August 14th 2017 - "Check-In Day"
The Taylor Residence - 6:45 AM

Image

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Sophia Taylor was soundly asleep, with her sister Sydney similarly asleep in the bed next to her, when the alarm that was situated began blaring. The two sisters groan, almost simultaneously, before Sydney reached out to silence it. Today was the big day. The start of a new era. Yet, for Sydney, she was slightly perplexed over why Sophia had decided to start it so early. Sydney, glancing at the time on the clock, turned to look at Sophia with a confused look. "Ugh. Why so early?" Sophia leans up, rubs her eyes, and lets out a yawn prior to responding. "Sorry. I just wanted to start the day off with spending some more time in prayer." Sydney, in response, rolls her eyes, turns back around, and closes her eyes to get some more rest. Sophia grins, gets out of bed, and playfully tosses a pillow over at Sydney from her side of the room. "Leave me alone. I want to sleep." "Fine, more french toast for me." Sydney rolls back over to look at Sophia, giving an unamused facial expression."You're evil." Sophia reaches over, pats Sydney's shoulder, then turns to walk out of the bedroom to use the restroom. Sydney, after Sophia had left, sighs and rolls out from the bed. The two of them had, usually, made it a point to pray together each day. Sydney, as she was already awakened by her sister, decided to just get up and continue on with their tradition. Yet, she wasn't particularly enthused with the idea of waking up so early to do it considering they didn't even have to be at school until 9:00. Sean, who elected to sleep on the sofa, had already left with his older cousin, Daniel, to participate in morning football workouts. The only ones left were Sophia, Sydney, their cousin Emily, and their Aunt Madeline.

By 7:50, the two sisters had showered, eaten Sophia's delicious french toast recipe, and went out to the nearby beach in walking-distance to enjoy the beautiful sunrise, have their morning prayer together, and returned back to the house by 8:30. By then, their Aunt Madeline and their cousin Emily had also woken up - former ahead of a work day and the latter to join her Taylor cousins on their first day at Coastal Daytona Academy. Sophia, Sydney, and Sean were all scheduled to go on a tour together that day as well, being that they are newcomers to the school, and their uncle Carl promised he would make sure they were put into capable, and trusted, hands for the school tour. Following morning workouts, Coach Carl implored his most-stellar player to show his beloved cousins around school. As much as he wanted to have his kids be the ones to provide the campus tour, Daniel had to be at a defensive-unit team meeting following a collective poor showing at practice and Emily had a dentist appointment - both right after check-in. After the Taylors had gotten their schedules, their books, and discussed the rooming situation together, Sophia ultimately electing to live on-campus so that Sydney and Sean will have beds to sleep on at night, it was time to meet their tour-guide and for Sophia to meet her assigned room-mate: Audrey Harte. Audrey and Sophia had introduced in the school cafeteria, exchanged names, and whatever small-talk that ensued was interrupted by a blonde, athletic boy who had to ask a couple of teachers where the Taylor family was.

"Hey there!" Exclaimed an enthusiastic Eric Stevens, extending out a hand for a shake - starting with Sophia Taylor, then doing the same for Audrey Harte, and finally with the Taylor twins. "I'm Eric. Pleasure to meet you fine ladies." Eric said with a grin. "And you as well, of course, good sir." Eric added as he turned his attention to the lone Taylor male present. Audrey had a wily smirk on her face, eyes gauging the size of his muscles, and Sophia smirked when she saw her roommate's facial expression of immediate approval. "Can't wait to get started." Sophia said with the hope she would distract Eric from noticing Audrey blatantly checking him out. "Very well, let's get straight to it then!" The group meandered its' way through campus, with Eric stating the lunch options available to the students at Coastal Daytona Academy. "You will absolutely love the lunches this place has. Jimmy John's, if you're a sandwhich eater. Papa John's for the pizza lovers. Smoothie King. Chick-Fil-A. Chiptole and Panda Express, they alternate. Chiptole comes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Panda on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. There is also Zoe's Kitchen, if you're a healthy eater, and there is also the option of the usual cafeteria hotplate stuff too. There's something like 2,500 students here, so there's gotta be enough places to feed everyone at once." Sophia turned over to Audrey, nodding her head in approval. "Sweet!" Audrey boldly leaned toward Sophia and whispered into her ear. "I'm sorry, but I totally didn't hear a single word hot stuff just said." Sophia just shook her head and looked back to Eric who was pointing out the vendors that were within the school cafeteria, the others being spread out throughout campus to accommodate those who decide to buy lunch rather than bring it. The tour continued on, with Eric showing them around the classrooms, the library, the gymnasium, and finally ending at the dormitory.

"And, well, this it. I'm afraid our time together has come to a close." Eric said with a grin as he pointed to their particular room. "Aww." Sophia said, frowning slightly in response. "I hope you have enjoyed your time with the Stevens Tour Group, ladies and gentlemen.""Of course, it was fun. Thanks!" Sophia said, while Audrey was slouched against the wall and attempting to get a good look at Eric's butt. "I'm happy to hear it! Well hey, listen. If you girls would like, I would be happy to show you around town too! Lots of things to see and to do!" Sophia looked over to Audrey, the latter quickly shouting out her response almost before Eric was able to finish. "Dude, that would be so sick! Heck yeah!" Eric turned to look over at Audrey, chuckling at her enthusiasm, before turning to look back at Sophia. "Okay, well. I have football practice in, er, an hour. I can shoot you a text, if you want, when I'm done." Audrey glares at Sophia, almost as if she was conveying a death threat via telepathy if she were to refuse. "Hmm, well that sounds cool. Thanks!" "Alright. Sweet." Eric then took out his phone and put in Sophia's phone number, and Sophia had done the same as Eric stated his immediately after. Eric grinned and wished Sophia, Audrey, Sydney, and Sean a temporary farewell, though not before Sophia made him give her (and everyone else) a hug first. Eric then left, leaving the four together alone momentarily. Sean, remaining mostly silent through the entire tour, left minutes later to join Eric and the other CDA players for workouts and a subsequent practice session. Sydney, a bit equally silent, turned toward Sophia with a smile on her face. "I like Eric, he's so nice!" Sophia grinned and hugged her beloved younger sister.

Coastal Daytona School Parking Lot - 8:53AM

Image

"Shit. I'm going to be so late." Megan Carrollton said to herself, rather dramatically, looking at the time at her wristwatch as she seemed unable to find a parking spot. Megan attempted to arrive on time, early even, but no such luck in finding a place to even park as she did not anticipate the sheer number of people who would show up for check-in day just moments prior. Alas, however, fortunate would be on her side as she spotted an empty spot near the far-side of the lot. Megan pulled into the spot, opened the door of her 2015 white Honda Civic, and slammed the door shut after retrieving her book-bag and scampering toward the main building. By the time she made it there, it appeared a bit of a line had began to form, and it bottle-necked right at the lobby. It seems as though after all these years, the school administration still failed to figure out that it would have been better to divide up book/check-in day by grade. Nonetheless, Megan slid into the back of the line and awaited her turn while the line slowly made its' way up to the entrance of the school lobby and hoping that someone at this place would entertain her with some sort of a small-talk.

Larry Fisher

Larry woke up at 8AM exactly. His eyes blinked open as he sat up in his cozy little bedroom. It wasn't a mansion, but it was a good bedroom that suited his needs, and he was lucky to have a bedroom anyways, so it didn't really matter to him. The quilt had been sewed by his grandma, who had recently taken up weaving, knitting and sewing, and sold handmade clothes as a business. She liked the work, being her own boss, and it meant she could take care of Larry while Pop worked as a carpenter. On the walls were many plastered posters of the Strokes, Modest Mouse, and the Arctic Monkeys. Other than that, the walls were beige, he had a small bulletin board on one wall, had a regular light, and a curtained window. There was a desk opposite the bed, that was neat as usual. Desk lamp in the corner, laptop perfectly centered, school stuff on the left along with his pencil bin, and his journal near the bottom-right corner of his desk. Drawers organized. A bookshelf full of comics and books, with several large Lego models on top and on a small shelf built directly above. Nightstand full of personal items and dresser. A large reading chair in the corner. Closet was also neat. Just the way he liked it.

