to cope with this, Brendan was involved in a driving accident that took two superior officers' lives. He was dishonorably discharged soon after and returned to the states.

Moving to Seattle, Brendan was still doing his best to cope with his combat stress that was taking over parts of his life. He took on a night security job with Boeing, which he held for about two and a half months. Due to his deficiencies, he was beginning to lose track of time sometimes. On one of these nights where Brendan wasn't quite mentally all there, Boeing was robbed of secret plans for a new military aircraft. The next day, he was quickly and harshly fired on the spot. Brendan claims that he was there and alert the whole time, that all of it was trumped up charges made to look him bad. This, however, is not quite the most accurate assessment. Brendan turned bitter and now is seeking revenge against his former employer. Especially since his former boss purposely tried to influence other employers from hiring him.

Without his paycheck, and with limited resources, Brendan was forced out into the streets. He learned to scrape by, and has so far survived. He would like to get off the streets, but each day is making it seem less likely. He has used his newly discovered abilities, partly to learn what he could do, partly to gain a favor or get some money. There are various street predators who have noticed Brendan as a potential golden goose - one who can make anyone become a drug addict, and hence, their prey. They nicknamed him "Icelord" - partly as a reference to the first time they noticed Brendan addicting a random person to the street drug "ice". Brendan didn't ask for these abilities, and before getting them, hadn't thought very highly of drug dealers. Now? He's becoming one of them. But there may be others who are seeking his abilities for their own agendas...

Stressor: Brendan Harwood, having been dishonorably discharged from the Army in January after two tours in Afghanistan and one in Syria, came back a changed man. Dealing with the post-war condition PTSD, Brendan was already primed for something to happen. But everything kicked into gear when he was harshly and surprisingly released from his security job at Boeing. After that time, he began to feel... different, and noticed he had the ability and the desire to get people hooked on various legal or illegal substances.

Goals: Hasn't got his powers yet so just trying to balance a social life, school, his hobbies and a weekend job.
Fears: Will be reluctant to use his powers at first, the swarm while mostly under his control especially when spread out over a larger area the natural instincts could kick in and he could hurt someone.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Powers : Has the ability to turn into thirty snakes, some are relatively harmless like grass snakes, some are venomous like cobras vipers and sea snakes and some are constrictors.
    Abilities: Good swimmer, learning parkour
    Equipment: Nothing notable
Weaknesses: Venerable to the cold in snake form.

Background:
General: Living up in Shoreline Thomas isn't overly notable, slightly introverted but still has a small circle of good friend, does decent in school.
Stressor: Hasn't happened yet, I might just be really stereotypical and have a snake bite him.

Oh! Question, is there any limitations on age?
Like...if I can provide a valid explanation, can I have a character be basically a child? I know you said nothing super old. I wouldn't reach into the 100s at all.
RP Types I Enjoy: God RPs (anything involving deities), alt history, medieval.

TAG! It's been a while since I've been in a Nation States RP and this seems like a good one to get back into role-playing. Quick question, I know NS has a pretty clear PG-13 rule, but how dark or adult is the overall tone going to be? I had an idea for a character who takes pleasure in and is empowered by enduring physical pain but suffers pseudo-withdrawal symptoms if he isn't routinely beaten. Naturally, he'd be known as "Gimp" and yes: he will be running around in a gimp suit (assuming that's permissible).

Curious.

As a slight clarification to the thread rule mentioning police and their professionalism, might want to say "highly trained professionals (most of the time)" considering stuff like this. :p

A little bird told me, "Go, Go! Socialise! Talk to those fine people! And then, KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM! Plunge your knife into their throats when they ain't lookin', and then burn 'em to the ground!"
Well that's silly, isn't it?

I find this strangely fascinating and somewhat amusing.

Can he control the snakes all at once, like a hive mind? Or is it more of that he becomes them and they just sort of do snake stuff? Second, if a snake gets smashed or killed does he lose any sort of body mass or strength?

Its more of a hive mind thing. As for dead snakes I don't want him to flop dead because the random green snake who was supposed to turn into his heart is dead but maybe he get hungry, dehydrated and exhausted if looses a few and might start to take serious damage if he looses more. Then he'd have to recover and rest if he wanted to turn back into the full thirty. I guess I'll see what the GM thinks of it.

In other words, something like this.
The Clockwork Circus - Welcome to a steampunk RP rife with crime, gangs, beggars, and starting off as the lowest of the low, in the lowest socio-economic place there is.

I don't think there is, but I generally stay away from writing children since they usually come out too adult sounding in their dialogue and actions.

If you want to have a go, though, feel free. As long as it follows the rules, I don't see why it wouldn't be permissible, though I'd say stay within the lower teens at minimum.

There can be adult themes, but not adult imagery. Death and sex are a natural part of the world, so they can be there, just not described in vivid detail.

I feel like with a character concept like that, you can easily find a middle ground between Penance (a Marvel character with the same basic idea) and full on gimp.

Someone with masochistic tendencies that gains more power when he's getting his ass handed to him is a neat idea, and I think it could do some interesting stuff.

I'll leave the final decision to the other co-OP, she's the smarter of the both of us.

Alright, cool. I just have to think of a super power, really. Heh.
I have a lot of choices, and not all of them are practical.

Tag.

Determining what super power to possess is rather... difficult.