He got up, brushed, and had a quick shower before going back to his bedroom to change. He pondered for a second, mostly to see what went well together, before picking an undershirt, a leather jacket, some dark jeans and cowboy boots. Not because they made him handsome, or some shit like that, because he liked them. He then strolled over to the kitchen where Grandma and Pop were making breakfast.

"Morning Grams, morning Pop." he greeted while giving them each a quick hug. Grams responded with: "You look handsome today, Tryin' to get a girl?" Larry chuckled. "Nope, I just like the clothes.". "Could've fooled me Larry," Pop said "Look at you! Ya look like one of them Hell's Angels at a gas station." Larry grinned. "But I'm not stabbing people at Rolling Stones concerts, am I now?" They all laughed, and settled down for a quick breakfast of eggs and bacon, with a glass of orange juice. Breakfast is always a quiet affair, but today it was bustling with activity, questions and answers flying back and forth about school. After some time, Larry got his trunk stuffed with clothes, handheld games, comics, and toiletries, and piled in to Grams' old Volkswagen.

The lot was packed with cars, and Grams was cursing as she maneuvered her way around the crowded lot. They almost found a spot, but some idiot girl pulled in right as they were about to, causing Grams to honk her horn and scream a curse. Grams wasn't the most patient of individuals. "What an airhead." she muttered, before turning to Larry. "Don't ever let me catch you dating a girl like that! You deserve a smart, funny, athletic girl, same personality as you. Not that stupid girl." Larry, slightly taken aback by Grams' rant, responded with "What kind of girl do you think I've been searching for this whole time?". They pulled into a nearby empty spot, and Larry leaned over and hugged Grams. "Bye Grams, see you soon. I'll call you as soon as possible." Grams, tearing up: "Have an amazing time Larry, remember, your youth is limited, so spend it right." Larry laughed again. "Got it, bye!" He hopped out of the car with his luggage and pulled it easily behind him, queuing up a Strokes song on his phone.

He finally got inside, but the line was massive, and he was getting a little claustrophobic. He quickly ducked into the back of the line, right behind the girl who had stolen their parking spot. She looked extremely bored, as he was feeling now. Although, probably not as bored, as he has a good amount of patience. He decided to engage in small talk.

"Claustrophobic as well?" he asked.

Coastal Daytona School Entrance
The girl to whom Larry appears to be addressing slowly turns around to look at him, with his luggage to suggest the he, too, was a boarding student. Megan's eyes quickly moved from the luggage to the eyes of the boy that it belonged to and who stood behind her, flashing a slight, if not warm, grin. "I've actually been in worse." Megan responded nonchalantly, glancing forward to the front of the line. "You'd be surprised." Megan then looked back at Larry, and shot a glimpse once more of his belongings. "So, plausibly an obvious question, but I take it that you're staying on campus as well?"

Ryo Shimizu

Ryo’s taxi arrived at the school’s entrance with time to spare. He had not slept well the night before, so the least he could do was arrive in good time. The hotel had been nice, but getting a good sleep was always going to be a challenge. After the twenty or so hours of travel from Tokyo Narita to Atlanta and then finally onto Daytona, Ryo had imagined nothing to him would look as inviting as a warm and comfortable bed. But having arrived, instead he spent much of the night talking to his friends back in Japan. Whether it was the sleep he took on the plane or just the excitement for the coming morning, he could not switch off. Instead he thought of what he would have been doing right then in Kawasaki. His family would be settling down to their evening meal without him. This had happened before, when he was out of town or away at a swimming meet, but it felt different this time. On those occasions he was always part of a group to keep him company, here he was alone.

After getting ready and a final call home, he checked out. Hailing a taxi, Ryo showed the driver the school’s address from the letterhead of his acceptance letter. It was only a few minutes later he started to see students getting dropped off or walking towards the school. It was still unusual to see the mix of styles and the absence of a school uniform, he wondered if he would ever get used to it. After paying his fare, Ryo stepped out of the cab to help the driver with his luggage. He checked everything was there and then he made his way inside. The line was mercifully short, Ryo wanted to drop off his luggage and get into a good routine. When he finally got to the front of the line, the school staff quickly put him at ease. They efficiently checked his name off the arrivals list, handed him his key and information pack and encouraged him to attend the upcoming school tours.

Putting on his headphones, Ryo scrolled down his phone's menu until he found 耳ヲ貸スベキ.* He started the track and went off to find his dorm room. The song was older than he was, but the lyrics were comfortingly familiar for Ryo. The rapper spoke about the importance of practice for a person to achieve their dreams; it reminded Ryo of why he was here. He found his dorm room, the key worked and he left his bags in the room. He thought about unpacking all of his belongings and waiting for his roommate to arrive, he decided against it. He wasn’t sure which bed his roommate would want and Ryo did not want to get their relationship off on the wrong foot, so instead he switched off the music, locked the door and made his way back out towards the main building.

The school was much busier now, as more and more students arrived. So Ryo kept a low profile as he waited for his scheduled tour to begin. He nervously straightened his baseball jersey as he took in the school; he was impressed it all looked so bright, fresh and modern, very different to the traditional style of Keio. As the tour group began to form, Ryo introduced himself to his fellow students. They were all friendly and looked as nervous as he felt. He heard his phone ping in his pocket, it was a message from his sister, “心配しないで。全てうまくいくよ。“** it made him smile as he waited.

* “You better listen up”
** “Don’t worry, everything will be fine”.

She was early.

She was always early.

A tour of the school wasn't necessary. Neither was small talk. Both of them would take up valuable time, and she didn't want to mix with other people more than absolutely necessary.

That hadn't ended well before, and it probably wouldn't end well again--besides, she had better things to do with her time after checking in. She had textbooks, so she might as well study. Drawing back and away from the crowds, or as far away as she could get under the circumstances, she pulled a book out of her bag and opened it, standing stiffly against the wall as she read.

For a moment, she felt the urge to reach up and touch the baubles in her hair, as if checking to reassure herself of their presence. She stifled that desire quickly enough, and turned back to her reading, trying to focus.

Getting a head start on the material can only end well, after all.
"Sheesh, is it always this crowded? Feels like it wasn't so bad last time... oh who'm I kidding, that was a year ago, I've slept since then, I don't remember that. Feels weird. 'Scuse me. Coming through. Way too many people in here. What? No, I don't want a tour of the school, thanks though. Yes, I know where everything is. Don't bother. Not a problem. Oh my gosh."

She pushed her way through the other students, bag slung over her shoulder and eyes bright with enthusiasm, though anyone who knew her would say that it wasn't for school. That was if anyone actually knew her, which she supposed was debatable... Doesn't matter. They like me just fine how I am right now, thanks. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Simple as that.

Right... We'll see how the year goes, I guess.

Dah dee dah dee dah, dum dum dee dum dum dee dum, dee dum-de-dum, dee dum-de-dum, dee dum-de-dum-de-dah... Wow, that's a lot of people. Maybe I should've gotten here earlier...

So many people... Nope, chill out. You're fine. Just keep walking and you won't have any problems... Dee dum dee dum dee, dum dee dum dee dum-de-dum, dee dum-de-dum, de-dah...
She continued humming to herself, pasting a bright smile on her face and calling out "Hello, hello," as she took her place at the back of the line. "Lots of people here, huh? I wasn't expecting that, I wasn't. Is it always like this? Is it?" She looked curiously at the person in front of her, before realizing that they appeared to be talking to someone else already, and flushing red in embarrassment. "Sorry, sorry," she mumbled. "Didn't realize you were talking. My bad."

Theme: One Life

Carmine Black
August 14th, 2017 8:30 AM
Coastal Daytona Academy Parking Lot

Sapphire orbs leered at the familiar campus from above the round lens of her wide rimmed aviators. The day had come. Summer was over. Carmine blew a loose strand of blonde hair from her face as she disembarked from the Cadillac. Rolling columns of parked vehicles lined the surrounding parking lot. An impressive sight, dwarfed only by the discharge of people streaming from the parked doors. Students. Faculty. Parents. Luggage. A lot of it in some cases. A flood of humanity, myriad in number. A bulbous mass of limbs and flesh. Drawn towards the lobby and other assorted facilities like moths to a flame.

"Will you be all right, dear? This is a bit far off."

Her mother's voice was concerned, brows furrowed as the older woman peered at the school buildings in the distance. They had arrived half an hour early in an attempt to preempt the crowd, but it was clear just about everyone else had the same idea. In the end, they were forced to park towards the periphery at the lot, not too far, but certainly not close by any stretch.

If you think this is bad now, just wait until the nine hour mark hits. Carmine thought, but replied with a quick reassurance instead. "This suits me just fine. Good to work the muscles." She flattened the creases of her CDA varsity jacket and did a few stretches to emphasize her point. Upon noticing a few recently arrived upperclassmen exiting their car nearby, she then stretched both her arms out wide, thrusting her chest forward as the hem of her shirt was pulled just above her belly button, showing off a bit of her midriff in the process. The gesture earned her a few oggling glances from the boys in question, padding her own ego more than just a bit.

"Carmine is a big girl now, darling. We can't coddle her forever."

The voice of her father interjected into the conversation just as the trunk of the vehicle was slammed shut and her luggage was unloaded. He was a tall and somewhat bulky man with slicked back blonde hair, just like her own. What little middle age fat he did have was sharply hidden beneath an impeccable suit, presenting the respectable image of a well-off attorney as he quickly joined her mother's side, whose modest sundress completed the image of a traditional couple.

"You look just like your mother when she was your age." He reminisced. "When you told us you wanted to dorm here with Beth for your sophomore year, admittedly we were against it at first." Her mother gave her a sad smile. "But, it's not right for parents to leash their children forever. It's about time you fostered a bit of independence. This will prepare you for college."

Carmine willed a warm smile onto her face, false, yet indistinguishable from the real thing. She loved her family, though not in the conventional sense. It was more accurate to say she liked them. That she had a positive opinion of them. It was the closest thing she could muster to empathy or intimacy for that matter.

Thankfully, before the silence became awkward, her mother quickly chimed in. "Our little girl is growing up!" The older woman gushed, getting a bit emotional as she pulled her into a tight hug. Carmine went rigid for a moment, but quickly willed back the smile on her face as the tension left her shoulders in spite of her discomfort.

They exchanged a few more pleasantries before it was time to separate. Work called.

"We're proud of you, dear." Her mother rolled down the passenger seat window, face flushed as red as her hair. "We'll bring the rest of your stuff later this week. Remember to give us a call if you need anything."

Carmine did not forget her sister. "Send Clover my love."

When the Cadillac was gone from sight, she couldn't help but stare at the empty space where her parents had been. Her lips curved into a frown, mask slipping for the briefest of moments. I love them. Right?

Left to her own devices, she took the opportunity to survey the passing throng of people. Where are you? She wondered, growing frustrated when the person in question was no where in sight. When this proved unfruitful, she pulled out her phone and read something on screen. Her gaze rested on the distant as she stepped forward.

To the side. Towards the neighboring baseball diamond. She blew a loose strand of blonde hair and then

Bethany Solo
August 14th, 2017 8:42 AM
Coastal Daytona Academy Batting Cages

The ball hit the chain link fence with a clang. A clean hit with the bat. Bethany wiped some sweat from her brow as she took in her handy work. Proper technique was paramount when it come to hitting the ball. Feet spread apart, shoulder width. Not too close to prevent overstriding and not too far so as to not weaken the weight and momentum of a rotational swing. Balance was key, the weight pressed on the balls of the feet, not the heels. Never the heels. With the back feet planted and hands level with the shoulders and above the strike zone.

She reached inside her pack and pulled out another ball, the surface worn and calloused to the touch. It fit snugly on the batting tee as she prepared her swing.

"A bit early for practice don't you think?" She heard a voice drawl from behind her. "Didn't even know the cage was already open for players."

Bethany greeted her friend with a pleased smirk. The other girl had a backpack slung over one shoulder and the handle of a four wheeler suitcase in the grip of a free hand. The blonde's rounded aviators rested at the bridge of her nose, allowing the two to establish eye contact, swirling blue orbs meeting a pair of chestnut grey.

"Had time to kill until practice. A bit hard to nip at the sheep with all the parents around." She pressed the end of her bat on the red clay beneath, and leaned on the club for support, its surface blemished with the wear of tear of constant use. Dark, gleaming steel coated bloody crimson. "How about you? Any luck on your end, chief?"

Carmine shook her head. "No bueno. Didn't see him this morning."

An amused giggle. "Maybe you didn't wish hard enough on your birthday?"

"You jinxed me by eating half the cake last week." The blonde jested with a slight smirk of her own. A genuine, if not muted emotional response. "Remind me not to invite you for my sweet sixteen next year."

After a little more quipping back and forth, the conversation turned to the present situation.

Carmine looked at the batting tee. "You're practicing with a baseball."

"That's what I'm used to." Bethany shrugged and grabbed the hardball. "The girls played with the boys back in grade school. No distinction between baseball and softball when we were young."

The ball flew in the air with a light toss. "Now, they give us girls softer balls and a smaller field." She added as the projectile landed back on her palm. "Like we're dainty flowers in need of coddling. Shameful, don't ya think?"

Her friend raised a brow. "Didn't peg you for a feminist."

"Ugh, don't associate me with those screeching banshees now." Bethany jeered playfully, even as she carefully dissected each and every one of her friend's responses. The other girl had woven such a convincing image of an upstanding and friendly popular girl persona in her daily life that it was hard to tell which was real and which was fake even for someone in the know like she was. What was certain was that the blonde let her guard down around her to a certain extent. More subdued and withdrawn from the public mask she feigned around the meatheads and groupies that typically made up the in-crowd atop the highschool social ladder.

Something integral that was missing and she was determined to find out what exactly. Which ironically enough rested centered on the blonde's feelings towards a certain individual of note.

"Is that...?"

She followed the direction her friend's glare and was greeted with the sight of a lanky young man cutting through the green grass straight towards campus. A familiar face even at this distance. Asian. Thick glasses. A nervous, awkward gait. The primary victim of their bullying. Prey at the mercy of predators.

Speak of the devil.

"Tim."

Carmine's reaction was telling. Her gaze was intense, focused. Accompanied by a faint flush that spread across the cheeks. On the ears and the neck. Hands clenching into balled fists. A visual spectacle to the lone person observing and the confirmation to any lingering doubts if it had existed.

Already aware of this tidbit however, Bethany used the opportunity to check out her friend instead. She first started out at the face, eyes drifting down from the narrow nose, to the sharp jaw, then the pale and slender neck. Then below, where she paid paid particular attention to the way the other girl's shirt slid up the belly button whenever she arched her back subtly like she did now, revealing a toned stomach in the process. Perhaps a subconscious decision on the blonde's part. Hardly revealing, yet enough to track the wandering eye.

"You haven't realized it yet?" She taunted with a mocking smile. Like she was watching a child grappling with arrested development, navigating through alien emotions. Confused between love and hate, wroth when failure inevitably reared its face.

The blushing cheerleader shot her a confused, if not defensive look. "Realized what?"

This was too fun. "Cute enough I suppose." She replied vaguely, milking her companion's obliviousness for all its worth. "Bit too small for my liking though." The boy in question certainly didn't qualify as a hunk by any stretch, and those of his ethnic background weren't known for impressive packages but who was she to judge?

The blonde frowned, though the blush made it look more like a pout. "Call me up when you start making sense." The older girl paused, eyes turned towards the retreating form of her unfortunate victim and would be crush. "It's about time we checked in anyway."

"Aw, too good for the absolutely riveting cafeteria tour~?"

When her friend didn't bother with a reply, the softball athlete only smirked as she zipped up her own CDA varsity jacket and began tidying up her equipment. First the bad. Then the balls. Neatly tucked inside her pack. It didn't take her long to get ready.

"Lead the way, chief."

You might just kill him before you wisen up at this rate. Which suited Bethany just fine. She giggled and smirked, even as

Timothy Kim

Coastal Daytona Academy Lobby

Timothy shifted back on forth on his feet, standing somewhat uncomfortably from his place in the long line that stretched inside the lobby. He had departed home more than an hour early to avoid the inevitable crowd, but was waylaid from the beaten path several times on his way to school. A miracle in itself considering that his apartment was close enough that a twenty minute walk was all it took to arrive at his destination, limiting any potential distractions that might take place in the process.

If only life worked out according to plan.

First was the old woman stranded on the wrong side of the road. Then the cat stuck atop the tree. Then a neighbor with a broken toaster. Then the bicycle thief. Just to name a few. All time consuming detours and complications any sensible person would have left to the proper authorities. A normal person certainly would have prioritized their own interests and schedule in the given situation, or at the very least limited their concern to one of these problems, if any at all. Too bad that he didn't exactly fit either category of sense or normalcy, with all the good and bad that it entailed.

While, there was much personal satisfaction in helping those in need, he was also very eager to effect some positive change in other people's lives in general. Too eager in fact. With his efforts ultimately eating up the time allowance afforded to him in the first place with little to show other than some good karma.

The ensuing rush to campus was an ordeal in and of itself, and it wasn't just because he had to sprint his way through to make up lost time. At one point, he was even forced to cut through the outlying greenery around the campus as a shortcut. During which, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched the entire time. He did spot a handful of athletes in the middle of early morning routines on the way, though he doubted they paid any mind to the random kid cutting through the field.

By the time he secured a place in line, the wait was already more than a little protracted. His only consolation was that he wasn't last in line, though he certainly wasn't the first. Whereas, other students had friends to talk to to pass the time however, he was left to his own devices, absorbed in his own thoughts just as the line progressed at a snail's pace.

I am the master of my fate.

He silently repeated the mantra his father told him when he was a kid, a quote by Henley in the poem Invictus. Ever an optimist, he tried to look at the bright side. He hadn't come across any of his usual bullies yet, if at all today. The absence of a certain blonde cheerleader and her lackey were certainly a plus. If luck was on his side, it would remain that way. Though, it hardly mattered if it didn't. Only I can define myself. No one else.

Then his phone rang. He answered it.

"Hey sport. Things going fine?" The hoarse voice of his father greeted him.

"Yeah. Arrived right on schedule." He answered with white lie, not wanting to worry his old man any further. Even now, he could hear his lone guardian coughing on the other line.

"Good. You need this son. You're at the age when a man needs to come onto his own."

Tim gulped. He was only here because of his father's urging. If it were up to him, time spent on campus would be minimized as much as possible, if only to avoid the mess that was his school life. He would be much more productive at home, learning the trade from his father and occupying himself with the odd job around the neighborhood. The fact he never informed the old man about the bullying certainly didn't help either, however committed he was to shouldering his burdens alone.

There was no mention of these objections naturally. His father already heard half of them in the past and had more than enough to worry about. "I'll do right by you, dad."

There was a moment of silence, followed by another cough. "I know."

They bid their farewells. Then the line was cut.

Timothy felt wistful for a brief moment before his eyes hardened into a determined expression. He finished the second line of the poem in his mind.

I am the captain of my soul.

Larry Fisher

"You would be correct, I'm staying on campus. Grandparents wanted to me experience life by myself, I agreed, that's all there was to it."

Larry was very startled when some brunette girl literally crept up and practically shouted "Hello, hello!" right behind him. She continued to drone on about the amount of crowding, before saying she didn't realize parking-lot girl and him were in conversation. Larry, after recovering from his original state of scare, recovered quickly. There was no reason to apologize, it's not like they were having some deep, meaningful conversations or something like that. He then addressed the new girl:

"It's fine, you weren't really interrupting. Feel free to join our conversation. Since there seems to be a group assembled, I guess I'll introduce myself. Name's Larry." He extended his hand for a shake to both.

"Oh! Okay, that's good, it is." She tilted her head slightly, staring at his outstretched hand and reaching a thin, pale hand out in return, though she only took his for a few moments. "Larry," she repeated, and smiled again. "My name--it's Shannon. I'm glad I wasn't really interrupting, I am. I don't want to be rude. Sometimes I'm just a bit of an airhead, so I make mistakes, I do." She laughed, high and girlish, and shrugged carelessly. "Some are worse than others. Are you new, like me? Are you?"

Larry Fisher

Larry chuckled at the girl's enthusiasm. She seemed like one of those super-perky girls who never run out of energy, like some of those cheerleaders. Larry always wondered where they got all that pep and energy from. Maybe they got it from sleeping with so many jocks. Anyways, he decided to answer the girl's question.

"Curb the enthusiasm a bit. And no, I'm not new, it's my second year. Although this is my first time boarding here. And yes, the line's always like this. You'd think after all this time they would've at least figured out some way of organizing it better, but I guess high schoolers are pretty wild, you'd need a police force in here to keep things from breaking into riot."

"...Oh, am I being too excited? Sorry, sorry," Shannon said quickly, toning down the excitement a notch. "Is this a nice school, then? Is it? My old school was nice, it was, but my big brother wanted to go to college here--I mean in Florida--and we moved here, so I hope it's not a bad school, I do. And that we don't need the police to come, of course, of course. Not for anything at all. Right? Right?"

She closed both eyes and smiled even wider. Dum dah dum dah, dum de-de-de-dah, de-dum-dah-de-dum-de-dum-de-dum dum dee dum dee dum...

Yusuf Erkan

Yusuf yawned into his fist as he leaned into the lamp post on the side walk, the school's car park to his right. He felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, already aware of who it was, the boy rolled his eyes before sliding the phone out, tapping in his passcode and opening messages. As expected it was his father. "What the hell is he doing texting me so early?", Yusuf sighed, replying to the text with only a single word; anlıyorum (I understand). He didn't know why he bothered, but then he remembered this was father, the type who always wanted to be ahead of everybody else. One of many traits they did not share. He smiled at his sister's text however, a quick bout of encouragement and the ubiquitous "I miss you". Pulling his headphones from his ears and delicately pushing them into his pale blue backpack, his morning walk was officially at an end. That had always been a habit of his, and not one that would be ending anytime soon, walking always seemed to provide a serenity that wasn't as readily available elsewhere.

It was still crazy to think that only two weeks ago he had been enjoying his last week of freedom in the familiar suburbs of Seattle with his friends, leaving them was the hardest part by far, the only people he felt he could count on all of the time. Jennie, the Vietnamese girl who liked to dye her hair in crazy colours and wasn't afraid to be judged, Mia, the somewhat nerdy and immensely loyal Latina and Diego a self proclaimed bisexual stoner. They were all different and had somehow happened to end up as the inseparable group. Until now. Shaking those thoughts, Yusuf stared down at his feet as they paced across the grey concrete of the sidewalk. He was wearing solid black suede shoes, paired with ripped black slim fitting jeans folded up twice at the bottom and a thin beige sweater, with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, a red bandana hung loosely around his neck to complete the outfit. Yusuf kept walking around the edge of the car park and then across where there was considerably less cars to run him over, before finally making his way into the school building.

Once inside, his face fell as the first crowd of his new school became visible. "Why must these corridors always be such a labyrinth!?", Yusuf thought as he pushed through the tiny gap between a crowd of fifteen year old girls and the wall. Was that really necessary? "Must they really stay in such packs?", he said under his breath while sighing probably more dramatically than was needed. If there was one thing he hated in schools more than anything else, it was the utter lack of coordination displayed by the majority of students. The struggle was a yearly occurrence. Coming into a more open section, Yusuf propped his bag up to a more comfortable position and only now and paid attention to the sullen East Asian boy with glasses who had been walking ahead of him, oblivious to the glares and no doubt judgement the nearby girls had been directing at him. He was cute, but seemed distant. Yusuf briefly considered making some form of conversation, but as usual decided against it, for now. What if he was just misunderstanding the situation?

Larry was now slightly offput by the girl's utter enthusiasm and personality. She seemed super perky and strange, as if she was new to Earth. It's like she was a time traveler, becoming utterly fascinated with the world around her. But he decided to continue. Maybe she would reveal a little more about why she was acting so strange.

"You'd be surprised. High schoolers have a tendency to draw police the way a moth is attracted to flame." He then smiled a bit. "And yes, it's a nice school. Some people aren't the nicest, but after you get past those people, it's a great school. Just try not to get in the way of Carmine Black, or you'll be in for a world of hurt."

Surprised? No, I wouldn't.

"...Carmine... Black?" She tilted her head slightly, and a near-imperceptible frown made itself known on her face. "I'll remember that, I will. How will I know who she is, though? Maybe I'll get in her way without knowing that it's her--that might be a problem, it might be." She shrugged. "I don't want to make a mistake like that. Is she around here, so I can see her? Is she?"

"Carmine Black? If you see a Caucasian, blonde cheerleader a little shorter than me, and she's thrusting her chest in front of guys, that's probably her. Usually she has an Hispanic girl tagging along with her. She usually bullies an Asian boy, but she bullies others too. Make some friends, fast, or she'll come for you too. If she does bully you, or you see someone else being bullied by her, I would say tell an authority, but they won't believe you and she'll just torment you more. Other than that, you'll probably be okay."

As many as possible...

"Does she bully you, Larry? Does she? That'd be sad. You seem nice. Nice people shouldn't be bullied. Well, no one should, that's true."

Larry chuckled again.

"Thank you, I'm flattered. Some people would not have the same opinion of me. And no, she's never bullied me before, I luckily have escaped her notice until now. I have enough friends to not make me a social outcast, so I'm never really bothered. And you're right, she does act strangely, I'm not sure why. I'm not sure why anyone bullies. I guess they like doing it." He sighed and shrugged. "Anyways, its good that you try to make friends, it makes life a lot easier. I would recommend joining band, I met many friends there."

"Band? I might do that, I might." Shannon's eyes lit up at the mentioning of the possibility, and she shifted her weight from one foot to the other as if excitedly fidgeting. "I like music. Playing piano and singing, that's what I do. So if there's room for me, I want to join, I definitely want to. It'd be fun." She turned to the girl who Larry had been talking to before, and frowned slightly. "You haven't said anything. Are you okay? Are you?"

Timothy Kim
August 14th, 2017
Coastal Daytona Academy Lobby

Call it intuition. Sixth sense. Even instinct. The intangible inkling everyone feels to perceive another person staring right at them. Now, intensify that in the case of Timothy, whose senses were honed throughout the years from the cat and mouse chase between predator and prey, bully and victim that developed a particular sensitivity that detected even the most discreet gaze on his person. Right now was no exception. He sensed uninvited eyes on his back even amidst the excited and lively clamor of the surrounding students and mentally prepared himself for the worst as he peered over his shoulder.

The first thing he saw was the vindictive blonde keen on ruining his life, as well as her smirking lackey. Just as they entered the building. The diabolical duo. Greeted almost immediately by a circle of friends made up of like minded, popular and attractive students. Some vain groupies and others would-be admirers, jocks and cheerleaders, whose chatter made pair too distracted to notice him at the moment, something which he was grateful for.

Their recent arrival however meant the culprit behind the unsolicited staring was someone else other than his usual tormentors, which somewhat surprised him. After a cursory search, it turned out to be a rebellious looking upperclassmen staking out the building instead. In the brief eye contact that was established, there was no clear hostility in the other boy's gaze, a good sign for now, even if the junior's motives remained a mystery.

Wonder what his deal is? Timothy contemplated, hoping the student wasn't sizing him up for a fight. The rebel types usually left him alone, so he was cautiously optimistic in that sense. He already had enough to deal with in terms of other people his age, most of which seemed intent on ignoring the unpopular loner or joining his tormentors as would be accomplices. He had long given up on the idea on friends by this point both in fear of roping them into his problems and due to outside interference, which was why the thought that the prospecting junior from earlier might have been looking for a friend never occurred to him.

He then made the mistake of checking back up on the diabolical duo. Only to find the blonde staring right at him. Aviators lifted above her brow. Revealing narrowed, blue orbs that glared right into his very own hazel. As direct as it could have been.

Timothy recoiled at his mistake. His head whipped back towards the front in a vain hope that he could disappear into the line, to hide and shirk away as just a face in the crowd, cellphone in hand. But it was too late because

Carmine Black

She spotted him. A close call too. One second later and he would have slipped from her grasp as just another face lost in the crowd. A brief instance was all it took.

Glossy lips curved into a smirk, yet triumph was the last thing she felt. Once more, her stomach felt weak and tied up in knots. Her cheeks flushed with color and her very heart skipped and fluttered in her chest. An alien reaction that accompanied an equally alien emotion yet unknown to her. Whatever it was that she felt right now scared her, made her uneasy. Angered her and made her blood boil. Symptoms that only came about in the presence of a certain boy named Timothy Kim. Ever since that fateful day in middle school.

No blemish appeared on her public mask even she attempted to quickly wrap up a conversation with a fellow cheerleader. Something about cute boys and sports. Probably the upcoming football game with Bartram. Whatever it was, the blonde smiled and complimented, quipped and giggled when necessary to uphold her sociable persona. Until she managed to successfully disengage from her peers with the excuse of needing to check in.

"I swear, some of these meatheads are just hopeless. No brains whatsoever." Bethany complained after they secured some distance from the previous group, her red bat resting on her shoulder. At one point, the girl pulled it out in the middle of a conversation with one of the upperclassmen who played baseball to show it off. The Latina grew increasingly bored with the guy's rambling however if the abrupt end to their conversation was any indication.

"Hmm..." Carmine's mask slipped as she replied noncommittally, eyes focused on a certain Asian boy instead. Unlike her, it was clear her friend put much less effort in being sociable, though it was ironically that very same snippy attitude that number of the other guys found attractive in the first place. At least that's what she's been told.

"Just look at them! All these freshies ready for plucking." Her friend cooed as they stopped at a much more open space to survey the increasingly long line. "Too bad they're holding up the line for us. Might as mark our prey while we're at it."

"Us?" Blue eyes glanced the brunette's light load. Just a duffel bag and a bat. She raised a brow. "Says the girl who already checked in."

"Aw, don't be like that!" She felt an arm wrap around her shoulder. "Partners in crime stick together don't they? Now let's see..."

Bethany started pointing out a number of potential targets among the gathered freshman. Her friend pointed to one dainty looking girl near the back of the line.

"How about her? Ugh no, looks like she's friends with that weird hipster. Yuck."

Carmine only shrugged in response, too focused on a certain someone at this point. Her friend was quick to take note and followed her line of sight.

"Is that...?"

"It's him." She affirmed, emotions in further turmoil now that they stood closer to her main victim (and crush).

The other girl squinted her eyes. "Hard with that bloated backpack. Looks like he's going camping with that thing. It's obscene."

She agreed, albeit silently. The pack covered most of the teen's upper body and entire head from the back. "It makes sense. I did hear he was staying on campus this semester." That's why she was so eager to find him earlier, if only to confirm this particular tidbit. The thought strangely made her happier than expected.

"Keeping close tabs on him?" Her friend was looking at her expectantly with an evil grin. For some reason she personally felt defensive about the quip. So what if she did? Thankfully, the brunette was quick to change topics. "Well, anything interesting in mind, chief?"

Carmine bit her lip and thought it over. There was no way she was going to let Timothy off the hook after spotting him, having been searching for the teen since morning. There was also no way she was going wait with this crowd. That's where her favorite victim came in. How nice of him to save me a spot. Perfect opportunity to mess with him a bit too. The teaser before another exciting school year. "Let's just razz him for a bit. Nothing major though. Too crowded and public in here."

Her hands balled into fists and her heart rate grew more erratic as

Bethany Solo

She gave a fellow softball player a high five as they ranged the line. As well as anyone else she recognized that was considered popular, however much they might have bored her personally. Even a predator needed allies to thrive after all. Bethany didn't give them much thought at the moment however. Her close attention was reserved towards blonde friend instead, whose blush was even worse now, though it could easily be chalked up as anger to those not in the know, especially due to the past history between the blonde and the boy in question.

"Heya!" She casually greeted with an all too friendly grin as they came to a stop beside Timothy, hoping it had an unsettling effect. It did to some degree, though to his credit, the loner hid his panicked expression well, but the wide eyes under his spectacles betrayed him.

"Y-You..." He stammered, eyes darting between the blonde and herself. That's when she noticed the cellphone in his hand.

"Cool!" Nimble fingers snatched his phone with a giggle. Too quick for him to stop her. She scrolled through its contents with a pleased smirk. "Is this the new iPhone?" She inquired while faking an impressed inflection in her voice. It wasn't the newest model by the way, nor even the last. Lame. "You're pretty lucky." Her compliment belied thinly veiled disdain. "My parents are pretty strict about this kind of stuff." They weren't.

Timothy furrowed his brow at her words, but otherwise showed no other signs of distress save for a clenched fist. Just taking their abuse without resistance. Like he always did. Enduring silently. A steady bulwark. A heavy stone. The type to not never to trouble others, even his bullies it seemed. Ever amusing as much as he was passive and weak. The proper way prey should act. She giggled as she slipped the phone into her pocket for safekeeping.

At this point, Carmine finally stepped in, and the blonde was much more direct. Slightly shorter than the sullen teen by an inch, the cheerleader grabbed him by the scruff of the neck to bring down to level with her as she leaned in close and whispered something in his ear. A rather intimate display to anyone looking from the outside.

Now, she didn't hear what was said exactly due to the low volume of the whisper and the surrounding clamor of talkative teens, but it was hurtful enough to bring about a pained expression on the boy's face. The greatest irony was that the three of them could pass as friends reuniting after a long summer from a distance, even if it was the furthest thing from the truth.

Bethany's lips curved into a cruel smirk as she observed the exchange between Carmine and Timothy. Whose personal drama never failed to amuse her. If only the former remained forever ignorant of her feelings, then this would be a wellspring of entertainment that would never run dry.

No one is coming to save you.

Girl's Dormitory Room 46 - 1:17PM

Image

Some time had passed, and Sydney stuck around to hang with Sophia around the dorm-room and to help her sister get the place set up - with Audrey doing the same in her own little part of the dorm. The place wasn't particular fancy, nor that large, but it at least gave the girls some privacy as they were given private bedrooms. Sydney got to work, happy to line up Christmas lights above the window that hovered over her bed. Sophia, meanwhile, simply hung up a NASA poster on her door and began to stock her books into a small shelf that was provided with the room. Upon some semblance of satisfaction with the room's arrangement, Sydney and Sophia went into the "living area" of their dorm, sat on the sofa, and began flipping through the TV channels, albeit not finding anything particularly interesting nor entertaining. "Well that's a bummer." Remarked Sydney, having possession of the remote, and ultimately decided to settle with CNN for now.

Not a second after, Eric sent Sophia a text. Sophia reached over to pick up her phone, which was resting on the arm of the chair as it was charging, and read the text aloud to Sydney.

Hey Sophia, I'm done for the day. If you want to hang out, meet me by the practice field. You might also want to bring a swim suit if you can.

"Swim suit? What, are we going to the beach?" Sydney inquired with a perplexed facial expression. Sophia just shrugged her shoulders and looked over to Audrey's room, where her roommate seemed to just be lying on the bed and playing with her phone. "Hey, Audrey! I just heard from Eric. He says to bring a swimsuit. You have one?" Audrey, playing candy crush on her phone while-half listening to the constant changing of the television channels, remarked from her room "Of course! Florida meant beaches, and I love going to the beach." Audrey paused, letting out a chuckle, and continued on. "Especially with amazingly cool and sweet guys like Eric, Oh and hot! Can't forget that!" Sophia just sighed and reached up to caress her forehead. "At least she's honest." Sophia said to Sydney. "You still fit in that white flowery two-piece?" "Yep. Well, at least I should." "Right, well let's get dressed then." Sophia responds, getting up and walking over to her bedroom to start taking out the swimsuits for herself and Sydney. Presumably, Audrey was doing the same as well. After awhile, Sophia stepped out wearing a white t-shirt and jean shorts with her blue two-piece swimsuit underneath. Sydney would be wearing the same, albeit with a white one, following her turn of changing in the bedroom. "Hey Audrey, you ready? Syd and I about to head over to meet with Eric." Audrey, finishing with her slipping into her white bikini under what seemed to be a standard jean-shorts and tank-top look, stepped out of her room with a wide smile fixed on her face. First day at this school and they were already going to the beach, and with a boy? Audrey was enthused. "Yeah, totally. Let's go!" Audrey leaned over to open the door, holding it open for her new friends, then closed and locked it as they walked over the practice field.

Coastal Daytona Athletics Practice Field - 1:19PM

Image

"Hey, I think it's over here." Sophia said, pointing toward the gymnasium that Eric had previously shown them, and remembering something he said about the athletic offices being just outside of the gym. After meandering around the gym, and a few buildings that appeared to include a weight-room with some guys in it and a locker-room, Sophia spotted football players on a field not too far from where they are. The only thing that stood between the three and the field was a parking lot for coaches, faculty, and school administration. It appeared practice wasn't over, though Sophia knew her uncle wasn't going to flip out if she decided to show up. Or, at least that was what she thought. The three girls, all wearing jean-shorts and tanktops, immediately distracted several players as they stepped onto the practice field sideline from the parking lot. Coach Carl didn't seem to notice until one of his assistant coaches pointed them out. "Sophia! Sydney! Girls! What are you doing here?!" He asked aloud, shouting across the field, inadvertently allowing for everyone to hear. Almost everyone looked at the three girls immediately. Sophia paused for a moment, unsure what to say, and simply offered a slight wave to her uncle. Coach Carl sighed and shook his head. He then turned around to look at some of his players. "And what are you boys looking at? Run another play!" He barked out to them. Carl turned around and started to walk over to the three girls. "Oh for goodness sake, Sophia. You're wearing a white t-shirt and a blue top underneath." Sophia glanced down, not even remotely aware of just how much her swimsuit was visible, and silently shook her head. "What are you three doing here anyway?" Audrey giggled as Sophia just noticed her swimsuit situation, and stuck out her hand and offered it to Coach Taylor "Hey coach, I'm Audrey. Sophia's roommate for the year!" Coach Carl glanced over at Audrey, nodded his head, and extended out his hand in silence. "Nice to meet you, Miss Audrey." He said in a low-toned voice, still disappointed in his nieces.

Immediately after the introduction, however, his Defensive Coach, Kent Graves, lost his temper. "God dammit, guys! This is a basic, simple, defensive play! You should not be looking like a bunch of dumbasses who can't tell the difference between right and left!" In a fit of anger, Coach Graves goes on to break a clipboard in half, throw it on the ground, and storm out on field to begin chewing our his players one-by-one. "Well there goes another clipboard." Carl turns to face the three girls one last tine, sighing and shaking his head. "Look, I've gotta get back to work. Just. Promise me you three won't get into any trouble. Can you do that?" Sophia nods her head. "Yes sir, Uncle Carl." Sydney says. "Good." Carl responds, turning to glance at Audrey. "Keep an eye on my nieces for me. Your new roommate is particularly troublesome." Carl says with a slight smirk, then turns around and walks back toward the field. "Sorry for that, Coach. I needed to have a word with my nieces. What seems to be the situation here?" Coach Carl asks calmly from afar, walking toward his defensive players and their coordinator.

Eric excitedly exited the locker room with his friend, Jake Anderson, as he talked about the girls he had met and gave a tour to just earlier in the day. "Dude. Both of the juniors, Sophia and Audrey, are really cute. Audrey was checking me out the entire time, and man she wasn't shy about it either. The other girl, the third one, was Sophia's sister. She's gonna be a freshman." As he talked he noticed the trio of girls standing and watching Coach Taylor walk toward an enraged Coach Graves. "I forgot to mention. Sophia? She's Taylor's niece." Eric said with grin. "Anyway, I'll see ya later man!" Eric was wearing a gray sleeveless shirt and basketball shorts which allowed for Audrey, in particular, to continue all the gawking she wanted over him. Eric was glad that Coach Graves had an outburst of anger that distracted Coach Taylor, allowing Eric to approach the girls without the awkwardness of Coach Taylor being there or noticing him. He ran up to Sophia, made eye contact with her and smiled. From afar, he didn't even seem to notice the rather noticeable blue bikini top underneath her shirt. Though as he got closer, he saw it but decided to not call attention to it, rather just gulping and maintaining eye-contact with Sophia who simply offered a slight wave to him. Eric had a gym bag being carried over his shoulder as he approached the group. Then, he stopped and stood right next to Sophia. "Yeah, he does that a lot. He knows what he's talking about, though. Ex-marine, special forces, and navy seal. He's intense, but the guy knows how to lead." they looked on for a moment longer as Graves continued to yell, with Coach Taylor standing right next to him and listening to his outburst. "He's also a junior-senior math teacher. So, you may have that to look forward to." He turned his attention back to the group. "So, y'all ready to go?" Audrey nodded her eagerly and smiled. "Yeah, totally. I know I am." "Is he that intense in class too?" Sophia inquired, awaiting for Eric to lead the three of them and Sydney quietly listening. Sydney shot a glance back to see one particular large player still watching on, almost staring at them. Sydney gulped, nervously looked away, and kept up with the others.

Student Parking Lot - 1:23PM

Eric took Sophia's question lightly, and thus decided to answer out in a joking response. "Just don't get a question wrong and I'm sure you'll be fine. He's a pretty cool guy off the field. He just demands excellence. As long as you follow his rules then you'll like him." They were now almost to Eric's car. "I heard, last year, that some kid got a phone call from his mother in class. So, Graves took his phone and just causally talked to his mother. Everyone half-expected him to just break the phone." Sophia darted a glance back, just as they were about to leave the field for the parking lot, and she too noticed the same player deliberating staring. She thought it better not to say anything, as it pertained both to the guy looking on at them or to the overly-zealous coach they had just left behind, simply turning to Sydney who shrugged her shoulders. "He still sounds like fun." Sydney remarked. "So, where are we going?" Sophia inquired immediately after. "Oh, just a drive around the city. I'll point out some of the highlights of the city, maybe stop somewhere to eat along the, then we hit the beach. Well, if that's ok with y'all of course." Eric said as they were now in the student parking lot, meandering throughout the lines of cars. "It's ok with me!" Audrey said as she followed closely behind Eric. Sophia, before Audrey managed to shout out a response, looked to her sister and the two were in-sync with each other's thoughts as they both nodded in response to the idea. "Yeah. Sure, that would be sweet." Sophia said as she was also looking around the school parking lot and taking in how many cars there seemed to be present. The group of four eventually came to a stop in front of a blue sports convertible with a trade mark trident in the grille. With key-in-hand, Eric unlocked the doors, then made his way over to open the door on the passenger side, sliding the car seat up so whoever sat in the back would be able to get in. Sophia happened to be the closest, technically, to Eric as he opened the passenger door, but Sydney took the opportunity as Sophia was checking out the convertible to sneak around and steal the front-passenger seat. "Shotgun!" Sydney shouted, looking back and grinning at Sophia. Sophia just rolled her eyes and looked at Audrey. "Every time..." Sophia said, jerking her head toward Sydney. "She tries to get me with that every time."

Eric by now was in the drivers seat getting situated and just seemingly laughed at the situation at hand. Sydney, by now, had a wide grin on her face, and Eric turned in his to face Sophia to grin at her as well. "You snooze, you loose." Audrey just smiled at Sophia, a girl whom she had only just met - but oddly already felt a growing connection. For now, it was a simple connection: the two being stuck in the back seat while the youngest was in the front. "That's okay, girl! The party is always in the back anyway!" Sophia nodded her head, smiling, at Audrey. There was something about this girl that she enjoyed as well, perhaps it was her refreshing honesty and her sense of humor. Sophia couldn't quite put a finger on their odd compatibility as roommates, and even friends, despite just meeting each other. The engine suddenly roared to life, and Eric pulled out of his spot to exiting the school grounds. The four of them, almost immediately, were cruising down the main highway in Daytona, checking out the local sights. A vibrant city life, or what the equivalent to it was at a place like this, was booming and people, everywhere, were walking the streets, going in-and-out of colorfully-painted buildings. Here and there, Eric would point out spots that would be of interest to everyone. A short-drive through the city's main highway included passing-by noteworthy locations such as Daytona International Speedway, a couple of museums for intellectuals like Sophia to enjoy, the local mall, and a couple parks. Sophia, Sydney, and Audrey all looked toward Eric as he gave a bit of a breakdown of what Daytona had to offer, as far as things to do were concerned. Yet, suddenly at a stoplight and in the midst of small-talk among the group, Eric brought up a touchy subject, unbeknownst to him, particularly as it pertained to the Taylors. "So, what brought you guys all the way to CDA? I mean, besides your uncle, Coach Taylor." Eric said, turning to look at Sophia once more inquisitively. "Eh, well. It's a bit of a story." Sophia said, looking to Sydney who simply sank in her seat that the thought of the actual reason why they were in Florida rather than being back home in Louisiana. Sophia then gave a nudge to Audrey, seated next to her. "Hey, why don't you go first? Where are you from, Audrey?"

Audrey was caught a bit off guard by Sophia's skirting of the question but shrugged and started to speak happily "Oh me? I'm from North Carolina, Asheville specifically. Uh, My dad is in the military, so we travel a lot. I've been to every state that is east of Missouri. Oh, and four different countries. I also like long walks on the beach, and cuddling by the fire!" Eric shook his head, humorously, and made his declaration. "Speaking of the beach, we have arrived!" Eric said, as he pulled into a parking spot near the boardwalk entrance. "You can, uh, you can leave your clothes on for now, probably. I'm pretty hungry after practice, so I'm going to be generous and buy y'all lunch. Okay?" Eric got out and opened the door for the ladies. Sophia was greatly relieved that Audrey managed to talk long enough to get them to the beach, allowing the answer she had to Eric's question to go unsaid. Yet, she knew that the answer would be revealed at some point - just didn't feel it to be particularly appropriate information to divulge immediately after meeting a boy who, Sophia finds, is rather ravishing and quite polite. "Oh, well how sweet of you. Thanks, Eric!" Sophia replied, after Eric let them out. As the four of them walked, Audrey ran up to be next to Sophia, and spoke in a hushed voice. "You know, most guys would want us just in bikinis as soon possible. You don't think he's gay or something, do you?" Sophia couldn't help but to smirk as Audrey posed her question. "I suppose we'll find out soon enough." Sophia remarked in response. "To be honest, I'm pretty hungry too. Syd and I haven't eaten anything since french toast for breakfast." She said to Eric. "What are our options?" Eric shrugged his shoulders and quickly shot back. "Well, where do you have in mind?" Sophia looked at his sister, noticing she was a bit quiet, and didn't want her to feel left out. Audrey leaned in, while Eric thought things through, to whisper something to Sophia "Well if he's gay, it would be the greatest disappointment this world has ever seen since Y2K." Sophia rolled her eyes, ignoring Audrey, and glanced over to see a nearby pier that stretched out over the beach. Sydney stepped up to be right next to her older sister, and smirked as she looked out toward the ocean. "I can get used to this. Let's go there!" Sydney exclaimed, pointing out to a building that sat on the pier with the presumption that it was some sort of a restaurant.

Megan Carrollton

Seconds after Megan had received the answer to her question, Shannon Walsh had butted into the conversation she had with Larry Fisher. And Boy, could she talk. Megan quietly listened in, as moments to chime in lessened with each sentence that was exchanged between the two and Megan simply started to look around to see what else there was happening. The line still seemed to be held up, for God knows what reason, and it was nearing 9:00 at this point. 8:57, to be precise. As her eyes meandered, in search for an activity to keep her occupied, Megan noticed a trio just in front of the trio she was naturally a part of. Little did she realize that it was the infamous Carmine Black and Bethany Solo making a move on their prey, Timothy Kim, and cutting into line in the process. Meg watched on for a moment longer, suspecting something was a bit off about Timothy's nervousness in particular - yet Megan couldn't quite make out what it was that was occurring. She looked on until Shannon turned toward her and inquired as to the reasoning for Megan being quiet. Megan's light brown eyes, compared to her pale white skin and jet-black hair, immediately darted back toward Shannon and she flashed a brilliant smile. "Yeah. Everything's fine. The two of you seemed like you were hitting things off so well. Hardly had the chance to get a word in between the two of you!" Megan said, secretly agreeing with Larry that Shannon was perhaps a bit too energetic and enthusiastic. Megan then looked back toward Carmine, Bethany, and Tim, though still listening to Shannon and Larry as they conversed, in order to continue observing what was occurring, finding a bit of a fascination in what was happening just behind Larry and Shannon, likely against their knowledge.

Larry Fisher

Larry gave a Megan a quick "Thank you" look. If he had been stuck in that conversation for any longer, he may have had a breakdown. Don't get him wrong, he liked talking with Shannon, but she could be exhausting, and he felt himself getting hoarse and foaming a bit. He quickly wiped his mouth and went on his phone to text his buddy Josh, but then he noticed something. He noticed an Asian kid getting pulled by the collar...by Carmine Black and her Latina companion. Ugh, what slime! Couldn't she leave him alone for a just five seconds? He slid his phone back into his pocket, and he noticed Megan looking in the same place as he was. He might as well go do something about it.

"Excuse me for one second." he said before jogging in the direction of the troubled trio, and quietly snuck up near them, and spoke to them, quietly, but with commanding authority.

"Carmine, long time no see. Please put him down, he has other things to worry about besides you and your lackey."

Carmine Black

Coastal Daytona Academy Lobby

Well, this was a first. Carmine never expected for someone else to intervene in their little drama and from the look on Timothy's face, neither did he. The newcomer was only vaguely familiar to her, though he didn't look like one of her usual targets. Just the same hipster looking weirdo from before that Bethany pointed out, who had been talking with the freshie at the end of the line. She narrowed her eyes under her aviators as she glanced at the newcomer, marring otherwise pretty features as they scrunched up into an annoyed expression. Her response was simple.

"And who the hell are you supposed to be?" The hiss was quiet, but no less furious. She was more than a little put off by the familiar way the newcomer addressed her. Her manicured hand was still wrapped around the scruff of Tim's neck and the interruption only made her tighten the grip and pull the boy closer.

It was Bethany who answered her. "Remember an old rumor from last year?" The shorter girl looked vexed, but had a cruel glint in those hazel grey eyes. She recognized that look. It usually meant the brunette was privy to some tidbit she wasn't aware of. One that could cause a lot of hurt. "About the newest addition to the band?"

She shot her friend a questioning look. Before it clicked. The ends of her lips curved into a smug smile. "Wow. You're moving up in life, Tim." She addressed her victim, who had remained silent until this moment. Then her gaze shifted to the newcomer. "Looks like you have some lowlife druggie for a friend now." Congratulations.

"You think we wouldn't know?" Her partner interjected haughtily as the brunette got into the interloper's face. "Because boy, do you need a shower. Even if people didn't talk, the smell alone would be a dead giveaway."

"So, just piss off and mind your own business. Before you ruin our little reunion any further." Carmine got in the last word, somewhat split between giggling and rolling her eyes at the latter part of her friend's statement. Insults didn't have to be true to work.

The blonde shivered and prepared to savor the reaction, but then

He jumped in for the first time throughout the exchange.

To say Timothy was taken aback was an understatement. Stunned would have been a more apt term. An entire year of abuse and harassment at the hands of these two girls and not once did another student jump to his aid, either too afraid or complicit, even indifferent. Not like the faculty was any better though. The girls had done enough damage to his reputation that the teachers would be more likely to search him for drugs or suspect him of cheating than ever take his word over his popular and affable (at least in class) bullies. Which was why it was all the more amazing that someone intervened now of all times before his second year.

Why? What was different now? Where was this person back then? All these questions swirled in his mind as he nervously observed the possible confrontation. In fact, he would have believed this all to be a dream if not for the all too real grip around his collar courtesy of a certain blonde, whose grip was surprisingly strong.

Earlier, she had been close enough that he could feel her breath in his ear. Instead of creating much needed distance, the newcomer's timely intervention only worsened their position as the cheerleader pulled him in closer, so even now, he was close enough to study her features in detail. Not the worst position for most guys, but that was the last thing in his mind, only feeling even more uncomfortable instead. Pure red faced anger was the only explanation he could come up with to explain the flushed complexion on the blonde's pale skin.

I am the master of my fate.

Heaney's words repeated in his head, ever a source of comfort and reassurance. The newcomer's arrival had given him a newfound confidence, even if the other teen's motives were put into question. He preferred believing in the goodness of people if possible, despite the rough treatment he faced throughout middle school all the up to now. Ideally, he would have preferred to wait and clear up his suspicions, but when he heard his two tormentors make a dig at his rescuer's apparent drug use, the decision was left out of his hands. He knew he had to step in.

"That's enough, you two."

His throat was dry as he addressed the bullies, but it didn't hamper the clarity in his voice thankfully. The last thing he wanted was a fight, both for pragmatic and personal reasons. Conflict was never the answer and evil should not be answered with evil. He firmly believed that. Not to mention the thought of hurting girls sickened him, which was why he never fought back in the past. Plus, the diabolical duo would no doubt find a way to spin this against him if an altercation did occur, which would only worsen his already dubious reputation among the faculty even further.

"I don't what beef you girls have with me, but I can handle it." His declared with a firm, and determined expression. Even as he was a nervous wreck on the inside. "Just don't rope in someone else in this."

Before either of them could reply, he continued. "You two can have the spot. I can head to the back of the line and start over."

Carmine strangely didn't offer much resistance as he took a step forward and slipped from her grasp, bespectacled eyes diverted to the floor. It would be a lie to say he wasn't scared of the pair in some way. Avoiding eye contact was the best way to avoid further trouble.

He quickly stepped in between Bethany and his rescuer to prevent the altercation he feared. His back was turned to the brunette and he deliberately blocked out the blonde to his side, whose expressions were no doubt displeased by now. He had no interests in finding out for sure in both cases.

"T-thanks by the way. Don't let them get to you." Timothy told his rescuer, voice cracking slightly. Any more and he wasn't sure he could keep his voice level amidst his anxiety. He gestured to the back of the line, hoping the other teen would comply, if only for his sake. "Let's get going."

Larry Fisher

Larry silently took the two girls' remarks and insults with some amusement. Really? Lowlife druggie? You need a shower? Not only had Larry never actually done one hit of drugs his whole life, other than some the occasional beer in the privy of his own home, he didn't even look like a drug addict. "Just because I have long hair doesn't mean I'm a drug addict." he thought. And so he was prepping for further fighting until the Asian boy stepped in the way.

After telling them to back off and thanking him, he asked him to head to the back of the line with him. Larry was slightly shocked to say the least, he had expected things to turn in a whole different direction, but decided to just comply. "Alright, fine." he nodded and gave a stink-eye glare to Carmine and her companion before walking back with the Asian.

"There's no need to go to the back, I have a spot some acquaintances are saving. But I have to ask, why do you just let them walk all over you? I'm not stupid enough to ask you to fight that bitch and her bitchy friend, but you shouldn't just comply with them."
